I can confirm that JP2 files cannot be opened in at least development

You do know that .atn files are actions, not images, right?

GIMP doesn't support those out of box. GIMP# has a plugin for applying
Photoshop actions, but it's a partial support, and there's no
guarantee GIMP# works on modern GIMP reliably.

Nothing ;) You just need to use the standalone version until the
plugin code is adjusted to benefit from high bit depth support in dev
version of GIMP.

Sample points are currently limited to just 4 in the UI ("backend"
supports more), and there is no PDB API to access them from scripts.

So yes, theoretically it would be entirely possible to make as many
sample points as needed, then run a script that would export positions
of all sample points to something like CSV. For this to happen,
someone will have to:

1) adjust UI to allow for more sample points;
2) write PDB API;
3) write a script to access sample points via PDB API and export their
positions.

Volunteers are more than just welcome.

There is _some_ experimental support in GEGL for multithreading. If
you want to test it, please use GEGL_THREADS= in
the environment along with dev version of GIMP.

E.g.

$ GEGL_THREADS=4 gimp-2.9

I'm not 100% sure which part of GIMP features are covered by
multithreading via GEGL, Øyvind Kolås is your guy here.

might confuse someone into thinking that the list is maintained by
GIMP developers. The Gutenprint team did not complete the rebranding

This not entirely correct. Or, to be more precise, this is entirely incorrect.

Unstable version of GIMP has a plugin that reads/export from/to a
number of file formats supported in GEGL. One of them is NEF, which is
supposed to be loaded via libraw (not dcraw), but doesn't appear to be
loaded properly for some reason.

The stable version of GIMP doesn't have this plugin and, therefore,
doesn't have this issue. Therefore, the solution is to stick to the
stable version until this is resolved one way or another.

Windows vs. Linux are irrelevant.

Photoshop is irrelevant (ACR is a plugin, just like UFRaw).

This is because your original background layer is a photo that doesn't
have an alpha channel. Just add an alpha channel to your photo layer.

Somewhat contrary to what Pat suggested, I would rather suggest using
any free software for creating slideshows.

Typically they allow:

- adding a bunch of JPEG files to create animated transitions between them;
- adding a sound track of sorts (MP3, WAV etc.);
- rendering a video file out of all that.

I know for a fact that this sort of software exist on Linux, and I'm
sure there should be free options for Windows and Mac.

As Pat already mentioned, we have no control over 3rd party websites
like gimpusers.com, but having the kind of content you are looking for
on gimp.org is something we would benefit from. Although I have to say
I'm in the "showcase" camp rather than in the "testimonial" camp.

Now, as for the print media specifically, I probably know just a few
people who have hands-on experience with GIMP there, since that use
case is not GIMP's forte so far. moreover, making GIMP marginally
capable to be usable for the print media involves installing a 3rd
party plugin, which doesn't make it all easier to promote GIMP as a
tool for the desktop publishing crowd :)

It's mostly likely KDE messing up the GTK+ theme. KDE used to have a

Composite modes: that's just Porter-Duff operators, see e.g.

[Gimp-user] 2016 project report and the funding of GIMP/GEGL development

We recently published our (regrettably belated) annual project report:

We tried to keep it short, so it's only a few minutes read.

There are, however, more news.

First of all, last week, Michael Natterer and Øyvind Kolås started
cleaning up libgimp to prepare it for the v2.10 release which will
happen some time later this year. Most of the work is currently
happening in the code related to layer blending modes. The refactoring
involves introducing streamlined workflow for handling linear pixel
data. More work will be done at the end of January during a week-long
project meeting in Barcelona (details to follow separately).

Which brings us to the next major topic.

As you very well know, we don't organize project-level paid
development at this time; instead we encourage personal fundraisers
that focus on particular missing features in GIMP. One of such
enterprises was recently started by Øyvind Kolås.

Øyvind has been working on GEGL since mid-2000s, he's the principal
developer of that project with a 42% share of all changes. He is now
looking for community's support to further improve this engine.

The more time he can spend on GEGL, the more we can improve
performance of GIMP (v2.10 and onwards) and the faster we can
implement more advanced features, such as layer effects,
non-destructive editing, and CMYK/spot colors support (in the 3.x
series of releases).

Additionally, if you want GIMP to have better animation capabilities,
you can support ZeMarmot, upcoming GIMP-powered animated movie by

It wasn't an official build of GIMP. Official builds of GIMP don't
ship with the 3rd party UFRaw plug-in that opens raw files.

1. File -> New...
2. Change units to inches, click OK.

Now every time you use that dialog, GIMP will use inches by default.
GIMP will also remember that preference across sessions.

Alternatively, you can open the Preferences dialog, go to the Default
Image page, and set desired default image size in the units you need
(or just change the units). This setting will also be preserved across
sessions.

You were probably referring to Pantone and Hexachrome. None of those
spot color catalogs are related to Adobe. None of them are color
models :)

The first two things I would do is:

1. Check brush tools' settings like blend mode and opacity.
2. Check foreground color.

Personally, I have a problem understanding your response.

John asked a very specific question and outlined the exact features
he's missing to get his job done. No amount of unlearning Photoshop
will get GIMP to send the data that he needs. Those are completely
orthogonal things.

There you are. At 2736 x 1824 resolution you _will_ run into problems with GIMP.

A partial solution is to install a new theme from
https://bitbucket.org/paynekj/paynekj-gimp-scripts/src/2e8e87faf5eaaf6036e0d8b68ff9f6f37a3f0421/themes/?at=default.
Either Color-32.7z or Color-48.7z should do.

language detection is broken on macOS Sierra, and the wrong language
is used in the user interface of GIMP. If you've run into this issue,
you can help us investigate this further.

Please download and run a script that Kristian Rietveld wrote, then
reply to this email with the output. The script will tell us what
language environment variables are set on your macOS Sierra system.

as e.g. script.py

2. In the terminal window, please run:

$ python script.py

3. Please select the output, copy it with Cmd-C, and paste it to your email.

You open an image.
You select the Crop tool.
You use it on whatever files you have.

What is the actual issue with cropping images? Please be more specific.

We do not have an official forum. This is a mailing list, an entirely
different thing with an entirely different group of admins. Someone
created a way to post messages to this list from gimpusers.com where
you appear to have registered. This does add confusion for both older
and younger people. We hope that the issue will be resolved somehow by
whoever runs gimpusers.com.
