Hi Shaun,
Well, I don't see that adding hot keys to control music and ambience
volume will help. What I need to really know is why it is not restoring
values from your registry correctly. If this is broken then there is a
good chanse the games registration system is broken on x number of
systems, and that is very very bad news indeed.
The alternative way of doing this is serializing the data to your
Application Data folder, but this was the easiest and most recommended
way of doing things. So I need to know why it is breaking onyour system.
For example, does this effect all settings or just some of them?

 so I uninstalled beta2 and loaded beta1.
I clocked that uninstalled beta1 removed the monti folder and the

I restarted monti beta2 after reinstalling, I did a reboot and
started the game again, and well it was as before.
I don't mind so much, I'd like an option to turn volumes of music and
ambience down on the fly, although I can cope with it all being on as it is.

Hi Karl,
That is interesting. I've been looking at my registry code, and it is by
the book so to speak. Everything looks very close to the tootorials I
pulled off the MSDN library. If there are two of you then we definitely
have a problem here. Maybe it doesn't happen in all cases, but
definately a problem which I need to look into further.
Unfortunately, if it is not saving or retreaving your options correctly
then it is very doubtful the games product activation will work properly
on your systems which is not good news for me. So solving this one is no
longer a choice.

actually I had a look at the registry settings.
A load of said settings have true or false things, if I understand
false setting meaning off, then it appears that settings are being
saved correctly because I can see said setting in the registry if
false is on though we have a major issue.
However the way I look at it the program is not retrieving, it is
saving correctly though.

Should still work from the registry though as stuff like the gma

I don't know what you are talking about but Montezuma's Revenge speech

wouldn't effect any other application using them.
For example, speech settings using Sapi in Kitchensinc Monopoly and

Changing settings In monty would not even effect settings for Monopoly,

That is exactly the way Monty worked in beta 1. I removed that style of
code, because it wasn't friendly with Vista's User Account Control.
Using binary serialization is fine, great way to store things like
settings, but a pain if you aren't running as administrator under Vista.
Which comes down to a decision. A. Either try and fix current settings

Those are called boolian flags. False is off and true is on or in
computer binary speak 0 and 1.
I'll take a closer look at the keys themselves. You might be right that
it is successfully storing the values, but not retrieving them for some
reason.
In my tests thus far the settings that are using boolian typed variables
are not restoring where as things like speech rate, volume, and voice
are working perfectly. The difference is that the speech rate, volume,

converting the data type from boolian to integer.

Hi. I'm sure you mean jump, not run smile. but what ends up happening
when the system menu comes up, the player gets stuck in a sort

the menu, then he lands. While he's in this weird elevated more, nothing

the shift key, and move the alt to the control. This way, If I'm running
right, I would hold down shift-right arrow, and if I need to jump, I
just tap the control key once while still holding shift-right and I jump
while I'm running. Or, if I'm just walking with right arrow, I just

Re: [Audyssey] Monty impressions so far

2007-10-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Well, as for returning to the main menu after saving I can fix that
quite easily. I also can do that for loading defaults.
As to why your system is restoring the default settings when the game is
restarted I haven't a clue. It works perfectly on my system, and on the
machines it was tested on prier to release. So it is definitely not a
bug in the game, nor is it a feature of the game to restore defaults
unless it is having problems accessing your local registry hive.
Usually, it only has to do this once, the first time the game is ran,
where it discovers you have no keys in your registry hive and creates
the proper ones on the spot.
Some questions. When you installed beta 2 did you make absolutely
certain that you uninstalled beta 1, and deleted any patch files from
c:\Program Files\USA Games\Montezuma's Revenge
before installing beta 2?
This is very critical is that older Montezuma's Revenge directory must
be totally empty before installing beta 2 or some files may not have
been updated cleanly or at all.
Second, is your .Net Framework up to date?
Third, canyou confirm registry keys show up in your registry at
HKEY_Current_User/Software/USA Games/Montezumas Revenge
where games settings are supposed to be stored?

 Hi Raul,
Actually, I think you might be running an older version of the beta. The
last private beta had a couple of miner bugs which I fixed in the public
beta version of beta 2 just the day of release.
One of the things is put run back on alt and jump on control because of
it hanging the player when jumping.
Check your manual. If it does not say October 5, 2007 as the published
date then you have an old version of the beta.

OK, definitely running an older beta. My bad on that. I'll update and play.

keyboard setup James North used with control for run, and the spacebar
key for jump. That worked rather nice. The space key is a nice big
key,and it can be used as a modifier if necessary. Using space for jump
 is not uncommon.
Which do you like better shift control combo you suggested or the space
 and control combo I suggested?

Actually, I like both. So, you choose. I can play either way and you are
correct, space is very common. I just was not sure about using it as a
modifier, although Windows Vista uses it for the side bar, so this does
make sense.

It would certainly work. I wouldn't have a problem with it. My only
hesitation is since shift and control are close together a gamer might
accidently press control rather than shift and have the character jump
off into a trap of some kind or well find some way to jump to his doom.
 Grin

yeah, you are right with that, the space bar does make it more of an
obvious thing. Tell you what. How about you make the torch idea I had
work that way and then I don't care what you use for the keyboard
commands. just kidding Seriously though, your suggestions and
arguments for using the space for jumping do make more sense.

PS: I still feel strongly about the torches idea I have working the way
I suggested.

am not sure what I will do about the monsters. yet, but I am definitely
going to put it on a timer, remove items from the object scan, and
remove monsters from the map. That should be fair enough. I just don't
think monsters should be silent since the sounds act both as sight and
sound for monsters where as sounds for gems, keys, etc are there for
replacing the lack of sight only.
I'm not saying no, but I'd like to feel out some other player's thoughts

before installing beta 2?
This is very critical is that older Montezuma's Revenge directory must
be totally empty before installing beta 2 or some files may not have
been updated cleanly or at all.
Second, is your .Net Framework up to date?
Third, canyou confirm registry keys show up in your registry at
HKEY_Current_User/Software/USA Games/Montezumas Revenge
where games settings are supposed to be stored?

Hi Shaun,
Smile I've just moved the keys around a bit. As of beta 3 jump is on
space and run is on control. I just patched the code with that about 5
minutes ago as of the time of this writing.
So the system menu should no longer be an issue any longer.
Cheers.

Hi Shaun,
All I can say at this point is that is weird. There is nothing in the
game itself to account for not saving and properly restoring registry
settings as it works 99 out of every 100 times with your system
apparently being that 1 exception.
What I have discovered over the last 5 years or so is that a program
never runs exactly the same on any two different computers. There is
always something different like settings, different libraries, different
os, different hardware, and that is why it is impossible for a developer
to debug every potential bug in his or her software. The best he/she can
hope for is 95% to 98% stable and have to shrug off those weird
exceptions that comes along that don't happen during rnd so to speak.
Sometimes it isn't even the developers program at fault. For example, if
some one has a broken Sapi 5 install my program isn't at fault. It is
the end users computer that has a defective install, and needs to be
repaired.
Anyway, what I am saying is this is a beta release and I will do what I
can to fix as many bugs as possible, but being realistic I think it is
impossible to solve every single issue that comes up.

I restarted monti beta2 after reinstalling, I did a reboot and

I don't mind so much, I'd like an option to turn volumes of music and

Hi Raul,
By chanse do you have a screen reader running in the background while
playing Monty? I've not noticed it jumping to the system menu when all
screen readers are unloaded. Only when a screen reader is running in the
background.
As for the system menu itself I am trying to figure out how to disable
it, and for some reason I haven't found out how to do this yet.

system menu of the program comes up. Not sure if this has to do with the
keyboard handling that Tom already mentioned he would work on, but other
than that things are proceeding nicely on this Vista machine.

 Great work Tom.

It happened with both. I noticed it first while Window-Eyes was still
loaded, but then I had someone sighted look at the screen and she says
the system menu still comes up if Window-Eyes is not loaded and I press
alt-arrows or something similar.

I never have this issue.
However in options when I click save I think the options screan
should close and you go to main menu.
So I save then escape out the menu.
the game works, but on restart the default options are loaded and I
have to do it all over again.
Is this a bug or is it part of the actual game.

[Audyssey] Monty Impressions

2007-07-07 Thread Bryan Peterson
Well, just downloaded the Monty Beta. Quite frankly i like it a lot better than
the Alpha, and not only because it's more stable. I do wish the Learn Game
sounds option had been kept because there are some new sounds that people might
not immediately recognize, but I like the Sapi support. I've been using
Neospeach Paul, although I think I'll switch to ScanSoft Karen or Lee to give
the game some more atmosphere. Right now i'm just getting the hang of level 1.
So Thomas, does this mean a possible full release of Monty before the end of
the year? I remember you said that's what you were hoping for.
It ain't pretty when the pretty leaves you with no place to go.

I am hoping for a final release date sometime in November, but that is
subject to change depending on weather or not I am successful in meeting

As for learn game sounds I suppose I could add that in. It will take me

HI Nicol,
I am sure Tom can change any of the sounds in a few seconds but I personally
would be sorry if the character sounds were changed, as I like them quite a
bit. Maybe you could try downloading the alpha and changing any of the
frightening sounds yourself. There shall be no problem in replacing her
screams even with a laughing sound if you want to, for example, I think it
should work. The only case that would prevent you from doing this I can

 Hi Thomas
A suggestion from my side: A screaming sound frightens me a lot. If I
take the screaming sound when I play the demo of sod when My character
gives the dead cry. That shouting frightens me. A while ago someone said
on the list that the sound of bees frightens him. The same with a
screaming sound for me. I haven't tried out the demo of monty yet but
any screaming sound when my character dies or gets hurts give me a
fright. Can't you rather let angela give a death cry that is rather low
 in pitch than she screaming?
 Thanks

 Hi, Bryan.
Kate is just the voice of the computer. I have no clue who the girl is
that actually does the effects for Angela.

This is probably the reason that David Greenwood postes a warning that
some of the sounds in Shades of Doom are a bit violent and could be
disturbing in the way they sound. Perhaps Tom could put in a similar
disclaimer but folks, let's remember this is a game.

Re: [Audyssey] Monty impressions

2006-07-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Nicol.
Since I am aiming for realism I won't change the effects, but unlike
some game devs I did leave all the sounds open for editing and
replacing. If you have some good 22500 or 44100 16 byt mono sound
samples you feel better with you can put them in the death and pain
sounds, and customize the game to your liking.

Re: [Audyssey] Monty impressions

2006-07-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Lucas and all.
The only two requirements for replacing sounds is that it is either
22500 or 44100 16 byt mono, and that it has the same file name as the
sound it is replacing. Beyond that you can custom the sounds all you want.

Neo wrote:
 HI Nicol,
I am sure Tom can change any of the sounds in a few seconds but I personally
would be sorry if the character sounds were changed, as I like them quite a
bit. Maybe you could try downloading the alpha and changing any of the
frightening sounds yourself. There shall be no problem in replacing her
screams even with a laughing sound if you want to, for example, I think it
should work. The only case that would prevent you from doing this I can
think of would be the engine somewhat checking for the identity of the
files, there a re a few ways how to do it, but I am almost certain Tom's
 engine doesn't do that.

[Audyssey] Monty impressions

2006-07-01 Thread Neo
HI Tom and all,
I really love the alpha. To tell the truth, I really didn'T expect such a
stable, fast and intense game over the original Alchemy version. The only
little problem I have is the falling off ladders and things I think someone
else has already mentioned before. If I jump on a ladder and then do a single
bad move, Angela just falls off and dies. Did you mean it to happen? If yes,
then it's gonna be pretty hard for a beginner to get used to it. Also, I've
noticed that if I do sort of a combined jump, for example jump up and right
immediately, she falls of an invisible something right after and dies too. :-)
I think one of the hurt sounds is a bit too much, maybe you shall remove it or
play it just rarely, when a really serious wound is caused. I'm sure you know
which one I mean. :-)
But otherwise you'Ve done brilliant job!
Looking forward to the rest of the game. :-)
Thanks,
Lukas

Don't worry. Thomas has been working on a patch that should correct the
dying problem. That wasn't intentional, and neither apparently was the
falling off ladders thing. I'll be glad when the patch is released. That'll
make my game playing experience a whole lot more enjoyable. Then in a few
years you might actually be playing a title from me that I brought up on the
list a few days back if you hadn't read that yet. I can't do the programming

working on the manual, that way I don't have to do that later.

Thanks Liam. If you want I could Email you offlist when I finish the
makeshift manual I'm writing. Then you can see what I've come up with so
far. I'd originally thought about using the GMA game engine but that's not
set in stone and it's probably a little early to start the big stuff. It's
like Thomas said, get the pen and paper stuff out of the way right from the
start and then you can get right to the nitty gritty stuff. Anyway, I'll
Email you offlist with that file. I'd like to polish it up a bit but I
suppose there's plenty of time for that.

Re: [Audyssey] Monty impressions

2006-07-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Lucas.
I'm working on a patch that corrects the falling off ladders and jumping
bugs you reported.
The demo you have on your system was done in four months from scratch.
One reason STFC has fallen behind in updates is that time was spent in
developing Monty from scratch.

I think one of the hurt sounds is a bit too much, maybe you shall remove it
or play it just rarely, when a really serious wound is caused. I'm sure you
know which one I mean. :-)
But otherwise you'Ve done brilliant job!
Looking forward to the rest of the game. :-)
 Thanks,
 Lukas

Actually, that to will be changing. When Angela hits a wall she lets out
an egh or gasp sound.

That'd certainly be more fitting than having her scream every time. I agree
that maybe she should only really scream when she's hit with an attack that
does a lot of damage. The poison from the snake and spider bites would
qualify as such an injury.
BTW, I was wondering one other thing as well. Is Neospeach Kate the voice
of Angela herself as well as the game voice? If so that's one amazing piece
of technology if it can be made to scream! Something that versatile would
definitely be worth purchasing.

Hi, guys.
If you are starting a new topic how about change the subject line as
this has nothing to do with Monty.
Thanks.

big stuff. It's like Thomas said, get the pen and paper stuff out of
the way right from the start and then you can get right to the nitty

to polish it up a bit but I suppose there's plenty of time for that.

Hi, Bryan.
Kate is just the voice of the computer. I have no clue who the girl is
that actually does the effects for Angela.

is being fine tuned, allot was learned what to do and not to do, but
progress is slow do to the fact I am reinstalling my computers not to
mention replacing my Linux servers with Ubuntu Linux 6.06.
