[IRCA] 1610 "booming" into Victoria

2017-01-29 Thread Walter Salmaniw
CHHA Voces Latinas I'm hearing at the best levels ever at 06:30 UTC
tonight. Listed as 6.25 kW and totally dominating the channel. Normally I
have terrible splatter from Blaine on 1600, but tonight my North directed
corner fed loop is performing admirably. My other antennas are favouring
the WA based TIS. Very nice reception, indeed, with lots of ads and IDs,
and Latin music. Enjoy it while you can! 73,Walt

I'd check around before writing off solar array chargers. They're just like any
other switching power supply that takes in voltage A and converts it to voltage
B.

And just like 12 VDC to 110AC inverters, some are noisy and some are quiet. It
is popssible to find inverters that are quiet and sometimes the manufacturer
will advertise that. My Monster Power inverter was such a case - it was
designed to be quiet and it was.

I'd check out the solar arrays and see if you can stumble on one specifically
designed to be quiet. Then you'll have at least a 50/50 chance of sucess...

Colin, I've thought about solar arrays, too, both in Victoria and in
Masset, but the RFI risks are simply too great, especially for Masset. The
power has to be stored somewhere, and it's the inverters that scares the
bejesus out of me. Otherwise, I'd embrace them immediately!
Unfortunately, things can change on a dime, and unless you live a long way
from any neighbours, we're all at risk. I think that in Victoria, Nick was
the first of us to experience the local noise problems over the years. I
was lucky in Oak Bay for the 20 years we lived there, relatively RFI free,
but sure experience it now a lot in Fairfield. I suspect someone in the
immediate neighbourhood has those darn Wi-Fi extenders via BPL. Ugly to
look at the spectrum and see similar buzzes, often a lot closer together
than even 100 kHz. I'm not sure whether bigger and higher antennas are the
answer. Won't they just pick up and amplify the noise even more??? 73,

Re: [IRCA] Alberta TPs for 29 January 2017

2017-01-29 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Thanks for that information, Don. So there are solar arrays that can be
quiet. My concern would be that if I installed such beasts at my
locations, it'd be done commercially, and I wouldn't know whether there'd
be any RFI until after the fact. I'm sure the contractor would have no
idea, nor care about such "trivial" matters. As for 200 new homes, that IS
worrisome. Heck, for Colin in Victoria, his RFI changed as soon as 2 new
homes went in across the street! 73,...Walt
PS, where are all these people coming from??? We see the same urban
sprawl all over Victoria, where every possible square meter of land is
being built upon. Gone were the days when there was no such thing as
travel delays here! It surely is not improving overall quality of life,
IMHO.

I have about 7 kw of solar installed here Walt, with almost no interference
issues. But no charge controllers are used and the inverters are actually
APC brand UPS's.

And I also have some Dlink PowerLine extenders (DHP-306av) in use, one
circuit passes within a few feet of the Wellbrook loop and causes no issues
at all.

I have a potential 200 home subdivision planned on my northern boundary (I
see some survey stakes already in place) so I'm not looking forward to that
- on so many levels.

Build the antennas so big they're physically threatening to the neighbors.
Show them the rip-cord you can pull to 'accidentally' topple them into their
yard.

Why I don't get out of bed for audio traces -

Sleep is more therapeutic.

On a QRM side bar, tracked down a huge source of daytime RFI to a neighbors
solar array inverter that blasts the MW and HF spectrum with a buzz every
100 kHz or so.

We are very good neighbors and he was quite upset to discover that his house
was the source of disruptive interference.

My attitude is: if neighbors are going to interfere with my hobby, I'm just
going to build bigger and higher antennas.

Confirmed on webstream..

1575VOA ThailandVery weak, with bits of talk around 1455.

I didn't get a chance to report yesterday, but it was better, especially
