That could very well be the case. NOAA is a federal agency, so its
stations would fall outside FCC jurisdiction. I know I've heard IDs
from the one in Seattle, but I don't recall if I've heard any recently.

NOAA radio stations do ID. The one in Astoria is KEC91. Many of the HAR
stations along the Oregon coast seem to run non-stop NOAA broadcasts.
They do ID, but you hear the NOAA station ID more often. Is the FCC
saying that the NOAA broadcasts are illegal, being run on TIS stations?
If so, there are
I was curious because the owner of ABDX (another DX list for those who don't
know already) asked me what WX stations I could hear from this location. The
San Francisco area one on 162.4 was strong but did not ID (including TOH) and
the Monterey one on 162.55 also did not ID. The 162.475
Thanks Martin. Great. I look forward to the rest of your dial. You did
not show IBOC on 820/840 from 830 Orange. Are they not using IBOC any
longer? When I was in Rancho Mirage in 04, their IBOC hash wiped out 820

As I have been getting older through the years, I have moved from music
to talk also. I used to listen to talk on KGO, but I would always move
back to a good Top 40 station with a lot of RB. KSWB Seaside plays a
good mix of oldies now, as well as KITI Chehalis WA. I find myself
listening
I know the one in New York City on 162.55 ids as I was listening to it
recently.
As far as TIS stations go, I wonder if they run these loops just to keep the
frequency for the state or if they just put them on the air and really in
the end don't care unless they get a visit or a violation notice

The audio is not fed down or recorded on a phone line, it comes from a

All federal government stations are assigned call signs or ID's -- that are
required to be used. Even the local FBI uses it's call signs. The FCC
offices -- have call signs -- but use a Station ID in place of a call sign.

Mike,
The Astoria TIS on 1650 is located up on a telephone pole with the whip
going up from the tx box. It is off the ground far enough and right on
the highway going into Astoria that stealing it would be very hard to
do. Their ground system goes right into Youngs Bay so they get out very
well.
No audio heard this morning from the TP region. Listened from 1105-1245 ut.
Weak carriers, the strongest here was level 5 (HLAZ 1566). Long-wave was dead.

Bill,
Last year I heard my first TP of the season on 7-20. It was HLAZ 1566.
I guess that you will be getting TP audio soon. Going to try and QSL some of
the TP's this season. Have the recorders on the computers to send off clips
without having to use the old cassette player.
Dennis,
The local TIS on 530 in Ridgefield. WA is running an open carrier. Have not
heard audio in days. Noticed while driving to Seattle last week that Castle
Rock has a TIS transmitter/antenna on the Northbound on ramp to I-5. It was
not operating. The same setup that Ridgefield uses on the

So far I have heard no TP audio or carriers this year. At this time of the
year I have a lot of noise from t-storms. I have been working on my ground for
my EWE by adding water in the berm that is around the ground rods. We also had
close to 4 inches of rain in the last 10 days
Keep in mind that most TIS stations are designed for short distance
operation. Most TIS stations have a very minimal ground system that is
mostly for static/lightning dissipation rather than for counterpoise
purposes. I have inspected well over 100 TIS installations up close and
only a couple had

The DFW TIS used 60 watts if I recall and were easy here in IL as there
wasn't much of anything on those channels then to QRM then.

Like the Fort Lewis WA TIS on 1500. According to reports from several
Puget Sound DXers, plus even the v/s of my QSL, they hardly even cover
Ft. Lewis. I find it amazing that I hear it as often as I do. I like
going after flea power TIS stations. They are fun to hear and most QSL

Concentrating on this stuff as opposed to any problems with any

Anyone remember WPAM217 from Channelview, Texas on 1620 kHz? They were
somehow connected with the oil/petroleum industry, and were pretty much
heard coast to coast in 1993 running a continuous tape loop. I tried for a
QSL but never heard back from them. Patrick, did you or anyone else verify

In an earlier posting I asked if anyone knew anything about a long-time
mystery off mine, R. Musica, a station noted 11/14/04, 2200 w/apparent

The VHF NOAA station here in Astoria IDs all of the time as NOAA Radio
KEC91 in Astoria Oregon So when an AM tis/HAR relays them, you get the
NOAA radio IDs much more often than the TIS ID. At least around here. If
you can hear the TIS long enough, like a local one, they do ID too. NOAA
just IDs

KSLM indeed was a fine radio station, probably the best in the Willamette
Valley outside of Portland, in the '40s and '50s when I lived in Corvallis. The
fellow who broke me into radio, Ted Carlson, then at KCOV-1240 as a
salesman-sportscaster, moved to KSLM in that capacity in the mid-1950s
Jim,
Did you try a follow up? They replied, but I cannot remember I phoned
them first to get an address. Too many years back. I don't know if they
are still on the air, but if they are, you might try again. If you need
the v/s or address, let me know.

Well dern - I guess I should have tried a f/up. I sent them a report but

There are many government workers on this list and we DXers have to stop

So please let's just say nice things about everybody and be friends.

There are some large synchronised multi-transmitter TIS systems in TX
and other states. The County of Fort Bend TX has a system with 10 fixed

I went over and dug out the QSL for WPAM217 from October 1994. The

I'll try to finish the rest of the band another weekend day. I went back to
hear ID's on some of the stations to make sure I didn't guess wrong.
