wasn't it possible in the past to do a clean install with a ungrade disk
Win 8 UPGRADE is different. Once you install the original OS is
overwritten and the license key is gone. But you can put use the
upgrade disk to install move your license to another computer but I
guess you have to
How do you install it clean when the upgrade disk is not made to
boot? You must have a OEM or retail disk.

in the old days I think they did or we booted to a boot disk with cd
support and ran setup from there.
I think the new stuff if smarter.
Memory is a little fussy.
Remember when cd installs needed drivers ?

I think you misunderstood what I meant... the Windows 8 PRO upgrade
disk... what MS was selling a year ago for $25 download and $50
disk... does not boot by design. It will only run from within windows
and it will only install over a qualified OS = XP, Vista, Win 7 with
a legal activated
Winterlight,
If you opt the DVD version, you get a DVD shipped to you. Before I did a clean
install I waited for the DVD to arrive. Those days were hard on my nerves :)

Yes, I bought a DVD version from Newegg on sale with $40 MS Rebate
for an eventual 30 bucks. I just thought I would keep that for a new
laptop so I can upgrade to PRO. But it is the same thing as the
download able version upgrade disk = install within windows. I know

Last year I bought one of the 25 dollar Windows 8 Pro upgrade iso

I have all ready installed Win7 on another hard drive with the boot
drive located on a clean SSD ready for Windows 8 to do the upgrade.
Can I boot off
Can I boot off the Win 8 DVD and install that way or do I need to start
the install from within windows 7?
You need to start the upgrade from within Windows - booting straight
from the disc won't upgrade and your key may not work either (as it's an
upgrade key, not a full install key).
I guess
OK I installed from within windows 7, but Win 8 never gave me the
opportunity to install in another partition so it overwrote the
Windows 7 install. I must of done something wrong but what? When it
asked if I wanted to keep data and libraries I send no thinking it
would ask me where I wanted
I don't know if Win8 supports a side-by-side upgrade installation -
that's something I haven't tried. All the literature I've seen only
talks of in-place upgrades.
The custom install option might do what you're looking for, but I'm not
sure.

I have all ready installed Win7 on another hard drive with the boot drive
