Hi Shane,

Uh...Just because David Greenwood isn't directly selling his engine to
the general public any more does not necessarily mean it is
abandonware. He is still continuing to create games for himself, and
Phil still uses it. Phil and David both have mentioned on more than
ocation that the engine is being upgraded to support Vista and Windows
7. Which means it isn't abandonware just not available to the public.
Big difference.

Think about it a moment. The way you are talking my game engine,
Genesis 3D, should be considered abandonware because I haven't made it
available to the public. Even though I'm still supporting it, still
developing it, and have just put a months work into it making it fully
cross-platform compatible with Mac, Linux, and Windows. If I decide to
just create games with G3D and not sell the engine is that
abandonware?

Cheers!

Hi,
I totally agree with that. I wondered why is he not selling GM like GT
or something. Is it because of its complexities of the scripting language?

Re: [Audyssey] GMA and bgt?

2011-05-17 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Phil,

Yeah, that makes sense. While that wouldn't be that complex for
someone like me the last thing a new user wants is to come face to
face with all the complexities of creating their own database. I have
to do something like that every time I create a new project with the
G3D Engine as well, and I could see how filling out all that info
might put some people off game development. However, filling in
attributes for players and enemies is a far cry easier from writing an
entire game from scratch.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] GMA and bgt?

2011-05-17 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
I think the reason more people didn't complete their games is that although
the GMA engine had documentation, and a sample level script, you didn't get
the data base of objects and creatures that went with the script.
A data base of each creature had to be filled out if they were different.
Each creature has about 70 different attributes to set,

Such as size, speed, intelligence, turn rate etc.
So creating a complex game can be very complex.
That is why I created Pacman first, as the only thing that changed from
level to level were the speeds of the ghosts and the bonus object in the
middle of the map, plus the level music.

Hi Phil,

H...Yeah, I definitly do see where David is coming from. That's
actually been one of my own issues with releasing my Genesis 3D
engine. If I release it, regardless if I release it for free or sell
it, I will have to support it. That usually means teaching newbies
lots of programming theory, programming techniques, and explain to
them how the engine works. That's a lot of work.

Not tomention, right now the G3D engine is just a library g3d.lib for
Windows and g3d.so for Linux that can be statically or dynamically
linked to a standard C++ project. I'm also planning on building a
managed .NET library version that will work with .NET languages like
C# .NET and VB .NET. That's all well and good for a programmer, but if
someone doesn't know one of those programming languages my engine
isn't of much help. It isn't an all in one deal like the GMA engine or
BGT is.

Of course, I could wrap the core with Angelsscript, like Philip did,
but I'm still in the position of writing up pages of documentation how
to code a game, writing samples, etc. I don't really have the time or
the energy to put the effort into it right now. So for the moment, at
least, G3D is a private engine. Although, eventually I would like to
release it so Mac, Linux, and Windows users can start creating games
with it.

Cheers!

hi Alfredo,
The GMA engine has it's own scripting language that allows you to write
scripts with a regular word processer, save them as a text file and the
engine converts that script to a level file that the game can then use.
As it was written in visual basic 6 it contains some of the conventions
of that language.
But it also requires you to have the visual basic libraries on your
computer to run correctly, so that either requires a separate download
of those libraries, or if bundled in the game itself, requires you to
download something you already have in a download that is larger than
it needs to be.
As for players changing the levels in Sarah, only the developer myself
can do that easily as it requires a special developer key to make any
changes.

Re: [Audyssey] GMA and bgt?

2011-05-17 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Alfredo,

No. The GMA engine and BGT engine are very different in design. The
GMA engine was written in Visual Basic and it has a pretty Basic-like
interface to it. BGT was written in C/C++ and Philip simplified it by
wrapping the engine using Angelscript. Angelscript is a language
similar to C/C++, but isn't C/C++. So they are really quite different
from a programming standpoint, and in plenty of other ways as well.

Hi Shane,
No David Greenwood never put out a demo of the engine.
I guess he figured playing Shads of Doom and Bank Commander were demo
enough.
A while ago David offered to sell the engine or rent it for a specific
time.
There were about a dozen people who were using the engine to develop
games, but so far I'm the only one who has finished them.
I used the engine for Pacman Talks, Super Dog's bone hunt and the Sarah
game.

He has stopped selling or renting the engine at this time.

hi Alfredo,
The GMA engine has it's own scripting language that allows you to write
scripts with a regular word processer, save them as a text file and the
engine converts that script to a level file that the game can then use.
As it was written in visual basic 6 it contains some of the conventions
of that language.
But it also requires you to have the visual basic libraries on your
computer to run correctly, so that either requires a separate download
of those libraries, or if bundled in the game itself, requires you to
download something you already have in a download that is larger than it
needs to be.
As for players changing the levels in Sarah, only the developer myself
can do that easily as it requires a special developer key to make any
changes.

Hi,
I am going to ask this because I want to know if they both use Angel
script and use the same type of programming, well almost the same
programming code b Gt Uses. I heard that the GM engine can be changed
so other games on GM can work better, like Sarah, for instance.

Re: [Audyssey] GMA and bgt?

2011-05-17 Thread dark

Hi Alfredo.

the gma engine was made a long while before bgt, and while it might have
been created in the c++ language which Bgt's angel scripting is based upon,
it certainly doesn't use it.

it's also a commercial engine which you need to buy yourself, and I believe
it is limited only to making first person games like Sarah, packman talks
and shades of doom.

While you could probably make such games with bgt, the two engines are not
really related.

Beware the gRue!

Dark.
