RE: [hlcoders] [OT] Compiling the SDk
I'm running WinXP Pro with VS .net and am having no problems what so ever. The only problem I had was installing the 64 bit drivers for my video card, then realising what I had done :( (I don't have a 64 bit processor). Oh well, that wasn't Windows XP's fault anywho. RE: [hlcoders] Counter-Strike : Condition Zero
Most of the tech will indeed be avaliable for people to use since most changes where done in the engine. Stuff like the use of masked textures on models and stuff like that. I've been working on moving the whole particle system into a separate .dll so that can be distributed and mod authors can just plug that in and use it. We'll see how it goes. -Original Message- From: Chris Blane To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 3/25/2001 5:28 PM Subject: Re: [hlcoders] Counter-Strike : Condition Zero Hehhe maybe I should try to talk nicely to Marc Schröder and see what I can get out of him. :) I doubt I'll get anywhere though but he's the only guy on the team I've spoken with alot. [hlcoders] Steam
I think Steam is a great idea, i downloaded the whole CS1.4 in under 5 minutes, it takes almost an hour to download it off a website. I find that Steam is extremely fast on my cable, though slower on my friends DSL connection. I agree with what was said about being able to test out a game for a month to see if its worth actually buying and keeping. Having a temporary subscription that could be cancelled at the end of the month would be awsome. But it begs the question, how are they going to prevent from hacking or warez groups getting at it. I mean, from what i can see one person can pay for the games, and then zip up the files and send it on over. I played CS1.4 before i installed Half-Life (after i formatted) so obviously it doesn't need HL to be played. Just my opinion. - Original Message - From: "Philip (Fiber)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, March 23, 2002 10:59 PM Subject: RE: [hlcoders] Steam > I agree, although I have many games that I don't play anymore (old ones > like Freespace), I still sometimes will come back to them. Re: [hlcoders] Steam
I caught Gabe's talk about STEAM at the GDC, and left feeling really excited about the potential this might allow small independent game developers to release a title without having to be worried about being 'strong armed' by the traditional publishers into accepting less than an acceptable deal just to get a title out there. I still haven't researched all the nuances of STEAM, but it did sound like not only an innovative technical feat, but also an innovative business model as well. Folks, I have been mucking in the client and server DLL to enable more than the standard weapon slots. I have changed MAX_WEAPON_SLOTS to 8 and recompiled both the client and server dll. Why is everyone having such a prob with XP and Development? I have been doing MOD coding for a good 3 - 4 months on XP with VS 6 and VS .NET with no problems. Re: [hlcoders] Steam
I'm glad VALVe is coming into the 21st century, unlike MPAA and RIAA. Thanks VALVe for maintaining american ingenuity to adapt to the consumer market and using technologies to your advantage. As a business, it's undemocratic to throw your weight around. File sharing media is here to stay, and if the MPAA and RIAA go out of business then it's their own fault, not the government's. VALVe always seems like they're ahead of the game (so to speak). That's the only place you'll survive in the technology industry. Thank you for introducing a new model. Thank you for the option to keep the old. -Tim - Original Message - From: "Philip (Fiber)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, March 23, 2002 10:59 PM Subject: RE: [hlcoders] Steam > I agree, although I have many games that I don't play anymore (old ones > like Freespace), I still sometimes will come back to them. [hlcoders] Windowed mode driving me nuts! [OT?]
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] I'm having problems getting Half-Life to behave properly in windowed mode. When I Alt-Tab away from Half-life, or when I hit a breakpoint, the game window loses focus but is still in the foreground. This only happens when it's in a game, not with any of the menu screens. I had this problem before and somehow fixed it but can't remember how. Then a started over with a fresh SDK and it's back, even though I THINK I copied all my settings over. Here are the settings on the Debug page: Executable for debug session: d:\Half-Life\hl.exe Working directory: D:\Half-Life\ Program arguments: -developer -sw -game weightless +sv_lan 1 +maxplayers 8 +map bounce Any idea what I've done wrong? It would be wise to make a backup of USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT before wiping out your Windows partions. Also some screwy applications (like Outlook) store all of the application data in obscure Windows folders (like Windows\Application Data\{BR549_OTHER_SCREWY_CRAP_HERE}\BLAH\BLAH).
