Hi Phil,

I can confirm this is not an XP problem. I tried it both on XP and
Windows 7 only to get the same exact error. My conclusion is there is
a compellation error in the game, and someone needs to go back and
recompile the game correctly for older 32-bit operating systems.

Cheers!

Hi John,

I have a 32 bit Vista computer and the game works perfectly.
So it is probably an XP problem.

Love the sounds and action but it should be called a side scroller.
I didn't read the instructions yet but found using left and right arrow
keys

for movement and hitting the space bar for attacks worked.
I like the idea that you can name yourself anything in the game.
The sounds and music were great!

Re: [Audyssey] Mudding

2015-01-21 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton

Hi Dark,
I think I have fixed the runtime error with VIPMud, the mud I was trying to
play was the incorrect one and thus it's probably likely it contained
graphics or similar nontext outputs which VIPMud, I believe, isn't designed
to render.
After finding the correct mud I have managed to get it working. Though
having it rendered directly to NVDA would be my preferred method of gaining
information, at least I now have it working for the present.

Thanks.
Damien.

I am not sure why your getting overflow errors with sapi and Vipmud, I've
been using it that way myself and it's been fine, indeed Vipmud is my client
of choice for everything bar alteraeon.

Direct Nvda support is apparently planned for the next version, but I do
wonder if the sapi issue your having is one related to Vipmud, or to
something else.

All the best,

[Audyssey] Mudding

2015-01-20 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton
Hey guys,
Does anyone know any good mud clients that work well with NVDA? I know VIPMud
has been designed to support most speech outputs, including SAPI, but I am
facing several problems while using it, most seriously an overflow error that
ends in termination.
I am also aware that a few people use such clients as MonkeyTerm and MushClient
which, as far as I know, need the use of review cursors to read the output
which, when dealing with an action packed scene, isn’t always the best option.
Plus the fact that I don’t think NVDA has a cursor of its own for viewing
information on window labels or equivalent controls.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

We have a lot of NVDA users using Mush-Z on Alter Aeon without any

Hi John,
I'm afraid to say, everything. I can move myself on the map, but that

I don't know why, but I find similar issues with other GMA games due to
unclear documentation as well. Not sure if that's just me or if others have
experienced this. I think GMA tank commander is the only one I have grasped,
but even then, I struggle to know where I am in the game world.

Thanks.

When your friend bought the game they should have instantly received an

[Audyssey] Time of Conflict

2014-04-16 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton
Hi there,
I am completely confused as to how to play Time of Conflict. To basically cut
down what could be an extremely long discussion on the subject, I don’t feel
the manual goes into enough detail about game play so that I could actually
understand how it works. Even the Time of Conflict audio tutorials aren’t
helping me a great deal, and plus they are for the 1.0 version.
Are there any other tutorials or guides that discuss it in a more detailed, or
at least easier to understand fashion, without all the military and visual
spatial jargon?
If not, would someone be willing to go through it thoroughly with me?

Re: [Audyssey] Reviving the Wheel

2014-02-25 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton

Hi Thomas,
To be honest, I didn't even use real sounds from the UK game show, I simply
regenerated them to as close as I felt brave enough to dare. I wanted to
convey the show without breaching too much copyright, especially since I was
making it commercial. Different theme tune, slightly different wheel,
different harp sound etc.
I did often think about putting a mod feature into my games when I was
developing, I just never got around to doing it, since it would also mean
documenting every possible sound effect in the game's repository.

Cheers.

[Audyssey] Reviving the Wheel

Hi guys,
After serious consideration given the immense popularity of the game and

Hi Damien,

While I do understand your concern I feel the best option is to make
the game freeware. Yes, a few customers may feel slightly cheated in
the end making it freeware works in their favor as well.

For instance, assume one of your former customers has a hard drive
failure, looses the setup or product keys, for one of your products.
Since you are no longer selling the game or offering it for download
they have to try and contact you in the hopes of replacing what they
paid for. If it were made freeware all they would have to do is go
ahead and redownload it, and since the freeware game is free its not
like they have to resort to a crack to get back what they paid for.

Besides that a number of commercial developers have gone out of
business and gave away their commercial products as freeware without
any backlash from the community. Philip Bennefall, author of the BGT
Toolkit, use to run a game company called PB Games. He sold a few
commercial games such as Tarzan Junior, and as far as I know none of
the people who purchased Tarzan Junior have complained about Philip
making it freeware. GMA Games, one of the pillars of our community,
once sold a game called Trek 2000. Now days it is freeware too. Again
I have heard no complaints from customers about David Greenwood making
it freeware. Daniel Zingaro wrote a few commercial games such as Super
Deekout, and no one has voiced a complaint about him making it
freeware either.

My point being I realize your concerns, but I think they are not
justified. Many people have done what you are doing, and no one is
complaining about them taking money for a few years and then just
releasing all the games as freeware. You aren't ripping anyone off or
cheating them, because times and circumstances change. You deserve to
be compensated for your time and work on the games, but if you can no
longer continue in that capacity then there is nothing wrong with
giving away the product for free in my opinion.

Cheers!

Hi Chris,
I did consider this, but I feel it would be unfair to the people who
actually bought it. Although a fair few of the customers said they wouldn't
mind, there are others who would feel slightly cheated that they had to pay

Hi Lindsay,
Unfortunately I have indeed had to close the doors on X-Sight.
I did send a message about this in December, but to recap, the whole
project was doomed to failure from the start. My inexperience in
audiogame development caused a complete downward chain reaction. I
didn't invest half enough money into the project, our first game was
marketed badly for US based customers which caused a slight scandal,
we didn't have half the materials we needed which meant that a lot of
our games were substandard and a lot of my team members left at this
point when they realised it was coming to nothing.
By 2013 it was all left to me, which meant that I felt under immense
pressure to get the ball rolling, and my pride and determination was
my undoing. Yet another scandal arose over a non-gaming project, the
funds were exhausted, and my marriage was at breaking point.
Since the closure, I have had time to sit back and play a lot of newer
audiogames such as Entombed, Swamp, and the Bokurano Daibouken series
to name a few, most of which are actually free. Based on these
experiences, even if I were to begin development again at some point,
my ideas for games would probably seem trivial, and I haven't yet the
experience of programming bigger games in those styles to be able to
promise anything substantial, let alone marketable. Myself, now, I
personally feel like I'm part of an older generation of developers
struggling to keep up with both current technology and gameplay styles
and expectations, so I'm handing the ball to the more confident,
younger generation who seem to have a lot going for them. It saddens
me, but all things must come to an end, and unfortunately, I feel like
my time developing games is done, unless I work on a collaborative
effort.
Kind regards,
Damien.

Re: [Audyssey] Problem with Self Destruct, can anyone help?

2014-02-04 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton

Gary,
I don't mind telling you that this game, which was originally developed by
somebody else and then maintained by myself after he abandoned it, is
terribly designed. I couldn't make any sense of the source code, and it
wasn't even designed with Windows 7 in mind. It was developed in Visual
Basic 6, an old and depricated language that needs a bunch of extra
dependencies, which came all nicely hooked up on Windows XP, however they
have to be installed and registered manually on Windows Vista and later.
The biggest problem component, it seems, for Visual Basic 6 games, is the
Visual Basic wrapper for DirectX8, which is a file called DX8VB.dll. I have
a little utility that will install and register that for you automatically
(perhaps I should put that up on my site if I am going to host these
games...Thanks for the reminder!).
However, the problem with the key generator I have never been able to
resolve, nor have I even been able to compile a version without all the
registration nonsense, which is rather sad. I have often wondered whether I
shouldn't simply take that game down and completely destroy it in the most
evil way possible. Grin.

If I can be of any further help, just let me know.
Kind regards,
Damien.

Hello everyone on this list.
I've recently been exploring Damien Pendleton's webpage out of interest.
Under the games part I've found a cool game, Self Destruct. Its where
you've got to escape a room on a grid, but you've got a bomb which goes
off when you have 0 moves.

But can I ask, does this game not work under Windows7 properly? The
Keygen used to register will not work, I keep getting an error message
saying something like the product ID doesn't exist.
Then when I try to run the game I get a message saying that a certain
component is not correctly registered or a file is invalid.

Has anyone got this game to work? Thanks!
Any responses appreciated.

[Audyssey] River Raiders back online

2014-02-03 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton
Hi folks,
Due to popular demand I have decided to offer River Raiders as an abandonware
download. It can be found, with all XSI’s other abandonware projects, at my
personal website at http://www.dcpendleton.co.uk/games. Of course, the score
server functionality has been removed, since there is no server, but the rest
of the game should remain intact.
Enjoy!
Kind regards,
Damien.

Re: [Audyssey] X-Sight Interactive Update

2013-12-18 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton

Hi Shaun,
To be honest I've deleted a lot of my older stuff. It would be fun to take a
trip down memory lane and see exactly what you have got in the way of older
material, even if it's for a laugh to see what a crackpot I was ten years
ago. The nearest I have now is the Acefire II released in 2008. Wow, that
sounds like forever ago, but I remember it as if it were yesterday!
To be honest, I'm sad X-Sight has had to go, but the other thing was,
there's very little I can really say I'm proud of. A good 50% of my
programming team were mediocre, at least at the time, and I can't exactly
credit myself as an expert either, even now, hence the reason I got a lot of
backlash. As I said before, there is also the fact that given the
possibility I could have produced a large enough game to meet the ever
growing competition, it would have required sounds, actors and music that I
don't personally have the money for. So although it's saddening, maybe it's
the best all around.

Kind regards,
Damien C.S. Pendleton.

Re: [Audyssey] entombed

2013-06-17 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton

Josh,
To be quite honest, I don't know. From what I have played, it is a really
good project. After a few issues with registration, for a while, it worked,
albeit with a couple of bugs in some of the later levels, but soon it
stopped working completely, going only as far as to generate an error log on
startup, and despite all sorts of tests short of literally reinstalling
Windows, I couldn't get the darn thing working after that. I tried to email
Jason but he told me some people were experiencing this issue and to
download the latest update from the website. I did this but this time it
just completely crashed and I think at this point even Jason was stumped as
to what was going on. The only thing I can think is that either one of its
dependencies has corrupted or I ended up uninstalling something it needed
that the system requirements didn't mention.

Kind regards,

Subject: [Audyssey] A See Munkey in my house!

Hi everyone,
Most of you may remember reading a thread a few weeks ago about the See
Munkey, a revolutionary new 3D motion tracking headset that Aprone is
designing and coding for use in upcoming game titles. I received my headset
in the mail yesterday, and I am amazed beyond comprehension at what Jeremy
has put together.
First, let me say, as people start firing up their spell checkers and
splitting the subject lines, See Munkey is not spelled like the packets of
brine shrimp we used to get as kids. It's see as in to understand or to
take in visually, and monkey like the animal only spelled with a U
instead. See Munkey.
And now to the amazingness!
There were two pieces of gear in my See Munkey box: a reinforced headband
and a small rubberized box fitted with a clip and trailing a USB cord. The
rubberized box is the actual See Munkey. It's designed to clip onto the top
of your headphones if they run across your head. If you wear ear buds, or if
your headset, like mine, wraps around the back of your head, you clip the
box to the headband and slip that on over the top of your head. The See
Munkey is designed to sit on top of your head in order to track your
movements.
The See Munkey currently tracks your head on 3 major planes:
*Horizontal rotation: turning your head side to side, called yaw
*Vertical rotation: nodding your head up and down, called pitch
*tilt: tilting your head side to side and stretching out your neck, called
roll
The software is still being developed, but it was amazing to see it in
action; I'm practically drooling to play with it more, but I want to put
this email out there first to give Aprone the credit he so richly deserves.
I downloaded a mapper program to calibrate the headset to my particular
movements. Once the mapper is launched, you move your head through a series
of gestures and press letters to teach the program about yourself. The more
times you perform these gestures, the more the mapper learns about your
movements and the smoother it translates your gestures into actions.
Currently the See Munkey supports playing in Swamp as a means of turning
your character, but this will change very shortly.
But it using it to play Swamp, I've already seen the true genius the See
Munkey is going to be.
I was walking through the abandoned hospital today, one hand on my keyboard,
the other on my mouse, and I heard a zombie in my left ear. Instead of
moving my mouse so my character was facing him, I simply looked at him. I
mean I quite literally turned my head to face the noise and looked directly
at the zombie. As I turned my head, the sound panned with my movement until
I was staring the zombie square in his rotting face. It was the easiest
thing in the world to pull the trigger.
You will not truly be able to appreciate the amazing ground the See Munkey
is not only going to break, but shatter, until you get your hands on
one--and you must get your hands on one. My understanding is that the
devices, once commercially available, will retail for $50 plus shipping, and
they will be worth every penny. If you don't have $50, save your pennies,
ask a friend, or mortgage Vermont Avenue. This is something you truly must
experience.
Aprone, you are a gentleman and a scholar.
And now, zombies.
Ryan

Re: [Audyssey] If you click on Blind software, it will tell you that it's for sale.

2013-05-16 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton

Hi,
My guess is that he wants to drop all responsibility for a domain, and
because you can't cancel a domain off before its expiry date, he is offering
the domain for somebody else. The possibility that he may be asking for a
high price could be due to the fact that he has been operating under the
name BlindSoftware for a number of years now and so not only would he be
relinquishing his domain, he would be renouncing his brandname as well.

Just my thoughts.

It's talking about the domain, not the company. Or at least that's what
I think.
That's kind of interesting that he's holding onto the domain rather than
just letting it expire, they aren't all that expensive by themselves so
i'm not sure what he could gain from this.

Re: [Audyssey] Horse Racing Game and Windows 8

2013-05-08 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton

Hi Thomas,
If I remember correctly the Lighttech games used a very old COM API called
COMAudio, which was a wrapper around the Audiere and ZLib libraries. I think
the version of Audiere used was written for DirectX8, and the library itself
was very buggy. If it gives you any idea, that particular game would
sometimes freeze on XP as well, as the program tries to silently register
the COM object on loading, and seems to run itself into an infinite loop if
unsuccessful.
My guess is that for whatever reason Windows 8 is not registering the
comaudio.dll file, and that'll be why it freezes.

As it happens, despite pretty much paying for the games twice due to

time in order that I can unlock the software when needed, but just as
importantly, to give Justin the money I feel he deserves after so long and

Subject: [Audyssey] BSC Games shutting down, and reactions…

Hi all,

BSC was a pioneer in the early days of accessible audio games for modern
platforms. There are a handful of companies and developers without whom the
industry would not exist as it does today, and Justin is one of those.

I'm disappointed, but not really surprised, to see some of the sentiments
being batted around on list. Essentially, like always, everyone wants
something for nothing, and never mind the time, effort or trouble that
Justin put into the games over the past dozen years, whether or not he has
released anything new recently. The shortsightedness of the community is to
its detriment.

Kids won't be kids forever. Perhaps Justin is reserving the right to return
to creating and/or updating these games eventually, when his kids are grown.
Perhaps he just wants to be fairly compensated for the hours he spent
developing them in the first place. Whatever his reasons or movations, I
have no doubt that some of you will pirate the heck out of these games
without a thought to their creator.

Should Activision give away the Infocom collection for free? Should Nintendo
allow anyone to make clones of NES or SNES cartridges of the old Super Mario
Brothers Games? Maybe Paramount should give up the rights to Star Trek the
Next Generation, after all, they aren't making that series anymore.

Rather than calling justin greedy for giving folks the chance to do the
right, legal, and ethical thing and purchase games they may want before
their gone for a ridiculously reduced price, you should all be thanking him
for the hours of entertainment and enjoyment he brought to you over the
years.

Personally, I'd like to thank Justin for paving the way for developers like

Re: [Audyssey] x-wheel questions

2013-04-02 Thread Damien C. S. Pendleton

Hi Charles,
I'm surprised there is no manual with your copy of X-Wheel. Did you download
it from the website? Have you got the latest version 1.2?

To answer your questions.
1. The music is turned up and down with the page up and page down keys, it
can't be turned on or off.
2. Yes, by all means, if you have Jaws loaded you can use it to play the
game. The game supports all major screenreaders.

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Damien C.S. Pendleton.

As I don't find a user's manual, I'll ask my questions here:

How is the music turned up, down, on, and off?

In the settings, there is an option for jaws. I was thinking that SAPI is
used. As a JAWS user, should this be what I select or modify? Thanks.

Subject: [Audyssey] X-Wheel 1.1 Released

Hi folks,
We are pleased to announce the release of X-Wheel 1.1. Though this is not
a major release, it does contain a couple of important changes.
Firstly, the game now contains a player manager, where you can have
anything between two and four players. You can decide which players are
human, and which players are computer based, and the computer players now
have intelligence levels that you can choose to play with.
Other minor changes include: Two new options in the main menu, to
unregister the game and to clear your local scores, and the game now
prompts you to confirm you wish to return to the main menu if you try and
exit during a game. There are also a couple of minor bug fixes and
performance improvements.
You can download it at
http://www.x-sight-interactive.net/games/x-wheel.php.

Kind regards,
Damien C.S. Pendleton,
Head of X-Sight Interactive.
