Re: [IRCA] BC TAs

2009-10-07 Thread Guy Atkins
I just returned home from being out for the evening, and all the TA action
must be gone. I don't find any hets or 9 kHz signals at 0555 except a
presumed Tahiti on 738.

I would have suspected 1215 Absolute Radio would be in at least a het, as
it's their local SR right now, but not even a trace showing with the zoom
tool of Perseus.

Absolute Radio is at fair/good levels. The best I've heard them this

Guy,

You missed a good evening. I did not get into it until a hour or so ago.
Hets all over the dial. I best I have heard in sometime, but not as much
audio here as up North. Switzerland 765 Iceland 189 were the best. I
never did get much out of 747 though.

OK, a new country here! Faroes is #61. Wahoo!

Right now , 0229 EDT / 0629z the program is very distinctive, a woman

In Newfoundland I've usually noted this with continuous music. Nice to get

[IRCA] TAs heard

2009-10-07 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Group:

Plenty of TA carriers heard here across the band. Some had audio, tho many were
too faint to ID. A few were a little stronger so I was able to ID them. The UK
on 1053 and 1215, France on 1557 and 1377, Croatia 1134, Egypt on 819 and 774.
774 was parallel to 819 and new here. Nothing on LW.

First good TA opening heard here in more than a year. All signals were heard on
both EWEs.

[IRCA] TP for 7Oct09 from Victoria

2009-10-07 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Monitored today from 13:20 and past 14:15. If there's any doubt that there
might be a connection between TA and TP propagation, forget it. After the best
TA night in over a year last night, this morning, initially at least was a real
disappointment. Signals were way down, until 14:00 when they really picked
up to more normal levels. I don't have time to analyze the band after 14:00
yet, but as I type this, 774 NHK2 is at armchair level. Highlight was the
Mayak transmitter on 666 // 576 which should be in Komsomolsk. Have to run.
I'll complete things later today...Walt

[IRCA] TP DX 10/07-Bangladesh 693?

2009-10-07 Thread Patrick Martin
Not a bad morning..Stil no Filipinos I could find...But lots of JJ/KK/CC
in and one interesting frequency, 693 khzAt around 1420, I could
hear Indian type film music way under JOAB. It was there until after
1430, but before 1430, there was a pause in the music and a low pitched
man said something in an unid language. Very likely this was Bangladesh
running 1000 KW. I have not heard Bangladesh since 1994 when I logged
QSL'd 558. Gee, I hope for a return to those days! I tried for India
on 864 and Nepal 792, but no luck there as yet. I did find something
unid way behind the jumble on 1134 at 1440 with JJ/KK, that may be
Calcutta. I never logged that one ether. 864 1566 are the only Indians
heard here. I only QSL'd 864. I will keep checking 693. This is
interesting to say least! With 1000 KW, it should be possible, as it is
not all that far from Thailand to Bangladesh and both run 1000 KW.
However, the propagation did not match the type I had in 93/94. That
propagation started out like FM skip, as early on it was good in
Northern Asia, then moved down to the Philippines, across Southern Asia
and then brought in Central Asians. Very odd conditions for MW, a bit of
bending. In all of my years at the dials I have never heard that
again. But I sure would love a repeat of it!

[IRCA] TP for 7 Oct 09 from Victoria - pretty normal

2009-10-07 Thread cafe
Like Walter said... There is no connection between TA
and TP conditions.
This AM was fair to good for me - with some hot spots:

531 - Japan - better than average copy of this 2nd tier station - 13:55
540 - China - YL in a muddy mix of other stations
558 - JJ at a 7
567 - JJ at a 8
576 - nothing when I passed by...
585 - Japan - 6
594 - Japan 8 to 9 (with what sounded like Jamming... [on the Sony MD]) 13:59
603 - Choral music in the jumble
612 - zip
621 - trace audio
639 - CC
657 - Korean... in the clear! Unusual for me as this is splatter heaven - 14:02
666 - JJ
675 - Vietnam 8.5
702 - KK - not so common that this is fully readable 14:03
747 - JJ well below average levels
756 - CC 14:05
774 - JJ - Chinese at armchair levels and being jammed - kid you not, I am
digging out the MD recording of this.
828 - Average JJ
936 - Average CC 6/7
945 - CC
963 - zip
972 - better than average
1017 - Korean - have not heard KK here since Hawaii - 14:12

About here I powered down and jumped in the shower.

Recordings later -

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-7.. Pretty Good

2009-10-07 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

After last night's TA action, everyone was probably hoping for a legendary
TP opening-- but it certainly fell far short of that. Even without the
legendary opening, conditions here (on the 9' box loop) seemed fairly good,
despite the lackluster reports from Walt and Dennis.

756-CNR1 was strong enough for a nice Chinese ID at 1400, which was
Ultralight TP logging #97 here. It was mixing with the KBS co-channel around
1405, but neither station was at very strong levels. Like Walt reported, this
756-CNR1 station seems to be undermodulated, having a large carrier but puny
audio.

1107 had audio from a TP for the first time here, but it was too weak to
ID the language. 1134 had the KBS station again, not the Chinese as reported
by Dennis. Many of the other frequencies had TP's at weaker than normal
levels, but in general the band had its interesting moments. The new 9' box
loop has received 5 new Ultralight TP's in 5 days, plus numerous UnID Chinese
stations. I need to think up a sneaky way to take one of these monsters to
Grayland :-)

[IRCA] Good Morning Late: Orcas Isl. Oct 7

2009-10-07 Thread John H. Bryant
Things have gotten late enough that I've quit setting the alarm so I
did not get to the dials until 1403 this AM. (LSR=1420 UTC). Still,
it was a very good morning, North Korea 657 seems to have been
working on their transmitter: a nice clean signal this AM. 666 was
Chinese this AM at 1410, all by itself, rather than the normal JJ. By
1420 they were equal. 828 was all Beijing News (presumed) as I glided
by and 891 was Thailand by itself and doing very well.

1107 was Japanese at a moderate level, mixing with whatever has been
on that channel with the trashy distorted signal. 1350 was JOER at
such a dopminant level that I was originally listening in English
and did not recognize this old friend.

There was a second station in with VOA on 1575. The new one was
mostly carriuer and was on 1574.96 or so. That bears watching.

So, it was a really nice morning here.

Re: [IRCA] Powerline noise

2009-10-07 Thread Patrick Martin
Update on my powerline noise. The Bonneville Power people are here along
with PPL and they are looking for it. Unfortunately no noise to speak
of today. Isn't that always the case? Anyway, I went around with them
checking poles and we found a couple that are suspect. They are supposed
to get back with me later today. One pole wire looked really suspect
with lose wires. They are both in the area of the noise. But when we had
the East wind and warm temps it was noisy. Today partly cloudy and cool.
But the sun is out, so there is hope. They will knock some wires around
if it doesn't show up on its' own. These are three experts. The
Bonneville guy has been checking out noise issues for over 40 years. I
am keeping my fingers crossed they get it this time around.

[IRCA] 531 Faroes!

2009-10-07 Thread Marc DeLorenzo

Jim-

Congrats and welcome to the Heard The Faroe Islands From The USA Club!  Ditto
to MIke Bugaj.

As for talk, oh yeah, they can talk your ear off!  If you haven't already,
listen to my clips at the link below.  I've heard them yak for 45 minutes
straight with no music whatsoever.  After 2300 UTC or so, they play pretty much
continuous music.

Intersetingly, at my location, they are usually the first ataion to fade in on
531 followed by Spain Algeria.   Have also heard a fourth station on the
channel recently and I suspect Iran.  Very somber programming.

OK, a new country here!  Faroes is #61.  Wahoo!

Right now , 0229 EDT / 0629z the program is very distinctive, a woman
talking with a child // web audio.

In Newfoundland I've usually noted this with continuous music.  Nice to get
some talking.  Seems about 8-10 seconds delayed.

Go get'em you Oregon Territory DXers.

2009-10-07 Thread David Faulkner
Yup.  The signal is much better now.  ID's as Cincinnati's Newstalk 1160,
calls sound like WTRC or WTRP but I can't be completely sure.  I've noted
spots by Dave Ramsey for the Washington Times Weekly.  They carry Dr. Laura
from 5-8 p.m., I think the TOH news was SRN.  So it would appear to be a
shift to conservative talk perhaps to many of the shows not currently carried
by WKRC-550.

Patrick,
I'm glad they found it. I remember battling power line noise for five months
in 1972, and I'm not sure anyone found' it, it ultimately went away, but if
the power folks had persisted, maybe it could have been a few weeks instead
of a few months.

Pat,

Happy to see that the your electric power company was able to find the
noise source.

The two ground rods near a power pole about 200 yards from my backyard
is being used to hold up some yellow caution tape surrounding
a hole at the power pole. The tape has the words fiber optic cable and
this cable is being hung on the power poles. Lately a little noise
problem has been noticed. I hope that Clark Utilities has the same service
as Pat's power company.

nice clean signal this AM. 666 was Chinese this AM at 1410, all by itself,

1107 was Japanese at a moderate level, mixing with whatever has been on that

level that I was originally listening in English and did not recognize this
old friend.

There was a second station in with VOA on 1575. The new one was mostly

So, it was a really nice morning here.

Interesting that John heard CC on 666 while I had Russian, albeit a bit earlier

Re: [IRCA] Powerline noise

2009-10-07 Thread Patrick Martin
Rick,

Thanks. There is more to have done. Since the property in question is
private and there was nobody home, all the PPL people could do is to
move the downlead of the electic fence away from the downspout and leave
their card and ask them to call. They will instruct the people how to
solve the issue. Hopefuly they will comply so my problem will be gone
permanently. PPL will call me in a week or two to give me the results.
Being metal against metal, when it is dry I get the noise, but as soon
as the sun goes down te moisture here on the coast collects and the
noise is pretty much gone until it dries out.

Listened between 13:20 and 14:15 UTC and immediately noticed that there was no

right poor early on, and I've dumped all of those SDR files as not worth
listening to. However, by 14:00 things really picked up and became quite good,

I have also heard it on one of the other NHK big guns when they are in CC.

Keith Perron of Happy Station in Taiwan reports that jamming has
taken a serious uptick leading up to the 60th Anniversary of the revolution.

For the record, I have never heard any kind of SW images on the Eton E1 on
medium-wave -
and especially not when I am running whip only with the pre-amp in the off

Will watch in the up coming mornings.

As for tonight - going to see Tony Bennett - so that will mean
that tonight will be stellar TA conditions!

transmitter, rather than a relay by one of the the city or provincial
stations. I didn't notice the freq.

[IRCA] TAs from Victoria

2009-10-07 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Started listening here at 02:55 UTC (7:55 pm) and immediately had 855 with
pretty good audio, with presumed Slovak Radio. 1053 as well (03:07) sounds
like TalkSport with English and some music too. 1089 likely the same. 963 and
1134 both there in fair audio, but suffering a lot of splatter. 1215 Absolute
at 03:13. Plenty of strong hets, and perhaps 10 or 15 6 level audios.
Nothing yet like something really amazing, but surely not too bad either.

For me the most common other station(s) on 1575 is always AFN from Japan with
several low power transmitters. I've heard 2 at the same time. They normally
alwalys
simulcast, but time pips/IDs (not local) are sometimes a few seconds apart.
AFN often dominates the channel later in the morning compared to VOAWalt

I put it in the header so its clear. Until last year, TAs were rare if not

Will watch in the up coming mornings.

As for tonight - going to see Tony Bennett - so that will mean

Keith is correct, but the jamming itself is distinctive. Either numerous CNR1

[IRCA] TAs

2009-10-07 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi All:

Many TAs in here tonight. First noted over an hour before local sunset. Most TA
split frequencies across the band had at least a carrier, many had audio, tho
mostly faint. A couple of surprises heard, english pop music on 945 which
paralled 1377 was Toulouse, France and the UK's Talksport on 1089, neither of
which is heard often here, whereas Talksport on 1053 is much more common as is
France on 1377. Two men talking rapidly in Spanish on 855 was most certainly
Spain which is a new country for me. I also heard music and arabic language
spoken on 1476 which could have been the UAE, plus music and arabic type
chanting on 1404 which could have been Iran, so 2 tentatives there. An hour or
so after local sunset the US stations had faded up, most TAs were nothing but
faint carriers. Nothing but faint carriers heard on longwave.

I think that's it in a nutshell Pete. This solar minimum has gone on and on,
beyond anything in our lifetimes. Yes, we've become more experienced DXers,
and the new toys help, but I feel that the basic DX is better, and the long

I heard the buzz saw at a very loud volume all evening on 1134 kHz. I
thought that my neighbor was doing the laundry, but the crazy signal didn't
null out on any loop. Croatia was strong then, too. What a drag!!!
