Re: [Audyssey] Interest in your Helpful Resources
Hi Jim, Right.I certainly hope Marci and whoever else is involved doesn't expect the developer to have read the Abby Diamond books in advance as I have never heard of them until the subject came up on list. So I think one thing that needs to be made clear to them if they want us to create a game like that series they'll have to provide either us with e-books or audio versions of them just to get an insight into the characters and plot. As for the commission angle its always harder to program something that isn't your own idea. As has been already mentioned usually the ideas are drawn up by a non-programmer and then you have to work with them to reshape that original idea into something both technically possible and will satisfy the client. So it does sometimes involve a lot of back and forth until both sides agree on an outline for the project. That's where all that outlining and pseudo code comes in handy they teach programming students in tech school. With a project like this you really do need to take notes, write up an outline of each level, description of each and every character, each and every place, and have something you can show the client to correct or make comments on before you start. Pseudo coding the app will give you a rough idea of the program flow, functions, variables, etc so once you get the pseudo code correct you can quickly assemble the program in the target language. That's how I would approach this commission. Cheers! On 10/17/11, Jim Kitchen wrote: > Hi Thomas, > > Yeah, I also have not read the Abby diamond blind detective books. Hi Thomas, Yeah, I also have not read the Abby diamond blind detective books. Maybe a game idea could have popped up if I had, but then there would for me still be the visual aspect thing and the on commission aspect thing. I do still hope that it might happen though. Re: [Audyssey] Interest in your Helpful Resources
Hi, Yeah, sometimes working with a client can be challenging because often times the client doesn't really know what he/she wants. They have no understanding on if their idea is practical from a programming standpoint, and sometimes when outlining a project they can get pretty vague. It is, as you said, as though some clients expect the developer to pull the idea out of their head. That said, in this case the client is named Marci--a female client---and thus far she has been very vague on the details. I have e-mailed her requesting further information, but haven't gotten anything back. The original request from her was very vague. All we know at this point is the game is to be based on the Detective Abby books which I personally know nothing about. So a project like that could involve anything from a text adventure to a full blown FPS type action adventure. No way of saying what is expected without further details. Cheers! Mr. Kitchen, I believe we are in the same boat. While I have done programming work for other people, I have never tried to build a game that someone else had thought up. Working with a client is almost always a nightmare since they rarely understand what they actually want, and believe you can pluck their vision from out of their mind regardless of how poorly they describe it to you. Haha, I'm actually in the middle of that same sort of thing right now. I had a guy spot a youtube video of mine where I showcased a prototype vision system. He contacted me a few weeks ago and has hired me to build him something like it. This is actually why I've been so busy lately and haven't been more involved in the community for the past week. I can't remember if the person who contacted you was a man or woman, so I will use "He" as a gender-generic description. Did he give you a description of what they are looking for yet? If he has, I would be happy to take a look at the information also. --- On Sun, 10/16/11, Jim Kitchen wrote: > From: Jim Kitchen > Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Interest in your Helpful Resources > To: "Jeremy Kaldobsky" > Date: Sunday, October 16, 2011, 3:58 PM > Hi Jeremy, > > Thank you very much for offering to in the future maybe > doing some graphics for the game that Marci requested that I > make. Re: [Audyssey] Interest in your Helpful Resources
Hi Jeremy, Thank you very much for offering to in the future maybe doing some graphics for the game that Marci requested that I make. The thing is, I was hoping that someone else would take up the entire project. I personally have never created a game by commission. You know all of my games I created because they popped into my head. Don't know that I would do so well trying to create a game that someone else had the idea as to what it should be. But anyway, thanks again. I would normally volunteer to do the artwork, but I'm currently swamped with work. Things tend to suddenly clear up as quickly as they get busy, so if you still need a guy for the artwork later please let me know. > Yes, I was hoping that since I myself can not do graphics > etc that maybe Jeremy, Eleanor, Dark or some one that can, > might be able to take up the project. > > I would certainly be willing to talk with you folks > regarding this project. They don't have to be fancy or 3D, but they probably do have to be present to keep the more visually oriented kids involved.
