 Hi:

I would like to know if anybody has had any experience with Media Player
11 in conjunction with JFW? I keep getting prompted to upgrade, but I
know of one person who has had trouble with 11, and my husband who is
sighted says it's set up a bit different than 10. I'm running JFW 7.10
with Windows XP. I don't want to get myself into something I shouldn't
because I'm not a computer wizard. Any feedback would be greatly
appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] list memo

2007-05-26 Thread David A Ferrin

Hello and welcome to all the new members of the list. The count is at an all
time high right now at 271, and even though the archives address is counted
in there this thing has grown much larger then I figured it ever would.
Never the less to the business at hand. The current plan is to move this
list on Friday June first to my domain provider's server. It uses the
Mailman program for list traffic and I've been testing and configuring it
for the past week and a half. Rick and I believe it is ready for prime time
right now, but I'm giving it another week to press the lapels ETC. The plan
is right now to automatically subscribe everybody who is on here at that
time to the new list. I feel that will give you folks and us a bit less work
to do during the transition. I am planning on doing an audio on the mailman
client this week for those who aren't familiar with it, and to be honest I
need to review a couple of things too. You will all be able to go no mail or
set digest mode yourselves through the email interface. Also the program
claims to handle bounce processing on it's own, that's way cool for us let
me tell you. Lastly for right now if anybody doesn't wish to make the move
they will be able to unsubscribe from the new list as easy as it is to come
or go here. I still need to bring the rest of the team up to speed, but that
shouldn't be too tuff once we all hook up.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to:

Hi William,
Do the following:
1. With the Jaws cursor sitting on the graphic, press insert + G
to open the graphics labeler.
2. Hit the delete key to remove the current graphic label, which is usually
a number.
3. Tab, and fill in the edit fields as appropriate, and then tab again
to the save graphic , and make sure the save to application file is
selected.
4. Spacebar the okay button, you are done.
Note:
You will have to repeat this procedure for each graphic that you need to
label.

.Well, I'm not exactly sure about this, but it never hurts to try.
.Try manually labeling the graphics while in the application, making sure to

.too.
.The reason I say I'm not sure, is that the application resides on a network

[JAWS-Users] memo to the list

2007-05-23 Thread David A Ferrin

Well as I did earlier today I'm replying to you both on and off list in an
attempt to make sure you receive this message. You are still on here and no
the list is not dead although it would seem in some what critical condition

on my server space that hosts this group's web page and of course my email
accounts. The list is at this time going to remain on here for a little
while longer at least until I'm fairly satisfied that the new configuration
is ready for prime time so to speak, and of course I bring the rest of the
team up to speed on it as well. Possibly June first at the earliest, but
that's not set in stone. This business of having to reset accounts is
getting tiresome with google. I'll climb down off of my soap box for now and
go check your account to see if it needs reset miss Sarah.

[JAWS-Users] Re: forms mode question

2007-05-21 Thread David A Ferrin

In most cases it's not really a jaws issue so far as that goes. It has to do
with the authoring practices of the web designer who setup the page. I know
it is frustrating but often enough that is our lot in life. The main thing
is that you know the work around to employ.

Hello everyone,
I was on the bmg music web site, and I wanted to fill out the form to join
the club. I went into forms mode so that I could type the information into
the edit boxes. For example where I needed to type in my first name jaws
just says edit. I tabbed through all of the edit boxes and it just says
edit. I went out of forms mode and looked around on the page, and then jaws
would read first name, last name, mailing address etc. It is very
frustrating to have to go in and out of forms mode just to get something
filled out. Is there any way to get jaws to read this information while I'm
in forms mode? I hope I have explained this well enough, so you all will
understand what I'm trying too do. I am running jaws 6.0, and I have
windows XP home. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Take care,
Lisa

I noticed that when I open an email in Microsoft outlook, JAWS doesn't, by

I'm using Office 2003.

Hi Al,

Here are the steps.
1 start menu
2 Hit the letter p for programs
3 Hit the letter m for Microsoft office sub menu, and enter
4 place focus on Microsoft outlook, but do not enter
5 hit the applications key, on a standard keyboard it is the 3rd key to
the right of the space bar
6 arrow up to properties and enter.
7 tab to the run combo box and arrow to normal window
8 tab to apply changes and enter
9 tab to ok and enter

once done, repeat steps to get window maximized
I noticed that you are running office 2000, so i don't know if you will
have a sub menu in your programs. if you don't just make sure you have focus
on Microsoft office before hitting the applications key.

Try pasting the file name I already gave you in the run dialog box and see
if it brings up outlook express or not. If and I do believe it will you
could use it to create a desktop icon. For example on this system the
complete path is as follows:

C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe

Unless you are using an operating system older than windows 95 I'm quite
sure it's on there.

They are the database files that outlook express uses for storing your

The reason it does this is in case of corruption of present .dbx files,
which can happen. In that circumstance, you could restore a .bak file to
  make outlook Express usable again.

it's

happy to receive answers to my question off-list at:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To the question at hand then...

While checking my recycle bin the other day, I noticed that there are
several files corresponding to the folders I have in my Outlook Express
  program.

They are even named the same, save for a .BAK extension.

Obviously, the .BAK extension indicates that this is a back-up copy of my
folder files, but why are they in there?

I have not deleted any files pertaining to Outlook Express, nor have I run
any programs associated with Outlook Express, so I'm wondering how they
got
there, and if there's a way to turn this feature off?

While I don't mind that these files are being backed up, it does me no
good
if they are going directly to my recycle bin, as I may delete them at a
crucial time when I do need them.

I have checked out the properties of these files, and all they tell me is
that their origins are Outlook Express and nothing more.

If people could check to see if they are experiencing this, I would very
  much appreciate it.

The only thing I have installed since this started happening are the
normal
Windows and Microsoft updates, but none of them mentioned doing anything
to
Outlook Express. They were all, either Windows updates, or Microsoft
Office
  Outlook updates.

If it helps any, I am using XP home edition, Jaws 7 and Outlook Express 6.

  Any ideas?

  Victor

Found an application that will allow you to tag your MP3 files with, artist
name, song title, year, album name and other information and it works great
with Jaws.
This is mainly for original recordings, but will work with any MP3 or Wave
files.

There are some other applications there such as MP3 split, but I haven't
tried them to know if they will work with Jaws or not.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Interesting Finds in the Recycle Bin

What that means my friend is that outlook express periodically compacts it's
DBX files, and as such places older copies of them in your recycle bin. So

 Hi RJ,
While in Internet Explorer, open the Jaws configuration manager.
Next, go to the set options, and select html settings.
Now, go to the links tab, and tab to text links.
Here you can choose from 5 options, and it is already set to on mouse
 over,
so up arrow once to use screen text.
now, tab to the okay button, hit enter to accept the changes, and then
 save
your changes when you close the manager.

[JAWS-Users] memo to the entire list

2007-05-11 Thread David A Ferrin

For the past several weeks or so google groups has been giving those of us
who run this beast problems that I can only describe as deal breakers for
the lack of a better term. Many of you have got your accounts reset by one
of us during this time and to be honest it's getting to be a lot of work.
Actually it's been more so here lately then it was for the entire first five
months after the move. I'm not sure what exactly to do at this point. The
options are try and ride the storm out and hope for the best. Move it back
to Yahoo or simply shut it down. I figure that there's enough of an interest
in this group that shutting it down would only be a last resort. I moved it
for mainly two reasons, first quicker delivery of messages, and second for
less work on the management side. Delivery for many people has stopped for
no reason at all, and the work side for management is starting to grow quite
a bit. Please direct your opinions to the following address
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've set that account up for this purpose, and when this is resolved it will
go away. I've sort of set a time frame to make the final choice regarding a
move back for June first, three weeks from today. Interestingly enough that
will be six months exactly since the last move. There are a number of issues
to take care of either way, and I haven't had the chance to speak with all
of the other managers on here as of yet. In fact at least one person so far
as I know has never done a Yahoo group before at all.

[JAWS-Users] new programs

2007-05-09 Thread David A Ferrin

I've been adding various programs all along here, but I wanted to point out
the couple just posted today. First an updated version of 7 zip. Second a
MP3 file splitting program called book split. I suggest it only be used for
straight voice files because it only splits by a pre determined time
interval. You have some play so far as setting that is concerned, but it
wouldn't work well for music files. I may do an audio tutorial on it as the
thing wouldn't be too tuff to do. I'd like to know if there would be any
interest in such a thing first I suppose.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Doing a repair on JAWS

2007-05-08 Thread David A Ferrin

Short of dumping it out of memory and then reloading jaws I'm hopeful this
will be fixed in the next version. It's cause for grumbling some times for
sure.

I believe that tomorrow's another day, and I'll probably screw that one up

David:
Using JAWS 8.0 latest version, IE7, Outlook express, I am having a similar
problem, there are times the message will come up in a minute or so but
there other times it will not read. When it won't read the only option I
have found is to hit the escape key then enter on the message again.

If you are running the most recent update to jaws 8 I can sort of see this
happening. The reason I say that is on my system the issue here is when I
 go
to reply to an email which you might guess happens around 50 times a day
 or
so every once in a while jaws takes maybe a half a minute to bring up my
edit field so I can write my message. This is boarder line irritating
because something is making it very sluggish. Now that's the only issue I
can point toward in this version of jaws at this time. So if your system
 is
at all like mine my guess is and I know this is less than an optimal idea
wait a minute and see if it comes up on it's own. I in having this problem
found out that it was just slow because once I tried to reply an email and
right then the phone rang or something so I got distracted long enough
 that
my message edit field popped up on it's own.

I think it behaved better last night, but now I'm not sure

Hey David,
I have thunderbird on a flash card, and I went to another computer, but what
thunderbird did is configured to their email. I couldn't get mine.
What am I doing wrong?
When I put it on my computer it did all the configuration for my computer.
I thought I could use this program, so when I go to my daughter's I would be
able to read my email without going on the internet, because that is hard to

I have version 8.0 and i wanted to update from the FS site. i was told to
do a repair on JAWS since some file or files names had ben changed--i never
changed a JAWS file. Anyway, i looked all over the place where i thought
the repair would be and FS did it again, changed something. Ah well, maybe
they're trying to keep us old JAWS users on our toes?

thankks again, my friend.

Hi Arianna,
You didn't say which version of Jaws,
but try this:
Put your Jaws installation cd in for the version you want to repair.
The setup program should start automatically, and inform you that Jaws is
already installed,
and then ask you what you want to do.
This is where you will get the repair option.
No, your mind didn't go blank, FS changed things a little. smile.

have gone blank not to be able to find this.

Unfortunately the program isn't as screen reader friendly as any of us would
like in some of those areas. What I like is the fact that once it's set the
way you want it the program can be run and automatically exit itself. That's
how I have it running on system boot up.

David,

hello David,

Will you cover the part of cleaning the registry using CCleaner? I
have used CCleaner and I am looking forward to your audio since I
find it somewhat difficult to use the software with the Jaws curser.
I have not used the registry cleaning feature because I am concern

The first audio is just about finished right now. It covers installing and
setting up your first email account. More audio files I'm hoping will come

[JAWS-Users] May first guide lines reminder message

2007-05-01 Thread David A Ferrin

Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The
purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader
Program.

So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better
with
scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be
requesting
information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we all know
works
very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or want
to
learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently.
Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates
a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does.
The ideal place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that
everybody
no matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have
the
confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the
list
will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help
is
quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than
first.
So try it yourself first what ever it might happen to be. If you get stuck
then
let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma.
Then
I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there
is a
software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is
perfectly
fine.
The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient
with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of Freedom
Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I suggest
you
take it up with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject
lines
relevant and descriptive as possible. Also any news letters except those
that
directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to the list prior to receiving
moderator approval. Attachments should never be sent to the list at all for
any
reason what so ever.
When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive
in
the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply delete
messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are around 200
subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here.
Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines,
then
post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions that
are
more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not receive
an
answer for a number of reasons.
Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer
message that accompanies every message posted to the list. There you will
find
the group web address along with some other relevant information pertaining
to
contacting the management team ETC. It is very frustrating to read a post
asking
for the groupÂ’s web address when the very next line states visit the JAWS
Users
List home page and the next line after that is the URL.
Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you
may
receive an email from Google Groups asking you to reactivate your account.
Please donÂ’t simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the
directions to reactivate your account of course after making sure it is from
Google Groups. If you donÂ’t after receiving a number of such messages then
we
will figure that you no longer wish to be a member of the list and remove
your
email address.
The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting
or other such inappropriate activities. This is not a high tech swap shop or
anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will
not
be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is off topic
then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not
make
it all right. Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips,
or
pleas to help dying kids, should ever be forwarded to the list.
My hope is that this list will always be a place where everybody no matter
what
their particular skill level can feel safe to ask any question at all with
in
the guidelines that I have set forth. It is my experience that such rules of
conduct are important to keep good people on the list.

Hi I can share with you how I manage digital pictures.

Usually, I've got a sighted person taking the pictures for
me. I have them
provide me with info so that I either make a list on my
computer, or on my
digital recorder. This list contains a very brief
description of the
picture, and either its actual number from the camera, or
which picture in
the sequence it is, first, second, etc.

When I connect my digital camera to my computer, it appears
in the My
Computer list as just another drive. I navigate to the
folder on the
camera storage device and locate the list of pictures
currently residing on
it.

I then copy the pictures to a folder on my computer. You
will either
identify the pictures by their number assigned by the
camera, or you will
just have to remember that the pictures you are looking for
are the last 5
pictures, for example.

Once I have the pictures on my hard drive, I rename them to
something that
will remind me of the pictures contents.

You are going to have to hope someone else knows what to do
to post these
pictures up on e-bay.

HTH,
Annette

[JAWS-Users] Re: the group home page

2007-04-27 Thread David A Ferrin

Thank you, actually what it does is pick the date and time off of your own
computer and display it to you at the top of the page. I just wasn't
absolutely sure of that until the first person replied this morning. I've
never done a CGI script before. You folks are causing me to learn too much
new stuff, not complaining though.

  you said:
I have a couple of questions about the virus vault in AVG. If there is
anything
in the virus vault that AVG. has caught, does that mean that any and all
traces of
the viruses are gone from the computer?
a: yes once AVG either places it on its vault or deletes it, it pretty
much took care of the problem.
Also should the virus vault be emptied?
a: acording to technical support from the grisoft company yes it is
recommended a least once or twice a month.
and the way you do this is open your AVG control center then right click
on the virus vault or use your JFW cursor then do a right mouse button click
assuming you got the free AVG.
in my opinion one of the big differences between the free AVG and paid one
is its layout seems a bit easier on the paid one besides that on the paid
one you do get 24/7 tech support.
and if so, do the viruses completely disappear from the hard drive, or do
they just
  go to the recycle Ben?
a: they don't go to the recycle bin.

I've got JAWS 8.0.1163U and Word 2003. If I press Insert + DownArrow
Eloquence does a SayAll, and if I press Alt + Insert + DownArrow my SAPI
5 does the SayAll - this is as it should be. But if I go to the SayAll
Options dialogue in the configuration manager and check the Use SAPI 5
during SayAll option, my understanding is that the voices should
reverse - Insert + DownArrow should give me a SAPI 5 voice, and Alt +
Insert + DownArrow should give me Eloquence. I get the SAPI 5 voice for
both keystrokes.

Am I doing something wrong, or have I missed something? It isn't a major
problem, I'm just intrigued.

Steve

[JAWS-Users] Re: Blocking e-mails in OE from Claude Rains

2007-04-21 Thread David A Ferrin

Try creating a message rule to delete messages if the from field contains
sender unspecified. If that works it will simply send them to your deleted
folder. Now if that works for you then change the rule to have them deleted
off of the server and you'll hopefully never need to deal with the invisible
man again. Let me know if it works for you because it's been a while since
I've had to deal with anything like our friend Clod Raines.

Hi folks,

Another OE question (though this might go for regular Outlook users as
well). Lately, especially this week, I have been getting a lot of e-mails
from 'sender unspecified.' These have no sender return address when I open
them, no subject line and no text in the body of the message. When I try to
use the BLOCK SENDER function, OE alerts me that the sender could not be
blocked (I take it because the sender is unspecified). However, there *are*
e-mails coming in, they have a time and date on them. Just no content and no
return e-mail addy. Is there any way to block this sort of message? Today
alone I got eight of them, and they seem to be multiplying like rabbits week
to week. Anybody else have experience with this?

Best,

Joe Monks

They then said easy. I can transfer you to customer service and you can buy

I told them no, that they didn't follow, I didn't need another license, it
just wasn't taking my key.

They said that's cause you've already activated it once.

I then said well I crashed it was outta my control.

Well, sir, we can get you up and going once you buy it again.

Why should us consumers have to buy Vista again, just to suit their greeting

Well let me put in my two sense. This message is bunk. Maybe Chris was
unfortunate enough to talk to someone at Microsoft that didn't have a clue
as to what they were talking about. I've already talked to several people
that including myself that are running Vista that have done multiple
installs of their product whether it's retail or OEM. I haven't installed
my product here more than once but believe the sources that I have talked to
today. If anyone else has proof against what I am saying here really needs
to step forward with the proof they have. I talked to someone on blind tech
that clearly stated that this is not true in any way.

 Hi David,

I tend to believe the people I know that are actually using Vista since
they'd be the best people to ask such a question to. They assure me that
not only have they installed Vista more than once on the machine, also
 that
MS isn't placing any such restrictions on anyone. As I said before, if
anyone has any provable information to the contrary then please step

 Hi,

Well let me put in my two sense. This message is bunk. Maybe Chris was
unfortunate enough to talk to someone at Microsoft that didn't have a
 clue
as to what they were talking about. I've already talked to several
 people
that including myself that are running Vista that have done multiple
installs of their product whether it's retail or OEM. I haven't

[JAWS-Users] thunderbird

2007-04-19 Thread David A Ferrin

Well I'm once again taking thunder bird around the block this morning
and it's driving a little smoother now that I have the seat adjusted
correctly along with a couple of other things. This is thanks to some
coaching by Rick and a couple of lights coming on inside my head, no
wonder I can't sleep at night it's too bright in there but I digress.
Actually it seems to have it all and then some folks, I'm quite
impressed. I noticed that you could have identities and virtually
everything else that outlook express has and possibly even more. It
might not replace my default email client but it's probably going on the
road when we travel for sure. Who knows that audio tutorial maybe coming
sooner than I thought, only time will tell. Thanks to who ever pointed
this little beast out in the first place.

[JAWS-Users] Re: CCleaner

2007-04-19 Thread David A Ferrin

Well according to the web page where I got the thing It didn't really sound
like all that much. The bugs it fixes aren't very common, as a result I say
if the version you are using at this time is working perfectly for you then
leave well enough alone. On the other hand if you are somebody who has
trouble with the program in the past then possibly this update might just
fix what ever issues you are experiencing.

[JAWS-Users] impressions on thunderbird portable so far

2007-04-18 Thread David A Ferrin

Well I have got to tell you folks that if you're looking for something
simple and really basic to use for retrieving your email on the go then I'm
not sure it is for you. On the other hand if you really need a powerful
portable program that is completely stocked with any and or all of the bells
and whistles that you're accustomed to on your home system then by all means
give it a shot. It seems to have everything and even more then outlook
express built in to a small package. It's going to take a while to setup but
the program will import virtually everything you already have in either
outlook, Eudora, and outlook express for starters. It's a lot of car to
drive, but since I like a reasonable challenge I'm going to work on it some
more myself. In fact it seems to be enough of a program that it could
completely become your main email client. I can tell you it does have the
capability to assume the roll of your primary email program just so you
know.

[JAWS-Users] updates to the web site

2007-04-18 Thread David A Ferrin

I've just added a couple of programs under the internet heading, and I've
also added the thunderbird portable email client up there as well. Like I
said folks, it's a lot of car to drive, but the program seems to have it all
and more. I might do an audio tutorial on it in the near future after and
assuming I become more proficient with the program myself. I figure before I
can do such a thing it requires more than just a passing understanding of
the program.

[JAWS-Users] Re: XP Start menu;

2007-04-18 Thread David A Ferrin

Why in the world would I mind you or anybody at all offering suggestions?
Never give it another thought my friend. I created this list so I could
learn new things myself along with sharing what ever information that I
already accumulated over the years. I've picked up many a tip over time from
beginners and more advanced people than myself. The fact is you never know
where or from who your next bit of information may come from. This programs
sub menu off of the start menu I've always considered a little quirk and
have never given it much thought is all. It's got something to do with
having quite a number of items on my to do list that take priority. Of
course if somebody comes up with the answer then I sure will take note of it
and possibly post same on the web.

If you would look just below skype 2.5 you will find 3.1 what ever the
 rest
of it is. Also the notation that scripts are available means go to the
scripts page and you will find them there.

I notice the version of skype on the site is 2.5. Skype 3.1
works very well with the scripts I have. Could this be updated.
I have the scripts if anyone wants them. If you want a copy
 please write me off list.
 Thanks for reading.

[JAWS-Users] Re: JFW8 Update

2007-04-18 Thread David A Ferrin

Kerry, look in the explore my settings sub menu of your particular version
of jaws. Once in there obviously keep hitting the letter D until you land on
the default files. In other words they wish you to delete files that you
have modified yourself thus restoring their original default configuration
settings. Unfortunately this means any changes in there will need to be
reapplied.

Back in February, when the public beta for JFW came out, I downloaded and
installed and immediately started having some issues. One such was a
message which came up whenever I did a JFW say all in microsoft outlook
telling me about a conflict with magic running. I don't even own a copy of
magic.
I reset the machine to the orinigla jfw8 and then a strange started to
happen. When using the realspeak voices, jfw would not switch voices for
the jaws cursor.
I lived with it for a while and only yesterday when I contacted FS about the
problem, they advised that I should again upgrade to the newest release
which came out in April.

I've now got the same problem when reading email and though I tried to
follow the instructions followed last time, they're not working.
FS told me to delete the default.jsb and default.jss files, but I can't seem
to locate the second. does anyone have any suggestions?

[JAWS-Users] Re: JFW8 Update

2007-04-18 Thread David A Ferrin

Those are the correct places to look all right, besides the JSB file is the
only one that jaws is interested in. It's the binary compilation of the
original source code converted in to machine language. It looks like more
research needs to be done in this area before further advice can be given
out, sorry for now.

I've added another cleaning type program along with a time setting program.
They may be found under the internet heading. In fact they are the first two

have a number of other files to place up there, it's just a matter of
plugging away at the mound.

[JAWS-Users] thunderbird portable

2007-04-16 Thread David A Ferrin

Well I'm taking this program around the block right now so to speak, and
here are a couple of first impressions for anybody who's interested.
It's a bit more work to setup but that seems to be because this program
is much more fully featured than pop corn at least at first glance. I'm
far from making a final vote on it, but it does seem to do everything
and even more then I expected it would. It even has a spell checker
which is a plus for somebody like me for sure.
