[Goanet] Lamenting the Dusk, Eclipsing twiligh ts — and Gaussian geometries
Here is the first paragraph(working) of Lamenting the Dusk, Eclipsing twilights — and Gaussian geometries, an essay in progress. This night in the late seventies exemplified the blackness of Sumi, its wide spectrum which incloud’s a deafening depth through a range of luscious gradation — sumi no notan. An analogy, a metaphor gifted by my journey having led me to study Shodo and Boku-ga. It was in Batim, the birthplace of my mother. The night howled a storm, spraying its gaussian distribution of electricity in streaks of lighting, which appeared to stand still above as if this spectacular was meant only for this quiet village. The palm trees were fleetingly projecting shadows that shivered and changed shapes, intermingling forms and presenting fresher frights. Perhaps if one were to make ink out of the soot of burnt palm tress—would it be as dark as the Japanese and Chinese made sumi? The blacks appeared blacker than the Cardinal India Ink, which had introduced to me the concept of richness—far distant from any analogy to wealth. This was richness of tone: in depth, in texture, coalescing into phantasmal umbras, conjured by sudden flashes into the darkness. I must add that I am enjoying attempting to write such essays related to art and its effect on me. venantius j pinto
[Goanet] Group of Seven
Babush Co denies truck with Congress rebels, stands by Kamat Text Size: | Topics: Congress group of seven PANAJI: With the ‘group of seven’ declaring on Thursday that they had no problems with the chief minister and that they were only seeking Twitter Facebook Share Email Print Save Comment “administrative reforms”, only the Congress dissidents were left demanding Digambar Kamat’s ouster. With only four MLAs—Pandurang Madkaikar, Pratap Gauns, Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco and Dayanand Narvekar— turning up for a meeting at Mapusa on Thursday, the dissidents had to put off their conclave once again. They will now meet on Saturday. They had earlier postponed their meeting from Wednesday to Thursday to enable more MLAs to attend. Congress president Subash Shirodkar, who returned from Delhi with Kamat on Thursday evening, clearly indicated that there would be no change in leadership. Although unacknowledged, the Congress high command is learnt to have played a major role in quelling the rebellion by sending a stern message to both sets of rebels. When contacted in Delhi, AICC general secretary in charge of Goa B K Hariprasad refused to acknowledge the crisis. “No reports have come. No MLA has spoken to us. We cannot comment on media reports. No, we are not sending any emissary to Goa,” he said. But despite this, Madkaikar said, “We still demand a change in leadership and have postponed our meeting to Saturday to enable more Congress MLAs to attend.” On the other hand, two prominent ‘G-7’ leaders—education minister Atanasio Monserrate and transport minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar—said they had never demanded a leadership change and that they fully backed the Kamat government. They claimed they only wanted administrative reforms. The group of seven comprises NCP MLAs Jose Philip D’Souza, Francisco Pacheco and Nilkanth Harlankar; MGP MLAs Ramkrishna and Deepak Dhavalikar besides Monserrate and Vishwajit Rane. Amid reports of the CBI filing its chargesheet against him in the Panaji police station attack case, Monserrate told TOI, “We have no right to demand a leadership change in the Congress. Our problem is the administration. Things are going slow, files are stuck. Sometimes, even when the finance minister clears our files, they get stuck with the joint secretary of finance. We have no issue with the CM, only with the finances.” The group’s reconciliatory stance was first announced by Dhavalikar to TOI in his chamber at the secretariat earlier in the day. “It was just a coincidence that the seven of us met at my bungalow at Altinho on Tuesday. We only discussed about streamlining the administration. We never demanded a change in the leadership or anything else.” _ Windows Live Hotmail: Your friends can get your Facebook updates, right from Hotmail®. http://www.microsoft.com/middleeast/windows/windowslive/see-it-in-action/social-network-basics.aspx?ocid=PID23461::T:WLMTAGL:ON:WL:en-xm:SI_SB_4:092009

[Goanet] AISI : Bishop’s letter/message (re f. Colva CD Controversy) - I
AISI : Bishop’s letter/message (ref. Colva CD Controversy) - I It seems the message came out 12 days after the hated Colva Violence. Also seems, it needed a careful study and observations besides many hands to put it together and hence the delay. THE PARISH PRIEST OF COLVA, FR. DIOGO FERNANDES HAD TO SUFFER A GREAT DEAL BECAUSE OF THE CD TITLED ‘DOGUI BODMAS’, WE EXTEND TO HIM OUR HEARTFELTH SOLIDARITY. WE COMMEND HIS SELF-RESTRAINT AND HIS APPEAL TO HIS PARISHIONERS TO EXERCISE THE SAME, EVEN IN THE FACE OF DEFAMATION HE WAS BEING SUBJECTED TO. HE THUS BORE WITNESS TO FINE HUMAN AND CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES. Going by this, it appears that the priest is given a clean chit by the church freeing him from any allegations against him. It’s like a protection (?) from one best friend to another best friend. The CD does sing about the two friends were shool/class mates Sharing the same bench. May be the priest is innocent. The allegation about the pealing of the church bell and inciting or instigating the Parishioners to march to the CD producers house etc need to be properly investigate without malice towards none. Whatever it is, the Colva incidence of violence, by and large, termed as ‘inhuman and unchristian’. WE ALSO APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT THE PARISHIONERS OF COLVA EXTENDTED TO THEIR SHEPERD. IN THIS THEY REVEALED HOW HIGHLY THEY VALUE THEIR FAITH, THEIR SHEPHERD AND THEIR RELIGIOUS STANDARDS. ALSO TO BE UNDERSCORED ARE THE EFFORTS THEY PUT IN TO SEE THAT SUCH ATTEMPTS ARE NOT REPEATED. THIS IS THE TESTING TIME FOR THEIR FATIH AND WE WOULD LIKE TO STANDBY THEM IN THIS HOUR OF PAIN AND TRIAL. I find this whole thing contradictory with reference the contents under ‘A WORD ABOUT THE VIOLENCE…” of the same message in the next para (see the original/link) It’s like saying ‘well done people, and we stand by you’ on one hand and ‘you should not have done it that way’ on the other hand. It also sound like it is encouraging people (including other Parishioners etc) to act likewise (as Colva people did) so that no such attempts are repeated (to defame their shepherds -Priests). Also, when it says ‘..DEFENDING THEM (sheperds etc) AGAINST UNWARRANTED ATTACKS IS PERFECTLY LEGITIMATE (?) II A WORD ABOUT THE VIOLENCE THAT ERRUPTED ON THE OCCASION As said, it is like saying ‘Don’t worry about what it says here, it is just to please certain section of the society and we say it not because we wanted to but due to some pressures which we also have to address to while handling such sensitive situations. III A WORD TO ARTISTES ON THE OTHER HAND, WE ARE HUMAN: PRIESTS, MINISTERS, EVERYONE. WE ARE BOUND TO FAIL SOMETIME OR THE OTHER.. I was wondering when it says ‘everyone’ (abv) it also includes the CD producer and the artistes? Also, it is perfectly OK to sing or write or highlight the faults of Ministers ? If no, then why no one said anything about it before. LET US IN OUR PARISHES AND FAMILIES INTENSIFY OUR PRAYERS THAT ALL THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED IN THESE DISTURBANCES PARTICULARLY THE COLVA PARISH PRIEST MAY EXPERIENCE OUR SUPPORT AND SOLIDARITY IN FAITH I would also add or amend thus …those who have suffered in these disturbances particularly elderly parents of the CD producer and his 4 year old son etc who were in the house at the time of rampage .. When our sheperds do what they not supposed to do, They not only place their own reputation in danger but our religion too. When priests do what they not supposed to do, then it must also be objected and condemned by all. [Goanet] Colva CD Controversy etc - My Take - II
Colva CD Controversy etc - My Take - II It appears the whole thing (Church Letter) gives a clear message thus: ‘any attempts made to defame the shepherds be it thru songs, writing, drawing etc it will be firmly dealt with as in Colva case’ So far, being this side of Goa, found no hard evidence against the Colva Priest apart from reading various posts/ new allegations including pvt mails in the internet forums etc . (except, the priest got transferred from Cutorim for some reasons) The CD producer if found wrong or CD is defamatory should be punished as per the law. On the other hand, what it says about the priest such as allegation having a mistress, amassing wealth etc should be thoroughly Investigated by an independent body not by the church or from Colva as we already have their verdict at hand. It is wrong to say ‘all priests are bad’. Similarly, it is also wrong to say ‘all priest are good’ We all know there are some bad apples in the church basket. It’s time now to identify such rotten apples and throw them out of the basket before it affects the other good apples particularly the fresh ones. We as parishioners, can’t deny the fact that not is all well with some of our shepherds, we know it yet we choose to remain silent simply because no one said anything against them for ages or due to fear of excommunication etc Let me give you a factual example from one of my neighbouring parishes. A section of the parishioners there do not attend the church despite being the church is very near to where they live (including top or well know villagers). And why they do that? No, they did not join any religious sect, (they are still clinging on to the Catholic faith) but what they say is there are not happy with their shepherd’s unacceptable behaviour or activities such as amassing wealth, lending money, owning cars, flats, socializing with the youth including late night drinking, involving with politicians, woman company etc. For Sunday mass etc they go to the other church which is far away from their houses. If church if reading, hope it takes suo-motu cognizance of this post if it has received at least one complaint from such dissatisfied or protesting parishioners. Today, they may be just 10 unhappy parishioners, it could be 100 tomorrow. Are we waiting until such time? Who will be responsible for such division? Merely, they are our shepherds or may be they are helping us with free drinks, lending money, some favours from politicians etc etc are we going to ‘shut up’ despite knowing what goes around? Or are we waiting till another CD comes out from this part of Goa? (Readers should not take it as if I am targeting one particular parish) Elsehwere, in the forums, I have compared ‘ Church ministry with that of Digu’s Ministry which is based on ‘Samjota’ or agreements or threats?’ It seems, it consists of some disgruntled elements (or bad apples) within. Or is it because there are some who do not believe in the head of the Goa church? I will not elaborate much on this. Instead, I would quote some of my past posting with pictures or news paper cuttings. You may be rememeber some 2 years back the then spokesperson of the Church CSJP (Council for social Justice and Peace) clearly said ‘Politics and Mass can’t be mixed’ Also “Priest cannot campaign for elections as it divides the flock...” Despite the above church directives, some priests (or rather disgruntled elements) Kept on doing by disobeying the church.? The type of behaviour, is it not objectionable and condemnable? If so, what action taken so far? Anyone? Can we really blame the CD producers, if anyone takes on this? Here are some of the clippings: Politics and Mass can’t be mixed say Fr. Marverick Fernandes Executive Secretary of CSJP It says “Priest cannot campaign for elections as it divides the flock...” http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk6/513003994/sizes/l/ see the disgruntle elements within the church http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/message/2258 or http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk6/503263601/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk6/503263625/sizes/l/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk6/503263597/sizes/l/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk6/503230994/sizes/l/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk6/503230988/ A word about me: I have nothing against the priests. In fact, I do have some of my regulars whom I give my hard earned money only to help with the sick particularly those suffering from cancer and AIDS. I am a not only Catholic but was a catechist too. I have been there, I have seen around and now the experience speaks. As said, all I am trying to do to help identifying the bad apples from the good ones. I don’t think it is wrong to do that. I don’t make up things. The thing I said about the Macazana Priest, everything was proved to be true. Even the case was eventually thrown out as suspected. Let’s be a happy catholic

Dear Damanenses and lovers of Daman (Damao), Get set to launch the 3rd World Daman Day (20/8/10) on the 2nd of February, the day Damao came to be - 2nd February 1559! In Daman itself, there’ll be the annual mass at the DMC to celebrate the feast of Nossa Senhora das Candeias. The next event in the WDD-10 calendar is the carnival (carnaval) which coincides with Valentine’s this year!;) The various youth groups are planning fancy dress/costume competitions followed by floats and finally a ball on ‘Domingo Gordo,’ Sunday the 14th. I’ll be covering all events with my Nikon and trust you’ll do the same too in your little corner of the world so that we can have a digital backup of our culture in cyberspace! And last but most important, the theme this year is about our language - the Portuguese spoken in Daman, our mother tongue. In this connection, you’ll be happy to know that I received a positive response (vide two letters) from the ambassador of Portugal in India (Delhi) to my request for starting Portuguese language classes in Daman. Viva Damao! Eu Falo Portuguese! Here's an email from Gregg Carvalho with details of the Goan Cultural Society's 10th Anniversary celebrations! Well done to the GCS for keeping Goans entertained for 10 years! Now, I've got a request! Who can translate the title of the Konkani Tiatr, 'Vistidachi-Sun'? I don't want to hear from any of the organisers or the actors!- only from the Goan public! As a clue, I think ‘Sun’ means daughter-in-law. Do get in touch with the Organisers for tickets for all the planned events. 2. Please note that it’s also the 10th World Goa Day Anniversary this year. The Pilgrimage-Picnic to Aylesford is on Bank Holiday Monday 30th of August. Please note the date in your diaries! We are looking to have an earlier start this year so we have more ‘picnic time’ in the afternoon. Also we thought if we brought forward the rosary and benediction to the morning, we can have an uninterrupted picnic in the afternoon. If Aylesford are in agreement, we hope to have the Rosary at 10am, followed by Mass at 10.30am and Benediction at 11.30 am. We are also looking to showcase Goan talent through singing, playing an instrument or performing a comedy sketch! Plenty of time for practice between now and the end of August! More details to follow in the months ahead. We hope to have more coaches available this year in different areas in and around London . Do get in touch if you would like to organize a coach in your area. Thanks. 3. Finally and by no means the least, please also see the other email below about Fr Agnelo’s commemoration mass on Sun 24th Jan at John Fisher Church, Wimbledon at 2pm. A large group of Goans have been working hard for a number of years to have Fr Agnelo beatified and canonized a Saint. Hopefully, with our prayers and support, it may accelerate the process. Do support as many of the Goan events as possible. No doubt as the Summer approaches events will start to clash and we will be increasingly spoilt for choice. Please forward this email to friends and relatives so they don’t miss out on these opportunities! [Goanet] Colva CD Controversy etc - My Take - II
Joe makes an excellent point. The Colva controversy needs to be investigated thoroughly and from what I have gathered the Head of the Church in Goem has to be UNEQUIVOCAL in his condemnation of ANY violence, irrespective of the cause. The Church in Goem has to urgently set up a body populated by eminent Catholics and not just priests, to monitor, oversee and investigate any allegations of any immorality or illegality within the church and amongst its shepherds. Cover-ups will only be detrimental. The huge scandals in the West which have blown up in our faces and severely damaged the Church should act as a desperate wake up call. My exhortation to Catholic Goemcars is not to lose heart. Christians are but human. We make mistakes. We fail. We can be bad. We very often do not live up to the teachings of our Messiah. But we have our faith. We have our beliefs. We know that GOD is merciful. Let us ask for forgiveness and in turn forgive. This is the crux of our faith. The is the reason of our being. Sincerely Xanno Moidecar

[Goanet] A clarification
Dear all, A couple of recent emails on Goanet have credited me personally with doing something for Goa. I want to state clearly that Goa Sudharop is a result of the efforts of literally thousands of Goans from five continents over the last 10 years (this is our 10 year anniversary). I deserve and take no credit (zero percent), all credit belongs to all the donors, supporters, well-wishers, volunteers, the Board, management, and representatives over the years who are the real names and faces of Goa Sudharop. I am not writing this due to humility or modesty but the reality is that the total is the sum of the thousands' parts, a diasporic endeavor between resident and non-resident Goans in a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect, all for the motherland they love so dearly. On a personal note, I would to publicly thank Ibonio, our Goa Sudharop Director in Goa, who makes everything happen, all on a volunteer basis. Thank you. George Pinto

Whilst I do not subscribe to RPs bombastic language and diatribes,I agree with Arwin Mesquita. Another person like that is Soter. We need all the help we can get and getting together is only a beginning.Staying together is crucial. I myself am so frustrated with our government, that I feel like doing violence and eliminating not only three famous idiots, but all of them! However Venita Coelho has suggested civilised and democratic means, and whether it will work with uncivilised and undemocratic shelfish people is the moot question that Rajan and Soter are battling with. Everyone has thei own life to live.Everyone makes mistakes.Time is running out.Irreversible damage is being done.Right now the politicians and vested interests are getting restless with the grass roots movements and agitations building up.Please let us all try to help each other within our limitations and whatever way we choose to without belitting each other. JoeGoaUk wrote: We as parishioners, can’t deny the fact that not is all well with some of our shepherds, we know it yet we choose to remain silent simply because no one said anything against them for ages or due to fear of excommunication etc First of all, let me congratulate you for attempting to tackle a thorny subject. For some reason, Catholics, all over the world, are hesitant to expose their priests that have gone astray. When these 'strayers' are pointed out, the Catholic church drags its feet rather than clean its house. In the west, thankfully, the courts are not afraid to try the 'religious' that break civic laws. I grew up in a Catholic church in Africa that did a lot of good work. I still think that 95% of the Catholic priests/nuns are intent on providing for those in need. However, there are people who are abusing their 'religious' power. This abuse will only get worse as the abusers are now finding out that even when they are caught/exposed, it is extremely rare for any religious organization to take the appropriate action. As for your comment on ex-communication, I guess it's still a potent force in Goa. In my opinion, any religious organization that has to use fear to keep its members in place is in trouble. Once again, there are only a few 'rogue elements' in the church and yet for some unfathomable reason, the Catholic church refuses to cleanse itself. Personally, I think that anyone who has understood the message of Christ need not go to church every Sunday. If s/he he is true a follower of Christ, the person would have learnt to live and behave like Christ. My disappointment on the Colva situation is that the church bells were rung to call the 'faithful' to action. And the action was for the 'faithful' to go and stone someones house. This seems to be of no concern to the head of the Catholic church in Goa. Mervyn Lobo PS. Before anyone starts speculating, I am Catholic. The only time the Catholic church has disappointed me before was when they refused to baptize my child because her mother is non-Catholic. The irony of the situation was that for the previous 30 years, I had contributed generously for the missions that were converting people to Catholism. I got around the baptism situation by bringing in my Jesuit uncle from India to baptize the child. __ The new Internet Explorer® 8 - Faster, safer, easier. Optimized for Yahoo! [Goanet] Goa new home for B'bay girls?
Goa police has said that bar girls displaced after a ban on dance bars in Mumbai are making Goa their second home. DGP B S Bassi, briefing media persons on Friday said due to closure of dance bars and Goa's tourism profile, there is influx of these girls in the state. Goa being a tourist destination and due to the closure of dance bars in the neighbouring state of Maharashtra, there is an influx of such elements in the state of Goa, the statement by DGP reads. The statistics provided in the annual review mentions that in the year 2008, the crime branch arrested 10 accused and rescued 12 girls from their custody. In the year 2009, crime branch arrested five accused and six girls were rescued, it adds. _ Keep your friends updated—even when you’re not signed in. http://www.microsoft.com/middleeast/windows/windowslive/see-it-in-action/social-network-basics.aspx?ocid=PID23461::T:WLMTAGL:ON:WL:en-xm:SI_SB_5:092010
[Goanet] Bicholim locals urged to fight against mining transportation
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM, JAN 15 Taking serious note of the mining transportation through Bicholim city, Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar and Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) Chairman Satish Gaonkar have urged the people from Bicholim to support them in their agitation. Addressing a press conference in the city, Bicholim MLA Patnekar said since the last three-four years, the city has been experiencing the problem of mining traffic, which comes from Maharashtra. “Some mines, which were closed down since the last 35 years, have been restarted, as there is a demand for ore in the foreign market, due to which there is an increase in mining trucks plying from Maharastra and Sirsaim through Bicholim,” said Patnekar. It may be recalled that since the last four years, there has been constant agitations in the taluka in protest against the mining transportation. Besides trucks from Sirsaim, trucks proceeding from Maharastra, which enter the State, use the roads in Bicholim. The agitations have been sparked off mostly due to accidents, pollution, overloading of mining trucks and police authorities’ incompetence in keeping a check over mining. The agitations only led the traffic to stop for some time, which would resume after about two to three days. “We are fed up with the issue and want to solve it on urgent basis. Being the representatives of the public, we have to face them and we feel that the issue could be solved only if public support us,” said Patnekar. “Some politicians are involved in mining activities and they always try to cause hindrance to our attempts. I had even raised the issue in the assembly session,” he added. “In view of this, we have convened a meeting in BMC hall on Tuesday at 6.30 pm,” informed Patnekar. He appealed to the PTA members of the schools, parents and all those affected by mining to support the cause. BMC Chairman Satish Gaonkar said the issue could be solved only if they get support from the public. “We urge the people to assemble for the meeting, where the problem faced by them will be discussed and further plan will be chalked out,” said Gaonkar. Later, the delegation met Bicholim PI Harish Madkaikar and explained the problems faced by the public. PI Madkaikar assured that the defaulters involved in overloading mining trucks would be fined to get the situation under control. BMC Councillors Bhagwan Harmalkar, Ajit Birje, Kamlakar Teli and others were present for the meeting.
[Goanet] Crime in the Bahamas
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_989.html And we are complaining about crime in Goa! Incidently, three separate groups of tourists were robbed in Nassau, where our Jose Colaco stays! ;-) samir CRIME: The Bahamas has a high crime rate. New Providence Island in particular has experienced a spike in crime that has adversely affected the traveling public. Pickpocketing and theft remain the most common crimes perpetrated against tourists. However, there has been a spate of more violent criminal activity in 2009. Three separate groups of tourists were held at gunpoint and robbed at popular tourist sites in and near Nassau; each of these incidents occurred during daylight hours and involved groups of more than eight persons. Several other groups of tourists allegedly were victims of armed robbery at more remote locations. The U.S. Embassy has received reports of assaults, including sexual assaults, in diverse areas such as in casinos, outside hotels, or on cruise ships. In several incidents the victim had reportedly been drugged. The Bahamas has the highest incidence of rape in the Caribbean according to a 2007 United Nations report on crime, violence, and development trends. Much of the violent crime occurs outside of areas frequented by tourists, such as the “over-the-hill” section of Nassau. Two American citizens were murdered in Nassau in 2009, both allegedly in residential areas. Home break-ins, theft, and robbery are not confined to any specific part of the island. The upsurge in criminal activity has also led to incidents which, while not directed at tourists, could place innocent bystanders at risk. An altercation at a major resort resulted in the shooting of two security officers, while several daytime robberies in Nassau led to exchanges of gunfire on busy streets. Criminal activity in the outlying family islands does occur, but on a much lesser degree than on New Providence Island. The Embassy has received reports of burglaries and thefts, especially thefts of boats and/or outboard motors on Abaco and Bimini. The Embassy has not received reports of harassment or hate crimes motivated by race, religion, or citizenship. There have been reports of harassment of persons based on sexual orientation. In addition, women have reported incidents of verbal harassment and unwanted attention. Counterfeit and pirated goods are available in The Bahamas. Transactions involving such products may be illegal under Bahamian law, even though those laws are not routinely enforced. In addition, bringing such products into the United States may result in forfeitures and/or fines. Some organized crime activity is believed to occur in The Bahamas, primarily related to the illegal importation and smuggling of illicit drugs or human trafficking. The Bahamas, due to its numerous uninhabited islands and cays, has historically been favored by smugglers and pirates. Most visitors to The Bahamas would not have noticeable interaction with organized crime elements; however, persons who operate their own water craft or air craft should be alert to the possibility of encountering similar vessels operated by smugglers engaged in illicit activities on the open seas or air space in or near The Bahamas. Visitors are advised to report crime to the Royal Bahamas Police Force as quickly as possible. Early reports frequently improve the likelihood of identifying and apprehending suspected perpetrators In general, the Royal Bahamian Police Force is responsive to reports of crime and takes the threat of crime against tourists very seriously. However, the police response is sometimes slowed by a lack of resources or by the physical constraints imposed by geography and infrastructure. Back to Top

Halleluja, I am saved. I am convinced. The pro-west chest thumpers have finally made me see the light of the day. *There is no racial prejudice in the West or Australia* I am convinced.. So have other Goans, Malyasians, Chinese and Vietnamese and other non-white people, resident or non-resident, citizens or non-citizens. There are no WASP-only localities -?the first time I have heard it?mentioned, was by you. Blah blah. [GABRIEL De F] Also read the posts of Mario G in similar vein. But then can someone explain to me why so many Indian students in Australia are being abused and killed, or so many Indian students being killed in good ole U S of A? or the 'dots' group that killed Indians because they wore bindis? Or Canadian children of Goan origin who call their parents PAKIs (I have actually witnessed this) Why is the term PAKI derogatory? Why if you are dark skinned and spout Spanish you are likely to be called a 'SPIC? A lot of Goans could be classified as spics. I could go on and on. Re: [Goanet] From one RG to another an open letter
Dear Samir, Perhaps if you'd read that article properly, you would have noticed it said: The hype in the Indian media over racial attacks on Indian students in Australia would suggest that thousands of Indian students have been victims of such attacks over the past two years. This is not true.. The hype in the Indian media says it all. No boot-licking here - perhaps it is yourself who is doing licking vigorously somewhere and having a very sore tongue by now, perhaps why you think all of us rest are boot-lickers as well. A dispassionate look at the recent attacks on Indian students reveals some distinct patterns that are not exactly racist. First, the attacks have been on students and not on long-term residents working as skilled professionals. ... In addition, there are a sizeable number of people of Indian origin from countries such as Fiji, Malaysia, Kenya and South Africa. ... the attackers were a polyglot mix, reflecting the streets – whites, Asian, Middle Eastern, Aboriginal and Pacific Islander. In one case, the alleged assailant was of Middle Eastern appearance. In another incident, a young offender described as “Aboriginal” committed the attack. ... The Australian police are not far from truth when they describe the attacks as largely motivated by opportunity because Indian students work late at night, live in low-cost and usually crime-prone neighborhoods, and are regarded as soft targets. ... The latter categories of students are actually migrants desirous of working as taxi drivers, carpenters and attendants in shops and hotels. Most do not mix with locals and live in virtual ghettoes, something that does not go well with the local population. ... Why is it that one does not hear of similar incidents involving Chinese students, who number more than 120,000 in the country? I hope the rest of the readers make up their own minds from the above excerpts of the article that Samir pointed out, pointers Salus I had mentioned in past emails. Gabriel. [Goanet] Asia's greatest missionary: Bl. Joseph Vaz - HERALD(Goa), Jan 16, 2010
ASIA'S GREATEST MISSIONARY: BL. JOSEPH VAZ By Valmiki Faleiro The greatest Catholic missionary produced by Asia was a Goan. Blessed Joseph Vaz (April 21, 1651-January 16, 1711, both days, incidentally, Friday), is now Patron of the Goa Archdiocese. He was born in the house of his mother, Maria de Miranda, at Pulvaddo-Benaulim. His father, Cristovam Vaz, was from Sancoale, where Joseph grew up. He was the third child of his parents. Joseph initially studied in Benaulim, then in Sancoale and later in the then capital city, Old Goa. He was ordained in 1674/6. Of deep intellect, he was already a young renowned preacher while still in Goa, with rare honours of being confessor and spiritual guide to Portuguese noblemen and two Governors. He first practiced and then preached. That conviction enabled ready acceptance. He went to Mudippu-Mangalore in 1681 as Vicar Forane, an arduous four-year mission that would earn him the title of 'Apostle of Canara.' Dutch Calvinists, who conquered Ceylon from the Portuguese in 1658, persecuted Catholics and suppressed Catholicism there. With zeal to resuscitate and spread the faith in Ceylon, Joseph joined India's first native religious order, the Oratory of St. Philip Neri founded three years before, in 1685, and became its second Superior. He begged of the founder to resume the post and relieve him for the mission in Ceylon. Two years later, disguised as a porter, to avoid arrest, he landed in the island nation on January 3, 1687 together with Joao, his trusted tribal co-villager from Sancoale, cook and attendant (my brother.) Two other confreres who had set forth with him from Goa turned their backs in Kerala. Clad in a plain loincloth (the Mass kit hidden within), his entry must have been smooth, for he was of local skin colour, not that of a European missionary. The law prohibited locals from sheltering a Catholic priest, under the pain of death for both the provider and the priest. But Joseph was a man who, by his very pious presence, made people feel secure. Braving vicious adversity, initially from the Dutch and later from native Buddhists, he rekindled the faith ... at times (as in Tuticorin and Jaffna) publicly wearing the beads of Rosary around his neck! In 1689, Bishop of Cochin Pedro Pacheco appointed him Vicar-General of Ceylon. He worked heroically - alone - for nine years, in 11 or 12 missions in Ceylon (starting two new missions in Puttalam and Kandy) before being joined by his confreres from Goa. During that lonely decade in an alien land, he must have followed Apostle Paul's advice to Timothy: be careful always to choose the right course, be brave under trials, make preaching your life's work. Choosing the right course, given his intellect, is what Joseph evidently did. He indigenized the Sri Lanka church, about three centuries before Vatican-II thought of the idea, unlike the Portuguese who tried to impose a European modeled church in Goa, the Malabar and in other Asian missions. His Kunnbi (my brother) companion, Joao, was by now sufficiently instructed to be ordained priest. But no bishop of those days would dare ordain a tribal in a caste-driven society. Joseph lived 300 years before his time. He had mastered the Sinhalese and Tamil languages of the island, by himself, working late into the night by an oil lamp during his 3-year imprisonment in Kandy. It is said that both Buddhists and Muslims felt drawn to him. (He compiled a lexicon for future use by his confreres and encouraged its study by his mate from 1705, Fr. Jacome Gonsalves, later doyen of Catholic literature in Ceylon.) In 1707, he organised an unimaginably bold resistance against Dutch domination in western Ceylon. He issued a pastoral letter to Catholics there to assert publicly their right to freedom of conscience and protest Dutch laws that forced their children to attend Calvanist schools and kirk (church.) The Dutch did not yield to the demand, but native Catholics consolidated their identity. When the 'Apostle of Sri Lanka' died there after 24 years of ceaseless work, generally in hiding and often in bad health, the faith was once again firmly rooted and spread in the emerald island-nation. Eminent Jesuit missiologist Pierre Charles called him a perfect model of an Apostle. Bishop Vianney Fernando of Kandy-Ceylon described his apostolate as an unparalleled missionary endeavour in the history of Sri Lanka. The Archbishop- Patriarch of Goa called him an intercessor on our behalf, a son of our race, a product of our culture and ethos, and a model of our way of being Church. The Vatican Postulator James M. Fritzpatrick said Bl. Vaz remains a Goan; he is flesh of your flesh, bone of your bone. Pope John Paul-II described him as a son of Asia who became a missionary in Asia. His name inspired fellow-Goans in their missions. Notable Goan missionaries like Mons. (Dr.) Hipolito da Costa (1866-1912) from Chinchinim followed his example in politely

[Goanet] Why Is The Sealink Project Being Conceived in Haste?
Today's GT Weekender's headlines state that Sealink gets 7 bids. This refers to the project to link Dona Paula and Vasco by a bridge apparently. It seems the bidding process is to be finalised by next week ; the technical report within 6 months; the entire bidding process within 10 months. While I don't think anyone is against better transport facilities in Goa, the haste with which this particular project is being sought to be implemented seems suspicious. When public money is going to be used, the public should be involved in deciding whether or not this idea is the most effective solution to the transport problems in the Vasco area. And we are talking of hundreds if not thousands of crores of rupees. Why is there so little public debate on the matter? Has anyone for instance assessed whether it would or would not be more cost effective to use the money to improve the current road network? Even if a direct link between Vasco and Panjim is needed, would not a modern ferry service have been a better idea? What impact will this project have on the tax payer? And on the environment? Until the issue becomes far more transparent, on the face of it this sea-link stinks. [Goanet] Goans selling land-A myth
Now CM Digambar Kamat calls for introspection among Goans. He blames Goans for selling land, a myth that has been propagated by none other than the star campaigner of GBA. Has anyone questioned why Goans prefer to sell their land? If any Goan decides to keep his land, are there laws to protect that right? Even if there are, what is the time one has to spend in obtaining justice and the economics of defending this right? Are the land acquisition Act and the Mundkar Act behind the cause for panic that compels Goans to sell their land, because a bird in hand is worth two in the bush? Goans may want to do many things even trade their wives and daughters but the laws will not permit. What has stopped the Government from freezing development of hill slopes rather than all those shit rules of 25% gradient and average hill slope and such stuff? What has stopped the Government from keeping very low FAR in the villages to make it non-profitable for real estate developers? Who says that this Digambar and his gang of footsie activists want to save Goa? What unity among activists are guys speaking about when the interests are being traded on the weekends? We Goans are experts at brushing our problems under the carpet, pretending that nothing is happening and thinking that no one else knows anything. 'Denial' is one of the primary symptoms that never allows recovery in addictions. So is it with our Goan society. -Soter

Albert writes:- Sometimes we tend to be hyper emotionals when we get to know about about religious heads. Our top leaders sometimes want to keep quiet for some personal reasons.See the CD case. I do not have the proper background of the case and so I shall not side any side. All the faithfuls who have tilted too much on the priests side did not see any reason. Anger rose to the head and muscles were exposed and so now lets break the house, and what ever there is along the road. That person must be taught a lesson. He will not venture to do it again. In the melee some poor people's house became roofless. What a loss What should be our correct atttitude ? Once after the eight o clock week day mass an announement was made that a priest was murdered by two non goans. After mass every one gathered to find out about the murder and each person was throwing vemon. Later on I heard lots of unwanted things about this priest . Since the matter was in the court I said it is better to wait and see. The murderers were acquited . The judge knew what judgment to give. Lots of letters appeared in the newspaper asking for appeal of the case which never took plan. Thank God the mob did not burn the police station and what ever station they could find on the road. Every religious leadear kept quiet why should I blow my own trumpet ? He is not my father in law nor my parish priest. What are we ? Where do you place your self in society? October month we have collected lot of money for the mission. I do not know where the money has gone but I am sure many lay people will write ens (The clergy will maintain silence as if they have not read) that the our priests are doing very well in Africa in the Mission. They are working in the remote areas and riskying their lives. What about us ? Don't we require the word of God ? If any Roman Catholic enters the camp of new born again christians there will be hue and cry. Why ! just like that. Some ladies will run to the parish priest and cry before him! others will try to meet him or his wife or his mother and pour their woes to them with a long complain, Sometimes the parish priest may warn you-I will not give you the last sacrament and burry you. Re: [Goanet] Blessed Jose Vaz and Padr Agnelo
Date: Fri, 15 Jan 2010 12:33:12 + From: xanno_moide...@yahoo.co.uk To: goa...@goanet.org Subject: [Goanet] Blessed Jose Vaz and Padr Agnelo 500 odd years of Catholicism and not one canonisation. We are stranded with two semi-saints and no light at the end of the tunnel. Why? I have my theories. Here goes: (1) The church in Goem is divided. Caste having been such a huge part of our lives, we have yet to exorcise this ghost. It is time the head of the church in Goem does something dramatic nay drastic to right this wrong. In the Church in Goa is there really a division or a difference of opinion: The one can be vicious...detrimental to the edifice; the other, healthy and constructive. If at all you are hankering after...dramatic...drastic aaction you have ample scope attending the Vidhan Sabha... (2) Goemcars do not have sufficient financial clout to sway the power brokers in Rome. Do they not? You will be surprised how many positions of high- mid-level significance, in the Vatican, are held by Goansand, according to their peers, most successfully executed. (3) There are no Goemcar nuns catering at the Vatican, unlike Kerala. Their nuns I believe literally run the papal household. Keralites are getting canonised in droves. Goodness gracious me...what silly tales have reached you, or, you are fancying? At the time of a canonisation, some years ago, when living accomodation, around the Vatican, was nigh impossible, I family, were put up by Goan nuns, at the convent of San Giuseppe di Aparazione, a stone throw from the Vatican walls, on Via Paulo lll, a grand place in a spacious luscious park. The hosting nun excused herself from personally attending us, being related, because, due to the exigencies of the canonisation she, and her girls, Goan nuns most of them had been given extraordinary duties. I met many others during our week-long stay, all of them variously engaged in the Vatican. I visited two, in our compound, elderly nuns, retired after long service there. There are many (in this case, literally 'droves'), of nuns from Kerala, working there. Runing the the Papal household is quite another kettle of fish. Who has ever, besides perhaps, Dan Brown in his fantasies, toured the said premisses. I, presume, without personal inspection, that the Papal household, like any other palatial or otherwise, would require any number of services: From attending to the Pontiffs personal needs to those of the scullery. Keralites are not, have not been, canonised in droves. There is just one Keralan, Santa Alphonsa, cannonized in 2008. Yes, there have, indeed, been 500 odd years of Catholicism in Goa. But, perhaps, you are overlooking, or ignorant, that Kerala has been Christian, quite an exemplary one despite most caste-astrigent, for the past two millenia plus. Ever hear of Thomas, the Apostle? He, himself, has been credited to have baptized the first Christians, in Karala, with the same hand that he had, at the invitation of his Master, plunged into the speared wound, in Jesus' side. (4) The church in Goem needs a crash course in public relations. Have you attempted to offer your services...do you really feel qualified? If you so desire are unaware how to go about it apply to the excellent Fr. Joaquim Loiola, at the Patriarchal Palace; at best you may receive a, not crash, but indepth, course in'nit from him. (5) Goemcars are evil or maybe just not holy enough. Please, mon, pray speak for yourself... I may be wrong. But then what other reasons can there be? That you, most certainly, are...well off the bend... Mother Theresa. John Paul 2. Great people. I love them. But sainthood in under a decade? The Roman Catholic Church cannot find one, one Goemcar; fit for the greatest honour it can bestow? Sincerely Xanno Moidecar A parting shot: A pseudonym, may be OK in dealing trash, hardly the matter your are, so clumsily, trying to tackle. Mr. Noronha has referred to the out migration as a virus. No such thing. If one discounts wars and upheavals, people emigrate primarily for economic opportunities. The government in Goa has done little to increase job opportunities for Goans in Goa. The politicians can only come up with junk: tourism, resorts, cruises, casinos and the kind. This is not sustainable.
Re: [Goanet] Remote Control
Dear Soter, It appears from your post reproduced below that you are learning to spew venom like Mr. Parrikar does on this forum. The nasty way of writing may be characteristic to Mr Parrikar, and however proud he may be of that, It also is a reflection of his crass mentality and self upbringing. It would be unoriginal as well as image lowering to follow his writing style. I'd also like to ask If you could please also equate me with 'bleading heart' Fredrick in support for the migrant scrap dealers. The street scrap dealers no doubt, do business on public space, but in turn they do a lot of service to the state. First, they pick up waste from householders and shopkeepers at their doorstep at NO fee. Some even pay the stores for the things they take. They considerably reduce the civic authorities waste collection quantum which would otherwise go into open dumps around goa. Today, (and since 2006) Panaji's ENTIRE recycling initiative is run by about 30 'migrant scrap dealers' at St. inez and Campal who work for free (and supposedly pay a 10-20K monthly kickback to corrupt civic authorities to keep their jobs). Send them home and Panaji will cripple to a standstill in a fortnight. And another thing, soter, It's not only 'migrants'. There are a few Goans involved too. For an example, there's Proto Rodrigues of Caranzalem. You may verify by calling him at 9822386627 and ask him about his job. While you are at it, ask him how many Goans he's employed in his workforce, and why cant he employ any more? You probably know the answer anyway. The Gaddas near National Theatre were illegal squatters that did nothing for the city. They only set shop illegally, and tapped electricity from the Governmnent building adjacent to the Gaddas. They were also known for hosting a number of Matka agents, an banned sport of gambiling. and I know that they were given rehabilitation at the Municipal Market once they were removed. Why should one get a free space at the Muncipal market if one was operating illegally is a question I'ld like CCP to answer. Lastly, none of those Gaddas, (nor any gadda or handcart in Panaji) pays a paisa for their waste to be picked up by CCP. Enough said. I compost half my waste at home, and recycle the rest. While I compost in a compost unit located in my verandah, I store all my recycalbles in storage bins in my backyard. Recycling at my home happens once every three months only because 'migrant scrap dealers' help me in recycling. As my village panchayat does not have any facility for waste management I use these self created soloutons to solve my problems in an environmentally friendly way. Of course I can't recycle everything. It takes me a month to collect a plastic bagfull of material that's not compostable nor recyclable, and that I take to the municipal authorities nearby bin. In this way we reduce more than 85% of our waste from our household going to an open dump in Goa. Before you reply to this mail, and point fingers at Fredrick or anybody else, could you please reciprocate and let us all know in detail how you take care of your household waste? Thanks for bringing up this topic so that I could put my points across. Clinton.. Ps: Rico, in Copenhagen, I met a guy called John Mulrow who also works with composting and he told me that if you have a compost bin in your verandah like I do, you could also piss into it as shown in his website's demo vid '3 Things about Compost' at http://www.compostmodernist.org/ and prove to Soter that you do piss in your verandah! :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghBejY_A6zAfeature=player_embedded essage: 1 Date: Fri, 15 Jan 2010 07:48:17 +0530 From: soter so...@bsnl.in To: goa...@goanet.org Subject: Re: [Goanet] Remote Control Message-ID: 000a01ca9589$07144eb0$1901a...@user77948b9580 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1; reply-type=response See Fredericks heart bleed for migrant scrap dealers. He would have been absolutely silent if they were Goans. He has nothing to say when decades old gaddas of locals were removed near National theatre in Panjim. Everything has a place. I am sure that Frederick does not urinate in his verandah and would reserve certain intimate relationships for the bedroom. I think Frederick should accomodate all these scrap dealers in his compound as that would indicate his generosity. Cheering the creation of shit in someone else's backyard is easy. Frederick is a guy who goes abroad frequently, has he seen scrap and crap being piled up around monuments and public squares? Is he creating an issue for nothing? =Soter
Re: [Goanet] Rajan Parrikar and GBA
Dear John,' Your sentiments are well appreciated and welcomed. You have said it all, beautifully. I myself have gone on record to say that I would want to do a 'Don Corleon' style 'Godfather' on our bad guys if someone was good enough to gift-rap me a AK-47 :-)) Instead I have channelized my anger and frustration via filing PILs (7 successful to my record and I am already tired) and to give Goa an alternate 'Sane' ( vs MAD), workable, practical system of governance since the year 2000 [a solid decade has passed by without a ripple of note :)], where-in the missing link has been added most liberally - the ingredient of SELF-SACRIFICE. But, as always, sustainable 'French Revolution' style movements take its own time to build-up and I see that such viruses are presently getting the right temperature to multiply ( your post for instance), for it is a well known fact that for any virus to take hold and multiply, the right 'temperature' is the key. I have always been of the opinion that Goa needs a political system change, other than the imported 'Delhi - Nagpur - Maharashtra based High commands system of governance where the only criteria is: How to survive and scoop the Goan goodness , drain it away by keeping a few key players of Goan origin happy and satisfied. I have always said that Goa needs its own High Command solidly based in Goa which will afford a red carpet to be laid in the labyrinth of Delhi Command for Goa's Chief Minister to walk on, should he decide to visit Delhi rather than have Goa's Chief Minister on beck and call from Delhi where all he may manage to meet is a 'cook' here and a 'waiter' there of the Delhi High Command and not the Prince and/or the Queen. Goans have known for years what Goa needs 'a political solution', but they have always allowed themselves to be diverted and fragmented from this task through careful engineering by master-planners who have no interest of Goa at heart except for what it can give them (a holiday resort mostly). And the only way, as I see it, to snatch the 'candy', as it were, from the hands of these vested interests, is for Goans to come to realize that this ever non-finish'able candy will not last for ever and ever and when it is over, these players will just vanish in thin air, thumping their bellies to say we had our fill while it lasted - now who cares?? And then, it will be too late for Goans to hold the heavy baby, for they will have been reduced to mere weaklings. Therefore, all the more reason for sensible Goans (if there are any :) to join the PPS Brigade which must have, and will have, a fool-proof inbuilt 'fire wall' anti-infiltration safety system which will automatically keep the vested interests and infiltrators at bay and give entry to 'Goans' who have the self-sacrificing ingredient imbedded deeply into their very being. And this brigade must move 'parallel' with all the good work that has been done and is being done, GBA et al notwithstanding. Re: [Goanet] From one RG to another an open letter
Mr. Goveia, You have articulated concisely and well the rebuttal to some RGs claims of unwarranted meddling by concerned NRGs in matters Goa. I suspect theirs is a minority view culled in literary salons of the cognoscenti. In fairness, the RGs have a point in one area. Some well meaning NRGs in their eagerness to help are attempting to reinvent the environmental arena. RE: What are we waiting for posts? This appears a heavy handed approach and ignores and discounts the long struggle by the loyal concerned citizens and environmentalists resident in Goa for over the past 2 decades. You do recall Agonda circa 1980es where hardy villagers, lawyers and environmentalists successfully halted the resort development in its track, yes? Golf courses in a CRZ, you ask? Yes! At present the many RG activists have been the foot soldiers at the forefront not least of all brave Goans villagers battling special interests in face of threats, intimidation, litigation costs, time, etc Nandkumar Kamat has been at his quest for over 20 years. No one in a leadership position is addressing any of these issues as far as I can see anywhere in India. You are right.
