Re: [Gimp-user] Making a .gif file transparent

2008-11-12 Thread Nathan Lane
Why don't you

   1. Open the GIF image
   2. Select the entire image (Ctrl+A)
   3. Copy it (Ctrl+C)
   4. Right-click on the image, then click on Edit Paste as New Image Now
you'll have a non-indexed image which will allow you to add transparency,
   after you're done,
   5. Select the entire image (Ctrl+A)
   6. Copy it (Ctrl+C)
   7. Paste it onto the image you want to watermark (Ctrl+V), then you can
move it around to where you want and then click off of the selection to set
   it

One thin about the image you're pasting it onto is that if it is a GIF, then
you might experience transparency problems there also. Two things a) I never
use GIF images where I can use PNG images, and 2) GIF images are always
indexed, which means you're limited to whatever colors are in the index, so
you can't really paste another image onto a GIF image and expect it to work

[Gimp-user] Question about Gimp 2.6.1 on Ubuntu Linux

2008-11-12 Thread Tom Williams
I'm running Gimp 2.6.1 on Ubuntu 8.10 (64-bit) and I've noticed when I
load an image, the image window stays behind the toolbox and the layers
window all the time. I didn't see a preference where I could control
always on top behavior.

This makes it challenging for me to work with images.

Is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks!

Or use the Tab key to toggle visibility of the Toolbox and Docks on and off.

I'm just learning how to do this myself, using the tutorial at the end of
Chapter 3 in Akkana Peck's excellent book Beginning GIMP ISBN 1590595874.
I'm using The Gimp 2.2 in Debian 4.0r3 Etch.

Make the background of the image transparent:
  Layer Transparency Add Alpha Channel
Tools Selection Tools By Color Select
  Click on background color.
Ctrl-X to delete the background color.
  File Save

For the image you pointed to (roll.gif), I highlighted Frame 9
(in the Layers window)
which had a white background, The Add Alpha Channel was
already gray, so I did the By Color Select, then clicked on
the white Background and pressed Ctrl-X, then saved the
GIF image. (Save as Animation!)

Do this for each frame that has a white background.
I tested it by creating a simple HTML page with a black background
that displayed the modified animated GIF image. You may have to
click on several places in the background to get isolated spots
of white.

html
!-- roll.html: test transparency of white background --
body bgcolor=black
img src=roll.gif
/body
/html

I think I've covered all the details?

[Gimp-user] Global Python Developer Job Stats

2008-11-12 Thread jk33
Hey All,

We compiled some data on Python trends that show some (hopefully) very
interesting info for our industry, especially on the growth of Python
freelancer trends and global job growth. I think this shows some fascinating
wage stats about our fellow Python developers. Check our Python Developer Job
Trends from USA, India, Russia.. and let me know if anyone sees anything
similar. Also, if there is specific data anyone would like to know, ping me
and I may be able to reach into our database and pull them up for our forum
readers!

Hope this information is helpful.

[Gimp-user] Intro 2.6.2 question

2008-11-12 Thread Noel Stoutenburg
Gimp user; subscriber to the GIMP newsgroup (comp.graphics.apps.gimp),
whose ISP is dropping USENET support, hence subscribing here.

Using GIMP 2.6.2 on WIN XP, I find behavior that I didn't find before.
If I have an image, a toolbox, and the layers dialog open at once, and
move the toolbox and layers dialog open at once, the most recently
selected item is on top of the previously selected item. However, if I
move the image (and main toolbar) behind either one, the image is always
behind the other two. I checked the bug reports, but don't see any
reports of this behavior.

Is this a new configuration option I haven't found yet? Or is this a
bug, that only affects me?

[Gimp-user] Is there a lightweight Window Manager that properly supports utility windows?

2008-11-12 Thread Hood Family

I guess the title says it all. The page for Gimp 2.5x
said Metacity was the only Window Manager that properly supported
utility windows. The page for 2.6 doesn't say this, so I presume it is
no longer the case.

I've found Openbox almost works properly, except that the utility
windows stay above the file open and save dialogues. Does anyone know
if this is a window manager problem or just a Gimp bug or a GTK bug or
something else?
Are there any other lightweight window managers that support utility
windows?

Thanks.

[Gimp-user] dealing with Nikon NEF RAW files?

2008-11-12 Thread peter kostov
Hi!

Is there anyone here, who has a Nikon DSLR and is shooting in RAW? If
yes - how do you deal with your .NEF images?

On a CD that came with my camera there was a program called 'Picture
Project'.
Until recently I used it under Wine and was pretty happy with it. It
worked slow, but it allowed me to enter IPTC information, make basic
image changes (brightness, black point compensation, sharpen, rotate,
crop) - almost everything I need before exporting to TIF. The exported
files were with really good quality - one that I can not achieve with
Ufraw or other tools. Unfortunately I had to delete my .wine dir and
now I can't install Picture Project anymore - it asks for a product
key?! How is that I don't know - it used to be a free program... or was
it a trial version?
Anyway, this product isn't maintained by Nikon any longer. Now they
offer ViewNX, which doesn't work under Wine (installs fine, but crashes
when you try to do anything with it). Capture NX requires .NET and is
not working too, neither under Wine, nor under Mono or pnet. Is not free
either and I don't like to use illegal software.

So now I am in trouble!

I know about Ufraw and I use it, but the results I am achieving with it
are not so good as they were with the Nikon utility.

I found this too: http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/pspi.html and
thought that I could give the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in a try, but
unfortunately this isn't working for me too - I am on Gentoo and in
order to compile pspi I need the PhotoshopAPI, which was distributed
with Photoshop 6.0 only and as you may guess I don't have it, it is not
available on the net anymore too.

I know I could install a virtual machine and a whole Window$ on top of
it and and no thanks.

Please help!!! How do you deal with this situation?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
