You do not need to fill anything. You have done everything right.

Your Gimp xcf file keeps everything separate in layers.

Just export that as a png file for a flattened image with transparency.

If you want a jpeg file with a white background, set the Gimp BG colour in the
tools dock to white.

Then export the image as a jpeg.

This might / might-not help. A minute and a half video demo of the above

[Gimp-user] Background Layer Color

2020-04-16 Thread Maestro
I just created a graphic, and made the background transparent...or so I thought.
But, when I export this as a .jpg file, the background is some kind of maroon or
brick color. I cannot figure out how I did that, and it's something I certainly
don't want. How do I fix it? Many thanks!

The jpeg format does not support transparency. Export your image as a png.

Why the maroon colour? When you export to a jpeg any transparency is replaced
by the Gimp current BackGround value (BG) Usually the user will set that as
white, but can be some other colour.

see the screenshot:

How to fix it. Start again. Always Save as a Gimp xcf until a final export to
png/jpg/tiff etc.

Kim,
After you have made your selection, try hitting "Enter" to make your

Then Invert the selection.
Then delete it.

Hello, everyone. I followed the Gimp video tutorial for background removal.
Everything seemed to go as directed until it came time to delete that

Unfortunately your screenshots do not provide much in the way of information.

Make a full interface shot like the attached (Gimp 2.8) and give the version of
Gimp (2.8 or 2.10 ) together with your computer operating system (Windows /
linux / OSX)

The only thing you can say is your selection could be better. Apart from that,
the procedure might be

1. Make sure the image has an alpha-channel (for transparency) Layer ->
Transparency -> Add alpha channel

2. Make a selection around the bit you want to keep. Various tools for this
free-select / scissors / foreground select. Fuzzy/Colour select best on plain
backgrounds. All depends on the image.

3. Invert the selected foreground Select -> Invert

4. Cut the selection Edit -> Cut

5. Select -> None

You do not need more than one layer, except often a light grey under shows up
any edge errors. Save as a .xcf keeps layers / selections etc. Export as a png
for a flattened image with transparency.

Out of interest, which video tutorial? There are other ways of extracting a
foreground, the Gimp plugin g'mic has a useful filter.

Thank you very much for the help. The image was given to me by a friend. It was
pulled from a search engine. Re-scanning was not an option. I'm not exactly what

Looks like a scan, if possible rescan with a dark card background rather than
the scanner white cover.

You probably found that the usual fuzzy / color select does not work too well,
neither does making a mask using threshold.

Back to bad-old-ways using the image in indexed mode. Does not work with all
images but will with your map.

Re: [Gimp-user] Background Help

2017-11-05 Thread Rick Strong
Maybe I missed something. If the Word doc had blue type on white paper to
begin with, why doesn't the resulting PDF have white paper as its
background? And if the original Word doc had blue text on a coloured
background, would it not be easier to copy the text, open a new Word doc
with white background and copy the text on to it, then make a new PDF (or
whatever file is needed) to print your file on a T shirt?

Or simply copy your blue text (or make the text blue), put it on a white
page in GIMP and export to a jpeg (or whatever file is needed) to print your
file?

The only advice you really need is changing the pixels-per-inch (ppi) setting
when opening the PDF in Gimp.

File -> Open and select the PDF file. You get a dialog as the screenshot. Change
the resolution from 100 ppi (Gimp default value) to 300 ppi (suitable for
printing)

One thing to note. The PDF will be rasterized and text converted to an image.
Otherwise the image will look exactly the same as the PDF and print the same as
the original doc paper size.

straightforward. Yet now I encounter an obstacle which I can't seem to pass,
it's probably very easy to fix but I just don't see it.

was white) transparant in GIMP and saved the file. Second I putted the logo in

because the blue header background colour is lighter at the place of the logo.

I hope you guys understand my question, to make it more clear see the attachment

any help/tips would be higly appreciated !

Hi Robert,

you can easily manipulate transparency values in different color adjustement
tools. One could be Colors / Curves. Be sure to check the Alpha channel where
you can handle all the (semi)transparent pixels. Then move the bottom point a
little to the right, in the background you'll see that the slightly gray pixels
will vanish and the background will shine through completely. See tge attached
file for more clarification.

 Hi

I am trying to remove the background of an image I have scanned of a
 Newspaper.
The paper was thin and the back side of the paper is visible on the image.
Is there an easy way to remove this?

The reverse image is also visible over the main image I am looking at (the
image is a News Headline, not a Picture.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 All the best

If you can, scan again, and put *black* paper on top of the other side
 while scanning.

That *and* pick a black point when scanning. It will make the text that
does bleed thru appear much lighter.

Then play with the contrast of the product.

[Gimp-user] Background textures

2012-03-27 Thread foggycreek
I have bought and downloaded some background textures.
My problem is that I can not figure out where to put them once I unzip the file.
I want to use them in Gimp 2.6, but where do I copy and paste them to.
Once this is accomplished, how do I open them in Gimp?
This is probably very basic, but I am new at this stuff and need help PLEASE.
Thank you very much! :)

You could also mention what file format they are in and what system
you use (Linux, Win, Mac).

If they are PNG or PAT, you can just drop them to your local folder
for patterns. You can see where it is for yourself, use
Edit/Preferences/Folders/Patterns menu path.

I use Windows Vista.
They are jpeg images.
Okay, so I just put them in their own file, like I have my Pctures in?
And then just grab one from there when I want one?

You have to open a terminal window, go to the the directory you
expanded files to and enter this:

sudo mv *pat /usr/share/gimp/2.0/patterns

It will ask for you super password, the one you used to install Linux.
It will then move all files with the extension pat to the patterns
directly.

You can also turn your own images into patterns. Just open them with
gimp, and resave them as .pat files. It will ask for a name which will
show up when you look for your patterns, making it easy to find them.

Hope this is clear enough. :-)

On your Window VIsta? Good luck :)

Actually, I've just tried adding JPEG files to patterns folder,
refreshed the list without restarting GIMP and it worked.

Only problem may be the pattern image size i believe max accepted is
around 500x500

The size limit is only for clipboard patterns. You can be as large as you
want for file based patterns.
