Hi,

You have install-powerpc-minimal-20140713.iso and the associated
stage3 on

ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.gentoo.org/releases/ppc/autobuilds/current-install-powerpc-minimal/

Perhaps you can use a stage3 from 2014 and then upgrade it after the
installation?

Unfortunately I can't get the minimal iso to boot :( I'm guessing
there is something different between ppc64 and ppc32 that is
preventing yaboot

Also not sure how nicely a 32bit kernel will work with the 64bit
stage3 -- now that's not a deal breaker i can live in a 32bit world if
needed, it's the lack of booting that i have a problem with

just a little update -- I have the PPC64 universal iso from 2008, and
had to use a 2008 stage3
i could then emerge-webrsync and this has allowed me to update portage
and world.

fingers crossed for the kernel and toys :)

[gentoo-user] PPC64

2016-10-13 Thread thegeezer

Howdy folks,
I find myself in a position where I have some IBM pseries servers at
hand, and of course my first instinct is to install Gentoo :)

I've tried following the handbook[1] but I fail at the media step, as
there is no ppc64 download, just /mirror/gentoo/releases/ppc
inside there in 2007 and 2008 I can find "universal" iso and they do
work but these are too old to install from (EAPI blockers / kernel too
old for chroot with newer stage3 etc etc)

in /mirror/gentoo/releases/ppc/autobuilds/current-iso there is a
minimal iso which has no ppc64 and i can't get yaboot to boot.
i've used the 2007 and 2008 ppc64 and they seem to boot fine, just a bit
old is all.

can anyone point me in the direction of an
"install-ppc64-minimal-20141204.iso" or hopefully something newer?

my google-fu is letting me down!

thanks in advance!

No need for an extra user that early in the install. You can login as
root. You have to be root to do the setup stuff anyways. If you really
want a "predictable interface name", remember to type...

gentoo net.ifnames=0

...immediately when the Gentoo CD or USB key boots up. I predict that
it'll come up as eth0 if you do that.

Indeed, I agree, ssh is probably The solution.

Tough I have to configure the ethernet interface first, and add at least
one user (or edit the sshd configuration file :)... I don't like the
idea

of doing that blindly... :)

[gentoo-user] PPC64 on IBM Power8

2015-11-23 Thread luciano mannucci

Hello,

I'm trying to install the last Gentoo on a virtual machine on an IBM
Power8. It refuses to boot the minimal CD saying that it is not
bootable.

The IBM literature says that Power8 will never boot a 32 bit system, so
I tryed the last ppc64 mini install for ppc64 that I found googling
around, which is a 2007.0-r1 and this one boots (putting the video in
low intensity, which is a nuisance I can cope with).
Now I'm wondering: should I try to build everithing from there, or is
it possible to get a more recent install version for the ppc64
architecture?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Luciano.

Good! That's what I expected... :-)

As long as your install cd/dvd supports the
filesystems you want to use, you'll be fine using it. Just get the
newest

stage3 and you will start with the most recent gentoo has to offer.
