Re: [Audyssey] Avoiding attacks in MOTA

2009-11-02 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Ryan,
No, there really isn't a way to make it all the way through a level
without taking any damage. Even if you duck/crouch some of the enemies
shots will miss you, but they will quickly adjust their aim and
shoot/stab you where you are. So it is best to do a quick duck, stand,
jump, etc to try and avoid shots. However, it is very hit or miss. You
can avoid some shots and sword attacks, but certainly not all of them.
So think of it as trying to minimize the damage, but you can't go
without taking a few hits here and there.

Ryan Strunk wrote:

Hi Tom,

I read in the manual that it is possible to duck attacks from enemies. I
imagine ducking isn't quite as simple and straightforward as it used to be
back when you could just crouch under the Cyclops, but I'm curious how it's
done now. I imagine you don't just run into each room blazing away and hope
that you hurt the enemy worse before he/she hurts you. So with that said,
how do you avoid enemy attacks now? Is it possible to get through the whole
game without taking a hit if you're really talented?

Thanks,
Ryan

Re: [Audyssey] Avoiding attacks was: Mota demo, my thoughts

2009-02-28 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Michael,
I can say for sure I don't want to dumb the game down or compromise its
challenge factor. In fact, Beta 2 is in its own way more challenging
then beta 1 since I have now made it impossible to crouch down and let
everything and everything miss you. Enemies will hit you if you are in
one place too long regardless if you are ducking, crouching, whatever.
So to avoid attacks you have to figure out a combo of ducks and jumps to
keep from getting hit while att the same time blast away with your
weapons. This is somewhat easier though as you can now trigger off
multiple shots with some weapons like the pistol allowing you to pore on
the led very rapidly. Sword attacking is improved two as I sliced and
diced a few enemies very quickly on expert.

Re: [Audyssey] Avoiding attacks was: Mota demo, my thoughts

2009-02-27 Thread dark

Hi tom.

I'll be looking forward to the possibility of a dodge move, sinse imho the
damage per second system where you just automatically take damage as you hit
the creature has several problems.

When I said dodge i did mean that, ie, having to move around, duck
and possibly jump, provided that there is always a possibility of
avoiding enemy attacks if your good enough with your controls.

I've noticed that the sterrio panning of game elements in Mota is much more
precise than it was in Monti (presumably down to all your engine debugging),
which is why I thought such a dodge system might be workable.

Hi Dark,
We have plans to upgrade the enemy AI for the game. Hopefully when we get
done you should have more ability to dodge attacks, but on the other hand
remaining in one place for too long, such as crouching, can get you
killed. So we are hoping to get that done fairly soon.

dark wrote:

Hi Tom.

Sounds like a good idea.

One thing I've noticed though in Mota is you get hit immediately as the
sound of the enemy's attack plays, unless you are ducking, there is
no option to here it and jump backwards or duck. There is certainly an
option to move betwene the enemy's attacks, ie, stand up and run
backwards (which was how I squat jumped past the cyclopse), but at the
moment it does seem if you here an attack, your pretty much hit unless
ducking.

I would personally like to see a possibility of dodging enemy attacks
rather than just being hit and using healing potions, of course such
dodging shouldn't be easy, but imho having the possibility to complete
the game without taking a single hit is one of the nicer challenges about
games with energy meters, - one reason I'm such a Mega man fan.

You ccould even iconsidder some sort of reward to the player, such
as a damage bonus.

Of course, this depends upon how you've coded the attacks, and whether
you've coded them with the possibility of an avoidence modifyer, ie,
ducking or jumping, not to mention a sound indicator to show when
the enemy is swinging high or low, - or more correctly a sound
indicator when the enemy is swinging low, sinse obviously they'll start
off swinging high and their default sounds would indicate such.

Just some thoughts on the challenge factor.

I'll look forward to the next beta.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Hi,
I'm not saying your idea is a bad one, but I have no plans to add a

best as the next guy, but I also have to begin thinking priorities too.
I have pretty much decided June is the cut off date for development on

order to do that I simply can't include every single end user
suggestion, desired feature, etc and make it on time. I've still got 9

Hi Dark,
Yeah, it has been something I've wanted to work on for a while, but
never took the time to really look into. However, now that the beta is
out and people are flooding my inbox to do this and that it seams I
should get this done fairly soon as the game needs to have this resolved
to make the game more enjoyable for all.
As for the audio output I'm glad you like it. This is a totally
different gaming engine, in fact, it is a modified Genesis 3D Engine so
it has a lot of the good stuff to power the game. Montezuma's Revenge on
the other hand was primarily a port of James Norths game from VB 6 to
C#, and then whatever features I added to it.

Re: [Audyssey] Avoiding attacks was: Mota demo, my thoughts

2009-02-26 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
We have plans to upgrade the enemy AI for the game. Hopefully when we
get done you should have more ability to dodge attacks, but on the other
hand remaining in one place for too long, such as crouching, can get you
killed. So we are hoping to get that done fairly soon.

Hi Tom.

Sounds like a good idea.

One thing I've noticed though in Mota is you get hit immediately as the
sound of the enemy's attack plays, unless you are ducking, there is
no option to here it and jump backwards or duck. There is certainly an
option to move betwene the enemy's attacks, ie, stand up and run
backwards (which was how I squat jumped past the cyclopse), but at the
moment it does seem if you here an attack, your pretty much hit unless
ducking.

I would personally like to see a possibility of dodging enemy attacks
rather than just being hit and using healing potions, of course
such dodging shouldn't be easy, but imho having the possibility to
complete the game without taking a single hit is one of the nicer
challenges about games with energy meters, - one reason I'm such a
Mega man fan.

Dark.

Hi Dark,
Exactly. Angela is suppose to use adjility and timing to avoid attacks
andnot shields etc.

Angela supposed to climb a rope with a clunking great shield slung on
her arm?

Personally, i imagine her tactics as much more agility and avoidence
based, much like Lara Croft's if I remember rightly.

Jumping, defensive roles, side steps, that sort of thing.

If the theory is that people explored this temple long ago, and if that was
added into the story that entire armies tried to storm it for treasure
purposes or something, yeah, that could work.

Just a thought, but if swords can be used, how about shields?

I agree that a dodging maneuver would be nice. Or if the sword was the
weapon equipped there could be a, say, block button or some method of
garding against enemies who use swords or other bladed weapons.

On that thought, maybe not. but swords could still be used for the
occasional perry, could they not? But because of her guessed stature from
the rope-climbing and all, I'd say make it one or two blocks dependent on
the strength of the enemy, as in the beat em up sengoku.
