if you are only using 4 oz in 3000 miles then can you tell me the speed you
are traveling at? If I stay at 65 or 70mph I hardly use any oil in any of
may bikes. but in France you will get passed by old ladies and that is on
the side streets.

To me, this is normal. The clutch is dragging. I bet it
In my experience, the GTS burns quite a bit of oil at high speed
(+150km/h)on the highway.
This at longer trips with an hot engine of course.
My dealer tells me that it's a typical Yamaha-problem, and that every Yamaha
burns oil.
Since my last oil-change, I use semi-synthetic oil, and it seems to

Not mine! Dry clutch - transmission has it's own oil and the engine oil sits
in the right 1/2 of the gas tank (that is, the oil tank)

Kelly,
FYI - I have heard that if you run Synthetic oil and then change back to
standard type oil it can/will cause damage to the engine. Not sure if anyone
else has heard of this, but that's what I have been told several times.
If that fact can be verified, it might be a possible answer to some

Does it do it each and every time? Or did it do this after sitting

the clutch plates "stick" together if it has been sitting unused for

I have no ideas, my GTS with Wingrack and bags is stable to 130+. Never a
twitch or glitch. I would check to see that the bolts are tight, and everything
is assembled loosely before tightening any fasteners.

Why do you want to ride with out your hands on the handlebars?
I wouldn't try it with three cases , carrying a load or not.
If you take off the two side cases and the problem goes away
then its down to aerodynamics. More drag at the back , making
the front light and unstable.

I estimate it uses ~ 1/3 of a quart every 3000
miles. I can get a better
estimate but I'd have to track usage for awhile.
Have you checked your steering head bearing adjustment?
guys I routinely ride without hands on the handlebars. ahh a throttle
lock works great. wwooo look at me I'm riding with no hands and full

I would try several things.
First, have you had any other service done to the bike recently? Either tire
replaced or chain and sprockets? Had either wheel off the bike recently?
There had been speculation in the past that if the wheel was reinstalled in a
different position than it came off,
