[Audyssey] voice problem with 7128 games

2016-08-01 Thread Eleanor Robinson

Nicol,
No.
We looked at our code and did some experiments.
There is no way to force our games to use the Kevin voice.
The Kevin voice is used only when SAPI fails.
And we have two different connections to SAPI, because we don't want it
to fail.

However, if you heard the Kevin voice, you would run back to Anna.
Kevin was a free voice we got from a university many years ago.
He sounds like someone gargling, very slowly: really, really bad.
So if you want a better voice, you will have to get a better SAPI voice.
Sorry not to be more helpful.

[Audyssey] 7-128 Games

2015-10-21 Thread Eleanor

Hi Maureen,

7-128 Software games are tested against Windows XP, Win 7, Win 8, and we
are presently testing on Win 10. The Perceptions GameBook contains the
engine that runs our games. You can buy a game independently, but it
costs less to buy the GameBook than the same number of single games.
There are also several additional popcorn games that are free and can be
downloaded into the GameBook that won't run without it.

You say you wrote to 7-128 to ask the questions. What address did you
use? I didn't see any email in our support mailbox. It might not have
gotten through.

[Audyssey] New Game in the works

2015-10-03 Thread Eleanor
In an article in the Boston Globe on 10/2/15, a company named Deep End
Games is mentioned that is building a desktop game called Perception.
It is a suspense game in which players are blind and use a kind of sonar
to find their way. It will be released on Steam.

I know nothing more about it, and don't know if it will be accessible,
but given the game content it might be worthwhile to check with them
regarding its accessibility.

Oh, and by the way, our website, 7128.com was down for a couple of days
last week because of some problems with our I S P, so if any of you

direct URL's for each website listed and includes all the websites we

annually and try to find any new websites that have information about
accessible games.

[Audyssey] audio files (was large print/braille/other media etc)

2015-06-27 Thread Eleanor
I sent this earlier and it has not shown up on the list. So I am
resending it. If you get two, that is why.

Someone mentioned hosting the audio file on AudioGames and Audyssey. We
would also be glad to host it on the 7-128 Software website. It could
also be just the print version where the viewer's own screen reader
could read the text.

As far as burning a few CD's. I would be willing to burn a few CD's for
distribution. When we ship CD's, we charge $5.00 for burning, shipping
and materials which covers the cost of the CD blanks, printer ink,
postage and a little something for my time. I am willing to cover the
costs for 20 CD's. Any more than that, and I'd need to charge a little
something for it, partially because of the wear and tear on our equipment.

As Jeremy said: For an idea that was only a mere suggestion a little
over a week ago, that's a lot of progress.
Lets keep thrashing things out and make something that will help people
who don't know that such things exist, find audiogames to enjoy.

[Audyssey] braille/large print/other media for audio games (was, info games game engines)

2015-06-20 Thread Eleanor
While we, at 7-128 Software can't help with the braille process, we
would be glad to help in other ways. We have someone on staff who is a
professional editor who could review the text of the final draft (not
the braille rendition) if that is needed. After that, probably someone
should also review the actual braille rendition to be sure there is no
error in translation.

I think the basic idea is a very good one. I think that distribution at
local and national conferences, and by putting the word out about the
availability of these pamphlets on other lists as well as some other
locations mentioned previously should be an effective way of getting
people aware of, and interested in, audiogames.

Hi nicol.

Unfortunately due to an error that dropdown box isn't working. If you go

the games list however you will find links to all the pages,
alternatively
you could go to the search games link on the main page and display all
games
by foralltoplay, or all audio adventure games.

The pages are still there, it's just that box which is broken, though
hopefully Sander will fix it soon.

I prefer the combo box on audiogames.net to read up on a game.
So I choose grail to the thief in the combo box and I click submit.
But I'm not taken to the page reviewing grail to the thief.
I still get the home page after clicking submit.
I've tried about 10 times.
I have internet explorer 11 and firefox 34.0.5
I have tried both.
Has anybody experienced this?
If so, what address should I use to report the problem.
Many thanks for any help

The Visit Salem game is rated as NI (see our website, www.7128.com for a
description of our accessibility ratings). Each of our games are rated
as to their accessibility. Many have features that allow them to be
rated as accessible to more than one type of disability. The reason we
rate our games is to help gamers decide if a particular game will be
accessible to them. It would be very helpful if all games had such a
rating system. I have suggested it in several workshops I have done in
game developer conferences, but there was not much interest.

[Audyssey] xbox accessibility?

2015-04-02 Thread Eleanor
Weighing in on the typing issue, I agree with both Tim and Dark. One
point that must be made though is that touch typing really needs a
physical keyboard, not just a virtual keyboard. Correct finger
positioning is necessary and without tactile clues, it is difficult to
do. Since keyboards can be used with tablets, someone can touch type,
using a keyboard on a tablet. I am a touch typist and have to hunt and
peck on a virtual keyboard, which is where this whole discussion started
- i.e. are we moving away from desktops. Perhaps a Surface Pro type of
device is an example of the direction that we are going?

[Audyssey] recommend new games for beginners

2015-03-29 Thread Eleanor
Dorothy Martin wanted some easy games for beginner gamers. We, at 7-128
Software, have a number of relatively easy accessible games. While we
don't have a mud, we do have text based mysteries, the Inspector Cyndi
series. We also have memory games and word games. Go to our website at
www.7128.com to see what we have to offer.

[Audyssey] tabletop RPG's

2015-02-02 Thread Eleanor
7-128 Software has a very simple free dice roller as well. You specify
the number of sides and number of dice and get a randomly generated
sum. It can be accessed at www.7128.com. Select the resources button
at the end of the page and tab down the resources page to the free
DarkDice application.

Dark said the ability to customize dice rolls is especially helpful.
Was there something beyond the ability to indicate the number of sides
and number of dice that would be helpful?

We are working on mobile apps at this point and might be willing to port
the DarkDice application to mobile if there is an interest. What
features would be nice to have besides those in our current DarkDice?

[Audyssey] role-playing type game map design

2014-12-27 Thread Eleanor
Jacob was talking about the scale of maps that could be built. If the
maps were designed to be nested tree sets, you could have a number of
scaled maps easily moved between. For example, you could start on a
continent, move to a city or town, find a specific neighborhood and then
enter a specific building by using a simple keystroke (plus and minus
signs) to move to larger or smaller scale maps and normal navigation
(probably arrow keys) to move within the individual maps. I like the
idea of transportation over longer distances being step type movements.
Sounds exciting Jacob.

[Audyssey] AbleGamers Holiday Gift Guide

2014-12-03 Thread Eleanor
AbleGamers have published their Holiday Gift Guide for Gamers with
Disabilities. While most of the entries are for motion impaired gamers,
they do mention in the list of Top 6 Games one that they indicate is
blind and VI accessible. The title is: Injustice: Gods Among Us for
the PC. The Gift Guide is on the home page of the website. You can
access their website at: http://www.ablegamers.com/

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who plays it as to how
accessible the game is before I put it in my list of recommended games.
Thanks.

[Audyssey] Using a TV as a monitor

2014-10-30 Thread Eleanor
Karen was interested in more traditional games for her aunt who is
visually impaired. While 7-128 Software games don't play through a TV,
they have both graphics and audio (using SAPI voices), a Big Type
setting that increases the font size and improves contrast, and there
are a number of word games as well as the Inspector Cyndi mystery series
she might enjoy.

Our games can be found at www.7128.com and each game is rated as to the

2014-10-19 Thread Eleanor
In addition to those mentioned, the folks at 7-128 Software are
sighted. We try to create games that are for both blind and sighted
gamers. We use SAPI voices for dialogue, descriptive material for the
scenes and sounds for, as one of our blind game testers said, ear
candy that helps create the mood. This is especially evident in our
Inspector Cyndi series.

This is a personal opinion only. Messages that say that a site is down are,
in a way, pointless, aren't they? If you try to access a site and get
results that show that it is down, you'll know that it is down. On other
lists that I subscribe to, messages of this nature only serve to clutter the
list.

I just want to say that we at 7-128 Software would appreciate having someone
report when our website is down since we might not know about it and would want
to get right at getting it up and running as soon as possible. So that is a
reason for people to inform the community.

I agree that once reported and confirmed, not much more needs to be added that
would clutter the list, but it is important to know that a website is down.

[Audyssey] game taste was: Re: regarding temporal, disturbance

2014-05-16 Thread Eleanor

Hi Dark,

You use the term game mechanics which is partially what I mean when I
say game mechanism. The particular way that you play the game in
general has to be compelling to the player. Your comment about what
happens if the player is just required to react faster and faster or how
boring the simple act of fighting can become is an example of less
effective game mechanics. It is more than just the way in which you
play the game, it is the totality of the experience - simple mechanics,
lots of variation, good atmosphere and challenge.

The games that are most affected by poor game mechanics are arcade type
games, puzzle and tile games and shooters. I would love to come up with
a game mechanism that is as compelling as some of the match 3 games are
to sighted players where the game mechanics are simple, but the
variations and challenges are numerous - much like you describe for
Papasangre. That's the challenge game developers face when they design
a game.

Well - we can just keep trying.

Eleanor Robinson
7-128 Software

Dark said:

Hi Eleanor.

I'm afraid I'm not exactly sure what you mean by game mechanism here.

I've seen various forms of game with different controllers be more or less
successful. For example Papasangre on the Iphone very much has the sort of
difficulty you mention, plus good atmosphere and a simple challenge to get
into, but features a first person interface and a very unique control method
using the touch screen.

Entombed just uses menues and basic arrow key movement, but is one of the
most engaging games I've seen, albeit there are some balance issues which
make the flow of the game problematic.

Your own games use a basic keyboard choice interface which seems fine.

The problem of difficulty seems only tangentially tied to the game's
interface and control method. For me a far more serius problem is how!
difficulty increases.

For example, if the player is just required to react faster and faster and
faster, then there will simply be a point when enough is enough. If however
there are other factors than reaction involved, the player is tempted to try
again and again, sinse while reaction speed can improve only slowly, the
ability to get used to game mechanics and make correct judgements can
improve far more quickly.

Similarly for rpg or other management style games, if the player is tested
simply on their abaility to balance lots of equipment, but the fighting
itself is fairly dull (just hitting attack), the game can quickly become
uninteresting, sinse the player is not being continually tested,
particularly sinse the battle might already be lost because the player
simply does not have the correct gear. If however the player is required to
look at their enemy's movement and react to what they do, then the player's
chance of winning is equally dependent upon their ability to interpret and
react to what their enemy does.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

[Audyssey] game taste was: Re: regarding temporal disturbance

2014-05-15 Thread Eleanor
This is an interesting discussion. I can see that you need to have a
balance between popularity and individual preference as both Cara and
Dark indicate, and that the game needs to be simple to play, but have
depth and complexity to make it a good game.

But there another component that I have been looking for and admittedly
have not found, and that is an engaging game mechanism. The way in which
you play the game has to suck you in and keep you coming back for more.
It can't be too simple nor too frustrating. The really fun games
increase in difficulty slowly as you progress through the game until you
are scrambling to complete a level and are really invested in doing so.
Part of the lack of different kinds of games is that it is difficult to
find a new mechanism, so many developers fall back on the ones that have
worked in the past - thus the sequel games of any game that made a name
for itself.

Another problem with the story type games is that there is not a good
tool for building your interactive story that leads you to different
scenes depending on the choices you make. It is hard to do the
connections and dependencies by hand in an intricate story with lots of
alternatives at each decision point.

Oh well, that's why we are interested in doing this - it is a challenge.

Hi Ishan

The Mystery game, Death Nell is one of seven accessible mysteries
produced by 7-128 Software. You can purchase the game, either as a
stand-alone game for $10.00, or as part of a game book with 4 other
games for $25.00.

The Inspector Cyndi series is set in Newport RI during the gilded era.
Some of the same characters are present in several of the games. You
are a detective, trying to solve the mystery. You question witnesses
and figure out the culprit, the motive, method and the opportunity.

These games are self-voiced using the SAPI voice on your computer. They
have some graphics so sighted people also can enjoy the games.

To purchase these games go to www.7128.com and select the GAMES button.
That will take you to the page where you can read about each of our

[Audyssey] New 7-128 Software Inspector Cyndi game released

2014-02-06 Thread Eleanor
Hi, 7-128 Software is proud to announce the release of a new Inspector
Cyndi in Newport Game, Dead Man's Chest. You, as the detective, are
charged with finding the rightful owner of a newly discovered buried
treasure chest. Everybody wants the treasure and are telling you lots
of reasons why they should be the owner. Interview people in 1890's
Newport to determine who should get the treasure, how it was put
together, and who had access to the location where it was buried. There
are a lot of possibilities. You have to pick the right one.

This game is a self-voiced windows game that works on Windows XP through
Windows 8. It, like all of the other Inspector Cyndi games is playable
by people age 10 and up. The cost of the game is $10.00. It is
available on our website, www.7128.com.

[Audyssey] New release from 7-128 Software

2014-01-24 Thread Eleanor
Hi gamers, We have released a new game for kids eight and older. It is
called FindIt. It asks the player to find five things they might take
with them to the beach and similar questions. The player selects things
from a field of 36 items. I know this list focuses more on adult games,
but you might know someone who would enjoy this. One of the nice things
is that it is playable by both blind and sighted kids. There are
pictures with tool tips and the game voice says what each item is.
Anyhow, we just wanted to let you know that we are working on things.

[Audyssey] Any Accessible Android Games

2013-11-09 Thread Eleanor
Thomas was talking about developing Android games. One of the reasons
that there aren't as many accessible Android games as there are IOS
games is that the emulaters that developers use to write these games are
extremely sloow. John has been playing with one and is frustrated
with it. Since you have a lot of different Android phones with
different specs, it is hard to develop code that will work on more than
one phone unless you use emulators. So, if you decide to go that route,
expect frustration!

Dark said: it'd be great to have some actual guidelines which people

There are such guidelines available at blindcomputergames.com. If there
are things that need to be added, we would welcome suggestions from list
members to improve them. Dark did make suggestions when we originally
developed the guidelines. Are there particular things that would need
to be added for developers making text based games that are not already
included?

Check it out and let us know if we need to change the guidelines. If
not, use them as a basis to inform developers about improving the
accessibility of their games.

[Audyssey] Crossword Puzzles

2013-06-12 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Hi Chris - no, we don't have demos. Our games are relatively
inexpensive and simple. We had them but when there was a major upgrade
to the OS, we had problems and discontinued them. The playing mechanism
is simple. Our games self-voice using SAPI. You get a quote. As you
arrow through the words, you will hear the number of letters in the
word, the starting letter and a hint. If it is a small word, you will
hear the scrambled letters. You simply type in the correct word. The
space bar repeats the current information so it is hard to get lost.
When you have solved the quote, you submit it to see if you are correct.

Thanks for your interest.

[Audyssey] Crossword Puzzles

2013-06-11 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Hi Chris - 7-128 Software has a game, Crossed Quotes that uses the
crossword puzzle mechanism of a clue to put the right word in place.
When completed, the words are a quote from a famous, or not so famous
person. Small words such as the, and and of are simply scrambled.

If you are interested in Crosswords, you might want to try Crossed Quotes.

[Audyssey] programming games

2013-06-06 Thread Eleanor Robinson

Draconis said:

It is far more complex than simply looking at numbers and trying to use the size of
the user base as a reference point. A huge percentage of visually impaired Windows users
are, for example, are elderly persons who have recently lost their vision and primarily
use their computers for only the most basic of tasks. They are not going to be a segment
of the market who are likely to purchase Shades of Doom or play Swamp.*grin*

I just want to say that elderly people are big gamers - just not of the same
type of games that you want. If the game is a card game, word game, puzzle
game or non-violent story game, they are interested and will play if they find
out how to access them. The main problem is getting the information out to
them that there are accessible games they will enjoy.

That is one of the challenges we at 7-128 Software have tried to address over
the past several years. Here is a group of people with time on their hands and
usually a little disposable income who don't know that they can play games
using audio rather than visual clues.

The idea that older people are not computer literate needs to die a quick
death. Almost everyone who is reaching retirement age at this time have used
computers extensively in their employment for at least the last 15 years. They
are almost all using Email, many are on Facebook and Twitter. Some have played
games on game portals such as Pogo. They have recently had vision problems and
don't know how to access the computer as they used to because of that, not
because they aren't computer literate.

OOPS - you pushed a button of mine - sorry. Didn't want to go off on a rant!!

[Audyssey] Text based games

2013-06-02 Thread Eleanor Robinson

Lindsey,
The Inspector Cyndi in Newport series from 7-128 Software are all text
based games. They can either be self voiced with SAPI or read by a
screen reader. If you have a 64 bit computer, you will have to use SAPI
rather than JAWs.

These games are mysteries set in Newport Rhode Island during the 1890's
To solve them you have to question witnesses and figure out the culprit,
motive, opportunity and method. These games can be found at our
website, www.7128.com.

 I do sometimes wish
their memory games were a little harder

First, did you play them with the Easy Button turned off? If so and they
were still too easy, they are tunable. I would love to increase the difficulty, he he he
he. No seriously, Kim's Game, Snowflake and Orchestra are all set to play with the Easy
Button turned on. That is so it does not discourage new players right out of the box. I
set the standard game based on beta tests and what I was comfortable with. If there is a
feeling that they are still to easy, I can and will fix that.

[Audyssey] games we'd like to play: definition game

2012-12-23 Thread Eleanor Robinson
7-128 Software has the reverse of the game Nicole suggested. It is
called Definitions. In this game you have to select the correct
definition for the presented word from its definition and three others.

Thomas had a point about the number of synonyms there are for many words
and that it would be hard to pick the correct one unless the definition
were very carefully written. Our Synonyms and Antonyms game has a
player select the correct synonym or antonym, depending on what is asked
for. I am currently updating the list of synonyms and antonyms for the
next update of our games and I am scratching my head over how many
different concepts can be included as synonyms or antonyms of a
particular word. English is a really loosely constructed language.

That being said, I think the idea of guessing the word from the
definition is an interesting one, and since I heard it here, I promise
NOT to include it in any future accessible game. So, Nicole, if you
want to do it - go for it! I'll be interested in the results.

[Audyssey] Inspector Cyndi mystery games

2012-05-09 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Paulette
The Inspector Cyndi games can be purchased at www.7128.com. If you tab to and
select the games button on the main page it will take you to the page where you
can read the descriptions and purchase one if you like.

As to the name, the company was founded by seven people inside of route 128 (a
highway that circles around Boston MA) - thus the name.

[Audyssey] Inquiry on Inspector Cyndi games

2012-05-06 Thread Eleanor Robinson

Dark
We certainly appreciate your offer to do a recording - if and when you
get a chance - obviously with what is on your plate, you can't make any
promises. We would be happy if you or someone else on the list did a
recording of a portion of an Inspector Cyndi game as you described in
your post. You could put it on the Audio Games website and we could put
a link to it on our website. One reason we haven't done that type of
thing previously is that since our games are not just for blind and VI
gamers and we didn't think that it would be appropriate on our website.
We still are thinking that we will try to do something like a trailer
demo on our website, but it may take a while.

Anyway we certainly are open to whatever works best for people.

2012-05-05 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Mike asked - any time frame for the iPhone? Mike the only thing I can
tell you is that we are starting to look at how to develop in IOS. This
means it will take some time before we can start putting actual games up
in the APP store. I would estimate that it will be some time next year
before we will have some of our current games re-coded for IOS.

If our company was bigger and had more programmers we might be able to
do it faster - but for that to happen we have to sell a lot more games
than we currently do. Meanwhile we have a relatively narrow pipeline to
get stuff out through.

We have some ideas for new games as well as re-coding some of our
current games.

Hi Dark - Thanks for the suggestion. John and I have had some
conversation about using HTML5 on the website to produce demo-like
trailers which would show just what you are talking about - the game
features such as the videos, the sound and music and so forth. If that
does not work, we will get back to you regarding the sound recording.

The HTML5 stuff would not take as long to do as some other alternatives
we have talked about. We do want to minimize the time taken away from
working on the IOS stuff though.

[Audyssey] Inquiry on Inspector Cyndi games

2012-05-04 Thread Eleanor Robinson

Hi gamers

The reason we stopped the demos was when we updated it to the SAPI voice
we ran into some changes that had to be made to continue the demos.
Some of the more knotty tech support problems were associated with the
demos as well. So we decided to put them online. The problem is that
we have a very narrow bandwidth and so far new development has bumped
redoing the demos. It is still on the drawing boards, but we really
want to work on iPhone and iPad games, as well as finishing the ones we
have already started.

Dark and others are right that the games do have the same outcome. But
the scoring is based on correctness and efficiency. So there is
re-playability. Each story is different, but shares some characters.
You are the detective who solves the case.

One Inspector Cyndi game comes with the Perception GameBook, along with
a Tyler Game, a Woople game and two Woops games, for a total of 5 games.

All of our games can be found on www.7128.com

[Audyssey] Conference Opportunity

2012-05-01 Thread Eleanor Robinson
If anyone on this list is local to the Boston area and would be
interested in influencing accessibility in game development in the US,
you might consider trying to get one of the free passes and attending
the Enabled Play session of the Games for Health Conference.

We are sending this letter to all supporters of videogame accessibility
worldwide including past attendees of The Games for Health Conference.

On Tuesday June 12, in Boston, MA we will be hosting Enabled Play: The
Fourth Annual Games Accessibility Day.In past years the conference has
seen 8-10 sessions featuring an amazing cross-section of game
accessibility advocates, developers, and researchers.

This year we're doing something different and we need your help!

For 2012, Enabled Play is dedicating itself to generating a briefing
book on games accessibility which will be presented on June 13 and 14
to all attendees which includes a cross-section of industry, health, and
professional leaders who are attending and speaking. This includes the
conference keynotes: Microsoft's global lead on health, Bill
Crounse,Reality is Broken author Jane McGonigal, andConstance
Steinkuehler Squire who is a Senior Policy Analyst at the White House
Office of Science Technology Policy focusing on federal activity and
policies regarding the use of videogames to solve ongoing national
challenges such as health, education, science, and national security.

Coupled with public posting, and sharing of the work throughout the rest
of 2012 by other advocates this effort has great ability to better
inform federal agencies and others working on serious games about needs
for research and development of concerning accessibility.Indeed, making
training, education, and other games accessible is nearly a requirement,
not a choice for governments and their partners. For industry,
accessibility can be a great pathway to better games and sales as four
previous years of Enabled Play talks have shown.

At Enabled Play 2012, we ask that you join us for a day and help us put
together this briefing book, and an accompanying executive summary.

As a close friend of games accessibility we are asking you to join us
and help. There is no set agenda for the day, just a set goal.Everyone
who attends will get a chance to share work, opinions, and ideas.

Thanks to support from the Games for Health Project we have been given
20 free passes to Enabled Play to provide to attendees such as
yourself. If you are able to attend for Tuesday June 12, you can attend
for free.Hotel and travel are your own responsibility. If you wish to
stay on for the remainder of Games for Health that is also an additional
charge. If you have a brief 10-15 minute talk you'd like to give we will
incorporate that into the day's activities.

To attend as a guest be one of the first 15 people to send an email with
your name, title, and specific area of interest within accessibility to:

rsvp2...@enabledplay.com mailto:rsvp2...@enabledplay.com

There have been several great resources compiled to-date including
whitepapers, great Web sites, and other articles. It's time to put
together a summary of all this great work, and to determine a set of
guiding recommendations that can help move things further along.

If you share our excitement for this opportunity, please join us on
Tuesday June 11.

Hi Paulette - Welcome. In your intro you mentioned that you have a PC
as well as an iPhone. If you want to learn more about where to go for
game information for the PC, go to www.7128.com We have a list of the
top websites for gamers who are blind. This list is updated every year
and you can link directly to all these great sites from our list.

We also produce games that are accessible. We rate all our games as to
their accessibility and any that are rated as blind accessible are
self-voiced using SAPI. There are a number of word, story and puzzle
games that are blind accessible.

We are looking at porting some of our games to the iPhone, and iPad as
well as developing some new ones specifically for that venue. But
that will take a while.

Anyhow, welcome to the list - there are lots of interesting folk here.

For Damien: If he really wants to have a keyboard for an iPad, there
are wireless keyboards available that can be used to type in items like
search fields, addresses and the like. One of the folks in our company
has one and uses it with an iPad 2. It seems to work very well.

It seems to me that Apple has tried to make their products accessible.
They have a built-in voice. You don't have to use a third party package
like JAWS or WindowsEyes to have things read to you.

Yes - there still aren't a lot of accessible games, but people are
writing them and making them available on the App store.

[Audyssey] 2012 Top 25 List for Gamers who are Blind

2012-01-22 Thread Eleanor Robinson

Hi gamers

Our Top 25 Lists for 2012 have been published. In response to the
comments made on Audyssey, we revised our criteria and have added a
listing of online games. Although we don't feel we can adequately rank
them, we listed them in one location so people who want to try online
games can know where to go.

The ranking criteria can be found at the end of the page. We adhere to
the criteria, and where it appears that a website is not in the order
you would expect, try to explain the reason they are in that location.
It is a lot of work, but we feel we add value in our analysis of the
sites and their offerings as well as giving you an easy way to get
directly to the best sites for gamers who are blind.

Please check the list out at our website, www.7128.com and select the
Top 25 button at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!

[Audyssey] Top 25 websites for gamers who are blind

2011-12-19 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Che asked why we did not list online sites - the answer is that, as is
posted in the Methodology section at the bottom of the list, it is
primarily for computer game sites. We don't discuss hand-helds,
consoles, or online sites. That being said, the Sites to Watch category
lists several of the more influential online sites, including Blind
Adrenaline. If you look at the methodology it spells out what we look
at when we review sites. What I want to make sure is that I don't miss
looking at a new site because I don't know about it.

I appreciate the sites you have already given me and assure you they
will be reviewed for this years update of the Top 25.

[Audyssey] Blind Gamers Being Taken Seriously?

2011-12-17 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Jeremy Hartley wrote an excellent post on the way that sighted people
view blind gamers and what blind gamers need to do to interact with game
developers.

I know that I, as a sighted person, have learned a great deal from the
people on this forum. I joined this forum and others to improve the
games we produce and to find out what information is needed to improve
access to games. That is the reason we, working with Dark, put together
the information about how to work with the game development community
found on www.blindcomputergames.com. I have tried to be an advocate in
the accessibility community for changes in software that improve blind
access.

Unfair as it may seem, most sighted people will see spelling,
punctuation and grammatical errors as a sign of ignorance. I do
understand that without visual reinforcement it is more difficult to
remember the spelling of words. That prompted me to develop our Sounds
Like game that uses a sound-alike word in a sentence to help reinforce
the difference between words like (pair-two) and (pear-fruit). Jeremy
says accurately that in order to be taken seriously by the sighted
world, we need to show that we know what we are talking about, enough to
capture their interest. Unfortunately that includes being careful in
communication with sighted people to spell check and be sure the
sentences say specifically what you mean.

We here at 7-128 Software try to make our games accessible, but most
game developers know nothing about accessibility and, unless they have
family, friends or an interest in the blind community, don't even
realize that people who are blind play computer games. I did a session
about what is needed to make a website or game application accessible to
blind gamers at an unconference in Boston early this fall. The majority
of the attendees knew nothing about accessibility and were surprised
that it was possible to make games accessible. So, expect that you are
dealing with people who know nothing about your capabilities and what
improvements in their games would make it accessible for you.

That being said, I do see progress happening. And we will be looking at
what has happened over the last year as we update our top 25 websites
for gamers who are blind. I would value any suggestions as to websites
that are not in our top 25 that deserve consideration.

Have a great holiday season.

[Audyssey] 7-128 Software releases three new word games

2011-11-22 Thread Eleanor Robinson
7-128 Software has just released three new blind-accessible word games.
They are:

Sounds Like - a game that helps you learn the correct spelling for words
like pare and pair. A sound-alike word is given, it is used in a
sentence, and the gamer types in the correct spelling for the usage. If
incorrect, the sound alike words with their usage sentence is given
along with the correct spelling of each. People who are blind don't
have the visual reinforcement that sighted people do regarding the
difference in spelling of words that sound alike and have different
meanings, so this should be a good way to practice that.

Spelling Bee - this is just an old fashioned spelling bee. The word is
said, a definition given, and the player has to spell the word. They
just keep spelling words and accumulating score until they miss - and
that is game over. The contest is how high a score you can rack up.

Crossed Quotes - this game is a quotation in which the short words are
scrambled, and each of the longer words of the quote has a clue like
those given in a crossword puzzle. The first letter of the clued word
is there to help the player figure out what the word is. Besides, the
quotes themselves are fun and inspirational.

We have also put together a Word Scholar GameBook that includes our
other word games and the three games listed above. There are 13 word
games in this pack and all but two of them are blind-accessible.

Check them out at www.7128.com

[Audyssey] New Interactive accessible comic

2011-11-08 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Andrew Plotkin, a member of the Boston Indies Group announced the
release of Meanwhile for the iOS. It is an interactive comic by Jason
Shiga. The plot is:
On the way home from the ice cream store, little Jimmy discovers a mad
scientist’s wonderland: an experimental mind-reading helmet, a time
machine, and a doomsday device that can annihilate the human race. Which
one would you like to test out first?

MEANWHILE is not an ordinary comic. YOU make the choices that determine
how the story unfolds. MEANWHILE splits off into thousands of different
adventures. Most will end in DOOM and DISASTER. Only one path will lead
you to happiness and success.

- A thrilling adventure of quantum physics, self-discovery, and kids
getting into trouble. (We mentioned the doomsday device, right?)

- Completely redesigned by the author for an infinite scrollable canvas.
- Full audio accessibility with VoiceOver; every panel and choice can be
spoken.

This can be played on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.
To access it, go to http://zarfhome.com/meanwhile/

The reason that this interactive comic was made accessible is because
Kwasi Mensah, creator of StemStumper, did a talk on iOS game design and
accessibility at a conference last spring. So the developer decided to
try to make it accessible and this is the result.

[Audyssey] USA Games News

2011-10-31 Thread Eleanor Robinson

Thomas,

John and I feel your pain.
We've been sitting here reading your latest USA Games News; informative
as usual.

We use SAPI and JAWS in our games. Both are a pain.

SAPI crashes sometimes, not always, on our 64-bit machines; though it
works fine on our 32-bit machines. Our examination of the Windows error
logs confirms that the crash is in their SAPI DLL.

Your information about the 64-32 bit-ness of the voices is helpful to us
there. Now we don't have to spend a whole lot of time looking for
non-existent bugs in our code. (John says Yea!)

Suspect that all of us will just have to endure the occasional crash on
a 64-bit machine until our gamers replace their voices. At least our
stuff automatically saves at each step, so people don't lose their games.

And JAWS won't work at all on a 64-bit machine; but you know all about that.

Oddly enough, we're seriously looking into using recorded voices (MP3)
for the second release of our Sounds Like game. The first release is
in QA right now. Ryan, our chief Beta tester says some of the words are
hard to understand. And Kelly commented on sound quality in his recent
review of our stuff. So we take this seriously.

Since a word game is not nearly as complex as the RPG's you're doing, we
think that using sound files might not be too resource intensive. Just
gotta get Cyndi in front of the mike. (But she's off doing paying acting
gigs right now.)

Thanks for your timely information. (John says yea again!)

I would certainly be willing to talk with you folks regarding this
project. If you want to make a game of interest to both sighted and
blind players, I do believe that graphics have to be included. They
don't have to be fancy or 3D, but they probably do have to be present to
keep the more visually oriented kids involved. That is what we try to
do with all of our games - to make them for everyone.

So contact me off-list to talk further.

Re: [Audyssey] [Junk released by Allow List] Gamers Digest, Vol 66, Issue 204

2011-08-24 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Hi Jack - you wanted the 7-128 Software demo to use Dark Keyboard. I'm
not sure that the old demo will work - that is the reason we removed the
demo from our latest version of the GameBook - we were having problems
with the demos. However, any stand-alone GameBook game listed on our
website will work as well. So if you purchase a $5.00 game it will
provide the engine for dark keyboard as well as the GameBook would.

Hi Thomas,
Well, will you upload your copy of the game for me? The copy I got was
from an archive with several abandoned games in it. In the mario
folder I only see the sounds and some dlls. And, if you can, will you
host it on your sight in the free games page? Also, if you know how to
do this or know how to use innow setup, it would be nice if you could
compile the game into a setup file so you don't have to unzip the game
and go hunting for it. Also, while you don't have the 7128 game book
demo on your sight, would you please upload it for me? I have dark
keyboard on my computer and I don't want to have to pay 25 dollars for
the gamebook just to use dark keyboard.
Thanks.
best regards,
jack

[Audyssey] 7-128 gamebook and jaws

2011-07-31 Thread Eleanor Robinson

Alex asked:

I am just wondering, does anyone know if there are compatibility issues
between the 7 128 game book and jaws, or between it and windows 7 64 bit?
as I start the game up, and I find that I can't get jaws to read me any
of the menus when it is loaded, and when I switch to sapi, its very
sluggish and unresponsive. It worked fine under xp, leading me to think
there must be an issue somewhere with windows 7 or something.
any help with the above issues would be really appreciated, thanks,
Alex

The answer is that Freedom Scientific has NOT upgraded JAWS so that JAVA
programs on 64 bit operating systems like WIN 7 will function correctly. We
contacted them, and at the time we did so, there was no date by which they said
they would fix the problem. You can use the game voice which works fine on WIN
7. Whatever SAPI voice you have will be the default. If nothing else, it will
default to Kevin - (a voice akin to Robbie the robot on acid) but having the
benefit of being free!

I'm sorry they have not seen fit to make this change. There are a number of
programs besides ours that are written in JAVA and are affected by this. If
anyone hears that they have made the fix, please let us know so we can make
sure that our games work with jaws.

[Audyssey] Philip Benefal - superstar

2011-05-20 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Hi Gamers, just wanted to let you know that Philip was a speaker at the
Games for Health Conference Accessibility Day in Boston, MA last Tuesday
and was very well received. He talked about the BGT game development
program and then demoed an upcoming game. There was a lot of
conversation after his presentation about the quality of the audio game
he demonstrated and how people felt like they were right in the jungle.
The audience, all sighted folk, were impressed. So thanks Philip.

I finally got through the mailbox and now plan to chill for the rest of

[Audyssey] Implementing graphic in games with and without sided assistence

2011-04-20 Thread Eleanor Robinson

Hi Shaun
At 7-128 Software we have static graphics for all of our blind/VI
accessible games. That being said, even the simplest of them requires
some sighted help. You have to select the graphic, edit it to meet your
needs, size it correctly and have the file available for the program to
place at the appropriate location. The coder can create the code that
calls the graphic without sighted help, but to prepare the graphic for
display requires visual help.

We have also used videos in some of our games. That again requires
sighted help to shoot the videos and edit them. The actual coding of
the call for them can certainly be accomplished without sighted help.

Simple shapes can be coded directly. We used that process for a couple
of our reward screens where a smiley face bounces around the play area.
That type of thing could be done strictly by coding. So that type of
image can be created without sighted help.

I hope that answers some of your questions. Good luck in your efforts
to become a coder.

[Audyssey] anyone got anny suggestions for the next, version ofbattlezone?

2011-04-07 Thread Eleanor Robinson
Hey there gamers - The problem of having or not having pit warning
sounds is really a problem of level of difficulty and game balance.
Since that is the case, why not put in an EASY button where specific
warnings are made and that would allow gamers to start on EASY and, as
they got better, switch off the warnings. They would not have to lose
lives before they built up the skills to navigate.
