[Audyssey] O.T. PS3 gaming system
Hello, This is a way off topic message so if people want to respond privately that's fine. Does anyone know anything about a ps3? Specifically how to maintain it? I'm needing to know how to clean it's internal components like treating it like a computer and taking some compressed air to it or something? I'd also like to know how much hd space or whatever it uses and if it's possible to hook the thing to somewhere and back it up? It is getting very hot and I don't want it to fry. Thank you. I've never won a game either, but I had much better luck playing nethack on dos than any other operating system, because of the way cursor tracking and movement is done. I can still play it on linux/bsd/osx, but it's much more of a pain, since (as far as I know) it's not possible to move up/down in those screen readers and stay at the same columnof the screen. Empire is another game similar to nethack in it's movement, that uses symbols to show various game pieces and terrain features, and although I have managed to win that one here and there, it's made harder by the need to determine capital vs. lower case characters, which in itself isn't difficult, but after a while, you assume you know the screen layout, and then the computer sneaks in under your nose, because you didn't check that troop transport, and later discover it belonged to the computer instead of to you. :) I've actually considered making an audio game out of empire, it might be difficult to manage, but I think if it were done, it would make tracking enemy pieces much easier. Re: [Audyssey] Star conquest very irritating
I'll add slightly to that. You have keys based on wasd for directions, so x for south etc, and r for up and f for down. It takes a good bit of practice, but hey, that's easily fixed with a bit of RP and people taking new players on missions and things, which does happen. Cheers Dave On 28/05/2016 15:27, Mike Wassel wrote: Ok. Here we go, I'll try to explain this. It told you in the tutorial, but hopefully I can explain this. When you want to fight something, move to the enemy. So, M and then pick the number. When you get within one unit of them, type track. Pick the number, and you'll start tracking. Depending on what target tracking array you have installed on your ship, you might lose your track. If you look at your status, you'll see that the stock target array will only keep track of your targets 75 percent of the time. THis can be upgraded with better arrays. Once you've got the enemy tracked, type aim or, if using coords, aim aim. Once you've got your lock, you just fire. I think it takes some time to get used to it, as it's not the same as promotheus and miriani. As to needing a pack, you can try to do it without one, but I think it's needed for this game. It's up to you. Just use lockmode to change your preferred aiming method. Mike. On 5/28/2016 4:58 AM, dark wrote: Hi. No I don't have a soundpack. An explanation of how combat might work against a rat might help, eg, do you target first and then track? or do you do the track command? and when is scan useful? That helps because you don't have all the extra talking of unimportant text? Secondly, don't use coordinate based combat. Use vector combat. What that is hit the number 7 to aim northwest or 9 for northeast etc. as a new pilot do space combat with a group. As a new pilot none of your ships are strong enough to do a single beacon. I have heard the bit about the enforced rp and profile creation but I thought I tried that, however I've not had a game where I've failed quite so badly. ? I did the tutorial and talked to the new pilot lieason office and did the tasks he said. Expooring and salvage were fine but combat was a real pest, mostly because there is no quick way to get the coordinates of the enemy and by the time you've heard the computer saying "rat automated starship at 3 4 5 " the bloody thing has likely moved, and no I am not rewritng my entire mud client just to play one game with all the scripting and such, I have no idea how to do that I just want to play not program. ? I just about! had enough for a flitter which I bought, and tried a little combat again, and got completely slaughtered, particularly sinse the aim + command for aiming up in combat just didn't work, I was told "select a direction on the z axis" ? How the hell does anyone! do combat in this game? ? with no money, and no ship I was stuck (nd I couldn't get a lone either sinse I kept getting refused), and the only advice I got was go and beg on alliance channel. People were actually very nice on the newby channel, but didn't really have any suggestions. ? I'd rather not make myself a pain to other players especially when i'm learning a game and making so many major mistakes, so I deleted my character. ? Re: [Audyssey] Some sad news.
I am stunned! I am not on fb so missed this until this evening. I lost another friend on the first of February, and now heard that Thomas (Tom as I knew him from High School and Junior High), passed on the eighth. He was a good friend, who could always keep a confidence and was great to pass the time or shoot the shit with. We had many good times. I will miss him. [Audyssey] strat-o-matic baseball Jaws field scripts
I'm David Hoppman I'm 40 years old and blind since birth. I enjoy playing all kinds of computer games for the blind. My question is concerning where to get the Jaws field scripts for the Strat-o-matic baseball game. I had been working with the developer of the scripts Gary Whittington and he always made sure I had the latest scripts. When I got this computer, I lost the older scripts and Jaws doesn't give me full access to the game without them. If any of you know where I can get them, or even how to get a hold of Gary to get the scripts since the e-mail addressI last had for him didn't work. Re: [Audyssey] free accessible ios games
I have most if not all of the storm8 games, solara, the three games accept scary tribes from xrealitygbh, star traders, and lots of others. I have 20 game apps. It does seem though, that scary tribes and crazy tribes use the same game code, so if you have one, you don't need the other, as they access the same database on the game server frown All of them are accessible, and they all work with game center so you can compete against others. For those who care, my gamecenter id is WiredForSound, feel free to look me up. Hope this helps. I'm still checking on lords of blood, and panzerwars. I also don't think it's such an easy question as which is better sinse they are two very different and highly complex games. For example, from the look of it Astro galaxy has far strictor resource management than Ce, with need to balance crew, what modules are on your ship etc, but equally has a much more interesting navigation system, none of that click click to just skip between predefined wormholes or hammer a button for combat. this will also make missions far more interesting. Astro galaxy is however free to play, (just like Ce), so why not just create an account anyway and try for yourself, after all if you don't like the game you've not lost anything, though I would advise taking time, sinse one thing Astro Galaxy and Core exiles do share is they're both very! complex. My first question is, is Agrip totally invalidated by Audio quake? the audio quake entry said as much. If Agrip is now contained within audio quake I will remove it's entry from the db, sinse while (as I said to Ishen), I don't want to remove past entries there is no point keeping entries for past versions of the same game, which is why I deleted the Gma solitare entry and replaced it with one for Gma cards. The second question is what are the homepage and download links for audio quake, and indeed for your Jediquake mod if that is still available. I am well aware these are probably not being maintained anymore and won't work on versions of windows past xp, (I can put as much in the platform information), but if the game is still available obviously it's better people know even if they need to run with a virtual machine or whatever. If the game is now completely removed from the net I will simply list both pages license types as unknown as I have for things like the Bsc titles, but obviously that would be a less good option. At least, that has been my experience. there may be a way to do what you want to do, but I'm just not familiar with any current Jaws releases to give you an answer without downloading the Jaws demo, installing it, and playing around with it to find out if what you are asking is possible or not. Hi david. I know reports haven't been good thus far, though I've not tried the game myself so I can't confirm or deny. However whether games get entries on the db isn't dictated by how good they are or whether people like them. The db is supposed to be a general overview and ideally shoulod have everything in it (though with the amount of games that are constantly being brought out this is unlikely ever to be finished). As long as the game is accessible via audio ie, playable by a blind person with as much or as little effort as a sighted person, and as long as the game is a full version and not a practice game, it will eventually get a page, though when this is might be another matter. This is to anyone who hasn't seen this one over at audiogames.net It's an action game where you play a warrior who has become blind and is seaking a warlock to help him get his site back. You have a sword and shield, but the game is very much anime enspired with armies of attacking warriors, dagger wielding psychotic women, and archers who's arrows you can cut out of the air (yes it's that awsome). The music, sounds and story are great, however what really impresses me about this one is the gameplay. it is extremely simple, move left and right, up arrow to attack, down arrow to parry, and should by rights be just another sterrio target boppit affair. I am however extremely impressed by the way the game works mechanically. You can't just automaticaly block every attack and then respond with a hit, there are opponents you need to attack first, some others you need to attack slightly before they do etc. Actually the mechanics are far closer o those of a beatemup in terms of timing and response even though the enemies only have one attack each and you have only one block and one attack to play with. I'd definitely advise developers interested in creating more subtle audiogames to have a look at this one, sinse it takes that very simple idea we've all seen time after time, but manages to make it mechanically much more interesting and adds just those elements of judgement which I've been wittering on about, indeed I am quite surprised it was possible in such a basically simple game. The story and sounds are also great too (the enemies are just so evil). Either way I'll stop wittering and say where to get it. The game was originally designed to run on a game play website in flash, but getting that one to work was a bit of a pest so the author has provided a direct download: http://www.evildogserver.com/theblindswordsman/theblindswordsmanPC.zip I'll be adding this one to the database when the developer sends me more information. Well I still occasionally play packman with my limited vision, although it's not the easiest game to play with low visual field. the first answer is yes, Phil included the ghosts in packman talks precisely because they're in mainstream packman. The second answer is a little harder because packman being a very old game never had particularly specific ghraphics that give a clear sense of things, so the ghosts in mainstream packman were just sort of undistinguished shapes in redd, green or blue with eyes and a mouth, just the same way packman himself is basically just like a circle with a bit cutout (imagine a pizza with a slice missing). This lack of detail in older graphics is a little hard to explain if you've not had sight, and even to me, who has limited vision and needs to pretty much guess at what things are it is a somewhat difficult concept but I will try to explain. In Sansens carnival of the animals he makes the sound of a lion raw by playing a long chromatic run up and down several octives of the piano. Well, that as compared to the real sound of a lion raw is rather like the old atari style graphics compared to real objects. It's a sort of vague outline. if you weren't told that the ghosts were ghosts you probably wouldn't know what they were. Hope that sort of makes sense. We just need to find an economical way to make selling game's on disc profitable for commercial game developers. The main reason companies such as Draconis no longer ship their game's on CD is because it costs a lot of money to do, and there is not enough interest in buying game's on CD or DVD to make it economical for VI game developers to do it instead of downloads. The main reason ESP, Adora, now Draconis could do that say 10 to 15 years ago is that most people were on dial-up internet and it was worth the customers time to just order a copy on disc since a large game or several games took too much time to download. Now with the rise of high-speed internet via cable and dish there is less desire or a need to wait days for a copy of said game to come in the mail when they can download it, order it, and have their key in a matter of a few minutes. Thus selling games on physical media such as ours is commercial suicide because there is not enough interest or desire to pay more for games on CD when they want it via a quick and easy download. So far, the Console Living Room includes sections for five different gaming consoles, the Atari 2600, the Atari 7800 ProSystem, the ColecoVision, the Magnavox Odyssey, and the Astrocade. The Atari consoles are still remembered fondly by many gamers, while some of the other models have been a bit more forgotten over time. Regardless of how successful the gaming systems were back in the day, however, hundreds of their games have now been modified for emulated computer and internet use. From Donkey Kong to Pac-Man and from Asteroids to old licensed games like Spider-Man and The Return of the Jedi, the Internet Archive Console Living Room will allow players to recapture the timeless throwback feel of 1970s and 1980s gaming. At the moment, the games don't have sound, removing the beeps and blips that would truly posit the Internet Archive Console Living Room as a vintage and nostalgic experience. However, Jason Scott, one of the Internet Archive's curators suggested that the Console Living Room section would be receiving some overhauls and improvements over the next few months. Sound will be one of those improvements, as will an expansion of the game library. Could players see games from more recent consoles, such as early Nintendo or Sega models, make their way to the Archive over the next few years? That remains to be seen, but if the experiment is well received, it's a possibility. However, before the Archive can get Nintendo, it needs to get through the early stages of implementing the Console Living Room as a widely used and respected tool. Scott says he wants the instant availability of the games to open up opportunities for commentary, education, enjoyment, and memory. However, it's currently unclear whether or not the Archive has permission to emulate every game it currently has in its collection. Some retro game developers may prefer to port their own games over to smartphones so that they can make a profit off the retro gaming revival. https://archive.org/details/consolelivingroom --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hello Everyone, I'm about to rant, so if your not in to that please delete this message. I am so annoyed right now at companies, who do things to tighten their security and make their products unusable. In the old days you had a key and that was it. Now you've got to register your product, then activate it, and god forbid you don't have an internet connection up at the time. The reason I'm on this kick is I purchased a game several years back from a accessible game company, I won't name them, and played it very well on my 32 bit xp system. Well, they tie the game to that system, so that when I took that purchased game via USB thumb drive and installed it on the new box, the key which I had when I purchased does not work. I'm therefor unable to play in anything other than demo mode, and the dev won't get back to me. Infuriating and aggravating! Hi World of war is a game created by a japanese company as I believe a substitute for the lworks game judgment day and is very similar in many ways. You can get it at audiogames.net. It is free (judgment day is not). I think its a great game, a lot of the japanese words haue been translated except for the movies, so this is why I bring up the subject, cuz I can't understand the movies and so can't find out the cheats. Re: [Audyssey] Organizing teh Audyssey Database
Hello, I like either options 2 or 3. Option 2 would be good for what I think of as a general search like if I wanted to find all games in a particular genre that would work. Option 3 I kind of think of it as being more specific, like if I'm looking for specifically windows games, or Linux games, or Android games, and then can take it by game type. I'm also in favor of a database-driven query approach, takes out the hard coding and lets the end user search per their own preference. Hth Dave. There are many ways to do this so I thought I would throw a few suggestions out here and gather your input. The first way I could organize the database is by developer. I could have a list of developers such as BSC Software, GMA Games, PCs Games, Blind Adrenaline, etc and below that heading all the games they have produced. Of course, the problem with that method is if you are looking for a certain type of game it is difficult to find or locate without going through and each and every game on the site. The second method is to organize games by type or genre. I could have various categories such as action, strategy, card games, puzzle games, etc. I think this would be a more acceptable method for organizing the games on the site as you could go directly to the section that was of interest and skip those sections that weren't of any interest. The third option is similar to the second accept instead of just being divided by genre they could also be divided up by platform such as Mac OS, Windows, Linux, and iOS. Under those headings would be subheadings such as action, strategy, card, puzzle, whatever. Any thoughts here? [Audyssey] Getting swamp to work with windows 7
Hi I am trying to get swamp to work with my computer running a 32 bit version of windows 7. When I attempted to run the game it gave me that error message saying that one of mswinscks dependencies were mssing and stuff. So, I copied that file to the c\windows\system32 folder. Now, I don't know if this is correct, but I hit the windows key with r and typed in cmd. The read me file said to run it as an administrator but I didn't know how because I didn't know where the command prompt icon was. Anyway I typed in the 5 commands that were in the read me file and it gave me an error saying that the module was loaded but there was something about it failing to bring up a dll call server or something. Then I thought maybe I should try msinet just to see what would happen and low and behold it succceeded. Then I tried mswinsck again and it failed again. Also, I think I have direct x 8. Is that compatible with swamp or do I have to specifically have direct x 7 Thanks for all your help --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Questions about BGT Competition
Hi, Suggestion, if you have reusable code classes or library files put them up as zip files. If people in the competition want to use them to compete, they can, if not that's their choice, but the option is available. Hth Dave On 3/6/13, Philip Bennefall phi...@blastbay.com wrote: Hi Thomas, Thank you for the interest! I do plan to run another BGT competition, provided I can reach an acceptable compromise regarding the issue of code reuse that was discussed on the audiogames.net forum a while back. The good thing about allowing unlimited code reuse is that people who are already experienced with the engine and have collected a lot of utility classes and the like, will be able to make a significantly larger and more complex game in the timespan of the competition. But this is also the major argument against allowing this. If people are to compete on equal grounds, it makes sense to restrict the amount of permissible preexisting code to a level that makes it as fair as possible for everyone while not reinventing the wheel. In the discussion, there were voices both for and against. If I can reach a decision regarding this that most people find acceptable, then there's no doubt I'll be running another competition (probably within a month or two). [Audyssey] Accessible games for the Mac and a question re Audio Archery
Hi all, I used to own a Windows machine and used to enjoy playing a lot of the accessible games. However, I am now using a Mac and am wondering if there are any standalone accessible games I can try? I am running OS 10 Mountain Lion. I also use an iPhone and iPad and enjoy gaming on those devices and am wondering when Audio Archery will be released and if it will be available in the Australian app store? Many thanks in advance for any help. Regards, David --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Troopanum 2
HI everyone. Who here has defeated Troopanum 2 at normal or insane difficulty? I would like to share my statistics of my most recent game, along with a couple of tips which helped me beat Troopanum at normal difficulty. ***Statistics for Game Started on 8/12/2012 8:43:51 PM Final Score: 855120 You beat the game! Congratulations! Difficulty: Normal/Baby Black Hole Game Duration: 29 minutes 58 seconds Total laser shots fired: 3438 Laser accuracy: 33.7% You crashed on the Landing Ship bonus level, so you didn't get any points. You killed 5 rounds of ships on the Ship Barrage Bonus level, and received 75000 points. You were also awarded an extra life. Number of lives lost: 2 You lost your first life on level 16 You lost your second life on level 16 On normal levels, you moved your ship a total of 76993 times. You destroyed 215 Cruiser's You destroyed 58 Lunar Lifter's You destroyed 157 Enforcer's You destroyed 201 Hovercraft's You destroyed 136 Liquidator's You didn't destroy any moonrocks You avoided 88 bombs in the process of killing Lord Vector You picked up a smart bomb on wave 2 You picked up a portal on wave 3 You picked up an 8 point bonus on wave 6 You picked up a smart bomb on wave 7 You picked up a ground nuke on wave 7 You picked up a rifle on wave 9 You picked up a ground nuke on wave 11 You picked up a smart bomb on wave 14 You picked up a ground nuke on wave 15 You picked up a portal on wave 15 You picked up a smart bomb on wave 15 You picked up a super laser on wave 15 You picked up a portal on wave 15 You picked up an 8 point bonus on wave 15 Tips for success. 1. If your goal is to beat the game, then your lazer accuracy will not be the utmost importance. Therefore, starting from level 12 and up, I highly recommend you to rapid fire using the control key as you go across the screen. 2. When you are fighting lord vector on normal or insane difficulty, the bomb sounds are softer than on easy difficulty. Also, in my opinion, they sound a little bit different. All I can say about this level is that you have to have fast reflexes and rapid fire as quickly as you can as you go across the screen. Last but not least, I have several questions for you. 1. When I play normal or insane difficulty, I virtually never land on the first bonus round. Does anyone have some tips and tricks which they use to conquer this level? 2. Has anyone here defeated this game at insane difficulty? Best, David --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Atari Combat
Hi, Thanks for posting this. It brought back some good memories. I use to love combat. Thanks. Dave. On 3/27/12, Phil Vlasak p...@pcsgames.net wrote: Hi Thomas, I copied this from the Combat wiki. This is the home version not the arcade one. Atari Combat Released 1977. Combat had color graphics and numerous gameplay variations. The 27 game modes featured a variety of different combat scenarios, including tanks, biplanes, and jet fighters. The tank games had interesting options such as bouncing munitions (Tank-Pong) and invisibility. The biplane and jet games also allowed for variation, such as multiple planes per player and an inventive game with a squadron of planes versus one giant bomber. The Tank game in Combat had the basis of two tanks controlled by players each moving around a playing field and shooting the other player until time ran out. The player with the higher score would win. There were various types of shots a player could have depending on which level they chose, including straight missiles, guided missiles, and Tank Pong in which the shots would bounce off the walls, with variations upon whether a direct hit could strike their opponent, or a strike required a billiard hit. There was also an Invisible Tank in which the players would be invisible except for a brief few seconds after firing, and Invisible Tank Pong option. Along with the play styles there were also mazes to choose from including an empty field, a simple maze and a complex maze. One notable (and perhaps unintentional) interaction that could be performed in the tank game consisted of bringing one tank up behind the opponent tank such that the cannon of the first was inserted into the rear cutout of the second. Once in this position, by rotating the first tank, a sprite collision could be triggered which would send the tanks into a wild jump, during which they usually would pass through obstacles, or leave the edge of the screen to enter on the other side. Another set of level choices in Combat were the Biplanes. Unlike the Tank version, this was played with three types of firing shots (straight-missile, guided missile, and machine guns). However, there were several different gameplay modes. Players had the option of fighting one on one, having a pair of Biplanes each that moved and fired in tandem, or have one player control three tandem Biplanes against one large Bomber. The Bomber's shot was an oversized projectile that otherwise behaved as a straight-missile. Instead of having mazes to fly through, there were two clouds in the middle of the stage that either player could fly into temporarily hiding them from view of the other player. Very similar to the Biplanes level, was the Jets option. In this mode, only straight missile and guided missiles were used. It still had the same map options and squadron options as the biplanes mode, with Jets flying singly, two-on-two, or three-on-three. Atari developed a sequel to the popular Combat scheduled for release in 1984, but was canceld. Atari finally officially released it on the Atari Flashback 2 dedicated console, in 2005. Combat 2 featured a more sophisticated version of the original's tank game, with Tanks requiring multiple hits to destroy, and Missile Bases with an outer barrier which took many hits to chip through but the appropriate tank could hide within, and the ability to launch a large homing missile at very slow intervals. The game's single action button fired the Tank's gun normally, but launched a missile if pressed while the tank was within the Missile Base. Destroying an opponent's Missile Base also eliminated all of their reserve Tanks. The game took place in a forest environment divided by a river that could be crossed by either of two bridges. In some modes, the tanks could move under the trees and in others, the tanks were forced to go around or shoot their way through solid barriers. Some mode allowed each player to detail the placement of trees or barriers prior to the battle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_(video_game) --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi, I'm in a mood to strike out in to new game genres and was wondering, a while back I heard of a western game, I can't remember it's name or where to get it or anything. If anyone has any information about this game I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Python and Interactive Fiction
Hi, Not sure if this question is straying, but here goes, python the thing I didn't like about it is keeping all the tabs straight? I'm not sure if that's still relevant, but it was an impediment to me when I tried it. Dave On 2/14/12, Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com wrote: Python and Interactive Fiction Games by Thomas Ward Feb. 14, 2012 For about a year I have been searching for the best language to develop classic interactive text adventures like Zork, Arthur, Hitch Hikers to the Galaxy, and various other famous games that have been developed by interactive fiction companies and authors over the years. When it comes to writing interactive fiction there is a large variety of tools, languages, and interpreters available for an author to work with. We have specific text adventure authoring systems such as Adrift, Inform 7, and Tads as well as all the other traditional programming languages like C or C++ to choose from. The only problem was I couldn't find a language that had the right balance of ease of use but the ability to build extremely complex worlds and handle a lot of stats. So while there were many options I felt there was no middle ground which I'll explain in more detail below. However, Python seems to fit all of my requirements because its easy to use, is cross-platform, and is able to build extremely complex worlds and handle a lot of stat checks and so on. None of the other choices seemed to fit all of the requirements I was looking for. For example, I started my quest with the Adrift 4.0 Generator and Runner. To be fair it is a nice adventure system, and getting up and running with a basic text adventure is fairly straight forward and easy. The Generator allows the developer to bring up a simple dialog box and then he or she can enter the required information into various edit fields as well as check and uncheck attributes using standard checkboxes. This makes creating adventures very easy as there is no programming involved and it is a tool clearly designed for the layman. Unfortunately, its this simplicity and ease of use that I also found problematic and undesirable for my own work. Having used full blown programming languages for roughly a decade I found that Adrift didn't give me nearly the flexibility and control over the game that I wanted. I couldn't integrate a d20 stats system, nor could I write custom AI for various enemies in the game. It was simply too generic for what I had in mind for my text adventures. Another problem I found with Adrift is while the Generator and Runner are designed for the Windows operating system environment it wasn't fully supported on non-Windows platforms. The Scare interpreter is a cross-platform Adrift Runner for Mac, Linux, and Windows, but lacked many features available in the Windows Adrift Runner such as a fully operational combat system. As a result only some Adrift adventures were fully compatible with Scare, and there was no Linux or Mac Adrift creation tools that I could find. It made Adrift adventures less than fully cross-platform compatible which was another of my requirements. To compound the issue Adrift Generator is not freeware. As a result I would be paying for software that didn't really fit all of my personal requirements where other text adventure systems are open source or freeware. So it wasn't a good financial investment for me. So I turned to Inform 7 which has a huge base of supporters and developers, and seemed like a good alternative to Adrift. I have to say my experience with Inform was also mixed. It definitely was more cross-platform because the Inform development tools are available for Windows, Linux, and Mac and the free Frotz interpreter is available for just about any platform I could name. Plus interpreters like Winfrotz TTS is an added bonus because all of the text messages are automatically read aloud by Sapi compatible voices on Windows. However, in the end Inform wasn't so golden either. Although, Inform is a programming language I found it is too abstract. In attempting to make the language for non-programmers to understand I found it too verbose, and over simplistic in cases. To create a vampire you might type The vampire is a Man which creates a vampire object using the Man class in the body of your script. The problem here is that Inform only has about 16 default classes to choose from, and I'd prefer to do something like Man vampire which is the traditional way programmers declare new objects in code. In short, while I found Inform much better supported, better designed than something like Adrift, I simply did not like the language itself. Over the next few months I spent time looking at Tads, Hugo, etc. One by one I tried them, didn't like them for one reason or another, and then chose not to use them. After a while I was convinced if I wanted something more advanced I was going to have to basically write it
