[IRCA] TP 5 Oct Victoria version

2016-10-05 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A messy morning, couple of Aussies, mostly bigger gun Asians, and
some Zedders (Star was a star), not a lot that was consistently
strong. Likely a lot of channels might have yielded further
loggings if one sat down and listened to each one as the erratic
fading delivered something new.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

594 JOAK woman in Japanese 1405UT
612 4QR teletalk 1358UT //702
774 JOUB Chinese lessons 1341UT and other times. 1411UT had English
lessons with a fine humorous vignette on blowfish soup, missed the
denoument when it faded below assumed 3LO, so don't know if anyone
got sick or died.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

702 2BL teletalk DU English 1348UT
747 JOIB Chninese lessons 1343UT
828 JOBB Engflish lessons 1401UT
972 HLCA woman in Korean 1341UT, man on phone
1287 JOHR man in Japanese 1401UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

576 man in DU English 1403UT, no parallel available
675 RNZ National woman in DU English // 756 which was much weaker
846 man in DU English 1422UT, no parallel
891 DU English teletalk assumed 5AN
1242 pop music 1403UT, nothing on hour. Better on north Flag, assumed JOLF.
1566 HLAZ FEBC mention by woman 1341UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

567 JOIK man in Japanese //594 1335UT
657 Star. Laid back vocal music 1344UT, not on north Flag at
all. Assumed Star, verified by //963 1348UT

855 light music not //702 or 612 1417UT
882 Star. man in DU English? 1403UT west Flag only, briefly //909.
909 Star. man talking 1403UT //882 and 963 etc.
954 man talking, Japanese inflection 1346UT
963 Star. Laid back music 1407UT //909
1053 Korean jammer 1346UT
1089 NHK2 woman talking // 774 1346UT
1116 man talking, DU English? 1401UT
1143 woman talking, Chinese inflection? 1335UT
1386 woman talking not //747 or 774

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter) lots of near audio here

Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/5/16

2016-10-05 Thread Chuck Hutton
It's a great thing that IRCA requires a board motion and board approval for a
minor change that no other mailing list (as best I know) would require board
action. We wouldn't want to let common sense prevail.

Way to tie us up in bureacracy, IRCA.

Send me any list and I will convert it into a PDF and put it on DXer.ca

Jesus is coming back before we see any change on the upload limit on this
list.

And that's a good thing of course. :-)

Re: [IRCA] Warbler On 1000

2016-10-05 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Wobbler station on 1000 is very common here, usually duking it out with the
co-channel Colombian. WMVP is weak at this QTH, seldom competitive with the
Latin Americans.

Readers of DX News already know the answer, as reported by IDXD's Bruce Conti:
1000 CUBA   R.Artemisa, Artemisa  SEP 4 0400 - Loud wobbling noise over WMVP;
identified as R.Artemisa by Terry Krueger (FL), see // 1020 kHz. [Conti-NH]

<<
I can't help much, except to say I hear it too. It comes and goes here.
I remember hearing it before on that freq.

It was *very* pronounced back on Oct. 2-3 UT, when auroral conditions
were in play.

It's most pronounced on the DKAZ antenna, pointed south (which partially
nulls the dominant Chicago station, WMVP). I just heard the Cuban
Rebelde network tag underneath Chicago, so maybe that station is having
transmitter problems?

Re: [IRCA] Ultralight "poll" / question

2016-10-05 Thread d1028gary
<<< For those of you who ultralight, if you could only keep one model for your
dx work (with just the stock barefoot antenna) ... which one would it be
and why? Your go-to radio. >>>

Yikes, what's a stock barefoot antenna??

Seriously, my choice would probably be the new C.Crane Skywave, which has a
slight edge over the Tecsun PL-380 model in both MW sensitivity and 1 kHz DSP
audio intelligibility. But this is strictly from the perspective of a hard-core
transoceanic DXer, who has probably violated more radio warranties than anybody
else on the planet. I can understand the thrill of chasing DX with a stock,
unmodified Ultralight, but if you have gained a dubious reputation by
transplanting huge loopsticks and FSL antennas into innocent pocket radios
(with the contagious craze even spreading to places like Japan), it's tough to
go back to square one.

If I were a sane domestic DXer I would probably go for something like the new
Eton Traveler III (which despite its quirks is a very capable receiver, unless
you chase 9 kHz splits) or the Sony SFR-T615 (of which I have just as many as
Rob Ross). For those on the list who have yet to be infected by the Ultralight
craze, the most recent full review of all the latest pocket radio models is
posted at

Hi,

For those of you who ultralight, if you could only keep one model for your
dx work (with just the stock barefoot antenna) ... which one would it be
and why? Your go-to radio.

Curious what people think as DX season cranks up.

True, Chuck, but none of those Macquarie net parallels are likely to be of much
help to a DXer in Oklahoma, who is struggling to receive the big gun 1116-4BC
on a basic pocket radio.

<<< talk-oriented 1116-4BC doesn't have anything like the multiple parallels

My original point was that unlike 1116-4BC, the ABC stations have a multiple
network of reasonable parallel possibilities at very long range, such as
612-702-774 for the LR Network, and 576-792-846 for the RN network.

Unfortunately as a commercial station, talk-oriented 1116-4BC doesn't have
anything like the multiple parallels and website archives of the ABC stations.
But it is one of the strongest Australian signals here on the west coast,
regularly received in places like Victoria. I'm sure you will receive it at a
better level if you keep trying.

Re: [IRCA] Warbler On 1000

2016-10-05 Thread Mark Pettifor
I can't help much, except to say I hear it too. It comes and goes here.
I remember hearing it before on that freq.

It was *very* pronounced back on Oct. 2-3 UT, when auroral conditions
were in play.

It's most pronounced on the DKAZ antenna, pointed south (which partially
nulls the dominant Chicago station, WMVP). I just heard the Cuban
Rebelde network tag underneath Chicago, so maybe that station is having
transmitter problems?

True, Chuck, but none of those Macquarie net parallels are likely to be of much
help to a DXer in Oklahoma, who is struggling to receive the big gun 1116-4BC
on a basic pocket radio.

<<< talk-oriented 1116-4BC doesn't have anything like the multiple parallels
and website archives of the ABC stations... >>>

My original point was that unlike 1116-4BC, the ABC stations have a multiple
network of reasonable parallel possibilities at very long range, such as
612-702-774 for the LR Network, and 576-792-846 for the RN network.

This was my first serious listening in several days. Unfortunately,
conditions were decidedly mediocre with a few of the regulars making
half-hearted appearances. The only audio noted here was between about
1325 and 1405 UTC, which I guess could qualify as an enhancement.

I would most likely choose a Tecsun PL-606. The only difference between it and
the slightly larger PL-310 is it doesn't have a keypad allowing for direct
entry of a frequency. I've had success with both at hearing transoceanic
signals.

Another good candidate is the C Crane Skywave.

I hope this helps.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Ultralight "poll" / question

2016-10-05 Thread Les Rayburn
Russ,

I’m already violating the terms you put out there. But here goes:

1.) The Sangean PR-D5 (Not really ultralight, but portable for sure.)

2.) My pocket-sized Sony SRF-T615

The SRF-T615 for me is the pure sense of what an “ultralight” really is. Sure
you can modify a lot of small radios, and add massive unwieldy antennas that
will pull in great DX. But they’re hardly ultralight.

The SRF-T615 is not just pocket-sized, it’s almost invisible and yet pulls in
great DX on the AM band. It’s selective, and very sensitive. I listen to mine
every night while walking the dogs, and consistently log new stations while
doing so. It’s hard to find here, and expensive—but a wonder.

For those of us who don’t live on the coasts, performance in logging domestic
stations is key. That’s a very different challenge than logging odd-frequency
splits.

73,

Les N1LF

Those automatically checked the NOAA place so it shows what they have found.
Since it does that, it takes the NOAA and also keep the 13 previous ones by

For those of you who ultralight, if you could only keep one model for your

and why? Your go-to radio.

Curious what people think as DX season cranks up.

Actually, 4BC has a LOT of parallels. During the times when we hear them,
dozens of stations (including 4BC) are on the Macquarie net.

I'd attach the Macquarie net list, but it's too big and IRCA will always and
forever be stuck with the silly size limit.

Richard:

Despite the weak and tentative loggings on some frequencies, your DU-DXing
results in Oklahoma are already pretty phenomenal for someone using a $50
pocket radio and an 8" diameter antenna.

<<< I didn’t hear anything on 567 kHz, but the PL-380’s S/N indicator was
showing a signal. >>>

The PL-380 does this occasionally with very weak signals. It's like an early
indication of a possible reception.

program, but there was a passage of distinctive sounding Tibetan music that
matched the simulcast on Radio Australia. Later I downloaded a podcast from the
ABC to compare. There is no doubt that I heard the station. >>>

Yes, the ABC website can be very useful for DXers who have received a DU
signal, and want to match the programming content at a specific time and date.
Most of the programs are archived with a dated and timed podcast, although as
you know, it takes a little time and practice to sort through the website maze.

<<< Unfortunately I couldn’t do the same after with 4BC yesterday. Due to the
weak signal and QRN it was just unintelligent talk by a man. I’m pretty sure it
was English. There was a brief announcement by a woman that coincided with what
was on the internet. Even after running the recording passed Audacity and
iTunes several time I couldn’t tell what I had heard. So I’m only listing the
4BC ID as tentative. I can’t believe it’s only 6.3 kW at night. I briefly had a
inaudible signal on 1016 kHz at sunset in Brisbane this morning. >>>

1017 kHz is one of the more interesting DU frequencies on the west coast.
Besides A3Z in Tonga (with its foreign language and early signoff, usually
around 1100 UTC) the most common catches on the ocean coast are the Australian
horse racing station 2KY and NZ's Newstalk ZB. 1017-Tonga has a reputation for
being undermodulated, but it is still frequently received when propagation
favors it, usually around its local sunset. Unfortunately its early sign off
usually makes it impossible for west coast DXpeditioners to hear it during our
sunrise enhancement sessions.

I feel Tahiti on 738 kHz is nearly impossible because of the inference on 740
kHz. At night, I mostly hear near-by KRMG (25 kW) and CFZM (50 kW) with an
occasional XE from south of the border. The same is true of 4QR on 612.
KCSP-610 is audible 24/7 and pretty much impossible to null toward Australia.
There is also XEGS in Sinaloa.

Because of the distance and super powered signals, it’s easier to hear Asians.

Good DX.

Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/5/16

2016-10-05 Thread Richard Allen
Gary:

I didn’t hear anything on 567 kHz, but the PL-380’s S/N indicator was showing a
signal.

I got lucky hearing 3LO on Sunday. I couldn’t understand the talking on the
program, but there was a passage of distinctive sounding Tibetan music that
matched the simulcast on Radio Australia. Later I downloaded a podcast from
the ABC to compare. There is no doubt that I heard the station.

Unfortunately I couldn’t do the same after with 4BC yesterday. Due to the weak
signal and QRN it was justl unintelligent talk by a man. I’m pretty sure it was
English.
I briefly had
a inaudible signal on 1016 kHz at sunset in Brisbane this morning.

Good DX.

Richard.

2016-10-05 Thread R. Colin Newell
I am going to pour myself a drink when I finally hear this "jammer" --
which is likely a light dimmer located somewhere...

near Haeju, North Korea...

My session ran from 1315 until 1330 when I bagged in -- obviously before a
useful LSR surge

Admittedly there was much more top tier NHK action and beluga sized Korean
stations wading out of the surf... but not much more at the time.

Hello Richard,

Congratulations on your recent DU receptions in Oklahoma (even though this
morning wasn't one of the better ones). Your 8" FSL is surely one of the more
successful portable antennas on the planet.

<<< A few traces of DU signals on 567... >>>

DU audio on 567 is almost always from RNZ in New Zealand. The Australian
co-channel 4JK is a pretty unusual catch, even here on the west coast. If you
receive 567 audio at a better level you can check for an RNZ parallel on 675 or
756 (QRM permitting).

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-5

2016-10-05 Thread d1028gary
Asian signals recovered somewhat this morning, led by the Japanese and Korean
big guns. Results here seemed a little less impressive than those reported by
Dennis, though, with only a few second-tier TP's showing up with audio.

My session started off at 1255 with the 1566-North Korean jammer all alone on
the frequency at a fair level, without a trace of HLAZ. Increasing daylight
around 1335 brought the usual big guns on 594, 693, 747, 774, 972 and 1053 up
to good levels in and out, but besides these only 603-HLSA (fair),
657-Pyongyang (poor) and 1134-JOQR (fair) made it out of the noise until a late
run around 1400 by a presumed 738-BEL2 (poor). With the exception of a potent
972-HLCA around 1347 (and at other times) there weren't very many energetic
signals here this morning, as Asian propagation still seemed to be in the
recovery mode. Overall the session was lackluster, but still a distinct
improvement over yesterday.

972 HLCA Dangjin, S. Korea Very good level Korean female and male speech at
1347, but certainly could use some freedom from "Freedom 970"
