Prashant has finally sorted this out. The plant seen here pictures agrees quite well with the description of Ipomoea laciniata: -- Stem slender, creeping or twining, angled twisted, glabrous. Leaves 1-2 in. in dia, subdigitate, 5-7 partite; segments elliptic or linear, serrate or pinnatifid, the teeth unequal, mucronate; petioles 1/2 - 1 inch long with stipule like axxilary leaves. Sepals 1/4 to 1/3 in. long, subequal, elliptic, mucronate, fleshy, ribbed and wrinkled on the back, glabrous. Corolla White; tube narrow, cylindric, reaching 2 inch long by 1/8 inch in dia; limb flat, spreading, 1 to 1.5 in. in dia.. Anthers scareely exserted. --- Shrikant ji had suggested I. diversifolia which, he said, could be a synonym of I. laciniata. The internet is flooded with pictures and videos of this plant which looks like a seed/grain having sprounted under a shaded condition, but much more delicate and thinner. When you try to search Udumbara plant with botanical name, Ficus racemosa comes in, but this tiny plant is apparently totally different. This is the gist I got from one website: Udumbara, a legendary flower that is believed to blossom once every three millennia to symbolize the arrival of the Noble King of Falun (Law Wheel), was seen in Batam, Indonesia on April. 30, 2008. This is the first such finding in Indonesia. The world's first report of Udumbara was in 1997 in Korea. Previously, witnesses of Udumbara were reported in Australia, Korea, mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. The Udumbara sprouted from Buddha Statues, bricks, glasses, iron tubes, and plant leaves. There is not a known match of this species of plant life to date. Delicate flowers are white in color and grow suspended on threadlike stalks. The stems are slimmer than human hair. Altogether Udumbara appeared on eight leaves. Some leaves had 30 little buds on them, some had 40, 50, or 60 buds. According to Etymology in Huilin's YinYi, a Buddhist scripture from China's Tang Dynasty in the early 9th century, Udumbara appears in Heaven. It does not belong to the human world. Only the mighty virtue of a reincarnating Tathagata or the appearance of the Noble King of Falun would cause Udumbara to appear in the human world. Dear Tanay I have not been able to comprehend the point of disagreement. The plant was uploaded as Abutilon. I disputed this on the basis of presence of epicalyx. Vijayasankar ji first identified it as Melhania (tentatively M. magnolifolia). Shrikant ji identified it as M. tomentosa, which you supported. You had also provided link to Eflora of Pakistan which regards M. tomentosa as synonym of M. futteyporensis, which Satish ji rightly concluded. [efloraofindia:28800] AN ERNEST REQUEST FROM TANAY BOSE
Dear Members of e-flora of India, I am among the newest manager of this largest Plant Taxonomy group in India. I will thank Mr. Dinesh Valke for introducing me to this group and also Mr. Garg who thought that I have enough potential to be a manager / moderator of this group. This group is a splendid assemblage of people from India and few from abroad who show dedicated interest in conservation identification of Indian flora. During my tenure of association with this group I have tried my level best to participate where ever possible , but it doesn’t hurt me to say that my knowledge is stipulated and I have many things to learn from this group and their member, less to produce from my side. All the members has well established and have dedicated decades for the development of Plant Science. The point that I will like to emphasize over here is that angiospermic plants do comprise a large part of the Indian flora but there are several other plant groups whose presence can never be disagreed. I will personally request all the members of the group to please post photos, articles and identification queries regarding Algae, Fungi, Lichens, Gymnosperms, Pteridophytes as well as Bryophytes. You all make a lot of touring and expeditions while taking photos of angiospermic plant if you come across any members of the above mention plant groups please spend a little time and take few photos of them. This information will not only intensify our knowledge but will also help us to spread the mythical words of conservation and will show depict the richness of Indian flora. I hope all the members will agree with my comments and will make their best efforts to broaden our knowledge about the flora of India. “WHAT YOU CONSERVE IS WHAT YOU EARN” Regards Tanay Bose -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups efloraofindia group.
