(Replying partially to myself) Well, afterall it works! I removed gdal-bin (installed from Ubuntu repo's) and build gdal from source. With a simple ./configure - make - sudo make install I get gdal/ogr almost working ( got expat support but lost something else ;-( ) I needed to add in
