Strange behavior, my gimp.app automatically launch X11 :)
Can't remember how i set up this !

as long as I know GIMP.app - wich is quite some time - was always
starting X11 automatically (using the xopen command in the background).

[Gimp-user] Cannot copy and paste rectangular selections

2006-11-04 Thread Chris Wolf
To create web-ready images which have feathered edges, I would simply
use the rectangular selection tool, with feathered edges checked (on), a
radius of, say 20, auto shrink selection
checked (on) and select from the source image and paste to a new image
with a black background.

The result would be an image with edges fading to black and rounded
corners.

For some reason, this does not work any more -- when I paste to the new
black image,
the whole source image gets pasted, not just the selected area and there
are no rounded corners.

I was using Gimp 2.2.10 on MacOS-10.4.7. I Even tried upgrading to
Gimp 2.2.11, with no

improvement.

I did this a million times before successfully and can't understand why
it's not working now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK - I've never tried GIMP on OSX, but I have had trouble calling X11
apps w/o running X11 in the past. Still, it may not be installed - I
don't think it was installed by default in 10.3...

Roger - make sure you have X11 in appsutilitiesX11

2006-11-04 Thread Chris Mohler

Hi, Chris, er, Dog, er, Dude, er...

Can you say huh? I'm afraid that's about where I am at the moment (and
no, I'm not trying to be abnormally flippant; I'm just really, really
confused here). I think you got the e-mail I sent from my
[EMAIL PROTECTED] address (at least, this MIGHT be a response to
that). Or is this a group response to a specific problem someone else is
having?

Weird - I thought I was replying to the Gimp-User mailing list -
someone was having trouble installing GIMP on their mac. I'm sorry if
I somehow emailed you by mistake. I'm guessing that you might have
signed up for the mailing list already, since you got my message.

If you're having problems too, you should send a new email to
Gimp-user@lists.xcf.berkeley.edu and mention what issues you're
having. If you're signed up to the list, you will receive a copy of
any email sent to the list.

If you're not subscribed, you can still send messages to the list, and
read the list on the web here:
https://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/lists/gimp-user/

Hope this helps,

[Gimp-user] rect-select: suppress 'expand from center' key or gesture shortcut

2006-11-04 Thread Jeff Kowalczyk
Using linux gimp-2.3.12, Gentoo Linux ~x86. I have noticed in recent gimp
versions an odd behavior when doing rectangular selections, which I do
(and copy, paste) almost constantly when using Gimp.

I can't reproduce it right now, but somewhere in the mix of
fence-selection gestures (in all origin-size directions), select all/none
and copy-paste keystrokes, the unwanted 'expand from center' selection
behavior was turning on, frequently. I almost never use this option, and
have to go over to click the checkbox to turn it off when this glitch
happens.

Is there a configuration option to disable gimp from ever turning on
'expand from center' by any automatic or shortcut method, except if the
dialog checkbox is clicked?

Thanks.

There's no such configuration option as the behaviour you outline is of
course not intentional. You should expect such misbehaviour in a
development snapshot. If you need to use GIMP for your work, you should
stick with a stable version.

I reverted back to Gimp 2.2.10, since that was the last version that
worked for feathered edges.
I also shutdown and restarted the machine -- it still does not work.
I attached a screen shot
of my attempt to paste a rectangular, feathered selection into a
blank, new image (the one on

the left, the image on the right is the source image.)

Can anyone see if I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks again,

   -Chris

My rectangular selections were too close to the edge of the source
photo. That was the issue. Sorry, everyone for taking your time.

I'm accustomed to and very much willing to live with development version
bugs, given the unstable version of the distribution I use ;)

Thanks for confirming that it is not intentional behavior, that's all I
need to hear. I thought it might be some gesture or keystroke shortcut for
advanced users, and thus might have a configuration option. If I can
reproduce it, I'll look into filing a bug.
