Hi Jim,
What do you consider a synthetic? I've recently seen an
i am talking about cast resin as far as the wheel goes.
i am sorry i wasn't clear in my original post. i guess MDF doesn't fit my
definition of synthetic seeing it is made from wood product. given the choice
between
MDF and a good hardwood laminate i would go with the laminate...
but as i said
I've been playing a horrible lil symphonie that fits this description - and
will continue to play it until the economy improves or someone wants to
volunteer to be my sugar daddy.

I have a synthetic wheel on my hg - a renaissance HG made by Olympic musical
instruments. I'm sure Alden can speak to construction of the wheel and
composition - wouldn't presume to say anything on that topic. As a player

Germán Diaz from Spain plays a (I think) Weichselbaumer (/I think) with a
plastic wheel... he uses liquid rosin also, on the wheel and specially to
tight the cotton on the strings, so that he can play the wheel both ways,

With MDF I suppose if you immersed the wheel in water it would swell
(but if you keep your instrument in a bucket of water, that's likely
to be the least of your problems). For normal use, however, humidity
does not affect MDF. It is, in fact, made from wood particles in a
resin binder.
this symphony is a realy better buy than a musikit anyway , at
700-800. , my son have one , and he is ok with this .sylvain-
