Regarding VueScan, I have used the free version, and quickly paid for
the pro version. It is worth every single penny. The owner has quickly
and very helpfully responded to my technical questions which dealt with
scanning issues, not product issues. I am just a user and have no
relationship with the product or owner. However, I could not imagine
using any other product and would have been happy to pay much more for it.

An additional benefit, other than dozens of other useful features, of
VueScan: If you want to create a calibration for your scanner(s) [using
a color target you have to obtain elsewhere], you can load that
calibration from within VueScan. It really helps deal with the color
problems caused by some scanners, or just some problems caused by
scanners as their electronics age.

And yes, it can deal with slide scanners, etc., etc., etc. Their
scanner list is in the hundreds of models.

Right now you can only scan 8-bit per channel images with the xsane
gimp plugin, although the standalone xsane is fine.

Is there anything for Linux systems that competes with XSane? the other
scanning programs I've seen are very limited - e.g. can't select a page
area (whole page only) or can't choose bit depth, or can't tell the
scanner to focus on the glass or the film holder, or to use the
document feeder, or don't have a "batch' feature where you choose
several areas on the page to be scanned when you press the button on
the scanner (or the Ok button in the interface).

The xsane gimp plugin is often packaged separately from XSane and
separately from GIMP.

even compatible with GIMP 2.8. API changes in 2.8.x and 2.9.x may be
not very forgiving to software that isn't actively maintained.

Besides, v0.999 only supports LittleCMS 1.x which is becoming

you try VueScan and see if that helps you? You can download a fully

Note that my installer installs 32-bit TWAIN plug-in by default even when
64-bit version of GIMP is being installed (because 64-bit TWAIN drivers are
rare).

Re: [Gimp-user] scanner

2013-09-21 Thread Partha Bagchi
Windows will look for DLLs in the following way - location of the calling
program, Windows Systems folder and then the PATH environment variable.

If Gimp is in your PATH variable, copying the DLL to your Gimp bin folder
should resolve this.

Of course, as Michael pointed out, you cannot call 32-bit DLLs from a
64-bit program.

Have you reinstalled whatever software owns this DLL (likely a Nikon
provided software?)? Because this is not GIMP which installs it (at
least there is no such file for me), so reinstalling GIMP is not
likely to fix anything if your system can't find it.

Also I am not a usual Windows user, but if I understood the system
logics, DLLs are also found with the PATH environment variable.
Therefore you could try to check if windows\twain.32\nikon\nikon scan
3.0 is in your PATH, and if not, add it. That may fix your issue.

I use the Epson Expressionist 1 XL for www.fromoldbooks.org - it's a
large-format scanner that I've heard described as "museum quality". It
included a calibration target and (proprietary Windows-based) software
to use it. I've had it for about 7 years, but they are still sold I
think.

It all depends what you mean by "good", really, and your budget.

I would not dream of doing the scanning work we do without VueScan.

I also found it extremely useful for our particular scanning work to
calibrate the scanners, using a 'target', which I obtained from a source

VueScan does support use of the generated calibration file that is

Yes it is the Partha's installer.
With your installer it works properly.

The only thing which is not working with your installer is the help.
The installation is ok and Gimp find the Help installed but when you launch
it , you got on the left hand side the summary but on the right hand side
the sentence in French "Erreur  l'ouverture du fichier  : invalid
argument" which can be translated as follows :

"Error at the opening of the  file : invalid argument"
means "Â" [Capital A circumflex] or "00C2" (unicode) for a French
speaking machine
