Heya,
Sapi is an easy enough thing to integrate. In fact it's already in Block
Party. Just unload your screen reader, and you're good to go. As for
recorded speech, it's on the table. I already have one voice over guy
willing to work with me. We'll see as that stage approaches, though.

Hey Jeremy,
Thanks for the kind words.
High score posting is something I'd like to move to eventually. I'll need to
learn to work with the web development side of things first, though. Since I
intend for the rest of my titles to have a great deal of focus on
multiplayer, I'll have an excellent opportunity to do that learning. I'll
also need to work in some sort of limitation system so that players who are
careful and strategic don't end up losing out to people who just crush
things pell-mell and get lucky. And then there's the fact that a game set to
gigantic, megashift, 3 types can't, in my experience, be lost. It sure is
fun to break things, though.

Re: [Audyssey] The First Trailer

2011-06-01 Thread GreyMatter Info
Hi everyone,
I checked the archives last night, and it appears this message didn't post.
Sorry if you get this twice.

Hey Dark and Tom,
I'm glad you guys liked the demo. Thanks for the kind words.
The mechanics of the editor, while fleshed out in my mind, are certainly not
all in place at this point. As I mentioned in the demo, I need to add
opponent speech at the very least.
As for your question, Dark, about what happens in a timeline, there are two
things that will be built into the final product. First, each round will
have its own timeline, so you can design opponent behaviors according to
which round they're in. Second, the timeline will contain the ability to
program in custom combos and set them up on a switch. If you want the
opponent to randomly choose between two sets of punch flurries, or if you
want him to adopt a certain behavior depending on his health, that will be
completely doable.
It will be possible to hit an opponent while they're speaking. Just program
an unblock at the same time as you program opponent speech.
I haven't quite figured out how I want custom opponents to fit into the main
game. The goal is to have a set list of opponents that I design, complete
with some crazy behaviors. Defeating all these opponents in sequence earns
you the title belt. After winning the belt, the player can play back through
the same list of opponents, but they'll be much harder to beat. I figure the
custom opponents can be challenged individually, and I could even see a
precedent for setting up a tournament of custom opponents, but I'm not sure
how I feel at this point about players setting up secondary story lines. I
worry that may detract from the main thrust of the game. Still, I won't rule
it out completely. After all, the credit for combos and random switches is
all Che Martin's, and I'm happy to implement it.
Tom mentioned having custom sounds for the various opponents, and that's
something I fully intend to implement. As you noticed during the demo, the
clown taunted the player between the first and second rounds. I want to add
all sorts of things like that: impact sounds, taunts between rounds, intro
speech, in-round taunts, body falls, etc. As for music, I haven't given it
much thought, though I suppose you could just drop in a piece of music at
the beginning of each round timeline if you really wanted.
Thanks for all the feedback, and thanks for the interest. Feel free to let
me know if you have more questions.
Best,
Ryan

This is deffinately sounding good, though as Thomas and others have said,
I'll be extremely sorry if Jaws is the only output alternative for the game.

Personally I'd like a sapi option sinse direct output from programs to Hal
hasn't really been worked out yet, and anyway i'm quite happy with
daniel as my default sapi voice in games.

The opponent editer does sound interesting indeed, though one thing I find
myself wondering is what happens when you get to the end of the pattern?
Does it just repeat?

And is it possible for you to hit opponents while they are speaking?

Also, while I understand the game will feature a crowd sound to give you an
idea of how well your punches hit, will there be an option for adding custom
music to opponents, the way game likes street fighter tekken and virtua
fighter did. That would be a nice addition to the game.

Possibly as well you could considder extending the opponent editer to let
people create tournaments, ie, strings of opponents who must be fought in
series possibly with a prerecorded ending to finish things off.

Other than that I'll be interesting to see how things go.

For a boxer name, sinse your grey matter productions how about mat grey? ;D.

Though as so much in the game is customizable you might also considder
having your name be editable, though obviously this won't be possible if
your planning on opponents that taunt you by name.

I'll stick some news on audiogames.net about this one sinse I think people
will be interested in the demo.

All the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] The First Trailer

2011-06-01 Thread GreyMatter Info
Hi Matheus,
I'm glad you liked the demo. I'll certainly have to do more of these.
While I intend for this game to be a bit closer to a boxing experience, it's
still a modified clone of Punch-out. For those who haven't played the
original, the player had a small but effective list of maneuvers: punch left
head, punch left body, punch right head, punch right body, super punch (here
renamed to ultra punch), dodge left, dodge right, duck, and block. The point
of the game, then, was about quick reflexes, reading opponents, and just
plain being entertained (after all, the original version of the game had a
Russian named Vodka Drinkenski). To that end, your movement is going to be
limited to moving out of the way of punches but not moving about on a 2d
plane.
I do intend to charge for the game, but it's anybody's guess at this point
as to how much. I had originally planned to charge 20 dollars U.S., but this
was before I had even considered things like title defense, a trophy system,
and an opponent creator. That said, though, I don't intend for it to be much
higher than that. Unless the dollar drops like a rock, I will never charge
fifty dollars for a game. On that you have my word.
Best,
Ryan

ridiculous in my point of view, because it was more like a bop it game
remembering when x sound played to press y key and then pressing z key to
punch again but with all the keys you had do remember it was inpractical to
play, at least for me.
are you going to be able to move during the fight?
thanks and keep up this awesome job. looking forward to the final product.

Best,
Ryan

I'll have to give this one some thought. I have a specific plot in mind for

Hi Ryan.

nope I didn't see that message.

It actually sounds like the editer will be more complex than I thought if
actually it can do things like making opponents react to affects such as
help, sinse I generally thought the editer simply gave a round by round
timeline of what happened, this is good, I think it will significantly
improve the game and customization.

one Suggestion I have as regards storyline and custom tournaments, is rather

as che martin has done with submitted rail racer tracks, allow custom
opponents generally, but if someone designs a full tournament ie, long
string of opponents pluss ending either make it official or unofficial.

If it is official, it is your guy competing for another title rather the way

some wrestlers and boxers will move betwene divisions or weight classes, if
unofficial, then mark it as such and should there be any gain from the
tournament such as you having a belt, or from a custom opponent by
accumulating game stats or getting achievements don't allow the player to
gain it unofficially.

This could go both for custom opponents people create, if someone makes a
good one who you want to be part of the boxing federation, as well as
alternative titles you could compete for.

Having a random or unofficial set could also be useful if people want to
kick back and make something completely insane and weerd that doesn't fit in

with boxing seriously but might be fun all the same, such as boxing
against a character from somewhere else like darth vader, ryu or a dalek,
which would be theoretically possible to create with the editer, but
obviously not something you'd want as ann official part of the game.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Is JFW speech going to be the only method of speech output?
I do believe you're using the JFW API and I was wondering if you're also

Hi Ryan,

So far this sounds great. I've just read your blog a few minutes ago, and it
sounds like you are adapting to the language rather well.
Believe me when I say every new programmer goes through the experience of
having to learn a lot of terms they don't know, have to do research to
explain whatever they are reading, until they fully grasp the content. Its a
rough hall no matter what programming language you start with, but it looks
like you are learning fast. Keep up the good work.

As for encrypting your programs I'm not sure what you mean by that.
Are you talking about encrypting the executables?

If so I'm not sure about that since most of my experience with Python has
been in a free and open source nature. Many Python developers just do a bite
code compile on the Python programs, convert the py files to pyc files, and
redistribute them that way if they don't want to release the source.
However, that's far from encrypting them so hackers can't reverse the code.
My guess is you can't encrypt them but might have to use an obfuscation tool
to make it so even if you convert a pyc file to a py source file it is
hopelessly scrambled.
Anyone else have any ideas on this subject as I'm curious myself.

Cheers!

Hi Ryan,

As I'm someone also looking for a cross-platform version of the game may I
ask what APIs you are using etc? I might be able to help you get Linux
compatibility going here since I have Python 2.6 and PyGame installed on
this system. I also have FMOD Ex installed, but I don't have PySonic
installed since I couldn't get it to compile on Linux for some reason. In
addition, I have SFML and PySFML installed. I also have PyTTS installed for
direct text to speech using Python 2.6. That pretty much covers most of the
cross-platform libraries you might be using. If you need any help I'd be
more than willing to see this project become a cross-platform capable
version. Lord knows we don't have enough of those. Since you have decided on
Python, which is very cross-platform compatible, I say go for it.

Yohandy,

I certainly understand your skepticism. We've been treated to a number of
spectacular whiffs in the community over the years: Castle Quest, tournament
of 9 kings, Max Shrapnel, etc. You have no reason to suspect I'll be any
different, I suppose, but since you've started following my progress on
Twitter, I hope the transparency will convince you of my dedication to
seeing this through. The very reason I'm being as forward with my
development as I am is because I want people to realize everything that's
involved, and I want that extra communal push. It's easy to fade into
obscurity when nothing is at stake. This will be different.

All that said, if you're expecting something on the grand scale of MK9,
you're going to be sadly disappointed. I make no bones about the fact that I
don't have the programming expertise to pull off an epic release at this
point. However, I do have enough experience not to release a Guess the
Number game as my first title. What you'll get is something in the middle of
that vast expanse: a modified clone of Punch Out with, I hope, enough replay
value and challenge to keep things interesting for a while. Will it be
something you'll spend 40 hours trying to beat? Maybe not. But it will be
something new, and it will be something different.

In the meantime, I don't blame you in the slightest, but I hope I can change
your mind.

Warm regards,

Re: [Audyssey] Unleash Your Potential!

2011-04-24 Thread GreyMatter Info
Dark and Willem,

I appreciate the kind words. As I wrote in my previous post, skepticism is
warranted. As you both said, though, there is enough here that it's not just
an I'm planning to do this type announcement. In fact, here's exactly what
exists at this point:

There is an opponent object, and he is able to throw a full range of upper
and lower punches from achingly slow to too-fast-to-dodge.
There is a player object, and he can throw his four basic punches and an
ultra punch. He can dodge and block.
Both the player and opponent can be knocked down and can stand up. In the
case of the player, this requires some serious button mashing. This also
includes a referee who will count the player or opponent out if he is down
too long. It also includes the TKO rule: if a fighter is knocked down 3
times in one round, the fight is over.
There are methods in place that allow the player to do extra damage
depending on how he counters his opponents' punches.
All this being said, it is possible to have a complete fight with the test
opponent, provided the fight doesn't last into the second round.

What I still need to do:
Build the framework for stat tracking. I want to display the stats of a
given round after it has ended. Right now, though, the code I have in place
to do that is ugly as sin and needs to be refactored. I need to pass each
round to the fight and eventually pass each fight to the career stats.
That's my mission for today.
Build in a record system to keep track of player and opponent wins and
losses. If an opponent beats you, and you challenge him to a rematch, his
win/loss record will need to reflect that he beat you. Ditto for yours.
Finish the code to win/lose a fight. When you win or lose a fight right now,
the only thing that happens is that the bell rings. That needs to be
changed.
Build code so that the player can win/lose by decision.
Wrap the game in a menu system so that the fight doesn't start as soon as
you launch the game.
Finish programming the opponents. In most cases this will be a matter of
laying out punches. For a few specific opponents, however--the pirate, the
cowboy, the creation (more on that soon)--it will require a few extra
methods. That will come once I've completed the alpha.
Finish with sound design. That's probably my biggest hurdle, and it's going
to take some time. I picked up a Yeti microphone, and I love it, but I'm
having trouble getting Sound Forge to recognize it. I suppose I could use
Garage Band to record the voices, but I'm not good enough with GB at this
point to just bust out the Mac and record those files on the fly. I don't
even know if you can monitor GB for clipping. That, too, will come after the
alpha.
Design the achievement system. There are stats in place to check for
achievements, but nothing is being done with them. I need to come up with
specific achievements and start implementing them. That's another beta-level
undertaking.
And, of course, there's the complete lack of documentation that currently
exists. As a matter of fact, this is the most I've ever written about the
game.

As you can see from the above, the blog, and my previous posts, this is all
incredibly new. It is progressing, though. I never would have dreamed 4
months ago that I would have a working proto-type of a game. While there is
a lot yet to accomplish, especially since I'll be developing in the evenings
opposite my full-time job, completion isn't that far off.

As always, I'll keep you posted.

Best,
Ryan

Hi Yohandi.

it's for this reason i don't write news until there is at least an audio
preview, or unless it's from a developer we know to be consistant, and also
why i try not to add pages to the database until there is at least a public
beta out (one of the reasons that the database has so many not working pages
in back in 2005 a lot of apges were added for games which were announced but
never materialized).

All that being said though, Ryan is I think deffinately reliable enough not
to get over excited and promise something major without getting down to the
nuts and bolts the way some other people have.

while I'll stil wait for an audio preview or the like before making an
official news announcement, I am a good bit more confident that failing
desasters this boxing game project will be seriously developed and
eventually have a release.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

It will be keyboard driven. Eventually I plan to add support for things like
joysticks and mice, but not for this title. Besides, the nature of the game
movements are such that mice aren't really necessary.

Do you know if this game will be a mouse driven or gam pad driven game?

Hi Dark,

All of the latest information--the day-to-day stuff--will come out on the
blog at www.greymatterproductions.com/blog. When I have something official,
I will be certain to let you know.

I am hoping to put out something in audio soon, but I'll need to tackle a
few things first. Right now most of the major systems are in place. In fact,
you can have a full-blown boxing match with a clown. Yes, a clown. Because I
don't have proper sound files, though, things like the referee counting are
represented by a series of tones. When I get the fight mechanic completely
cemented, I'll put some real sfx in place, and then you shall have your
demo.

Best,
Ryan

Sounds deffinately fun, I'll look forward to seeing how this turns out.

Please let us know when you have a preview or other information about the
game, and I'll be glad to post some news on audiogames.net too.
