[Gimp-user] About editing text layers
So i need to have Hello in one text layer and World in another one ?!!! Thats correct. In the current version you would have to make two seperate words. In the next release of GIMP (2.8) the text tool will be enhanced as you can see in this preview under step 4: http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/gimp-2-8-features-preview-april-2010.html -- Bernhard S. [Gimp-user] New Image from Visible Layers?

[Gimp-user] Brush edit problem
I want to create a straight line that's two pixels wide. There's a brush that's 1px, and another that's 3px, so I created a new brush, made it a square one and selected a radius of 1.0px. If I do this, the brush appears to be 3px in width. So I tried various values. 0.7px radius still gives me a brush that is 3px wide. However, 0.6px radius gives me one that is 1px wide. I don't seem to be able to find any setting that makes it 2px wide, and neither can I understand the relationship between radius and the actual size of the brush. The same thing happens with higher values - anything from 0.7 up to 1.6 gives me a brush that's 3px wide, then at 1.7 it jumps to 5 pixels. Is it impossible to have a brush that is an even number of pixels wide, and if so, why? Better use a path and use the stroke path option in the paths dialog! You can enter a specific value there, and you can use different line types too (from solid to dashed and/or dotted). pretty cool... Hope that helps ;) -- Bernhard S. [Gimp-user] Text entry-keyboard captured as shortcuts
Oh, one more thing, how can I enter text the old way instead of using the on canvas option? I've made this selection, but don't remember how I got there. I believe the on-canvas text editing is the default for GIMP 2.7. If you prefer the old way you can select Use Editor in the options of the Text tool. You can also tell GIMP to save tool options on exit to make this the default for you. However, I cannot test this on my Windows installation, because each time I click to put text GIMP crashes. But this is a development release, so I somehow guess this is already fixed in a next release. I guess I should install GIMP 2.7 on Ubuntu (from Git) to see how this feature is supposed to work. The text tool is still a work in progress, as everything in GIMP 2.7. I guess the current state has not been merged to the git master. as for now you need to select the text layer in the layers dialog, then click the text on the canvas. No cursor is shown, but you can remove and write text. you can also double click a word to select it. There are some more bugs currently i guess... If text sunndely disappears or is duplicated you can use CTRL+Z to undo it and continue the work then. -- Bernhard S. [Gimp-user] Fit text to path problem GIMP 2.8 Windows XP
Sorry guys - newb question I've been trying to fit some text to a path, created the path ok, Layers menu | Text along path seems ok, Path along Selection from Paths dialog seems OK, clicked the eye icon next to my path to hide it ok - the text shows correctly fit with the pink stuff around it but when I export to GIF etc. the text which has been fitted along the path isn't visible - same problem if I display the path ... Am I missing something obvious ? Thanks in advance The tool creates a new path from the text after you aligned it to a path. You need to make a selection of that newly created text path and dthen fill it with a certain color... hope that helps! -- Bernhard S. [Gimp-user] How to add transparency to half an image
Hi all, I'm new here. I'm trying to add a transparency to the bottom half of an image, make it lighter so I can emphasize the text on the image. I keep cropping the image and getting frustrated. You can use layer masks to achieve this effect. Right click the layer in the layer dialog add layer mask. a white area is displayed in the layer dialog beside the image. on this area you can paint with any tool. whice color represents fully visibility, black represents full transparency. if you paint in any gray tone it will make the image half transparent. hope that helps, -- Bernhard S. [Gimp-user] How to slice the imgae for web
Michael Schumacher wrote: Bob Long wrote: To follow up, GIMP 2.6.6 for Windows does not include that (referring to Filters Web Slice) Please explain how you came to this conclusion, (not that I expect is should, as it relies on Python); especially as this is no reason for something to be missing on Microsoft Windows (Perl-based would be one, for example). Well, I'd been running 2.6.5 on Windows XP; open an image, add a couple of guides and Filters|Web shows only Image Map... (and Semi-Flatten, but greyed out). So I upgrade (I did not uninstall 2.6.5) to 2.6.6 today (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gimp-2.6.6-i686-setup.exe via gimp.org links). Same results. I've never installed Python on this PC. So, am I missing something by looking in the wrong place? Are you saying you'd expect Slice to be there in a standard installation of GIMP on Windows, even without Python installed, and without installing additional plug-ins? I'm a web developer, and I never used any slicing tool, although I use GIMP mainly for my website mockups. They way I do is simple: I draw a rectangle selection over the part I need, then I press CTRL+SHIFT+C (copy visible) and then CTRL+SHIFT+V (paste the copied to a new image). Then I save the new image as .png or .jpg. I do it that way because you don't need so many images in most cases... Also there are often color gradients in websites where you only need a 1px image that is repeated through CSS. I doubt that there is much time to spare using such slicing tools. Maybe you like this way too ;) -- Bernhard S. (via www.gimpusers.com) ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

[Gimp-user] Docking Problems
Hi everyone. I was working with GIMP 2.6.4 on windows XP when I managed to blunder away my toolbar tab from the tool box. I figured out how to open the dialog but it absolutely refuses to re-dock with my toolbox window and I was hoping someone would walk me through the process. I see the little triangle on the dialog and when I open it and click dock, it does nothing. I have tried installing Gimp 2.6.5 and reinstalling 2.6.4 but each time the dialog is seperate from the toolbox. Thank you for taking the time to read my request! Hi! It is a bit difficult in the first time when you loose the tool options - but it is really easy if you understand how docking in GIMP works. I made a screenshot to better show the process: http://www.gimpusers.com/images/privat/drag_tools.png you've to open up Windows / Dockable Dialogs / Tool Options first to view the options - then drag them to the tools window. You HAVE TO click and move the bold text title - in my case this is Move. [Gimp-user] Gimp 2.6.1 on Ubuntu 8.10
Hi, I'm posting this again, since I really would like to check out the new features in Gimp 2.6. As I posted a few weeks ago, Gimp 2.6.1 crashes each time I try to perform a filter, color adjustment, etc., so that I had to install 2.4.7 in order to have a working bitmap editor. This happened since I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10. Someone suggested that it might have to do with my outdated hardware (AMD K6 II/350 MHz), but since I don't have the money right now to buy a new computer, I would like to know if anyone has an idea what I could do to fix this problem. When running Gimp out of a shell, I am getting: (script-fu:5142): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: script-fu: gimp_wire_read(): error Illegal instruction My guess is that it might have to do with GEGL, but on the other hand I am assuming that Synaptic would automatically install all the required packages. (I don't want to have to compile anything; if there's a fix for it I need to install additional packages, I would prefer .deb files.) I did have the latest 'libgimp' installed (I downgraded to the version for Gimp 2.4.7 in the meantime), and I am not using compiz (as Chris asked me the last time I posted on this.) Especially after reading this very good thorough review of Gimp 2.6, I would like to check out the Gimp's new possibilities. Two thing I am personally missing are a) 16-bit support, as well as b) better anti-aliasing. While there are workarounds to improve the latter, Gimp still doesn't output the quality of say, Photoshop. I especially become aware of this when using curves to get a chromium effect, or applying 'Lighting Effects', where I am frequently getting 'stripes' instead of smooth gradients. I don't know, though, how much this has been improved upon in Gimp 2.6. TIA, Claus The stripes you're mentioning come from the limited support of bit-depth (8 bit per channel in GIMP - even in 2.6). So upgrading to 2.6 would not fix these stripes. As for your crash-problem: I've no idea what the problem of this is or how to fix it but you can try if other .deb-packages work instead of the ubuntu 8.10 out of box-version. you'll find the link to it on our downloads-section: http://www.gimpusers.com/gimp-download.php best regards, -- Bernhard S. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
