images more often.

For a complete list of changes since 2.9.2 please see the

changing the folder to "en" corrected it.

Here's another tip: To get "Context Help", FIRST you click on "Context

OR, if you have already chosen a tool, click on "Context Help", then go

I installed Gimp 2.8.16 (from gimp-2.8.16-setup.exe) and Gimp-help 2.8.2
(from
gimp-help-2-2.8.2-en_GB-setup.exe) on Windows. Both were installed to the
folder

"C:\Program Files\GIMP 2". However, when I run Gimp and select Help from the
Help menu, I get a dialog telling me that "The gimp user manual is not
installed
on your computer", and giving me the option to use the online version. When
I
have a look under "C:\Program Files\GIMP 2", the help files have been
installed

to "C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\help\en_GB".

On a hunch I renamed en_GB to en, and the help system then works. So it
looks
like the British English help cannot be seen by Gimp unless it's install
folder

is renamed.

Re: [Gimp-user] How to edit/modify part of an image (sub-area of animage)?

2016-08-21 Thread Rick Strong
Rhimbo: Try using a Quick Mask and a black to white Gradient to select the
area you want to work on. Then use curves (or levels) to lighten or darken
your selected area. You can also paint on the gradient mask to include or
exclude things from what you will be darkening or lightening.

Quick Mask is Shift+Q in multi-window mode or the little dotted rectangle at
the lower left end of the scroll bars in the single-window mode. Or, Select

See Quick Masks and Gradients in the manual. I suggest testing first on an

Hello everyone,

Just for context, let me say that I'm still relatively unskilled in Gimp...

I would like to modify part of a photo, for example a .jpg photo. For
instance,
I want to adjust the exposure or lighting of some sub-area of the whole
photo.

How can I do that?

The context of my question is as follows. Without using a neutral density
filter, often it's very difficult (nearly impossible!) to shoot certain
scenes
so that all parts of the image have the optimal exposure. For example, the
sky
might have the right exposure but a building or foliage might be too dark.
Or,

depending on your choice of image area for metering measurement, the
ground/foliage might be properly exposed but the sky over-exposed. I have
many

photos right now for which I'd like to lighten the dark areas without
over-exposing the sky.

I've tried playing with selecting a rectangle and changing lighting but I
must
be making user errors. Could someone please point me in the right
direction?

Many thanks,

Yes.

I have thought about using flash off camera but I am worried about
knocking it in small places.

Off-camera flash, or steady lights (you can get LED lights fairly
cheaply on ebay or aliexpress but I have not tried them), or put
something over the flash to direct the light upwards.

Since you still have good detail there; you could check in darktable
(assuming you're on Linux) or rawtherapee and see if any of the detail
can be recovered, but I doubt it.

An LED macro ring light is another possibility. But best is if the
light comes from the side, so it doesn't bounce off and hit the camera
lens. See if you can go without flash at all.

Re: [Gimp-user] Download GIMP to a large (1.5TB) outside drive.

2016-09-02 Thread Rick Strong

I have most of my photo files on an external drive (Win 7).

When you click File > Open, you will see a tree directory on the left-hand
side that lists all your drives. Click on your external dive letter to get
that drive and to see a list of the folders in it. You can also navigate
down that drive to find the folder/file that you want.

Down at the bottom left you will see a space under a separator line. By
clicking on the plus sign "+" you can add a shortcut down there directly to
any folder or file you have chosen on that drive (or any other drive you
have selected). Theses shortcuts can also be deleted by clicking on the
minus "-" sign.

On the right-hand panel of the "Open" dialogue, you can see a preview of a
file. Click on a file name, then click on the panel to view.

Hope that helps.

1. Open GIMP (***with no new image or photo***).
2. Choose EDIT > PREFERENCES > DEFAULT IMAGE > IMAGE SIZE.
3. Under image size set whatever dimensions you want for new images.
4. ***In the last drop-down box on that line you will see "px" and a down
triangle.*** Click the triangle and you will be presented with a selection
of types of measurements: pixels, inches, millimeters, points, etc.

5. Choose "inches". Also set whatever else you want. Click "OK"
6. This is the important step: ***Quit GIMP without opening a new image or
anything else.*** This sets "inches" as the default measurement for NEW
images.

When you Open GIMP again and click FILE > NEW, "inches" will be the
measurement system for your "NEW" files.

Re: [Gimp-user] Erasing to background color

2016-09-12 Thread Rick Strong

Try this:

If I understand you correctly, create a GIMP image with three layers.

- Top layer has the pattern of images.
- Middle layer has a heart image.
- Bottom layer has something or nothing.

- Turn off the top layer and lock it.
- Select just the heart on the middle layer. If you filled it with a solid
colour you can select by colour.
- Go back to the top layer. Turn it on and unlock it. You should see the
heart outline on the top layer.
- Delete the heart from the top layer. Your middle layer will show through
the hole where the heart outline was.
- Delete the middle layer and your bottom layer will show through. If you
want to see right through to the transparency checkerboard, delete the
bottom layer.

Hope that's what you want.

Probably any one that works with your system. A fast response time and
pressure sensitivity are good.

I have a 6.5" x 8.5" pad that I picked up at a warehouse sale that works
very well for me. Not too small, not too big. You will be moving your whole
arm across the surface, not just your hand.

Re: [Gimp-user] Color mismatch when an image is printed

2016-09-23 Thread Rick Strong
I would start by buying a monitor colour calibration device like a SPYDER
regardless of who is doing the printing, yourself at home or a print shop.
Google SPYDER. It's simple to use, fast and accurate. There are others.

If you are sending files out to a print shop send CMYK images in North
America. The preference in Europe I think is LAB. Check with your printer.
Try the US Sheetfed/un-coated profile at home or anything that matches your
paper and gets you close to your calibrated monitor image.

Re: [Gimp-user] Color mismatch when an image is printed

2016-09-24 Thread Rick Strong
I wasn’t meaning a photograph printing store, I was referring to a printing
shop that prints posters, flyers, books, etc. on paper. Like with a printing
press. However, if what the man wants is photo prints printed by someone else,
then yes, sRGB is most likely what he needs to send.

In any and all cases, ask what they want and send them that. After you have
calibrated your monitor, of course.

Don't send CMYK to a photo print shop unless they specifically ask for it. The
majority of high end US print shops want sRGB for photo prints (not books or
offset printing - in that case I'd let them do the conversion unless you know
what you're doing).

I answer on this thread, the other one (no subject) was another mistake of my
part.

So as Jan said we aren't all that fluent in typing.

My personnal reason is that I used Photoshop for 21 years now and I consider
that a program should yield to its users' needs and not the other way round.

For example I need a toggle when working on an image for which I have a sketch.
Sometimes I need to show the layer with the sketch, then hide it then show it
then hide it to see what is on the sketch that I lost on the image I built.
Pressing F8 repetitively in very rapid strokes generally do the trick. Don'
forget to half close your eyes as well😁

Another approach is to duplicate the layer you are working on and put it

1. make your page 8.5" x 11".
2. Put two layers above the base layer.
3. Import your image to the first layer.
4. Draw a 5" square on the second layer. Be sure the second layer is
transparent and show only the square.
5. Move the first layer with the image under the square and scale it
manually until it fits inside the square.

6. Delete the layer with the square.

Hello,

I want to print a texture from the game Minecraft, the creeper texture. I
have

an image file, I attached it.

I want to cut out each section of the texture and print them each at a
specific

size/scale on 8.5"x11" paper.

For example I selected and copied the face and pasted in to a new image.

How should I set the image size and canvas size and other options such that
the

face will print out on the paper at 5" square?

How should I do this? I want it to be fairly precise.

Thanks!

Send the PDF back to whoever made it and tell them to send you a PDF

If you can't get the PDF re-output as a "flat" PDF, your simplest route may

Re: [Gimp-user] Making settings persistent in GIMP

2016-10-09 Thread Rick Strong

Hello Alexandre:

You have two places to "reset"defaults in the Default Dialogs image
(attached), plus an "OK" button(?).

Will clicking on either of those two buttons do the same thing, i.e. RESET
the Dialog Defaults to the NEW, user-chosen settings?

Or, will those buttons RESTORE the ORIGINAL "factory" defaults?
Or, will the TOP button RESTORE the original "factory" settings and the
BOTTOM button RESET the settings to the user's current choices?
Or, will clicking one of those buttons GO BACK to the PREVIOUS settings that
the user had been using (but not the original "Factory" settings)?
What is the difference between "RESET" and "OK"? Should the "OK" button be
renamed "SAVE" (or "SAVE SETTINGS")?

Sorry to be pedantic but the circular arrow can mean many things these days.
A Tool Tip balloon might help understanding if the words can't be changed.

Many appologies, I gave bad info on the nip2 for windows download. Not
Nip2

You have to go back a couple of sub-versions to get a windows
installer.

http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/supported/8.2/win32/nip2-8.2b-setup.zip

This in a Win10 Virtual machine (with limited resorces) just to see
how it installs.

Installs to a strange location but let it go there. You will find it
in the Win10 applications. See the screenshot

Thank you. Yes, the program works but if I load the png in it, it instantly
crashes with a typical Windows error that doesn't tell me anything. If I run
the
program again it asks me if I want to delete 319.50 MB of temp files from
the

temp area. Clearly it is doing something.

Assuming you don't want the fabric of the Tee to show through anywhere in
the interior of the tux, you only need one solid white screen of the whole
tux with no bleed. Overprint the yellow details then the black.

Or, put the white down in the area where you need white and yellow.
Overprint the yellow on, then the black.

3. type in the command using your image name

Post the information and hope someone will assist. I do know that nip2

It says:

They do here. Is this under Linux? Which window manager / desktop
environment? The GIMp that came with the distribution? Which version?
Which distribution? Is this Ubuntu with Unity?

Most often when people forget to mention their operating system it's
either Windows or Mac :) but GIMP is developed and tested primarily on
Linux systems.

Also, you could try "single window mode" (from GIMp's Windows menu) and
see if that helps. It may also depend on the specific filter you're
running.

You have mentioned my name so I'll respond:
- What platform are you on (Win, Mac, Linux, other)?
- What version of GIMP are you using?
- What is the problem?

Re: [Gimp-user] to much shine!!!

2016-11-08 Thread Rick Strong

Working on the file with a NEW NAME (so you don't mess up the original):
1. With the lasso tool, select the bright areas that you want to darken.
2. Make sure to feather the selection a lot—like 150 or more px.!
3. Colors > Brightness make it a negative value (less than zero).
4. Turn Preview ON to see the effect. Don't overdo it.

CTRL+T will get rid of the selection "marching ants" outline. It's easier to
see the effect you are having.

Good luck,
Rick S.

"7z" is a compression program like Win Zip.
Google "7z" to get a free copy so you can access the theme files mentioned

There you are. At 2736 x 1824 resolution you _will_ run into problems with
GIMP.

A partial solution is to install a new theme from

Either Color-32.7z or Color-48.7z should do.

Hello,

I am trying to open a PSD in GIMP. Although I am aware that not all
layers of a PSD might open in this case the whole psd is not opening
due to some CMYK setting error.

Check attachement for the same.

Is there any workaround to open these kinds of PSDs?

Thanks

Gimp is a RGB raster editor and is not the best tool for creating a suitable
file from a PS CMYK template.

The CMYK file needs to be converted to RGB first.

I'm helping a friend of mine create a business card for a new business.
I created the card in GIMP and it looks great! The plan is to order
cards through VistaPrint. Anyway, according to the VistaPrint website,
they recommend uploading designs in a CMYK mode. Since I created my
card in GIMP, it's in RGB mode.

Would it be safe to convert my image from RGB to CMYK, using ImageMagick
for example, or should I recreate it using a different tool, like
Scribus? I'm a Linux user. Alternatively, I could send the image to a
friend who has PhotoShop and have her convert the image to CYMK mode for me.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

I don’t know.
But RGB2CMYK is a hell of a lot easier to use and for that reason it will
probably work better. Just upload your file and it’s done.

I’m a graphic designer/photographer not a geek (not any more, anyway). I like
things that work right out of the box and this online conversion worked for me.

I'd recommend to not fiddle with it now. Vistaprint will do their own
conversion, which is likely to be better than your conversion, since
they do know their own processes.

In fact I had lots of "fun" some time ago, where I absolutely sent them
a CMYK PDF file and they still fiddled with it, adding a little bit of
black to my vibrant yellow, resulting in quite dull colors...

Re: [Gimp-user] Cannot open PSD -CMYK setting (Rick Strong)

Klaus is right on when he says that the RGB colour gamut is wider than the
CMYK gamut. Therefore some rgb colours will end up looking differently when
printed in cmyk.

I found this website http://www.printernational.org/rgb-versus-cmyk.php
has a pretty good explanation with illustration of the difference. It also
puts out good information about graphic design in general.

Hello,

for both topics of gimp-user-list Digest, Vol 62, Issue 17: use the open
source program Krita. It is an image manipulation program, natively built
for Linux, installers are also available for Windows and Mac OS X, that can
handle both ways, rgb to cmyk and cmyk to rgb. If it can handle psds I don´t
know. Notice: rgb to cmyk will often end up in dull colors, because the
color space cmyk is somewhat else than the colorspace of rgb - not all
colors of rgb are resembled in cmyk.

Re: [Gimp-user] overlapping images

Export images to PNG which supports transparency:

1. Put your images on a layer above the white base layer. (I assume you are
creating the images.)

2. Crop out the excess background to just the image.
3. Delete the base layer. Your image should be floating above a
checkerboard, indicating that it's transparent below.

4. Export your image as a PNG.
5. Import/Place your PNG image file where you want it on your master sticker
sheet.

Hope that works for you.

I went through and cleaned a whole load of fonts out of my Windows 8
system -

including a lot of system fonts. That change is not reflected in GIMP, which
persists in showing me the old system fonts including the non-western
languages,
which, being a Westerner, I do not use. I can confirm that they are not in
my

listed under Edit - Preferences - Folders - Fonts.

So where are these font references stored. I'm talking about fonts like
Batang -
which, when I select it, does not display Batang font, just Western. Are
they
hard coded in GIMP somewhere? Does GIMP pick up what's installed when it
itself

is installed, and then never forget them?

3. Crop out the extra wall on the left and right sides.

5. Make sure the Preview box has a checkmark in it.
6. Move the CENTER slider at the top, where it says 1.0, a bit to the right
until it says .80.

7. Look at the results. Adjust it either way to your taste.
8. Save the GIMP file as an .XCF.
9. Export it as a JPG (File > Export AS) or anything else.

Next time, (the wedding?) if you have to photograph people outside in bright
sunshine, have an assistant hold up a large white sheet or piece of white
paper on the shadow side of the person or couple. That way the shadows won't
be quite so dark. You should be able to see a difference before you take the
picture.

Also, have your couple stand further away from the wall so that their
shadows are cast on the ground and the wall is out of focus.

Re: [Gimp-user] Driving me crazy!!!

2016-11-26 Thread Rick Strong
You are right. Changing the part you want changes the parts you DON'T want
to change. That's why we try to get the light right when the shot is being
taken. Some people even use the little flash on their camera to "fill in"
the shadows when photographing people outdoors in strong light.

Try playing around with the "Dodge and Burn" tool in GIMP. Dodge means to
hold back the light i.e make and area brighter. You would use this in the
shadow areas of the people. Burn means to increase the light or make an area
darker.

Feather your brush and start slowly, exposure at about 10%. Ctrl+Z will
cancel the effect and you can start over. Practice on something that you
don't want to keep.

I'm a newbie to GIMP too, but used Adobe CS for many years.
Over the years, I have been helped many, many times by folks on lists just
like this. (Remember Pagemaker?)
I've found that the lists that endure have a "smile in their voice" and say
"please" and "thank you" a lot.

Cheers,

Try playing around with the "Dodge and Burn" tool in GIMP. Dodge means to
hold back the light i.e make and area brighter. You would use this in the
shadow areas of the people. Burn means to increase the light or make an

Re: [Gimp-user] Resizing

2016-11-28 Thread Rick Strong

Cropping and Resizing are two different actions.

To CROP means to cut away stuff so that you are left with only—in your
case—a 2 inch square image.

To RESIZE means you have reduced an image in size, not cut anything away. If
your original image was not EXACTLY square you can never end up with a
perfectly square smaller image. This is because RESIZING makes things
smaller, or bigger, by keeping the proportions or aspect ratio of the image
the same as the original.

The tool you want is the CROP tool. TOOLS > TRANSFORM TOOLS > CROP.
- Check FIXED > Aspect Ratio.
- SIZE > Inches (In)
- 2.0 , 2.0
- Make the cropping square bigger or smaller to fit by moving the corner
boxes.

- Press Enter.
- Save it as a GIMP .XCF, then EXPORT AS whatever you want: JPEG, PNG,
whatever your lab wants

- Put your cropped image into 4 x 6 document that will go to the photo lab.

Smile at the good job you have done! {8>)

Cheers,
Rick S.

Re: [Gimp-user] Changing colours in gimp

I thought I would play around with finding a solution for this, but after
running up against a "middle button click" (I hadn't heard of it either) in
some obscure dialogue I couldn't find again, I gave up.

For the uninitiated, a "middle button click" means clicking your scroll
wheel, assuming you have a clickable scroll wheel. Even if you do, and I do,
it probably won't work with GIMP. Why not just use a standard left- or
right-button click? KISS.

I really like your train shots though, Walter.

Hi

I am having great fun using GIMP now I've finally started to experiment with
it,

but I want to know if there is an easy way to recolour an image from one
specific colour to another.

For example, if a vehicle is light grey, can I recolour it to a specific
shade
of blue? I've tried various methods, which mirror the tints and shades of
the

original, but they all seem to end up with a much lighter colour than I want
(because the original is such a pale grey).

I'm ultimately trying to do things like this:
http://www.fictitiousliveries.co.uk/

But to look really good they need to be specific shades.

Thanks

While you are making some "Fill with" changes, how about
removing these from under the menu item "Edit":

Fill with FG color
Fill with BG color
Fill with Pattern

Stroke Selection
Stroke Path

And putting them under one of:
Select; Image; Colors; or Tools.

Any one would be a much more logical place to find a "Selection Fill" tool.

Thank you,

The standard Gimp gradients are normally marked as non-writable so you can
not

edit them , see:

Edit -> Preferences -> Folders -> Gradients

Best leave it that way and duplicate the gradient you want to edit. That
saves

to your Gimp profile.

Does it seem like this question comes up on a monthly basis?

GIMP could REALLY use some ability to make ad-hoc edits to its otherwise
ready-only assets (gradients and brush dynamics, vector brushes, etc.).
Requiring users to duplicate one of these before they're allowed to change
any of those settings is one reason I dumped literally ALL of the preset
brush dynamics from my GIMP installation. And, I'd wager, it's probably one
of many reasons why GIMP 2.8 moved 'brush size' out of the brush editor and
into the tool options.

But -- (less rant, more on the topic, I agree) -- if you can't duplicate
something from the Gradient editor then go to the Gradients list and
duplicate it from there.

On the Gradient Editor there are buttons to save the current settings, or zoom
the gradient display shown in the box. It does not include a command to
duplicate the gradient.

On your Gradients palette, there should be a row of five icons at the bottom --
Edit, New, Duplicate, Delete, and Refresh. Likewise, right-clicking on a
specific gradient (or checking the arrow menu at the upper-right) should reveal
a context menu of similar options.

Lastly, if you go to Edit > Preferences and look at the Folders section, you
should have one or two entries for the Gradients folder (typically under your
user path and program path) and at least one of them should be flagged as
"writable".

etc. It is now and now I can see what you are talking about.

While GIMP has it’s weirdnesses, it’s UI is superior to the current Photoshop
CC “flat & grey” look that’s stricktly out of the 1980s. AND GIMP fits on my
screen. Plus, GIMP users are majorly helpful.

Thank you,

notice the list of gradients on the right hand panel

left click on the name of the gradient you want to duplicate (don't "open" the
gradient)

one of the icons on the bottom is duplicate. Alternatively, right click on the
name of the gradient and select duplicate.

hopefully the screenshot comes through

On the Gradient Editor there are buttons to save the current settings, or
zoom the gradient display shown in the box. It does not include a command to
duplicate the gradient.

On your Gradients palette, there should be a row of five icons at the bottom
-- Edit, New, Duplicate, Delete, and Refresh. Likewise, right-clicking on a
specific gradient (or checking the arrow menu at the upper-right) should reveal
a context menu of similar options.

Lastly, if you go to Edit > Preferences and look at the Folders section, you
should have one or two entries for the Gradients folder (typically under your
user path and program path) and at least one of them should be flagged as
"writable".

I finally found a GIMP theme that presents a neutral gray "look"
suitable for editing images against without introducing perceptual bias,
that does not also present useability issues re icon and menu entries
etc. It's called Tactile; I don't find it in a quick web search ATM,
but I do recall it was part of a big bundle of themes.

Sometimes when an image is going into a context where I know the
background color that will surround it, I reset the canvas padding color
to match that. This provides "best obtainable" perceptual results and
avoids possible surprises i.e. unintended color matching with the
background against which the image will be seen.

I'm fairly new to GIMP and just wondering about how difficult it would be to
recreate a fairly simple 3' x 6' sign design produced in Word 2013 to an .ai
file.

I just trying to get an idea of what kind of learning curve is ahead of me

The graphics company recreated our design, but it lost some of the nuances
(which, admittedly, are somewhat minor, but we would like to try to keep
them if

possible).

I'll see if I can attach the original Word design in .pdf and the graphics
company's version...

Any help would be much appreciated...breadcrumbs, tips, anything that gets
us

going in the right direction. Thank you.

So, I'm trying to do something fairly straightforward- take a pinterest

and change the colour to match the branding of my website. What I've done is
take the image, create a path, open a new layer and colour in the selection.
The
problem is that instead of changing the colour to the green I have chosen,
it's

changing it to a pink instead. Any ideas why?
I've attached a screenshot to kinda show what I'm talking about.

Anything you can copy to the clipboard from say, an Excel Lookup Table, can
be pasted into a new GIMP image. A GIMP script can take what's on the
clipboard, format it and output it. To do it seamlessly I guess requires a
higher order script to invoke the Excel script and then the GIMP script.
Powershell may be the answer.

Hi,
is there any willing member to hlep me started with data driven graphics? I
used

I need to do some graphics on the go, during livestream on YouTube. I
started to
use Powershell as a main control interface. Recently I found out that I
could

script to have dynamic images during the stream.

I do most ice hockey broadcasting with no budget, mainly becouse my sons
play

it. I would like to have some graphics when a goal is scored or penalty is
assesed. I would want to have goal scorer or penalty receiver.

Prior the game I can enter roster and when event occours I would enter only
jersey number and GIMP would make me a graphic based on jersey number and
data

from roster.

Something similar is now done with Photoshop, but I have to do it manualy -
only

data is taken from database (CSV file).

If somebody would want to help I would be really happy. I do not need the
whole

script, just something to start. I would figure out the rest eventualy.

Thank you in advance.

Subject: [Gimp-user] Printing a poster file issues

Please go easy on me as I have not done anything like this before and I am
sure

I am making a stupid mistake somewhere.

I need to create a poster that is roughly 1.3m x 2m and the printer requires
at

least 300 DPI.

I have created my poster in GIMP and it consists of 7 layers - x1 large
picture
that fills the poster and several other small logos/pictures/text. The
pixels

per inch setting in GIMP was set as 350.

The GIMP file is roughly 687Mb and when I export it to a PDF the PDF file is
roughly 375Mb.

When I try to open the PDF file in Adobe Reader DC I get an error - out of
memory and the file does not open.

GIMP version - 2.8.18
Adobe Reader DC version - 2015.020.20042

When I export to PDF from GIMP I ensure that the options to ignore hidden
layers
is ticked and also that the option to convert to vector data type if
possible is

ticked.

After getting stuck here I removed the hidden layers from the GIMP file ie
deleted them - they are used for alignment and information when designing.
After this the file size was very slightly smaller and Adobe Reader could
open
the file. However when I tried to print it out in A3 sheets to check to see
how
it looks Adobe hung up on the flattenning stage. So I then went back to
GIMP
and flattened it in GIMP so that everything was combined into one layer.
Now
when I go back to Adobe to print I have no hanging up on flattening however
it
hangs up on "print 0%". When I check the task manager Adobe is using up
plenty

of processing so it is doing something...

Having no experience in doing something like this I dont know if the file
sizes

involved are "normal" or not.

Can someone tell me if the file sizes I am experiencing are to be expected -
I

would assume they are.
Should I be able to print a PDF this size out?
Can anyone see anything that I am doing wrong?
Can anyone suggest how to get my PDF file out and that will be able to be
printed when sent to the printer? Would a professional printer have some
sort

of software that will allow them to print a PDF that I can't print?

That's very unfortunate. From what I could see on the Release Notes page,
the icons are not that big. Being grey-on-grey and two-dimensional also

No you won't be able to use Color-32 as it's a full theme not an icon theme.

Also, unless some work has been done to allow for users to select larger
icons, GIMP's use of the icon-theme mechanisn will prevent you from having
larger icons.

Rick S.

Does this not depend on the theme. In a (linux) Gimp 2.9.5 there are both
32x32

and 48x48 px icons installed, both color and legacy.

The default themes give a bit-of-a-cramped toolbox: attachment part 1

An alternative might use the smaller icon set: attachment part 2

Icons and themes are split, there is a choice of colour and legacy as well
as

the others.

Hello
How do I get Gimp to print larger than postage stamp picts?

I have tried to research on line and just keep going in circles. Give me the
good old printed manual over these on line things. Updates online are OK,
but I am a book reader and due to injuries I cannot sit at the CPU for long
periods of time. Have to keep shifting and walking around often.

Haven't used the program for long but I need a the very least 4x6" and
larger when an image is worth printing larger. Got about 3000 4x6" sheets!
Use this size for general stuff.

Wanted to print larger today with Gimp, but after three postage stamps and
no obvious instruction to print larger, I quit.

etc...

[Gimp-user] Black page prints from Inkscape

2017-01-13 Thread Rick Strong
Just in case someone on this list uses Inkscape 0.91 r13725 on windows x64.

You may be getting black backgrounds or black frames in your prints when the
background should be white. This is a known bug in this version of Inkscape.
There are two workarounds:

1. In document preferences set your background colour to white, NOT transparent.
2. Put a white rectangle that covers the whole page on your base layer
underneath your image.

This bug has been fixed in Inkscape v 0.92 but I just found out about it today
after encountering it—again—a few days ago.

Re: [Gimp-user] Netscape question

2017-01-15 Thread Rick Strong

I found it. It's an undocumented feature.

1. Edit > Preferences > Interface > Keyboard shortcuts.
2. Find the menu item you want to add/change the keyboard shortcut for.
3. Under the "Shortcut" column, click on the existing key or key combination
(key+modifier).

4. A blue bar with "New Accelerator ..." will appear.
5. Type your new key or key combo. In a few second the blue bar should
disappear.

6. The new key or key combo should now be visible.
7. Exit the dialogue.
8. The new keyboard shortcut is immediately active.

Be careful what you type because it appears that the only way to erase a
mistake is to push the Reset button. This wipes out all your customized key
codes and returns you to the keyboard shortcut set named at the top of the
dialogue.

Cheers,
Rick S.

First of all note that you're probably referring to Inkscape (see

Inkscape have their own mailing lists and forums, see:

Re: [Gimp-user] Shortcomings of Shortcuts

2017-01-19 Thread Rick Strong
You are right: "... no search bar for looking through the 350 different
help topics?" There is no search function, a major failing in an otherwise
very good help file.

The workaround is to double-click on the drop-down list on the left under
"GNU Image Manipulation Program" where it says "Index". This takes you to a
comprehensive index of the manual. Under the "S" you will find the word
"Shortcuts".

Whether or not it will answer your question I don't know. Best practice is
to tell the list your OS and what version of GIMP you have.

Good luck,

Hello! and please help. My personal created shortcuts are not functioning at

its

just because I have switched languages with Alt + Shift, but when that is in
order I cannot understand why my shortcuts are not working. I feel it must
be

another keyboard shortcut I have pressed to activate a mode where keyboard
shortcuts are not supposed to work because there is a different focus in the
program e.g. if a dialog box was open or something. But I cannot figure it

it seems just that Gimp is moody and that right now it doesn't want to help
me
so i have to go about fiddling with the mouse of tardiness. unnecessary
waste of

time when glorious keyboard shortcuts can help you. For the same reason,
maybe(!), I cannot drag and drop pictures into the working frame. Yes, I
found a
thread which suggest that I should drag and drop into the toolbox, and by
the
sun, it worked. But why then does it work other times. Why the mood. What
button
am I pressing? what am I not doing. Its like trying to use some tools and
then
they don't work and you realize that you haven't "selected all" yet so you
Shift
+a that beautiful beach of a program and it works. Is there, dear community
a
simple fix to my annoyances? And are there no search bar for looking through
the
350 different help topics? Dear admins, I want for my birthday, May 23, a
search
bar so that I can look through all the previous given help. But there might
also

be one and I am a weakling in the force of computer power.

TLDR;(stupid silly writing mood of the author)

Shortcuts missing sometimes.

It's not the "changing of languages" by pressing Alt +Shift

Cannot, there again only sometimes, drag and drop pictures into the working
space. But sometimes I can. Is there a button?

Thank you dear beautiful human being who took the time to help a peasant in
need.

If you don't mind using another (free) program, you should check out

On an A4 sheet, depending on your margins, you can actually put three 6" x

Back again...just looked at the CMYK version in both the Firefox pdf
and Adobe Reader viewers.

The image shows all the design elements in the Firefox viewer, but
loses one of the gold accent symbols and the accent line in the Adobe
viewer.

Is it just my computer, or do you get the same view?

(two versions attached).

First the missing embellishment in Adobe reader. I use a linux operating
system

and do not use Adobe reader so that pdf displays ok here. The CMYK pdf came
straight from your RGB pdf via an application called ghostscript so maybe
some

unexpected effect was incorporated.

For example, the attachment shows your RGB pdf opened in a vector
application

Inkscape. There are no vectors but it is a collection of individual objects,
such as the embellishment. I duplicated it as an example. It does have other
characteristics such as a clipping mask which might come into effect
depending

on PDF viewer.

A note on your PDF. The 'natural' size for that is 6" x 3" not 6' x 3'
probably

originating from your Word document.

Bottom line is, until you get definite information from your printing
company

you are in limbo.

Ask them:

What image formats are acceptable, jpeg, tiff, png, or even PDF?

What ppi(dpi) is required? Remember Gimp is a raster editor so 6'x3' @ 100
ppi =

7200x3600 pix while 6'x3' @ 150 ppi = 10800x5400 pix and so on.

What color mode is required RGB or CMYK?

If they take RGB images then that png from earlier post is probably ok.

If CMYK, then what color profile "something.icc" to use. Gimp uses RGB so
for
CMYK an ancient Gimp plugin is needed and you do not want to go there. Get
some

other application that will perform the conversion.

Re: [Gimp-user] Add frozen object from short exposure frame to long exposure frame

2017-02-25 Thread Rick Strong

If I read you right, you will be time exposing the cave overall.
I'd suggest starting with ISO 200 to keep the noise down and the time
exposure relatively short. Switch "on" long exposure noise reduction if you
have it on your camera.

Then you want a short-duration shot of someone to:
"freeze the person when jumping into the water (in the air mid-jump). "

Is there water in the cave that they will be jumping into? If so, just
expose a hand-held flash during the jump during the long exposure. Set it to
work with your max f-stop, or whatever f-stop you will be using, and at the
distance the jumper will be from the flash.

Otherwise, I guess you will have to photograph the jumper either in a dark
swimming pool or at a lake at night, again using flash and a short duration
speed (1/200/sec, 1/250/sec). You may have front/rear curtain adjustments
that allow you to show motion trails. See your camera manual.

Good luck,
Rick S.

Subject: [Gimp-user] Add frozen object from short exposure frame to long
exposure frame

Hello, I'm not sure if I am posting this on the forum, or if these are
support
messages? If I am not posting this in the correct area, please feel free to
move

this for me, or let me know what area I should post if to...

I am going on a trip to the Yucatan in May and want to take good pictures
inside
some of the Cenotes (sinkoles that expose groundwater underneath). Some of
these
cenotes are underground with not much light (Beams of light from the sun
come
through from the holes at the top of the cave, and some stationary
artificial

lighting is provided from the people who work at these caves as well).

So my plan is to use my Rokinon 12mm f2.0 with my Sony A6000 on a tripod and
set

it to max aperture and long exposure, with maybe ISO of about 400 to 800. Do
those settings sound about right to get some good low-lit cave pictures?
Would
there be any reason to lower the aperture? Keep in mind, I do not plan on
going
any further and setting up external light sources, etc. The cave should be
lit

enough to be able to grab a decent picture with long exposure.

Anyway, the more important question or concern I have comes into play when I
want to get some action shots or get a person into that long exposure photo,
i.e. freeze the person when jumping into the water (in the air mid-jump). I
think the only way to do that is with a computer program using layers or
masks,
correct? I don’t want to purchase anything, and I think this can be
accomplished

with GIMP on my Macbook pro.

Last night, I tried masking myself out of a picture (or whatever the term
is),
but it was very hard to do in terms of being precise. I tried to fiddle
around
with the lasso and the different detections (color/shape/contrast), to no
avail.
Maybe part of that was because I was on a small laptop without using a
mouse.
But I think most of it was because I am an extreme beginner and this is my
first

time playing around with phot editing tools.

Can someone please point me to some detailed Gimp tutorial videos either
showing

how to accomplish exactly what I want from start to finish (Add the frozen
person from the short exposure frame to the long exposure frame), or if you
don’t know of a video that explains all of that, then maybe some tutorials
on

something similar, like how to precisely mask out people.

Re: [Gimp-user] "winterizing" maps

2017-02-25 Thread Rick Strong
- For a start, your plants and trees would have no foliage. They would be
sticks.

- Roofs would have snow on them as would your whole background.
- You would only see buildings defined largely because of the shadows they
cast.
- Roads would be defined by ploughed snow banks. The surfaces would be white
unless salted and ploughed.

Hi,
this is probably more a generic graphics question than specific to GIMP but
does
anyone know any good links to tutorials, or have any experience of taking
top
down graphical maps (stylised) and changing them from a "summer" palette to
a
winter one. I've tried just changing the HSB to get a grey blue overall look
but
it looks a bit over the top, I'd like to do something a bit more
sophisticated

perhaps altering different features of the maps in different ways

Re: [Gimp-user] Text Characters

2017-03-03 Thread Rick Strong

This works for me:
1. Enter your text
2. Layer-> Text to Path
3. Edit-> Stroke path (You need to choose a different colour from the text
color. If you want a black outline, make the text red, or some other colour
and stroke it with black.)

4. Edit-> Select by Color. (Select the red "insides".)
5. Ctrl + x (or delete) to delete the colour of your text (Delete the red
"insides") and leave just the black outline.

At what step do you get hung up?

I am looking for the way to take text that I have created that has a solid
color, make an outline around the edges of each character, and make the
center of each character transparent so it the attributes of the layer
below it will show through the transparent area. I tried to work with the
instructions I was given to do this (see below) but either I cannot

who have helped me, I thank you and I need a bit more to understand how
this is to be done.

Have a great weekend!

Much better IMHO to avoid the post-stroke deletion by stroking the text
outline on a new layer...

In addition select-by-color does a "binary" selection so the pixels on the
edge are either completely removed
(jagged line) or left (faint colored rim).

Re: [Gimp-user] Cleaning up a Blueprint

2017-03-12 Thread Rick Strong
This is not meant to be nasty but since this appears to be a layered image,
I would ask the architect, or the college, for the original floor plan sans
mechanical ductwork. The maintenance dept. of the college no doubt has such
a plan or an "as-built" if there have been modifications. You, or someone,
could then have that scanned and digitized.

Hello all,
I'm new to photo editing, especially gimp so I was hoping to get some help
with this. My new job would require me to scrub images like this down on a
somewhat regular basis (down to bare floor plan), what would be the best way
to
go about it? Basically I just need to delete all of the black, but when I
try to
the edges stay gray (Inherent to BMP's I'd guess). Also when I select just
the

black, after I delete it the selectors stay visible. Any help would be
appreciated and I apologize for my ignorance. Thanks. PS, if there Isn't
enough

resolution in the picture I could host one else where.

thre are two - GIMP cna use both scheme or Python - and the calls
can't get much simpler -
they just require information.

Since both are full featured langauges that allow you to define
functions, you can inside your script,
define a function that will render the required text on a given layer,
position it at a fixed porportional heihgt, and center it on the image
using nothing but simple arithmetic and GIMP provided API.

(And also, load several images from a folder, open a text file, and
match the text to the image based on name, or whatever you want to
do).

they are built in to GIMP
filters->Python->console
filters->script-fu->console;

Use the "browse" button at the bottom of either dialog to browse the
available programmatic
calls.

Seach for samples installed either on your computer, along with GIMP
(ex. .py files in your
GIMP plug-ins folder) or on the internet to have plug-in examples.

To play along on the console, in Python you have to get a reference to
the active image -
type:
img = gimp.image_list()[0]

(actually this is a reference to the most recently open image)
