Re: [Gimp-user] Book of GIMP

2015-05-14 Thread Steve Lett
I would like to offer my apologies to Oliver. I was a little hasty in my
comments on "how to draw lines." It is in the index under Drawing, with
paths. But that did not appear immediately obvious because I was looking
for "lines." It appears I WAS mistaken!

And a little explanation about my other comment, "That's a hell of a
price..." I actually paid $73.90 australian money and for me that is a big
outlay. I am on a pension with a disability.

But on a positive note. I really am pleased with the book and I appreciate
very much the work that went into its making! Even if I have minor things I
would have written differently.

Re: [Gimp-user] Book of GIMP

2015-05-14 Thread Olivier
You're perfectly right about the meaning of the name, and I'm sorry for my
absentmindedness. Which does not change the fact that image drawing is not
the most fundamental usage of GIMP, and that the author of the initial
message did not look seriously in the book.

Nah...that actually would be "GIPP"- a fearsome darkside arch-rival coordinated
by Wilbur, the Dark Coyote.
Here we deal with the GNU Image MANIPULATION Software, and Wilber the GIMP
is the one featured in our splashes.

Sorry to make a second answer to this message: do you really think that
$49.95 ($32.93 on Amazon) is such a "hell of a price" for a book of 674
pages in full color, who gave work to two authors for three years? When you
filled the tank of your car the last time, how much did you pay?

We can discuss for some time about what should be present in the basics.
Since GIMP is the GNU Image Processing Program, image processing is
probably more basic than image drawing. Anyway, probably you did not search
for a long time, since on page 87, Figure 3.125 is named "Drawing a
straight line". A subsection of the same title begins on page 85.

2015-05-13 Thread Pat David
There is a straight line tutorial on the tutorials section of the website (
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials):

http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Straight_Line/

GIMP Quickies _has_ been updated on the tutorial section as well (
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/GIMP_Quickies/).

A basic photo enhancement tutorial is in the pipeline when I find some
time. :)

Maybe yes and no? I have seen the Book Of GIMP and it looked like
advanced material only. Obviously a chapter on "bare bones basics"
would not have been out of place...

Try here though:

The online GIMP manual has a Common Tasks section that does include
drawing straight lines:

http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-tutorial-quickies.html

An introduction to image file formats and their uses might also be
useful. Note that the GIMP "saves" files to its own native XCF
format, and "exports" images to numerous other formats for purposes
like web display, printing, etc.

http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-images-out.html#gimp-using-fileformats-export-dialog

This tutorial on basic photo enhancement is one of the best, now its
only home is the Wayback Machine:

http://web.archive.org/web/20100714014911/http://world.std.com/~mmcirvin/gimp_tutorial

After working through these materials, the Book Of GIMP may prove a
lot more useful.

:o)
