I've recently had a fancy for a lariat necklace that looks Edwardian (or
even actually is). Semi-precious stones of some sort at the ends of the
lariat. Does anyone know of any websites that sell them?

Re: [h-cost] white wool stockings

The best bet may be to layer stockings. You usually wear upper-class
clothing, so you would want your outer stocking to look good. Is it
an outdoor event or just cold indoors?

The other thing to look out for with thick stockings is that they may
not fit correctly with your shoes and may stretch them. For your
look, you would want a fine worsted anyway, not coarse and thick.

One extant stocking example in the Met in New York has had the foot
removed and is hemmed around the top of the foot. They probably took
out the worn portion, and there is enough that you could not tell
with shoes on. They are an intricate silk knit (1790s), possibly
salvaged to wear over a plain stocking.

And you can be sneaky and wear a modern thermal stocking underneath!

This is what I was thinking too.

Unless you want a more rustic look with the wool, I'd get a pair of
pantyhose or tights. They are very warm in themselves, but put your silk
stockings
over them and you should be quite warmunless it's like way below freezing.
The modern super-stretchy tights would be very smooth and more than likely
undetectable under your correct period stockings.

Even if you do get some fine wool stockings, layering may be needed to keep
you warm. Are there not depictions of men in layers of different colored
stockings...some rolled down a bit to show the layers underneath? Or is that
too
early? Too dandy?

I was at a vintage flea market where one booth was actually vests and
mittens and caps made from vintage felted (shrunken) sweaters (if you
stretch the definition of vintage to the 1980s). They made the vests from
the bodies of the sweaters and the caps and mittens from the sleeves. They
were soft and warm.

You could take the sweater to a good dry cleaners and ask them if blocking
it would help, but I'd guess that you have a retired sweater.

Welcome aboard! You'll find a number of 16th century/Elizabethan
costumers on this list, including myself (though many are more
able/prolific than I)!

I too am developing an interest in the social/political conditions
that led the English to colonize the Americas, mostly fueled by a
recent trip to Jamestown (1607). There was a tailor among the original
colonists and a number of clothing/sewing related artifacts found at
the fort site (thimble, doublet buttons, even a poking stick).

What are you currently working on?

I just wanted to post a brief introduction. My name is Sarah and live
in central Wisconsin. I first really got involved in history while
walking with friends around Heidelberg Castle in 1992 and picturing
people living there. I have been involved in living history since
about 1994, mainly US Civil War but dabbled in other periods and most
recently WWII. I keep coming back to Elizabethan and earlier,
however, and most recently while doing my genealogy research (most
interesting related to Henry VIII is an ancestor of mine is the
grandmother to Catherine Parr). I have participated off and on with
the SCA (more off than on) but am hoping to get involved again due to
the focus on research and practical application (if that makes
sense!). I am most interested in the social history of 16th Century
England - especially that which caused people to head across the pond
 to the colonies.

Right now I'm going through my fabrics and determining what I have and
what I can do with it. I have some good sized pieces of wool flannel,
linen, and definitely cotton. The silks I have are more 1860s pattern/
plaid and would not be appropriate for 16th Century. I am looking
forward to getting started - and participating when I can. :)

where it usually is very cold for this season.
I wondered if someone knows if a womans department in a big warehouse would
have long knee woolen stockings wich i could wear to my 18th century outfit?

Re: [h-cost] shrunken wool

2008-01-04 Thread Sylvia Rognstad
I would just try wetting it and reblocking it if it hasn't felted. Did
you hand wash it in cold water and lay flat to dry? If so, it may be
all right.

Is it merely shrunken? Or did it go all the way to felted?

Years ago, I heard of an old country remedy for slightly-shrunken
sweaters -- you soak the sweater in a solution of epsom salts and then
carefully re-block it. But I never tried it and I can't remember the
proportions Does anyone know what I'm talking about???

Good luck!

I accidentally washed a wool sweater and it shrank. Is there any cure
to

stretch it out again?

[h-cost] Period Patterns #41 Italian Renaissance Gowns

2008-01-04 Thread A Gardiner-Garden
I am making version V, but do not have the instructions. I am tracing
out the pieces and just got to the bodice. It has the nrmal bodice
shape, and then the v-neck overlaid. Can someone explain this bit to
me and how it is sewn/attached? I don't want to have to buy another
pattern to get instructions. If I do I'm sure the instructions will
turn up! Tempting... but too costly to experiment.

Cheers and thanks, Aylwen
