[Gimp-user] New small user manual for gimp newbies made

2007-08-04 Thread Niels Larsen
A small beginners minihowto about gimp is made.

The idea is to get newbies started using gimp immediately, with the most
elementary things.

Has taken me a long time, to learn gimp.

The address is http://www.minihowto.org

I am an old pensioner of some 66 years of age.

This manual is supplementary to all the other documentation, which is out
there on the Internet etc. :-)

That is a nice introduction. It is valuable to understand the experiences
of new users; often experts and veterans have a difficult time writing
manuals and tutorials because they intuitively understand concepts which
prove to be significant barriers to the new user.

One thing I would recommend: in your tutorial you should mention the
importance of saving files in the XCF format while working on them. Many
new users will save their multi-layered files as JPEG or PNG and then find
out that the layers are no longer there the next time they use the GIMP.
Saving as an XCF will retain all of the information associated with an
edit session -- including layers, texts, paths, and selections -- so that
the user can pick up where they left off.

[Gimp-user] templates

2007-08-04 Thread norman
I want to design and print some inserts for DVD cases and wondered if
anyone new of any, ready to use templates. There are lots of free
templates available but they only appear to work with windows based
software and I use Ubuntu 7.04. There is a linux application called
glabels but that does not have the one template I want. The help file of
glabels describes how to make ones own templates but I do not understand
how to do this. Perhaps my brain is not as agile as it was 70 years ago.

Good idea, trying that, it seems to have an odd sort of
rate-limiting thingy which let me grab over 100k in my
first run, then lets about 8-24k go in a bunch each retry.
This is over a dial-up modem, so I'm not exactly hammering
it for load.

Got it, many retries later. Looks good, about 4% text the
rest JPEGs. Will post a more detailed comment after having
walked through it. Hello from Tasmania, under the East end

[Gimp-user] Plug-in for assigning / converting colorspaces

2007-08-04 Thread Yoshinori Yamakawa

Hi,

I made a new plug-in for assigning / converting colorspaces.
That was bundled with Separate+ since version 20070723.

To assign or convert colorspaces, we have used the GIMP Color Manager.
Hereafter, we can use the new plug-in too.

The new plug-in (tentative name: icc_colorspace) works with the GIMP 2.2.x
or 2.3.x.

This functionality is already provided by the lcms plug-in as included
with GIMP 2.3. There is still some user interface changes missing, but
it will provide this functionality for 2.4.

Thank you for that! I've been struggling with the Gimp for months.

Hi,

I have already known that.

There is still some user interface changes missing, but
it will provide this functionality for 2.4.

If an appropriate UI is added for 2.4, I think it to be wonderful.
The icc_colorspace plug-in was not made in order to disturb that.

The support of the abstract/devicelink profiles will be added to this
plug-in, but I think that is unnecessary for the lcms plug-in.
And, two types of Absolute colorimetric intents are included in the
icc_colorspace, but these are also unnecessary for the lcms plug-in.

I think that there might be some expert users who want to use ICC-based
functions right now.
The icc_colorspace plug-in is useful for them.

Of course, the better way for the ordinary users is waiting for the release
of 2.4.

After I upgraded my machine (Dell, 1GB RAM, PIV processor) to Fedora

after gimp has been used for about, say ten minutes, whenever I try to
open or save a file from the File menu, the menu appears and then gimp
hangs. Nothing can be done after that except forced kill.

Does it happens if you move the .gimp-2.2 directory to another place?

What do you see if you run gimp from a terminal?
