Re: [Gimp-user] FAQ answers
First of all, please don't quote such a long mail without replying to it. Believe us, we _did_ reeceive the original mail, too ;) On Thu, Dec 19, 2002 at 04:26:26PM -0800, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: *) How does the Xtns/Script-Fu menu differ from the Script-Fu pop-up menu? When I right-click on an image and get the context menu, there is a Script-Fu option at the bottom. That is the Script-Fu pop-up I was referring to. :) Well, they are completey different. Or, put another way: The right-click-menu (image menu) contains operations/plug-ins that work on the active/current image. The filters and script-fu entries use the underlying image as one of their arguments. The Xnts-menu (the whole toolbox, actually) contains effects and plug-ins (and other operations) that work without images (for example, there is no file/save). Most plug-ins in the toolbox or xtns-menu create new images. As a sidenote, the fully artificial distinction between script-fu-plug-ins and other plug-ins confuses a lot of users (the same is true for the xtns menu. I fail to see why a user must memorize that a specific plug-in is wirtten in C, Perl, or script-fu, just to _use_it). All of these should just be moved to their correct location, ending this confusig double-life. -- -==- | ==-- _ | ---==---(_)__ __ __ Marc Lehmann +-- --==---/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / [EMAIL PROTECTED] |e| -=/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ XX11-RIPE --+ The choice of a GNU generation | | ___ Gimp-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

[Gimp-user] More FAQ answers
Thus spoke Steve Crane [EMAIL PROTECTED] Here are a few ideas for questions for the new FAQ. 1. Can I use brushes from other software such as Photo Shop or Paint Shop Pro with the GIMP? Not that I'm aware of. I know you can't drop those brush files into GIMP's brush directories and have them just work. If a file plug-in exists that can read those brush files then you will be able to read them in and then save them into GIMP's native brush file format. But I don't know of any brush file plug-ins for other application's brushes. 2. How can I ensure that certain of the GIMP's windows, for instance the Levels or Crop and Resize Information windows, always open in the same position on screen? In short, you probably can't. You *might* be able to do so if 1. the developers gave each window a special name of its own and 2. your window manager allows you to save position information about those specially named windows. If #1 is true (and I don't know that it is), then in Sawfish (which is commonly used as the GNOME window manager) you can click on the title bar of a window (I think it's a right button click) to get a menu. At the bottom of that menu you have the option of choosing History information to be saved, such as position and geometry of a window. Select Save position. That *might* work. But no promises. Other window managers may offer similar features, but many do not. Caveat gimper. -- Michael J. I was planning to offer the answer when the call for answers came up. There is a utility called abr2gbr that can convert the brush files used by Photoshop and Paintshop Pro to the GIMP brush file format. There are two different formats (versions 1 2) of Photoshop brush files (Paintshop Pro brushes match the earlier format) and the utility can only convert the earlier type. I think that the version 2 format was introduced with a later version of Photoshop, possibly 5 or 6 but the author of abr2gbr says that the format is not known so he has not been able to cater for it. [Gimp-user] Gif support
I'm sure this has been asked a lot, but is there any way to get gif support for the Gimp? I currently do a lot of web development, and hope to switch to all-linux. My main issue right now is of course, no gif support. Currently browsers do not support PNG widely enough to use PNG instead. I am not above paying for a gif liscense, I just can't find any documentation on how to get gif support included. I'm running RH8 Psyche, which came with the latest version of the Gimp. Re: [Gimp-user] Image resolution out of bounds Message
When I open files stored on a Photo CD scanned by a Fuji Frontier, the following GIMP Message appears: Image resolution is out of bounds, using the default resolution instead. I'm new to Gimp, but don't find any reference to this message in my Grokking the Gimp text. I've just picked up 5x7 Frontier prints made from Gimp'd .jpg files and they look fine to my eyes -- in spite of the resolution message. Can anyone point me to what it's about? Resolution is not the number of pixels, but rather the size of the pixels. The usual unit of measurement is dots per inch (dpi). When the Gimp is opening a TIFF or JPEG file it reads the tag inside the file that specifies the resolution. If the value doesn't make enough sense, the Image resolution is out of bounds message is output. In v1.2.3 the following definitions are used: #define GIMP_MIN_RESOLUTION 5e-3 #define GIMP_MAX_RESOLUTION 65536.0 It would be interesting to know what the value was that it didn't like, but in the end it doesn't matter. You're probably going to change the dpi before you print it anyway... The image data is not affected by this condition - if your pictures look ok then they probably are. __ David Burren ___ Gimp-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
