[JAWS-Users] installing real speak

2008-08-12 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
Owing to certain circumstances, I used jaws 8 for a while, but did not
install the real speak voices that came with it. I then recieved my jaws 9
SMA upgrade. However, this was one CD, not two. Because my school has the
CDs, I downloaded the upgrade from the internet. Thus, I haven't had a
chance to explore the jaws 9 SMA upgrade CD yet. What I want to know is, if
that CD doesn't have real speak on it, Can I install the real speak voices
that came with jaws 8?
thanks in advance for any help,
from Andrew

Re: [JAWS-Users] could someone please help me withfrenchandspanishaccent symbals please?

2008-08-12 Thread Griffiths, Steve
Here are a couple of other options you may want to explore.

In Word, the following keystrokes can be used to insert French or Spanish
characters):
Control + apostrophe, e gives é
Control + grave, e gives è
Control + comma, c gives ç
Control + Shift + #, n gives ñ
Those are the ones I know about - are there more accented characters you need?

Only the first of these works for me in Outlook 2003. I don't have Word as my
e-mail editor and if I change the setting so it is, all the above keystrokes
work in Outlook too.

If you intend to use these other languages a lot, you can add the ability to
switch your keyboard language between English, French and Spanish. This has
far-reaching effects, for instance with it set to French, the top line of the
main part of the keyboard, which in English contains the numbers, has these
characters in place of numbers 1 to 0: é ' ( - è _ ç à

I haven't tested the following with JAWS, but can see no reason why it should
be a problem. To add another language to your keyboard, go to Control Panel,
Regional and Language options, Languages page. Use the Details button to open
another dialogue and use the Add button to select the language you want. Note
that Spanish Spanish is listed as Spanish (Traditional sort).

Once you have more than one language set up, you can switch between them with
Alt + Shift.

After I told you about the JAWS symbol to print dialogue, I told you about
the insert symbols - special - dialogue in Microsoft word, which also gives
the keystrokes for them. Basically, an accent sign is often formed by
pressing a key with the alt and ctrl keys together, and these together with
the shift key to form the grave accent version. Thus, we can have _Buenos
_días, _SeÑor in Spanish, correctly accented! (Con apologias, I have a
wrong accent sign in that mix.)

You'll find many of them listed when you go down the JAWSKey+4 select a
symbol to print list. Also, they are included in the Insert Special
Symbols dialogue in the Insert menu of Microsoft word. Know that a grave
accent is a shifted acute accent, so that ANSI225 is a-acute whilst
 ANSI193
 is A-Grave. the Spanish tilde-n is ansi241 and ANSI209.

Here are a couple of other options you may want to explore.

In Word, the following keystrokes can be used to insert French or Spanish
characters):
Control + apostrophe, e gives é
Control + grave, e gives è
Control + comma, c gives ç
Control + Shift + #, n gives ñ
Those are the ones I know about - are there more accented characters you
need?

Only the first of these works for me in Outlook 2003. I don't have Word as
my e-mail editor and if I change the setting so it is, all the above
keystrokes work in Outlook too.

If you intend to use these other languages a lot, you can add the ability to
switch your keyboard language between English, French and Spanish. This has
far-reaching effects, for instance with it set to French, the top line of
the main part of the keyboard, which in English contains the numbers, has
these characters in place of numbers 1 to 0: é ' ( - è _ ç à

I haven't tested the following with JAWS, but can see no reason why it
should be a problem. To add another language to your keyboard, go to Control
Panel, Regional and Language options, Languages page. Use the Details button
to open another dialogue and use the Add button to select the language you
want. Note that Spanish Spanish is listed as Spanish (Traditional sort).

Once you have more than one language set up, you can switch between them
with Alt + Shift.

[JAWS-Users] Need help fixing something in jaws

2008-08-12 Thread Christy Walker
Hi there all.
Well, I forget what I did but I checked the windows state checked in jaws
options.. However now it says submenu in front of submenus.
Like for instance I have classic start menu and it says submenu settings.
I want to have it where it says settings submenu and not submenu settings.
Is there a way I can fix this?

 use

To do this, hit alt j to bring up the jaws menu. Go down to the language

Hi Steve,

Could you let me know what type and how many key keyboard you are using? It
sounds interesting and also sounds like it has a lot more functionality than
my MS Ergonomic 101/102 key keyboard. I would truly appreciate any
information you can provide me with. Thanks much. Mike

Steve, you mean three to the right don't you? The key three to the left of
the letter l is surely the h key.

On my keyboard, the key three to the left of the letter l is marked with the
# symbol. Hold down the Control and Shift keys together and tap this key,
then let go of all three keys and tap n to get ñ.

The grave key is to the left of the number 1, and above the Tab key.

For circumflex, press Control + Shift + 6, e to get ê

[JAWS-Users] Jaws and Windows Media Edition

2008-08-12 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

Is there any version of Jaws that will work with Windows Media Edition?

I seem to recall that the pro version did something with it, but I can't
remember if that something was worth taking into consideration or not. Smile.

In any case, a friend of mine is having trouble with her computer, and she
asked me for help.

When I loaded Jaws 9 on it, I found I was having trouble getting focus on
things, and keystrokes weren't the same. For example, when I would go to get
the windows list with insert+F10, it was like I pressed Jaws key+H, to get
available Windows hotkeys, and the help topic for hotkeys with windows would
pop up.

Needless to say, I was really frustrated by the time I was finished, and I'm
not even finished, as there were, at last count, 798 viruses on her computer.

Now, now, I know that those are probably spyware and viruses lumped together,
but regardless if it is or not, I need to remove that for her, especially if
she wants her kids to use the computer.

So, the question still stands, is there a version that will work with Media
Edition, and if so, which one is it?

Thanks all for your help.

I think JAWS Pro only authorizes your version of JAWS for all versions of
Windows, including XP (all versions), 2000, Vista (all versions). Someone

I've got the newest version of JAWS and still had trouble with FF3 as I said

button quit working with it and I was getting page load errors when the
 address
was fine. I never saw a page load error just go away by itself and be
 replaced
by what I had typed in until today. The problems were getting worse and
 worse.
It will be a lot easier to use my find function now too. I found out that
 the
reason we were able to use control f with JAWS was that there was an IE
 find
add-on. It was incapatible with FF 3. Insert control f is a lot harder
 to
reach and when you're in a super big hurry and forget you need to push the
insert key too it's quite anoying. Enough whining. My problem is solved.

[JAWS-Users] Switching between languages

2008-08-12 Thread Diana Engle
Hi, all. I knew that I would learn a lot from this list, and I've only been
lurking for about a week. :)

Glad to see there are folks knowledgeable about languages other than English.
Here's my two-part question:

1. Is there any easy way to switch between languages in JAWS? I know the
progression of keyboard commands to do this (INS+J, ALT+L, S, A or L, for me),
but does there exist a single command? Can I program a hot key? Is this a
scripting project?

2. I've heard that JAWS is supposed to automatically switch languages when a
new language is detected...but what are the conditions? I have JAWS set for
American English, but when I get on sites like www.comcast.terra.com and
www.univision.com, JAWS reads Spanish as if it were English.

BTW, I have JAWS 9.0, running on XP Home.

Thanks!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Windows Media Edition

2008-08-12 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Aiden,

So with that in mind, as the saying goes, where's the beef?

Like I said, not only were there focus issues when I was using the computer,
but the hotkeys were all messed up. Insert+F10 to bring up the window list,
and got help instead, and don't even get me started on trying to close a
window, the damn thing just wasn't having it.

Alt+F4 didn't work no matter what I tried.

All of this leads me to believe that there was some kind of focus issue
working there, but again, that doesn't explain the window list keystroke and
getting help instead.

Now, I didn't take into account the fact that the keyboard was a multi-media
keyboard, where the six pack was vertically placed on the keyboard, and the
function keys, 1 through 12 were grouped in numbers of 3, instead of what
I'm used to with four, but I don't think that should make a difference,
after all, F10 is F10, no matter how the keys are packed together.

Unless, these were not function keys at all, but I think the sighted lady
would have told me, but not necessarily if she didn't know I was looking for
it.

Sorry folks, just thinking out loud. Smile.

In any case, can anyone shed some light on this.

 Hi all,
Owing to certain circumstances, I used jaws 8 for a while, but did not
install the real speak voices that came with it. I then recieved my jaws
 9
SMA upgrade. However, this was one CD, not two. Because my school has the
CDs, I downloaded the upgrade from the internet. Thus, I haven't had a

 if
that CD doesn't have real speak on it, Can I install the real speak

Re: [JAWS-Users] Switching between languages

2008-08-12 Thread David Ferrin
No I'm afraid that is the hotkey for changing languages. So far as web pages
are concerned the author has to specify what language the page should be in
with the HTML code used to create it. Personally I do not know how to do
that myself, mainly because English is the only language I can read.

Thank you, David. I hadn't known of that hotkey and like it. :)

What if I were a super-impatient person, though, who would like to switch
immediately between two designated languages without going first to a
 language menu? Are there options?

On the other question of switching languages detected in a web site--what
does designed correctly mean specifically? The sites I cited (sorry!)
are both full Spanish-language sites. Can you clarify for me?

 Thanks!

[JAWS-Users] New List Member Question About Outlook

2008-08-12 Thread Jay Pilkington
Hi folks,

I have been using JAWS for over ten years now. I have been using Outlook
Express, but recently I have been urged by friends and family to try Outlook
and take advantage of the task list and the calendar functions.

Does anyone have any success with getting the JAWS position information to
work. You know, when you have a list of emails and when you give a read
current line command it says something like

email from John Smith 10 of 32

Let me know.

  Hi, Christy,
Reading help balloons in JAWS 9 sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I
know that isn't really much of an answer, but it just doesn't work perfectly
  yet.

Well I've done what was suggested of me.
I made sure that read tooltips were checked in jaws. However, jaws still

   What am I doing wrong?

Re: [JAWS-Users] new computer

2008-08-12 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Alan,

You didn't mention how much ram the computer will have, nor what video card
will be running in it. It would also be a good thing to mention what type
of sound card, if any, will you be running, and any extra software that
might be included in the mix.

In my humble opinion, these are the major factors when considering whether
Jaws will work well on a new computer.

I would also note that since you are getting XP Pro, you'll have to upgrade
to Jaws pro, so you might want to take that into consideration when
purchasing.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Windows Media Edition

For example, when I would go to
get the windows list with insert+F10, it was like I pressed Jaws key+H, to
get available Windows hotkeys, and the help topic for hotkeys with windows
 would pop up.

Needless to say, I was really frustrated by the time I was finished, and
I'm not even finished, as there were, at last count, 798 viruses on her
 computer.

Now, now, I know that those are probably spyware and viruses lumped
together, but regardless if it is or not, I need to remove that for her,
especially if she wants her kids to use the computer.

So, the question still stands, is there a version that will work with
Media Edition, and if so, which one is it?

 Thanks all for your help.
