Mail distribution list vs. Comcast

2008-10-15 Thread Bill Spencer

Hi there: All of a sudden, a distribution list of about 100 addresses
won't go through Mail Comcast. The message is something about cannot
deliver to... and includes about a dozen addresses. But if I split it
up into 3 smaller lists, they each go fine. Comcast tells me there is
no limit on the size of distribution lists, so I guess I can't blame
them this time. What might be going on?

Thanks in advance!

Safari and the keychain

Hi again: Recently, when I migrated from the G3 to the Tiger iMac,
Safari all of a sudden decided it had to ask me for my password each
time for keychain access. This got old in a hurry, as you can imagine.
I haven't been able to find anything about this in Safari's Help

NYT article on malware etc.

2008-12-06 Thread Bill Spencer

FYI.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/06/technology/internet/06security.html?_r=1hp

Note this sentence about halfway through:

For now, Apple’s Macintosh computers are more or less exempt from the
attacks, but researchers expect Apple machines to become a larger
target as their market share grows.

Sad but ultimately not so surprising, I think. And the bigger picture
the article emphasizes, that our vulnerability increases the more we
depend on the Internet, is dead-on and one that no OS can really
address. Credit-card numbers may be OK on my local machine but not so
OK journeying through cyberspace or residing on the bank's or a
merchant's system.

C'est la guerre.

cartridge for my poor old Apple 12/640 PS. How feasible is it to put
new toner into old cartridges? Messy? Reliable? Complicated? Etc. etc.

As you probably know, the Apple part number for that toner cartridge
is M4683G/A, and using that or your model number, I found thousands of
hits on Google for remanufactured/compatible cartridges, at least as
low as $62+shipping (6,000 pages @ 5% coverage), and almost all of
 those I checked offered refilling.

So, I don't think rare really applies, but you don't have the
advantage my old Laserwriter Pro 630 has of having an HP equivalent.
FYI, the other printers using your cartridge include: Xerox DocuPrint
P12, GCC Elite 12/1200N,12/600,1212, IBM 4312, IBM Network Printer 12,
 and NEC Superscript 1260,1260N.

BTW, believe it or not, toner is considered a toxic material and you
need to take special care not to breathe in any of that fine
polystyrene powder if you do undertake refilling yourself--and follow
your communities' rules on disposal of household toxic waste.

Oh, I know there are cartridges out there, but if $62 plus shipping is
the low price that is still mighty steep for me. That's why I'm
wondering about buying the toner by itself. I have always understood
that it's messy stuff, which is another reason I'm asking...how simple
is the process of refilling and how tidy is it possible to be. Ink
cartridges are one thing, but laser seems like a totally different
kettle of fish. And I also have this notion (who knows where I got it)
that the cartridge itself begins to wear after a while and I wonder if
refilling one is worth it if the wear level is such that using a
refilled one could affect print quality.

Thanks! Bill

I am hoping there's a way to get the newer machine (see details
below) when it fires up Mail to do so using the mailboxes on the
older machine. (This is because I generally use the older machine
but occasionally it's not available to me.) It looks as though the
Synchronize feature only works 1) if you have a .Mac account, which
I don't, or 2) only if your mail server uses the IMAP protocols,
which mine doesn't...they use POP. Is there some other technique I
can use to achieve this? Mail on the older machine is version 2.1.3,
and I don't know the version on the newer machine since I just
installed Snow Leopard last night. As always, my thanks in advance!

If you want to stick with POP3...

On your main machine, set Mail to leave messages on the POP3 server
 for about 30 days.

On the other machine, set Mail to leave messages on the POP3 server forever.

So... On the other machine, it will happily grab messages it hasnt
seen before.  On the main machine it will do the same, plus delete
 old stuff.

Of course, this won't sync your outgoing messages  but it does ok.

Another soln, that my housemate uses... Only do mail from the web
interface on your other machine.  That way nothing is ever lost or
 deleted.

 - Dan.
 --

Well, I have no agenda regarding POP3 one way or the other, and no
choice that I know of unless I switch email providers. And the
outgoing messages would be a very nice thing to have...but I have this
notion that there's a way to get Mail to load everything from a remote
machine, something about telling it to go to the library of the other
machine rather than using the local library. Oh well, this is not a
big deal, just a convenience I was hoping to have. I'll just set them
up as you suggest. Thanks! Bill

That may put you part way there.  Cables deal with hardware issues.
It seems your problem is also with the lack of an updated software
driver.  I googled laserwriter Snow Leopard.  Find your printer
 here:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#apple

Also, check out the other hits on the same google search.  Hope this
 helps.

Many thanks, Al...the driver is actually there in SL according to
Apple, but then again I am hearing rumors that not all parallel-to-USB
cables are created equal. Anyone have any suggestions for cable brands
or models to look at (or avoid)? What I really am hoping for is the
simplest, cheapest, and most space-neutral solution. I actually have
an old G3 iBook that would work perfectly as a print server (thanks
Bruce, as usual), but alas I unintentionally murdered the motherboard
last spring, and the cost of getting someone who knows what they're
doing to replace same is astronomical. Maybe I can stick a new one in
myself, I dunno...something else to research in my copious free time.

 No, you misunderstand.

The printer *itself* will work as a print server. It has an ethernet
port and connects directly to the network; and I KNOW they support lpd
(The manual has detailed directions on using it with Unix clients), so
 no Appletalk is needed.

Put  it on the network, give it a fixed IP address, and just point
your Macs to it to print.

To do this you'll need a local area network set ; if your Mac is
connected directly to the cable/dsl box you'll need to get a cable
router or wireless access point with multiple ethernet connections on
 the back.

Print a self-test page to find out the Ethernet id: of the printer

Connect the printer via ethernet cable to the router, and get into the
router's manual to find how to set the printer up with a fixed IP
address. Usually this requires setting the router to know a certain
Ethernet ID (or MAC address) is always set to get the same IP address
form the server. I haven't messed with an old laserwriter in years,
you MAY need to tell it to get it's IP address via DHCP; see the
 printer manual.

 http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/printers/03...

Once this is done, go into your Mac, get into Printer setup and choose
IP in the 'Add Printer' dialog.Enetr the IP address assigned to the
printer and choose the appropriate driver.

Voila'...Printing on an old printer with Snow Leopard.

Okay, thanks, and sorry to have gotten mixed up. I'm still a bit mixed-
up, unfortunately, since the (minimal) two-iMac network I have is all
from an AirPort Express whose only Ethernet port is being used to
connect it to the cable-modem. Do I have to get a second router into
the loop? I tried that once before some years back and couldn't get
everything to talk to everything else...something about the order of
what was wired to where, before the wireless part kicked in. Sorry to
be dense about this stuff. Bill

Re: Snow Leopard won't play with my printer...

2009-10-02 Thread Bill Spencer

After doing as much research as I have time for I'm thinking that I
can get the printer's IP address if I 1) install OS 9 and Panther on
the external FW drive I use for backups (I have disc images of 9 and
its updates, and install discs for Panther), 2) boot from there in
Panther (since I understand that I can't boot either iMac in 9 since
they're Intel machines), 3) launch Classic, and then 4) fire up the
Apple Printer Utility (or whatever it's called). That drive's about
85% empty right now so space isn't an issue, but I'm wondering about a
couple of things:

A) Can I partition this drive without deleting what's already there?

B) Would I need separate partitions for OS 9 and Panther?

C) Is creating OS partition(s) even necessary? I probably wouldn't
keep the OS stuff there long-term since I have no need for Classic,
let alone 9, except for this (I hope) one-time issue.

D) Would there be any reason to install OS 9 alone, then cart the
drive and the printer to a friend's house who has a G4 eMac which
could run 9 by itself? I'd rather not have to horse the stuff around
but if the main strategy is flawed I can certainly do so.

E) Can I install 9 from the images or would I have to burn discs and
install from those?

If there's anything I'm missing or forgetting, please give me a whack
on the head. As always my thanks in advance!

2G, some say 3G, some say 4G. LEM says both 3 and 4 on different pages.
  Who's right? Thanks!

Not to be flip, but do you mean the first in the list of two or the
first model built?  In any case, I'd look at the Apple specs on their
web site.  That reflects the status of available RAM at the time of
design.  I'd also look at what both Crucial, and Macsales (OWC) and
maybe other reputable vendors are willing to sell for the maximum.
That could more than the Apple spec.

 Al Poulin

Oops, sorry, I meant the older one, meaning the 1.83 ghz machine. I
had always understood that it can go to 2G, which is what Apple says,
but got thrown today when I saw LEM give both 3 and 4 on different
pages. And I have now downloaded MacTracker as Harry suggested, for
another perspective. So are you implying that it's possible to put in
more than Apple's stated maximum? How can that be?

I couldn't when I clicked Preview from the Acrobat Reader print screen

And the minimal network just means two computers and a wireless

Late 2006 iMac sudden-death

2011-10-03 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: My late 2006 iMac (IMac Core 2 Duo 1.83 ghz/2 g RAMLion as of one
week ago/purchased September 2006) figuratively blew up yesterday morning:
screen freeze-ups, bizarre screen activity (that looked like what I'm
guessing a bad LSD trip would be like) or no booting at all, just a black
screen. (It also refused to boot from the 10.6 disc.) I had been in the
midst of adding a commercial music CD to iTunes while simultaneously
exporting an audio file from Audacity.

I did manage to get it to reboot normally, once. The audio CD import blew it
up again, this time without my doing anything else.

I took it to the local Apple store where my genius said that because it
wouldn't even bong for him, let alone begin the boot process, the logic
board was the likely culprit, with a repair/replace pricetag of about $378.
A local independent Mac repair shop quoted me about $500 (based on an
emailed description), while also saying that given its age I should replace
it and that trading in would give me some credit toward a new/second-hand
machine

Yeesh. This I do not need. So I *think* I have four choices:

   1. Do nothing; double up on my wife's computer
   2. Repair it
   3. Extract the HD and get a second-hand machine
   4. Extract the HD and get a new machine

#4 is financially out of the question. #3 is also financially out of the
question, though maybe not quite to the degree as #4. #2 may as well be
financially out of the question. #1 is logistically out of the question.

So, what I'm wondering is:

   - Do I have any other options?
   - Is it possible there's some other problem instead?
   - Would there be a way to use the thing as a display if I could find
something like a Mini or whatever to do the functional bits? Or even get at
the data on the HD from an external source?
   - What might I expect to have to pay for the repair? Is the Apple Store's
   $378 reasonable or not?
   - Do I have any other options?
   - Is anyone here handing out $100 bills? Or even a good big Scotch or
   two?
   - Do I have any other options?

I'm reluctant to buy second-hand since I feel I'd be buying someone else's
problems, and...well, I don't like any of the options I can think of.

As always my thanks in advance!

Failing router?

2011-11-23 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: My son came home from college last night, and almost immediately
told me that the router (basic Netgear wireless) is giving off a
high-pitched whine or squeal or whistle or something, which he had not
heard before. Neither my wife nor I can hear it so I have to take this on
faith. They both have complained of pretty frequent and significant
Internet slowness, too.

   1. Are these two things--noise and speed--related?
   2. Is the whine a symptom of something more problematic?
   3. Assuming it's much more cost-effective to buy another router than try
to have this one fixed, what's the conventional wisdom nowadays for brands
and capabilities? (I don't feel the need to spend boatloads of
(non-existent) cash so something under maybe $30 would be fine, I think...)

Replacing the HD

2011-11-30 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: The 1.83ghz machine below is five years old (the first of the
late-2006 core 2 duo machines) and I'm beginning to notice a minor whine
sound when it's running. I assume this is the (original 160gb) HD
demonstrating some wear, so in order to avoid a headache later on
I'm checking into replacement options. So my questions are:

   1. Is this replacement something I can do myself or would it be better
to pay someone to do so? The ifixit site has a guide but it's marked as
moderate for difficulty, so I'm glad to hear other opinions on the task.
   2. The drive type is 160 GB 7200 rpm Serial ATA drive...so will any
drive with these specs work? Or are there other constraints I need to
consider, e.g. specified as Mac-compatible? (I'd like to at
least double the capacity if my pretty limited budget can stand it.)
   3. Are there manufacturers I should seek our or avoid? I've always heard
good things about Seagate and Western Digital but beyond that I'm
   in the dark.
   4. About what might I expect to have to pay if I have someone else do
   the installation?
   5. Anything else I should keep in mind?

As always my thanks in advance!

   - Requires a Firewire connection, not USB (will FW 400 work? I don't

   - Requires being formatted a certain way (which I saw in the Help files

Right? Anything else for this part? Next,

1. CCC to your an external.
2. Boot on the external - to make sure its fully functional.

I take it I'd zero the internal at this point, and somehow set things up
so the machine boots automatically from the external. Will this happen
automatically if the internal has been zeroed, or do I need to do something
specific to boot from the external automatically?

These next steps from Dan are now moot if I'm booting from the external
(except #3):

1. Do yer HD replacement.
2. Boot on the external.
3. Use Disk Utility to zero and initialize your new internal.
4. CCC into the new internal.

 What about the following:

   - Does CCC take all partitions of the internal and put them on the
external or do I need to do that some other way? Unfortunately, I have to
retain Tiger for the time being for one app that's too old for Lion, so I
have a very small partition for that.
   - I plan to set up Time Machine on another external drive...will this
setup be OK for that? (And by the way, does Time Machine do OK going onto a
   USB external or not?)

free file-sharing service that I can (very occasionally) use for sending
around files that are too big to send via email? I’ve been using Hightail
(a/k/a YouSendIt) but the freebie version has gotten extremely restrictive
about file sizes, and as a triple-distilled cheapskate I don’t feel like
spending something like $120 a year for a service I use maybe once a month,
if that.

As always, my thanks in advance!

Converting PAL to DVD?

2015-01-07 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: I picked up a DVD while visiting England last summer, thinking
that one of our players was region-free. Well, I was wrong on that...so how
can I convert this PAL DVD to an NTSC DVD so we can watch it? I'm seeing
lots of options in a quick online search but I know nothing about the
reliability, ease of use, etc., of any of them. (FYI we also have a newer
iMac than the one listed below, which as I recall is running Yosemite.)

As always, my thanks in advance!

To do this, I *think* I have to go through a conversion process…Disk
Utility refuses to make a disk image (this is why I think the disk is
copy-protected). So what’s the simplest way to do this?

Simple is relative. The key is in understanding the individual steps
 required, I think.

 1. Physically clean the DVD with water and a soft cloth! Better to make
a clean rip than waste time listening to the DVD drive re-read track after
track after track, hoping to get it right.

 2. Prepare to break the encoding/protection. Until this is done, other
tools will simply t-rex (flap their wee hands uselessly). Do this by
 installing and launching Fairmount.
 https://github.com/pmetzger/Fairmount

 3. Mount the (now dry) DVD and wait a minute or three for Fairmount to do
 its magic.

 4. Rip the whole DVD using MacTheRipper.

 5. Test the rip by opening and playing the resulting Video_TS folder with
 VLC.

 6. (optional) Transcode the desired title(s) in the Video_TS to something
else. An mkv file containing h.264 is usually preferred because it
supports chapters and embedded subtitles etc. My current fav tool for this
is Handbrake, but sometimes I wing it with raw ffmpeg commands.
 http://handbrake.fr/

Technically, you should be able to skip steps 4 5, going directly to 6
and transcoding right off the optical media, but I’ve not had good luck
 with that.  Handbrake and Fairmount don’t always seem to get along;
Handbrake crashes etc. So I’ve found that doing things one step at a time
works best. Also, transcoding with Handbrake from a Video_TS folder on
your hard drive is much faster than re-reading the DVD. That makes it
easer to re-transcode after changing settings and such.

 HTH,
 - Dan.

I get to buy a new computer!

2015-04-22 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: The tax refund came through and I have been given permission to
replace my trusty elderly Lion machine (purchased new in September 2006;
see end of this message) with a new iMac. It's obviously been a long time,
so what do I look for? My needs are not especially taxing or unusual, I
think, but I'd like to have a sense of where I could be a bit on the
entry-level side and where I should focus on getting as much as I can. For
example, I suspect that top-of-the-line processor speed would be less
important than maxing the memory, and I don't think I need the more than
the basic screen size.

One of the things I could definitely use input on is the type of HD to
get--they're showing something called a Fusion drive, and the little I've
read about it makes it sound like a good thing, but...well, you get the
idea.

Let's set a ballpark price limit of $1,250 or so.

My thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions!

downloading stuff off the internet was faster (This faculty member was
downloading ginormous 20-30 GB DNA restriction map datasets) because, it
turned out, that disk IO was the primary bottleneck on the system.

Where storage is concerned, be aware that any late-2012 or newer iMac
has four USB 3.0 ports, as well as two Thunderbolt ports. This means really
speedy read/write access to really huge external storage devices. I’ve
played around with a 240 GB SSD inside a USB 3.0 Mac with a 3 TB external
hard disk drive, and the combination can’t be beat as a speedy, inexpensive
 consumer-level setup

Yes, I keep forgetting how insanely fast USB3 is. I helped a faculty
member set up Time Machine on her newish iMac plugged in the drive, and
told her Oh it may take up to a couple hours to finish the initial
backup. We talked about some other things for about ten minutes and it was
 done.

Unless you're really set on an iMac, I still believe that your best value
for the budget will lie in getting a good Mini system (they also have 4
USB3 and 2 thunderbolt ports), along with a third party monitor. You'll get
a larger monitor with a matte screen (no shiny glass to reflect glare!) and
lower price. Like the iMacs the memory isn't upgradeable so make sure you
get what you need up front.

I am not *at all* dead-set on an iMac, it's just that's what I've been
using for many years. The Mini+monitor idea sounds just fine with me,
although since I already have a keyboard and mouse (I use the Logitech
Trackball, M570, because of pain issues in my hand/wrist), would I really
need to replace those? I will most likely get the best internal drive I can
manage, because I've been increasingly unhappy with the molasses-like
response of the standard-issue one. Also, since I haven't bought a monitor
in probably 20 years, what suggestions do you have for models at around
$150 or so? I assume a 24-inch (diagonal?) would be fine, I don't really
need Cinerama on my desk.

Thanks again! Bill

HD capacity needs for storing audio CDs

2015-10-02 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: I'm considering transferring all my commercial audio CDs to HD
storage, and wonder if there's a rule of thumb about how many CDs would fit
onto a drive of X capacity. For example, if I had say 100 CDs that each
included 70 minutes of music, how big would the HD need to be to
accommodate all those CDs (encoded in a lossless format)? I think I would
prefer not to store them as data files since I would want to be able to
play them back via iTunes, but I'm not necessarily wedded to that idea.

Or, is there a more efficient way to do what I want to do without
compromising the audio quality? In short, what do I need to bear in mind if
I decide to transfer them all?

As always, my thanks in advance!

FW adapter choices?

Hi there: I want to connect an iSight camera to my Mini. Is there much of
any difference in connection quality between a FW-to-Thunderbolt adapter

Doesn't play in iTunes. But I put it in my wife's older iMac and it
imported into her iTunes fine (if slowly) so I just copied the files across
and I guess I'm okay. Should probably burn a new disc just on principle.

Error 36 while copying a file

2017-01-27 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: I got two DVDs last night from a friend, which include three
videos recorded last month. Two files on one DVD and one on the other. The
disc with two files copied across fine. The disc with one file kept failing
with an error 36 message. (I assume my source is a Windows user but am not
certain.) My quick search brought up these two pages among many others:

https://www.macissues.com/2015/05/25/what-to-do-about-error-36-and-other-io-errors-in-os-x/

http://osxdaily.com/2015/02/21/fix-error-code-36-finder-mac-os-x/

Are these two pages on the right track? Is there some other method I can
use to copy the file to my Mac for editing, one that avoids this error?
This is a very time-sensitive project--it must be complete by Tuesday of
next week at the very latest--and I will be very grateful for any thoughts
or suggestions on this point. Thanks!

iTunes won't burn a playlist in order

Hi there: Whenever I try to burn a playlist to CD via iTunes (12.5.5.5), it

order? As always, my thanks in advance!

Feeling very stupid about printer setup...

2016-10-04 Thread Bill Spencer

Hi there: I got a new wireless router from Verizon the other day, and now
the printer (Brother) and the new wireless network don't see each other.
Tried to troubleshoot it with my wife over the phone but can't figure it
out that way since I can't see the screen and she is not very comfortable
with this stuff. There was an add-printer-to-network setting of some sort
in there someplace but it was apparently grayed out. I can't get home to
deal with it until late tonight. I've told her to send print commands as
usual so they build up in the queue, and they will all print once I get it
straightened out...I think.

A quick word of advice on how to get the printer onto the new network will
be much appreciated. Apologies, and thanks!

Macs and viruses

2016-11-18 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: My wife has lately been getting spam emails, allegedly from her
email provider, which include links to click to resolve "problems"--you
know the drill. She has not taken the bait, but when I contacted the
provider on her behalf to triple-check that her account is still in the
clear, I got quite a lengthy sales pitch for all sorts of Mac-related
anti-virus and security stuff that they want us to buy. I have never really
worried about that sort of thing in the past, but times do change and I
thought I would see what the received wisdom is nowadays about the need for
such programs...and if there *is *a need, what to install. She's on 10.10.5
and I'm on 10.11.something.

(FYI, she does not want to switch email providers, even to save the $100 or
so a year, because of the understandable headache of notifying everyone,
changing her business cards, her website, etc., and needing/wanting to keep
her old messages in one place.)

As always, my thanks in advance!

How to keep the thing from going to sleep

2016-11-01 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: I was using Audacity to digitize a couple of LPs over the
weekend, and discovered the hard way that when the Mini goes to sleep
Audacity stops capturing the signal. I went into system prefs and told the
display not to sleep, and told the energy saver to stay awake, but neither
change worked...I still had to jiggle the mouse from time to time to be
sure it all went correctly. What was I missing? I (obviously) don't really
want to have to babysit the system like that in the future when doing this.
As always, my thanks in advance!

Can't import a CD to iTunes

2016-10-14 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: Every once in a while my little Samsung CD drive won't be able to
read a disc for import into iTunes. When it does happen (not very often),
if I unplug its USB connector from the Mini and then reinsert it, all's
well, but now I've got a disc where even that doesn't work. Any ideas on
why, or on how to resolve this? As always, my thanks in advance!

Re: MediaHuman Audio Converter?

2017-01-05 Thread Bill Spencer
Yes, I use Audacity all the time...but not when the FLAC has been "encoded"
(is that the right word?) via a cue sheet. In that case it just gives me
one immense track, not the individual tracks on the disc itself. If I
double-click the cue file, it opens in VLC, which then has some
mind-numbing process for converting the cued track(s) to something else,
but I cannot make head or tail out of how to do so...you hit one of those
later zero-birthdays and this is what you get, apparently. Bill

How to create a "video" out of an audio clip and a still image?

2016-12-27 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: I have a radio clip from around 2000 that I want to post on
YouTube...but I obviously have to make it into a "video" file first. So I
found a still image to use (I've seen plenty of such on YT), but durn if I
cannot figure out how to get iMovie to display the image for the full 12
minutes it takes to play the audio. I have never used iMovie before and the
tutorials I have come across up to now are not helping at all. Anyone have
advice on how I can proceed? As always, my thanks in advance!

Re: Touch-screen monitor question

2017-03-31 Thread Bill Spencer
Thanks, Bruce, as always! Unfortunately, my wife does not want a wide
screen; she wants a 19" at either 4:3 or 5:4. I think this stems from the
amount of linear space available in the very unusual spot where the monitor
will live. This seems to limit the choices a good deal from what I can
gather. Based on that Newegg search it seems that +/- $500 is the lowest
price we'll find...? Bill

FaceTime/iSight question(s)

2017-04-22 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: I am just now beginning to experiment with using FaceTime with
the machine below; I bought a second-hand iSight camera not long ago to use
with it, but am baffled by some things. So I'm sorry to ask what may well
be obvious questions, but...well, here goes.

   - The attached screen shot shows the message about no camera being
available etc., but the camera is there, the computer shows me moving
around on-screen, the little green light is lit, and I can't find any
on-off switch to turn it on. What's up with that?
   - I'm apparently supposed to enter my Apple ID and password in order to
activate FT but I cannot for the life of me find where to do so.
   - Are there network configurations I need to set to use FT? I don't see
any but maybe that's part of the issue.
   - Am I right in remembering that the camera has a built-in microphone?
   - My parents' iPad is what I tried calling; I heard the dialing/ringing
sound but they show no indication that I tried contact them. I assume that
will change once I get the above resolved...?

As always, my thanks in advance!

Touch-screen monitor question

2017-03-31 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: What choices are there for a 19" 5:4 (or could be 4:3...)
touchscreen monitor? Is there anything below around $500? That's all I can
find but I may well be looking in the wrong places or the wrong ways. As
always, my thanks in advance!

Re: Extracting audio-only from DVD audio

2017-10-18 Thread Bill Spencer
Thank you for the link...but it seems to be in French, and thus not
accessible to my mono-lingual brain. FYI the recording specifies 5.1 Dolby
Digital AC-3 and DTS Surround Sound, and that it plays on all DVD-Audio and
DVD-Video players. Am I out of luck?

Thanks! Bill

I should have specified: the Mini's HD is 100% SSD...and I also thought
that the machine was sealed and could not be upgraded. But maybe I'm
thinking of something else. If it can be upgraded then I might consider
doing so later on (that $100 just isn't in the picture for now).

The backup drive isn't MS-DOS so on that score it should be okay. But I
have a dim memory that because the backup is partitioned (one for the HD,
one for the iTunes drive) Time Machine wouldn't work...something about
having to select the "drive" at the time of backup, but again it's been
quite a while so I'm not sure.

He is on 10.10.5, and my version of TeamViewer says his is too old. Does
that mean I have to back out to a prior version...is that what you're
saying? Sorry to be dense, but...well, there we are. Thanks! Bill

Mail vs. Gmail...?

2020-08-07 Thread Bill Spencer
Hi there: In the past month or so, I've begun having some problems with
Mail and its interaction with my Gmail account:

   - When I launch Mail, it brings in the messages from Gmail as usual but
after I open them or delete them, they don't get marked as opened or
deleted in the Gmail web interface. If I select the "unread" ones there and
mark them as read, they switch back to unread the next time I go in. Mail
will show them as read, but the web interface doesn't. This only applies to
messages received on or after the 4th of August.
   - The items in the Spam folder in the web interface don't get brought
across to Mail at all (with very few exceptions). Not that I care so much
about my spam collection, but I want to see what's there in case something
   got flagged that shouldn't have.
   - Some messages, but not all, refuse to display their content when I
open them in Mail--I just get the header and a blank screen, so I have no
idea what they contain. Occasionally if I close and reopen them repeatedly
the content eventually appears, but not very often. They display fine in
the web interface, just not in Mail.

The web interface issues apply regardless of whether I use Chrome or Safari.

Any ideas will be gratefully received. Thanks in advance!

OSX version is 10.15.6--is there more we need to know? IMAP is set as
account access, and I can't find anything about synching spam (or other)
folders but there was never an issue until a few weeks ago.

Re: Time Machine configuration...?

2021-01-17 Thread Bill Spencer
Thank you both for this information. Unfortunately I am not in a position
to buy another external HD so I will have to manage with what I have. In
reading through your comments, I realized that there's no need for the
iTunes backup to be in a separate partition (at least, I think this is so);
I have no idea why I set things up that way originally. (I continue to
refer to "iTunes" even though it's not called that anymore...one cannot
usually teach old dogs new tricks.) Here's what I think I'll do, subject to
your better advice:

   1. Reformat the backup drive to APFS without a partition
   2. Set up Time Machine to back up the main HD to the newly-formatted
   external HD
   3. Copy the contents of the current iTunes drive to the newly-formatted
   backup drive.
   4. Reformat the current iTunes drive to the new format
   5. Copy the backed-up iTunes material back to the newly-reformatted
   external iTunes drive
   6. Set up Time Machine to back up the external iTunes drive to the
   newly-formatted external HD

Will this approach work? Or, what do I need to change in that proposal?
Again, my thanks for your input. Bill
