Hi Kathy & Kurt,

Thank you. When I can't find replies easily, & I have to go search for
them, the delete key is my 1st option. As far as her install, I've heard of
Jaws stalling in the middle, but Kathy didn't mention how long the install
is stalling for. Also, Kathy are you using your J17 disk, or using a saved
J17 executable? Another problem could be your internet connection.
Take care.

[JAWS-Users] weird windows 10 nightmares

2016-08-29 Thread Marvin Hunkin
Hi. had to do a jaws repair, as it stops speaking, and got the august
update, so got the latest version. Had to do a sfc scannow, said it found
corrupted files, but could not repair. Is there a tool to repair my files.
Don't want to reset or reinstall windows 10 64 bit pro. Pasting the details
of my machine below. And now, still waiting for the windows 10 annivesary
update, in Australia. Did try to force the update, but lost my audio, and
had to get disability answerdesk with sighted help remote into my machine,
roll back to windows 7, then back to windows 1511, latest update, and last
week, got a sql service pack 1, so windows update is working, but real
weird, decided to take 10 or 15 minutes, checking for updates, and then said
my device was up to date. Tried the dism restore health command, as a admin
in cmd, and have a admin account. So, doing another scan, and waiting for
that, so is there any tools to fix corrupted files, looked at the support
area for my Toshiba, and windows 10, and the only update or tool is a
wireless lan adaptor. So, any one in the same predicament.

Will paste below.

Marvin.

Ps: so, just waiting for the update, and almost a month.

No one else has got it, and trying to find out info, is like pulling hen's
teeth, if any one has got any update info, did e-mail the ceo of Microsoft,
but not heard back from him.

Any experts here.

In networking, etc.

Marvin.

I'll tell you now because it's time for me to get ready for dinner, so if
you don't have any sound, the following should work in Windows 8.1 as well
as 7:

press the windows key and the letter R to call up the run dialog.
type sndvol and press the Enter key.
wait about 5 to 10 seconds and press the Tab key once.
press the Spacebar. this will unmute the main volume.
press the escape key or Alt+F4 if you wish.

Mario,

Your "CAD" example shows another anomaly. On my system, it's pronounced
as "cad," as in a disreputable man, even though written in all caps. I
wonder why yours says "Canada."

The larger problem you raise is one that applies across the board,
regardless of capitalization. The JAWS default for "Dr" is "Drive,"
presumably because FS figured it would come up most often inn addresses.
I've changed the pronunciation to "doctor." Ditto "St" is set by FS by
default as "Street," but it could also mean "saint."

Then there's the "read" problem, with the present and past tense
pronounced differently but spelled the same. In this last example,
however, FS must have figured out an algorithm because most of the time
JAWS pronounces it correctly when used in the past tense and also when
used in the present tense.

These problems must have beset creators of speech engines in the early days.

abbreviation that you don't want the facility to interpret. how would it
be handled, maybe with an exclusion rule?

I do believe the Kurzweil 1K has such a facility, but sometimes a
passage has an abbreviation that is not what it is commonly associated
with. for example, when ever WA is encountered, K1K says Washington, but
I don't want that. K1K should say W A, the way it appears.

another example, CAD is encountered and is pronounced as Canada instead
of C A D as in computer aided design.

Mike,

The potential problem with such a setting would be that many headings
and other text would also be spelled out. The only setting that comes to
mind is in the JAWS settings center that enables reading uppercase
letters when JAWS reads by line, word or character. The default is caps
announced only when reading by character. If you want to change that
default, go to the settings center with (as you know) JAWS key+6 on the
number row above the letter, then type "capitalization" into the edit
field. In the results that appear below, only one option is displayed.
Press spacebar to cycle through the options. Tab to and click on apply
and okay.

other text would also be spelled out. The only setting that comes to mind is
in the JAWS settings center that enables reading uppercase letters when JAWS
reads by line, word or character. The default is caps announced only when
reading by character. If you want to change that default, go to the settings
center with (as you know) JAWS key+6 on the number row above the letter,
then type "capitalization" into the edit field. In the results that appear
below, only one option is displayed. Press spacebar to cycle through the
options. Tab to and click on apply and okay.

Hi All,

Running J16, but I think my question will apply to almost all Jaws versions.
What Jaws setting will tell Jaws to say the letters of a word in all
capitolized letters rather than pronounce an all caps word as a word?
Example: SUV, Jaws pronounce it as a word, & would like for Jaws to say, S
U V. Or, NY, & to have Jaws say, N Y. Thanks much.

Take care.

Was the computer successfully connected to the Internet when you entered the
authorization code? It needs to be, since the authorization process occurs
online.

How would you modify the dictionary manager? Yes, I use the dictionary to spell
out abbreviations I come across most often, the way you illustrate in your
original post in this thread. But you seem to have something more grand in mind.

Hi Adrian,

I've been that route, & tried several others. I've come to the conclusion that
what I want to do will only be possible by modifying the default dictionary
manager. I didn't state what different settings I had tried because I wanted
to make sure I didn't overlook anything, & turn my question into a short story.
Thank you very much for your input.
Take care.

Mike,

The potential problem with such a setting would be that many headings and other
text would also be spelled out. The only setting that comes to mind is in the
JAWS settings center that enables reading uppercase letters when JAWS reads by
line, word or character. The default is caps announced only when reading by
character. If you want to change that default, go to the settings center with
(as you know) JAWS key+6 on the number row above the letter, then type
"capitalization" into the edit field. In the results that appear below, only
one option is displayed. Press spacebar to cycle through the options. Tab to

Hey bro,
The dictionary manager would probably be your safest bet.
