Re: [Audyssey] Adrift Text Adventure Creator...

2006-10-12 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Rachel.
Let me give you an example of a good conversation. Let's say you have
three characters. Ben, Cathy, and Stacey. Ben has a computer and you
found it in his room but you are asked for the password to use it. Of
course you don't know the password but you need to find it out.
Somewhere else in the house you find a piece of scrap paper in a box of
Ben's and all it says on it is the word, mom. You figure this is it,
this is the password and you go type it in. Wrongo!, the word mom is not
the password. Now, let's say you start asking characters around about
ben. So, you find Cathy in a room and you type ask cathy about ben, she
replies. Ben is a nice guy, he's really close to his mom. OK, no help
there. Now you find Stacey and when you ask stacey about ben you get the
answer, Ben is great, his mother Wendy is really nice too.

What would you try for a password now?

To make this work you would edit the character Stacey and in the subject
edit box just type a single word, that word is ben so you would type
ask stacey about ben. In the answer edit box you would put in what
Stacey says above. If you want the same answer for multiple subjects
separate the words with comas. For example. One thing which I do in my
games. If I have a character Stacey and you want to know more about her
you would ask stacey about stacey. To me that sounds a little cheesy so
in the ask edit box I put the words stacey, herself. This way you get the
same response whether you type:

ask stacey about stacey

or

ask stacey about herself

This is a little better English imho so sounds better. You can also make
the response be different based on a task which might have happened. For
example. Let's say that Stacey is mad at Cathy because she thinks Cathy
stole her wallet. So, in the first answer edit box of the subject Cathy
you would put something like, I don't like her much, I think she stole
my wallet. You then have a task which you would type to Stacey after
finding the wallet of course like: tell stacey about wallet. In this
case let's say you found the wallet under Stacey's own bed. Back in the
subject line there is but if after task combo box. here you would choose
the task tell Stacey about wallet. tab again and you are in a new edit
box. This is the response to asking Stacey about Cathy but after you
told Stacey about the Wallet. The answer here might be, I feel bad for
thinking Cathy stole my wallet, she really is a nice person.

So, this way you get two different responses depending on if a certain
task has been completed.

Hope this helps.

Adrift is more wizard driven. You don'thave to do actual coding. This of
course makes it so you can't customize certain things. However for the
non-programmer it's very good.

oh, it's just fantastic! I consider myself somewhat computer
iliterate and I thought, any game creation is going to be way over my
head, but this is truly fabulous! I can get over how powerful it is!
we can create games as complicated or simple as we can. I'm starting
off simple course. :) I spent a while reading the very clear manual
but was overwhelmed. there's definitely a lot to remember but I found
that actually getting in there and doing my game is allowing me to
learn a lot easier and faster.
The only real annoying issue I've had is that after i have created
lots of rooms or characters or whatever, if I want to go back and
edit a room or something, I will route jaws to PC cursor so I can
find it, then I will press right mouse button, go down to edit, and
it will be one of the rooms but, not the one I intended to edit. but
then I'll go to edit any other one and it will take me back to the
same room. Not sure if it's a jaws problem in it's interaction with
the program or not but it can be very frustrating!
Has anyone actually completed a game with adrift? I've had to start
over a few times unfortunately.
Cheers!

Actually, if you press Alt to go to the menu bar, then W to go to the Window
menu, you can select which pane you want. If you click Rooms, you'll be in
the Rooms menu which ppears as a list view which can be accessed with the
normal PC cursor. Then just go to the room you want to edit and press Enter.
That should save you a lot of time and frustration. The one that gets me is
the Task system. Maybe it's just me but the manual confused me a bit on
that. I know you can have a character say something different if a
particular task is or is not completed, but I'm not sure how to create a
task really. I select what room I want the game to show the description for
as well as any additional messages, but it tells me I haven't selected any
rooms for the task to complete in. It makes no sense, but oh well. I'm also
still a bit confused on the battle system.

Right now I'm working on an RPG type game called Onyx's Curse. You play as

demanding tribute from the people for over twenty years. I've got part of
the first town created and I've at least got the groundwork laid for a few
other towns, but right now I'm just working on ironing out all the tasks and
things. I find that when you're traveling withi a town, it makes more sense
to make that part task driven. Si instead of typing North to go to a
particular shop, I'd create a task that says enter insert shop name here. So
for example when you start the game in the village of Anoth you'd type Enter
Traveler's Rest and you'd enter the inn. Then you could either talk to
people in the common room, go down to the cellar (assuming you get the key),
or head upstairs for a long-awaited nap to restore all your stamina.

Actually no. The reply with field is what the character would say in
response to the subject. So the subject might be favor, so the player would
type Ask insert character about favor, and the character would reply with
whatever you typed into the reply box. For instance Elynthia, the first
innkeeper in my game, will have a favor for you to clear the rats out of the
cellar, in exchange for which she'll give yo some stuff to help you. So
you'd type Ask Elynthia about favor and she'd tell you what she wanted from

It's the manual that I seem to be having problems with, not the program
itself. I load the manual in Adobe Reader and select whatever section I
want. I read the text like normal but then it just seems to cut off, like
there wasn't enough room on the screen. My first thought was that it's
something in my Adobe Reader. Right now I'm working on an adventure called
Onyx's Curse, where you play the role of Ehlana, a warrioress who's been
asked to help rid the kingdom of Menlari of a dragon who's been demanding
tribute for over twenty years. BTW, are you supposed to be able to set the

It is a cool system. Unfortunately I don't know why your screen reader
is not working with it. I'd be happy to help you. I'm currently writing
my two games using Adrift 3.9 and although the manual is in pdf it's
completely accessible to me using Window-Eyes. Also, the creation of
 things is equally accessible.

   Hi,
I just downloaded the Adrift text adventure creation system. While it
seems to work well with JAWS, I'm still a little confused. I'm

 manual

   It

 Hi,
I just downloaded the Adrift text adventure creation system. While it
seems to work well with JAWS, I'm still a little confused. I'm attempting
to
create an RPG style game, but creating rooms is a bit confusing. The
manual
is in .pdf instead of text format and Adobe Reader doesn't seem to display
the entire section when I click on it. Any help would be appreciated. It
seems like a really cool system.

It ain't pretty when the pretty leaves you with no place to go.

BTW, are you supposed to be able to set the
player's beginning stats? What about nemy stats?
