Hi Travis,

We've been running this on our mail server for a week and plan on
putting it on a couple of other production machines this week. I'm
not going to recommend that you install on a production box just yet.
Please let us know if you run into any problems in your test environment.

I appreciate the answer but dont see how it relates to the question.

Do you know if there are any known hacks or problem with webmail?

 1. Not a ton of messages when out- less then 500.
 2. The users reply address and name was updates.
 3. Only a few failed logins for the account.

I am pretty sure that the users computer got compromised and they got
 his info that way.
The IP used to connect came from Nigeria.

Such a compromise is usually due to easily-guessed passwords (same as
username, 'password', etc.). Once you've got that info, sending a ton
of messages using HTTP scripting -- not the webmail per se -- is a
 cinch.

Have you spoken with the user to be sure this was not the case? Users
can sometimes be embarrassed to admit it.

We're abandoning Imail for SmarterMail for very mush the same reasons. We
use Vamsoft's ORF in front of SmarterMail for the greylisting component
which is excellent by the way.

As for Sniffer and Declude they are both good but their pricing is forcing
us to review their real benefits, we have to ensure we offer customers good
value for money.

Yes, switched to SmarterMail. I don't want to bad mouth Ipswitch here, but
it was mostly a cost issue. We were using an old version of Declude and had
a Message Sniffer subscription. I really like Sniffer, but the price nearly
doubled this year and we can't afford it (it alone costs more than
SmarterMail). The Ipswitch premium anti-spam product was far too expensive.

SmarterMail the ability to use all the RBLs and has SpamAssassin and ClamAV
out of the box. We switched over the weekend and greylisting has been the
biggest benefit. We've had about an 80% reduction in spam and we haven't
done any tuning yet. I'm loving it so far. The real time reporting io t
great too... I actually know what the server is doing.

Anyone can feel free to contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want more
details.

Again, I don't want to use this list to bad mouth Ipswitch. SmarterMail is
not a perfect product by any means, but for us it seems to be great so far.

Signing off this list - or at least trying real hard to.

Re: [IMail Forum] unsubscribe

2007-07-31 Thread Joe Wolf

The real time reporting io t great too... I actually know what the server is doing.

Anyone can feel free to contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want more details.
Again, I don't want to use this list to bad mouth Ipswitch. SmarterMail is
not a perfect product by any means, but for us it seems to be great so far.

Signing off this list - or at least trying real hard to.

Yes, mail2.ourdomain.com is our backup mail server / backup MX. I know it
shouldn't be accepting mail until called upon, and that's what I'm worried

Thanks for your comments. So does this mean that we would do away with
mail2.ourdomain.com?

is that your backup mailserver and backup MX? the backup mail server
shouldn't accepting mail until the primary goes down.

I understand all of the benefits that you mention about a front line
of defense. I just recall seeing the errors when doing dnsreports,
etc. when there is only one MX record.

I had been seriously contemplating setting up an ASSP box, so I would
assume that would serve the same purpose as IMGate.

yes,

   I'm not familiar with IMGate,
and am certainly not married to going that route. I just understood it
to be cheap (free) and can run on a lightweight box.

Yes. A great combination is IMGate out front catching all the worst stuff
and giving in/outbound redunancy and (pre-fetching) DNS, and then the heavey
content-filtering (anti-spam/virus from
Imail/delclude/assp/sniffer/whatever) on the Imail box.

I'm making improvements now to IMGate to add weighted scoring but always in
IMGate's original philosophy of doing as much rejecting as possible before
the DATA command.

I am running Imail 2006.1. When I go to Global user changes and select
allow web access and Yes it takes a minute or two and completes the
save. However, some user calls and are denied access. When I check to
see if Allow web access is checked for them it is not. Is anyone else

That's too bad, we're missing more and more quality
people from this list. Should be a BIG red flag to Ipswitch regardless
of what other software you're going to. I don't care how many thousands
of install of imail there are if the core group is moving on then this
is a bad thing because I don't see too many replacements coming along.

You'll be missed.

Take care,

Bill

Do three things.

1. It must be plain text.
2. It must have no signature - no nothing
3. You can not have stationery at all.

I just unsubscribed you, but the message on the page states that the change
is NOT immediate, it might take a day and if you don't receive a confirming
message in a day (in this case by Monday), then call ipswitch.

RE: [IMail Forum] Unsubscribe from List

2004-10-04 Thread Mike Odryna
You are not the only one. I have tried on numerous occasions to
unsubscribe. Ipswitch tells me that my address was not on any list. If
I tried to post to the list it would say that my email address was not
allowed to post any messages since I am not subscribed.

So I decided to create a rule to put all the mail into the deleted items
folder.

After a while I needed to post to the list to get some help. Since then
I get two emails for every post. I sent email to Ipswitch support last
week and I still have not received any response short of a ticket
number.

IPSWITCH Please help.

RE: [IMail Forum] Unsubscribe from List

2004-10-04 Thread Mike Odryna
I believe I may have found my problem. We had gone to a new exchange
server a couple of months back. During setup, inadvertently my default
reply address was set to an address different than the one I use.

What I believe happened is that when I replied to the subscribe message
the list server used the erroneous default reply address. Instead of
the one that the subscription confirmations email was sent to.

I don't know if that is by design, but it seems to be the only plausible
explanation.

I just unsubscribed using the erroneous address from before, and now I
am only getting one email for each post.

Try this:
Send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
In the body, on the first line put: Unsubscribe imail_Forum Your Name

Make sure the address you are sending from is the same exact same
address that you are subscribed with.

(1) Do I need to have a fix IP address from my ISP in order to set up
IMAIL for internet mailing?

that´s the best and simplest way. mail servers send to ip addresses found
in DNS, so fixed ip addresses for the Imail box is nearly always how Imail
is set up.

(2) If I am using periodic dial up connection to internet, what setting do
I need in order to send and received mail from my ISP mail server and
subsequently distributed to the local mail box?

This is covered in the IMail user's guide downloadable from the ipswitch

As long as you map a drive letter, you are using NETBIOS, either by IP or
name (which is resolved to an IP address to make the connection unless you
have NETBEUI running).

NETBIOS should***never*** be bound to an interface exposed to the
world, firewall or not. SMTP is tough to expoit, FTP, quite a bit easier,
HTTP is easier still.

If NETBIOS is available on the external interface, then your system is open
to the next smartypants who finds a way to overrun a buffer and execute a
bit of code.
It is quite easy to unbind NETBIOS from a specific NIC, but as long as it is
running, even on the inside only, you have exposed your internal network to
someone who gains control of your server. I agree that layering is the only
way to approach the problem _ Firewall _ NAT _

[IMail Forum] Unsubscribe Template or Hyperlink

2001-03-08 Thread Richard M. Neuman

I would like to give email recipients the ability to unsubscribe from a list
either through one of two options.

Does anyone have a script that would have a hyperlink embedded in the email
that they would:
1. Create a new mail message
2. Grab their email address from the header
3. Send it back to the Imailsrv with the proper formatting including the
unsubscribe code and the list name

-OR-

A web page form that would reside in Imail that would just require them to
enter their email address, but the list name would be preprogrammed.

Please note I am NOT running IIS.

Thanks

Re: [IMail Forum] unsubscribe using the form

1999-09-19 Thread Daniel Donnelly

Gary,

The form at our site sends email as if it were from the user, so it
does add and remove user entries form both files. If users.txt does
not contain the users 'email address user_name' (no''), then they
cannot be removed by email.

There have been some changes to the List Server, but I'm not exactly
sure what form the user.txt must be in now. I think the requirement
for has been removed. There is no absolute need to have
'user_name' in the file.

Re: [IMail Forum] unsubscribe using the form

1999-09-18 Thread Bill James

Gary,

I'm guessing at their setup (Ipswitch) but according to the manual all
email addresses for lists are in the user.1st and must reside there for the
list. So it stands to reason that the email address of the person
unsubscribing will be removed from that file.

If they want to unsubscribe on their own then you need to allow
"unsubscribe based on subject" checked off at the list admin.

I have setup an alias that when an email is sent to it it adds the return
address from the original sender. If they put in unsubscribe in the subject
then it deletes their address from the list...BUT they must be sending from
the original email address.

This is all covered in the manual

Bill

Re: [IMail Forum] unsubscribe using the form

1999-09-18 Thread Gary Mauer

This is all covered in the manual

I've read the manual, and I'm pretty sure these questions relate to stuff
that didn't make it into the manual.

I'm guessing at their setup (Ipswitch) but according to the manual all
email addresses for lists are in the user.1st and must reside there for
the
list. So it stands to reason that the email address of the person
unsubscribing will be removed from that file.

My first question was phrased wrong - I apologize.
It actually had to do with whether unsubscribing via the imailsrv.pl form
and unsubscribe commands sent directly to the listserver work at all, if the
subscriber's name does not appear in users.txt

What people are really trying to do is get IMail to take them off of
users.txt, AND users.lst.

In other words, if I have subs subscribed everyone so far via the web admin
pages for my list, or by editing users.lst via FTP - in which case,
users.TXT is empty - then no one can unsubscribe themselves, can they?

My second question had to do with whether users.TXT would work if it
contained only addresses - that is, if there is no name at all.

I'm looking at "repairing" users.txt - by adding addresses or names and
addresses - IF that's what it takes to allow people to unsubscribe
themselves.

I have setup an alias that when an email is sent to it it adds the return
address from the original sender. If they put in unsubscribe in the
subject
then it deletes their address from the list...BUT they must be sending
from
 the original email address.

Hmm, are you saying that the program alias must be set up, for
"allow unsubscribe based on subject" to work?
I thought that the program alias was something the list owner used - to
handle unsubscribe requests by forwarding them to the alias?

...BUT they must be sending from
 the original email address.

Original name, too?

If they want to unsubscribe on their own then you need to allow
"unsubscribe based on subject" checked off at the list admin.

then it deletes their address from the list...BUT they must be sending

Follow the handy link at the bottom of every list message :)

Does the form at that page remove subscribers from
  users.lst ? - or just from users.txt?

I'm sure the IMail Forum list has no one in users.lst, but all of mine
are
  there.

If I have added subscriber addresses via the web admin page, or via
ftp -
 to
users.lst, THEY cannot unsubscribe themselves, can they?

Would users.txt work if I cut all the addresses from users.lst, and
pasted
them to users.txt - without the names?
