Hello, and welcome to the latest news from the place where popular
culture, nostalgia and radio heritage collide!
Hi,
I have published a report on the recent LEM278 DXpedition to Lemmenjoki
in Finland's Arctic North. Lots of reindeer, but even more radio
stations. Conditions on the AM band were pretty good, with many
interesting catches especially from the Americas. Check out the details

Dave,
Pre-amps are often used to boost antenna input. A good one is made by DX
Engineering, the RPA-1. I use it occasionally. There are many designs
posted on the net for diy adventures. However, some designs are better than
others as far as noise making. If you live in an electrically noisy
Thanks for the model number, Gil,
Yes I did notice an increase in noise with the preamp that went with my
old Sanserino loop but more often than not the increase in signal won
out. In fact, being a casual MW DX'er then like now, I added SEVEN new
stations to my log within two hours of stringing
***Congrats on State 40, Rob.*** I've been stuck at 37 in the overall
log, since adding NJ on a DX test a few years back. I am close on
matching the number of ULR states to the number of overall states,
with the ULR @ 32. I've logged SD many times on the overall but zilch
on the ULR one. ND
I read on one of the WTFDA lists (from an Saul via the NRC list) that MN
DX'er Paul LaFreniere passed away, last month. This is the first that
I've heard of this.
Godspeed, Paul!

Listened from 1325-1433 utc. Good morning at this inland location.
1134 kHz down, far better than channels above 1134. China CRN1 1134
is now the most common CRN1 station heard here. Took over from CRN1 1593.
DPR Korea station on 657 kHz has improved this season, but not heard this
morning
He would have been two years ahead of Bob Dylan at Hibbing HS!

Thanks David,
What a shock, I am very saddened to hear this. Even though he was about 700
miles from me, I enjoyed reading his postings, as many his loggings were often
heard at my location.
My prayers go out to him and his family.

Listened from 1250-1355 ut and the conditions were very good and I think that
they were the best so far this year. Carriers were heard on the top and bottom
of the band but as Dennis siad they were the best on the lower part of the
band. I did hear a carrier on 1134 at 1320 ut with local

Hello All,
What sounded like a modest band prior to 1400 suddenly came alive with
strong Asiatic signals, including the best signals yet this season on 792, 891
and 1125 kHz.
792 kHz was very strong at 1415 with both China-Shanghai and Thailand,

I am so sorry to hear this. I had wondered, as I had not seen his
postings in sometime. My prayers go out to his family.

Fabulous report, Gary...
I'm sorry to say that I've yet to reattach loop heads, etc. for my
antennas, so I slept in on a very good Asian morning. I'd love to
have both 891 and 792 MP3s... for obvious reaspons, especially as 792
is concerned :)

I am considering buying one of those reel-in type antennas for use with my
Radio Shack DX-398 portable. I found the following on Ebay, with the brand
name Radios4U.
It looks to be a copy of the Sangean ANT-60 antenna. Does anyone know anything
about this brand/type? Perhaps it's the same
Hi,
Radios4U is a reputable guy. I have received things from him in the past.
no issues.
My guess is that these reel-ins are all made by the same company and then
they brand them for whoever wants to distribute them. Radio Shack used to
sell them but not sure if they do anymore.
It would be a
Oh my, bad mistake this morning, didn't start listening until 1408UT, and the
band was boiling. You get a feel for how the band is, which stations are
likely to be heard on a given channel, and they just get more readable as
conditions improve, and if you're lucky, something unusual will
As others have noted, a pretty decent morning. Highlights for me:
- Russians on 549 and 576, with 549 having some good clear audio
- JOCR on 558 was the best it's been this season
- NHK on 648, again for first time this season
- Someone mixing with the regular Korean on 711
- For the first
As was reported elsewhere, Thursday morning showed significant
improvement from our first three days down in Grayland. With Guy's
new QDFA antenna working 100% finally, I'd expect some very nice
loggings when he finishes reviewing all of his Perseus recordings.
Since I still do things the old
