I had similar experience with z196. Used IND$FILE to download to USB. Not only could HMC not process the last byte in the file, it screwed things up so badly that I had to reboot it! As Doug says, it's easy to fix. Even plain old Notepad works. Just don't leave that last byte hanging there.

Sometimes the SMF datasets will switch during shutdown or IPL and the exit does not catch the fact. I cobbled a program that gets run as part of IPL to examine SMF control blocks and issue dump commands for the datasets that need to be dumped.

I don't think the number of address spaces in a subsystem matters too much. What's eating me, though, is the numbers of Db2 subsystems. Recent "social circle" includes 135, 80, and several at 50+. I suppose, though, the multiplier - MSTR+IRLM+DIST+DBM1+optionals x #subsystems - is the killer.
