[h-cost] Trim question

2008-11-20 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
I am looking for a metallic gold fringe about 1.25 long that would
have been used on a gown in 1812. I'm also looking for a matching gold
braid about 1/8 wide.

If the gown was made in the UK would this trim be silk or cotton?

In all probability it would have been gold fringe. Gold and silver
thread was used for embroidery, usually a flat strip wound round a
core of silk, often yellow/gold in colour. Gold and silver bullion
was used to make fringe, and as far as I know there is no reason to
suppose that this would not have been used on a dress of 1812.

book) and am not finding undergarments specifically dated to 1828.
This is a transition period from the classical Regency look into the
big gigot sleeves so the sleeve heads are large but not huge, the
waistline has crept down to about the natural waist, maybe a little
high but not right up under the bust. Classic Regency corsets are
too short but a later corset (Edwardian) gives the wrong profile.
Any help with links to 1826-1829 garments, particularly

Re: [h-cost] How to do a regency-era neckline

Hi there
I've done more looking and it looks like two pieces rolled around each

The embroidery is a spaghetti strap. How on earth I make that is
another story! Remember, this period is all handsewn, too.

Does anyone know why all the action is out there? Things do happen

I'd say beginning costumer. I think they are right in focusing the site on

2-6 March (ends with a ball)
   2. travel to Kentucky to catch up with friends at Berea on 7 March
   3. travel to Williamsburg for the two Symposiums 12-18 March
   4. attend Military Through the Ages, in Jamestown, Virginia 19-20 March
   5. fly out of Virginia on 22-23 March

So far Delta looks the best carrier to go with and flies into Harrisburg and
out of Virginia.

Now to find kind people to help us get around in between and offer us
billets : ) as I fear my budget will be shot :(

Costumes Required (so far):

1860s ballgown for me and tails for my son

Airline: Delta has been recommended

Bye for now,

Hi Cynthia
Unfortunately the Stanford Historical Dance Week has just been cancelled,
hence the need to re-schedule our time as we've already bought our plane
tickets. John has been in contact with various dance groups and is
organising some teaching and dancing spots but as the eternal historical
costumer, I'm looking for something to do as well as dance.
We're teaching a dance workshop at the San Francisco Free Folk Festival on
the 25, so there's a bad clash with the wig workshop. Sad, as I just
received some wigs to practice on after chatting with the wigmaker at
Williamsburg and it would have been nice to improve my skills a bit more.

I went into the store tonight and they offered me a discount on the Canon
Powershot G12 - the others mentioned are not available here. It does seem to
work well in low light - this is an issue I'm always having problems with.
For emergency outdoor family stuff I use my iphone 4 which turns out pretty
good. Although the Canon Powershot G12 doesn't seem to be wizz-bang like the
others, it impresses me with its small size and low light feature.
See how I go, and thanks so much for this discussion - its been mighty

While my photography knowledge is severely lacking, I would suggest
selecting a model thy gives you the beat quality photos without a tripod.
That way you'll get good photos in places you cannot use a tripod, but
always have the tripod for extra help.

[h-cost] Elizabethan trunkhose

2011-08-17 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
I am planning to make a start on some Elizabethan trunkhose and wanted to
ask anyone on this list with experience in this area for their help. In my
past dealings with these garments there has been a lot of layers of fabric
at the waist line and much difficulty sewing through the layers, both by
hand and by machine.
Are there any ways to reduce this? I have carpal tunnel in my wrists so
prefer lighter work, hence why I've avoided these in the past. Crunch time
has come and I really need to make a set. I'd like them to look historically
accurate on the outside, but in consideration to my wrists I'm happy to
consider alternatives inside and out of sight.

Cinquecento sono raccolti all'interno dl volume Moda a Firenze 1540-1580.
suoi abiti, caratterizzati dallo stile severo, siano confezionati localmente

 Moda a Firenze 1540-1580
Cosimo I de' Medici's style / Lo stile di Cosimo I de' Medici

After Moda a Firenze 1540-1580. Lo stile di Eleonora di Toledo e la sua
influenza (2005), the research project goes on, now with male clothing of
the same period. Thanks to the papers from the Archivio di Stato of
Florence, the author reconstructs the whole wardrobe of Eleonora’s husband,
Cosimo I de’ Medici, day by day from 1544 until 1574, that is from the first
time notes about the duke’s clothes appeared in official documents till the
death of Cosimo. The founder of the grand-ducal dynasty created his public
image with great care and determination, but Roberta Orsi Landini focus
attention as well on Cosimo I’s personal tastes. The book describes fashion
development in Florence through the analysis of items from the duke’s
wardrobe and makes confrontations with potrait-paintings in order to define
when new styles started up and which were the most favourite colours,
materials and decorations of the period. Besides, the manufacturers panorama
is meticulously reconstructed. Synoptic tables illustrate every change
during the forty years; they are also a great tool to date paintings.
Moreover, the author reconstructs the paper patterns of Cosimo and his son
don Garçia’s burial gowns. Appendix includes daily off-the-peg clothes

I've tried that but it bubbled - because the thickness of the threads under

[h-cost] Historical Costume Tour of England in September - just 5 places left

Dear Friends
I have five places left on this historical costume and dance tour if anyone
wishes to join us - we now have friends joining us from the US, Australia,
the Netherlands and England - so you will be in good company.
And you don't have to know how to dance - we have absolute beginners as
well as more experienced dancers on tour - all levels are catered for. You
do need to love dressing up and having your photo taken in historic houses
and gardens throughout England :)
More information is at http://www.earthlydelights.com.au/tours - we are
making non-refundable payments at this stage, so can't keep the places open
for too much longer.

work. I am so happy to see the list active again. I love Facebook but the
brief comments are not enough for me. I love h-costume's detailed messages
and learning from your different interests in costuming.

[h-cost] Last minute reminder about our Historic Costume Tour to England this September

2013-04-30 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Dear Group
We've had some members of this group contact us about our upcoming one-off
historical costume study tour to England and the Jane Austen Festival in
Bath. I am making non-refundable payments today for our accommodation
on-route and will be letting spare rooms go - so if you had been thinking
about joining us, please contact us before it is too late - as in some
places we have booked the last remaining accommodation.
This one-off tour is full of costume study opportunities, chances to dress
up for dinner and dancing, and lots of sightseeing. Read more about it on
our website at http://www.earthlydelights.com.au/tours - and at this stage
we have members from the US, England, the Netherlands and Australia -
everyone is welcome. My husband and I are leading the tour and there is
something for both men and women - particularly as my husband and son will
be finding alternate activities to do when we view costume study tables, so
if you have a husband who would like to join them, the more the merrier! If
you can't join us for the whole tour, just join us for part - the most
popular part so far seems to be the 2nd half touring around the English
countryside - however there is more historical costume study during the
London section.
Many thanks,
Aylwen

Re: [h-cost] Boning and corsets for musicians

2013-10-20 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
I'm thinking about Victorian fashion here. Are there any pictures of women
sitting down playing music? I've seen women corsetted when standing up
playing the violin, but how did they manage playing the piano? Or are my
musicians complaining too much?
I'm right at the beginning in my research so far.
Many thanks,

Re: [h-cost] grid board tutorial

Good luck! I ended up going to the Tudor Tailor website and ordering the
full-size patterns. My brain gets confused by all the math in grading.

 Hi Natalie,

If I understand what you're asking, I have expanded the pattern to full
size per the book - that makes it into the size 9 or the size of the
original garment in the case of a Janet Arnold book. Form there I graded it
to my size and made several muslins until it fit correctly. I don't know
that my math skills would be able to change it all at once, from a drawing
on a graph to my size in one step. If you think you're experienced enough
to skip that first step, I'd say go for it and save yourself a couple of
hours. I know I can't - just not enough experience and not a proportioned
 body enough to do it.

Good luck and let us know how it goes,

I'm using The Tudor Tailor to design the next round of costuming for my

commercial paper patterns, and I can do this fairly easily, including
resizing. The Tudor Tailor patterns are printed on a grid within the
 book.
It is my understanding that I need to hand-draw the pattern, life size,
using a gridded mat. If I need to enlarge or shrink the pattern, may I
 do
so by using the grid directly (increase all lines by 1/2 square, for
example) and save myself having to draw out the original size first, or
 do
I first have to follow the grid exactly and then increase/decrease using
the regular rules for pattern grading? A tutorial on using the gridded
 mat
to transfer the pattern from book to life-size would be appreciated.

 to
change dress size (like, from size 10 to size 12 or vice versa) then you
need to look up pattern grading or grading patterns but that
 doesn't

Could someone point me to an online tutorial on how to use a pattern
  grid board to:
  1. Copy a pattern from a book that is on a grid (like in The Tudor
 Tailor)
  2. Use that grid to make the pattern a larger/smaller size.

I'm used to working with tissue patterns, so this is new territory for

interpreted the 18th-century business and craft of millinery with its
ever-changing fashions. As fashion has evolved and changed with time, so
has the trade. Millinery through Time will explore the development of the
trade from the 18th century, dealing with thousands of fashionable
accessories, to the 21st century, specializing in a single fashionable
item: hats. This conference will present an understanding of the trade
from a scholarly and a technical perspective through the collaboration of
lectures, hands on workshops, and demonstrations. Join us as we step into
the world of millinery, one of change, creativity, commerce, and fashion.

[h-cost] JP Ryan Pet-en-l'air/Francaise pattern

2014-05-27 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Has anyone here used the JP Ryan Pet-en-l'air/Francaise pattern? I've come

I'm about to cut out the skirt extension and am adding length to it. If I
match the length of the side that is sewn to the back skirt piece then the
angled side piece that is sewn to the front piece is too long. Should I
simply be extending the length of the extension and then chopping off the
extra bit, or should I be measuring the width across the bottom of this
piece and making the new longer piece the same width at the bottom and
re-drawing the angled side seam line?

Cheers,

[h-cost] Historical costume kickstarter project

2016-12-02 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Dear Friends

I am writing to seek your help financing my Kickstarter book project by
pre-purchasing my costume-in-detail book about 18th and early 19th century
trims, frills and furbelows - the finishing touches.

This is the first time you'll see such a focus on the 18th and early 19th
century trims from the inside out - and the book will also have how-to
photographic explanations with each garment showing you how to reproduce
the trim by hand yourself! Its been exciting to have museums in the UK
coming on board and allowing me full access to their collections in
mid-2017 and the rights to publish photos of their costumes.

I'd love your support - please read more at https://www.kickstarter.
com/projects/1245085016/trims-frills-and-furbelows and please also share
this information with your historical costume appreciating friends.

Warmest Regards,
and many thanks, again, for your support,

*Aylwen Gardiner-Garden*

Dear Charlene
I forgot to add in my reply to you yesterday that as a pledger you do not
have to wait until December 2017 - all pledgers will be able to access a
password-protected website where you can follow my journey and see all my
book updates.
Many thanks,
Aylwen
