Is the test suite read or write intensive or both?

On SSDs, read and write speeds do not differ as heavily as with
spindle counterparts. IIRC, SSD reads are of the order of 750 Mbps and
writes are of the order of 650 Mbps.

Ironically, C programmers understand this much better than Lisp
programmers. One of the ironies of the programming world is that using
Lisp is vastly more productive than using pretty much any other
programming language, but successful businesses based on Lisp are
quite rare. The reason for this, I think, is that Lisp allows you to
be so productive that a single person can get things done without
having to work together with anyone else, and so Lisp programmers
never develop the social skills needed to work effectively as a member
of a team. A C programmer, by contrast, can't do anything useful
except as a member of a team. So although programming in C hobbles you
in some ways, it forces you to form groups whose net effectiveness is
greater than the sum of their parts, and who collectively can stomp on
all the individual Lisp programmers out there, even though one-on-one
a Lisper can run rings around a C programmer.

IMHO, every programmer must know C. It exposes the actual working of
your program. Once you cross the basics, you will HAVE to understand
how your program data and code gets organised in memory and stuff.
Once you start trying to optimise for code size and performance, you
will get to understand a lot more. Getting a systems perspective is
VERY important. Go learn C (if you can do parallel learning do LISP)

Re: [ilugc] Encrypted password captured when listening on network

On Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 4:01 AM, Ashish Verma ilu...@gmail.com wrote:
I want to know if it is possible for someone to gain access to resources if
they capture a person's encrypted password.

It depends on the protocol. If its a very simple protocol where the
initial authentication between the server and the client is only
encrypted (the remaining traffic after authentication is sent on the
clear) and no freshness (say a session key with an expiry time) is
used then whatever you say is possible. But I doubt anybody uses such
a protocol.

 For Eg:

Gmail uses https once the authentication process starts. This is basically
to ensure that if anyone is listening on the network he gets garbled text.
So if a person is able to emulate the session and send the encrypted
password with my user-id... will he gain access to my gmail account?

Gmail uses full https. The entire traffic is encrypted and is session
key based. So if someone does the relay attack (where the adversary
stores the encrypted traffic and replays it later on) to authenticate
himself, the session key would no longer be the same. So the server
(here gmail) will not be able to decrypt your message. If the attacker
does this during an active session (i.e. the session keys are still
valid), he will be able to send this emulated/stored encrypted traffic
and the server will validate it. But since the adversary does not know
the session key, he will receive back encrypted garbage which only the
client (with the correct session key) can decrypt. So again this is
not very useful.

And of course by the very nature of encryption (one way functions[1])
it is not possible/very hard to retrieve the key from an encrypted
data.

In short you are OK *in general*. But then one can do slightly
sophisticated attacks. IMO security is always an illusion :)

Hope this helps.

IMO, Linux is NOT fine to begin with. The code is way too big for a
beginner to handle. And its something I would NEVER recommend for a
newbie. Plus, it is extremely easy to get lost, frightened and
disappear.

The best place to start when it comes to OS would be small kernels.

E.g. RTEMS, TinyOS, FreeRTOS, Ångström, ucLinux and the likes.

You would have already guessed most of these relate to embedded
systems which enforce a lot of resource constraints. So they have to
be small and stripped off unnecessary crap. Once you learn one of
these, you can graduate to Linux much more easily and then move ahead.

My two cents.

office (where at bangalore around 200 people used to work), havent
seen anyone using linux. every system will be preinstalled with XP.  I
have seen our support engineers using Solaris 10 (Sun support).

Why I am telliing all these,  I dont think we can blame anyone - for
not seeing Linux.

Though I am fully satisfied with Ubuntu, I could not install them at
my office, where my HO people are shouting - since they cannot support
for Ubuntu. I have installed 9.04 9.10 in my own laptop.

I know there is a LUG in chennai, and if organisation like that gives
us more about customising others for Ubuntu, we shall help more
people, outside this Linux group.  I know you all are very very good
in linux.  whereas we do not know more than just customising.  I do
not blame you all at all

Instead, on saturdays sundays, IF POSSIBLE,  can anyone give us
basic knowledge of customising certain aspects of Ubuntu, in chennai.

I can / others too can organise for such ones.  Just meet for max. 2
to 3 hours ( No parties etc - just Gyan).  we will meet informally.

I feel that people who are outside the regular Linux group (like you
all) can only lure the people who are using Windows.  If you all tell
that 9.10 is better than windows XP or 7, they will say you are all
experienced and can do all that is required.

In short : give us A LITTLE MORE of what you all know.  We will
evangelise for you.  I know that LINUX DO NOT NEED EVANGELISTS,
!!.

May be I have barged in without qualification - in this chat.

[1] Remove anonymous edits

Every new user registration can be configured to send an email to the

Is'nt this sending an email request touching the nose round the head

query it wont display properly. my aim is to not learn ssh or mysql. for me
data is important and my aim is to fix the site ASAP. hence i was looking
 for control panel access.

Though Kapil has replied to most of the above points, I think it would
be useful to add my gyan or experience in administering the Ubuntu
India LoCo server for over 2 years now.

1.  We use Mediawiki there. And I must say it just works. Disabling
Anonymous edit and adding a math captcha during registration reduced
hella lot of spam attacks. And ofcourse if we integrate some spam
filter also, it will be almost nill. Though I rarely remember seeing a
spam bot attack after I added the match captcha.

2. We dont use cPanel (if thats what you are talking as Control
Panel), and taking backups has been a breeze. Kapil already gave the
mysql command too and it really helped when we moved from one server
to another a year back. Every admin task is being done over ssh and we
feel we have complete control. I also use cPanel for my own personal
site and it isnt a easy thing as you have already mentioned about
getting control etc.

3. I dont think we (ilugc) need fancy stuff like calendar, polls,  etc
etc. Just plain wiki with info. Since in wiki every registered user
will have access, its upto the community to keep it updated. 9ofcourse
with a few pages protected)

4. For monitoring the changes, I (I dont know the other three admins
what they use) use the RSS feed of the RecentChanges page and
constantly monitor them using Google reader. Works good to keep track
of who is changing what just like reading blog feeds.

I just want to say say Dont break your head with lot of things and

To: ubuntu...@lists.ubuntu.com

Hi,

Is the Ubuntu mirror at IITM, Chennai facing some downtime?  I have
not been able to access it since today morning, around 5 o clock.
Kindly confirm the status, as otherwise this would mean a problem in
the network of our college LAN, which could be rectified.

Thank You.

Is there any arm based free compiler in linux, which supports arm7 arm9.

http://www.gnuarm.com/ (Tools also On emdebian repos)

And I need some sample codes for that compiler. And Is there any limitations
 for that compiler.

Sample code? There is always the standard Hello World that you can
write and try it out to see your setup is working fine. Limitations of
the compiler is very abstract thing. It depends on a lot of factors
and unless you want to dig deep into tool chain development and stuff,
I don't think one generally need to worry at this factor (especially
if you are just beginning to do embedded development)

You can check out http://fpga4u.epfl.ch/wiki/FPGA4U_Description (it
costs about 4500 INR and also with additional cost of say 1000 INR you
get an ARM board extension) You can do a lot of stuff with this
student board. Not a promotion, but I can try to get one down if you
need it when I come to India (I am not confirming it though as I need
to check with a lot of folks)

Here is the article of Greg Kroah-Hartman, maintainer of the USB and other

quite young compared to Mandriva, Gentoo.

 http://www.kroah.com/log/linux/lpc_2008_keynote.html

Doesn't this article itself simply put things straight. Ubuntu has
been around for 4 years *only* now as compared to the oldies like
Gentoo and Debian or for that matter RH. And already the upstream
kernel contributions is increasing and am sure will soon catch up with
the other distros. Also, one must understand lots of kernel devels
work in Redhat and Novell. for. E.g Alan Cox was with RH and Greg
himself works for Novell. So one can expect many commits from these
folks.

Also quite a lot of Ubuntu devels are also Debian Developers and there
could me a few commits that is a part of the patch sent from Debian.
I am not still sure about the numbers and quite surprised with the
Gentoo figure.

Well, I guess Canonical is on the right path. But one argument I agree
completely is Canonical is being run by Mark Shuttleworth, but the
better side of it is it has got a big community now and with its ever
increasing User base, there is no necessity to fear the worse.

And LP will be Open Source in a year from now with the Road map
already in place.
http://popey.com/Launchpad_to_go_Open_Source_by_next_OSCon

To conclude, I think the views will change in a couple of years from
now as Ubuntu matures (not that it is immature now) and they are a
couple of years older than what they are today.

Cheers!

2008-08-05 Thread Aanjhan R
Hi,

You must have heard on the Ubuntu Global Bug Jam by now. If not read
it here NOW - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GlobalBugJam
It would be great if a few of the interested folks in Chennai can get
together at some place with Internet connectivity and start squashing
bugs jointly. Anybody game? If so please reply to this thread. We will
get a venue (if you have a proposal/agree to host for the same, most
welcome). Its not necessary that we end up being there all the three
days, we can fix a convenient time and get together.

In fact we have our LUG meet too this week IIRC. May be after the LUG
meet we can head to some place and start squashing bugs. If nothing
works out, I have wireless at my place and a big covered terrace where
I can host a few people with Coffee and biscuuuts ;).

Also there is a quick intro session tomorrow at #ubuntu-bugs @
irc.freenode.net from 2130 hrs IST for general questions about the
Global Bug Jam. Be there!!!

Lets squash bugs
