Re: [JAWS-Users] User Account Control Settings, Setting it to Zero
Hi Mike, Note that in Windows 8 and 10, unlike in Windows 7, when you set UAC to 0% you stop the dialog from appearing but, instead of disabling UAC to run everything as administrator by default as in Windows XP and prior versions, the UAC will automatically deny these permisions for programs trying to write, delete or modify something in a folder requiring administrator privileges different to the one in which the executable is stored. You can use scripts or group policies to disable UAC in Windows 10, but some things like some UWP apps and special shell extensions will not work properly, for a reason I don't know why. However, when you make changes in the UAC slider and press the OK button, a UAC confirmation will appear in a secure desktop, therefore JAWS will take a few seconds before speaking, and it could speak nothing if you have your current JAWS version disabled in the Ease of Access Center. When this dialog appear, simply answer the confirmation as any other UAC dialog. Although is less safe, you can also configure UAC to display confirmations in a window on your user's desktop instead of a secure one, so you don't need to wait until JAWS switches its response to the secure desktop. Hope it helps a bit! -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-ListOn Behalf Of Mike B. That's unusual, Try below commands, Make sure to run the command prompt as administrator. Disable UAC: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f Re enable UAC: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f You need to re boot your system for that to take effect. Re: [JAWS-Users] FS Reader And Page Numbers, Followup
Rebecca, Yes, I'd read the documentation and had high hopes that were soon dashed. However, in the past I'd also noticed that the "go to" command verbalized a page number. so on getting your message just now, I tried it on the Bookshare book I'm currently reading. No luck. JAWS just said something like 000. That was odd. I opened another book and tried control-g there. This time it verbalized the current page number. So, as you suggest, book producers format pagination inconsistently. But when it's formatted right for a screenreader, control-g is the answer. Too bad that I would find it helpful in my current book. Thanks for your determination or stubbornness. Whichever it is, it gets results. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-ListOn Behalf Of Rebecca Lineberger Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2018 9:18 PM To: jaws user's list Subject: [JAWS-Users] FS Reader And Page Numbers, Followup As a followup to what I wrote below, in Kurzweil's defense, FS Reader would not open the long Daisy book that Kurzweil could not open. Back to plan b,c, or d? Smile. Rebecca Hello Adrian, Call it determination or just stubbornness, smile, but I think I've found a work-around for determining where you are when using FS Reader. I downloaded a Daisy book from Bookshare and unzipped it. FS Reader opened it and the book was easily navigated, with links and headings, just as in a web page. There didn't seem to be page numbers at the bottom or top of pages when I used the page-down key, so I tried the go to page command, control-g. At first, I just typed in a page number and pressed enter, and after a pause, was taken there. Then, after paying a bit more attention to what I was hearing in the go to page dialogue, smile, I realized that it indeed gives you the page number of your current location-which is exactly what you wanted. So just press control-g and it will say 30, 41 of 356, for example, because the introductory pages which are numbered with Roman numbers are included in the total count. If all you want is the current page number, press escape and you're back to the text. I have to thank you for forcing me to try something new. Sometines needing to teach something is the best way to learn oneself! LOL. There have been occasions where my older version of Kurzweil could not open a very long book. I'll now have to try those with FS Reader. Initially at first glance though, FS has done a nice job with this, and it may give me access to books I could not get my ears around before. I'd even played with opening epub books, they open automatically in Edge, but I still find them cumbersome. . HTH. Re: [JAWS-Users] Serious Problem Since Doing Latest Jaws 2018 Update
Leonard: I should have been clearer about a few points in my earlier update. I did try Narrator and NVDA, and experienced the same sluggishness and speaker static issues. I also experienced them with earlier versions of Jaws. Fortunately, I've been working on things now for about a half hour, and everything seems to be back to normal. Not sure why checking the control sound configurations and re-doing the docking station interface could have solved the problem, but I seem to be ok once again. Re: [JAWS-Users] Serious Problem Since Doing Latest Jaws 2018 Update
Well, you might be right. I had some sighted assistance a little while ago. We went into the control panel and checked on a few of the sound card settings. After that, things improved slightly. Then, I took the computer out of the docking station I use, and put it back in. Now the computer seems to be functioning much more normally. Don't know what might have happened. All I know is that the problems I had earlier occurred after the latest Jaws update. Whether or not the update is truly related to what I experienced is still unclear to me. Perhaps the update temporarily messed with some sound card or other configurations. Tom, Unless you've tried it already, I'd complete uninstall JAWS 2018 to get back to an earlier version and determine that you've solved the problem. Then install an earlier version (you do keep all the files, don't you?) of JAWS 2018 and avoid the latest build. [JAWS-Users] FS Reader And Page Numbers
Hello Adrian, Call it determination or just stubbornness, smile, but I think I've found a work-around for determining where you are when using FS Reader. Press "windows plus R" to open the run box, type: shell:appsfolder Then hit inter. Now in the opened folder look for "Microsoft Store" and press the applications key on it. select "pin to start" from that menu and hit inter. Re: [JAWS-Users] vlc and dvd/cds
VLC 3.0 added a feature to play media within zip and iso formats without extracting them. The whey to fix that is re installing it with custom option and uncheck the iso and zip file format from the file association menu options before finishing the installation procedure. BTW the vlc preferences options does include file association menu, but I don't think its that accessible. They're difficult, but not impossible. It would be nice if they worked better. Re: [JAWS-Users] FSReader; how to locate page numbers
Hello Adrian, I've not used FS Reader other than to read the JAWS documentation. This is not exactly what you're looking for, but it was all I could find when searching the documentation, information which I'm sure you've already seen. Beginning with JAWS 15 and MAGic 13, for DAISY books that have text, the text of the books appear in HTML, or Web page format, in the document pane of FSReader. The document pane is located on the right side of the window, and the left side of the window contains a tree view for navigating in the book by headings, chapters, pages, and so on, depending on how the book is structured by the author. The new user interface has the following items, starting at the top of the window: Title bar - This is where the title of the book you are currently reading is displayed, and it is the top row of the window. Menu bar Tool bar - This has buttons for mouse users to click. These functions are all accessible with the keyboard by using hot keys or menu commands. Navigation pane - This is located on the left side of the FSReader window. It contains a tree view for navigating by headings, chapters, pages, or whatever unit the author of the book used in the book creation process. And this: The Navigation menu contains the following items: Bookmarks submenu Set bookmark, CTRL+B View bookmarks, CTRL+K Go to page, CTRL+G Search submenu Find, CTRL+F Find next, F3 Find previous, SHIFT+F3 I use Kurzweil for reading books from Bookshare. The help key there acts as a sort of status bar, giving you page x of y pages. Depending on whether the information was retained when the book was scanned, page numbers may appear at the bottoms or tops of pages. Also, depending on how the book was scanned, it may have pages, which will work with a next or previous page command, as well as a go to page command, but it seems that often, especially with the "publisher quality" eBooks, the book will have been formatted so that it has only one page. There are usually bookmarks embedded in the document, but again, that does not truly speak to your question as to finding specific location. I haven't played with the FS Reader enough to make informed comments. Sorry this was not very helpful. Perhaps someone else has more information. Well, I understand what you mean, but as someone who started using PCs in the days when people still used dos 4.2, and as a blind user, it seems to me logical that sometimes the GUI will not be as nice and convenient as the command line. I admit the syntax of certain things can be daunting, and like most people I have come to use the GUI 99% of the time. But you know, sometimes, only the command line will suffice. I use it all the time for instance for formatting drives. I also created a powershell line that generates a number of random filenames when I want to pick a m movie to watch and can't really decide for myself. I did this when after lots of searching I could not find a GUI program that did exactly what I wanted. Windows also comes with a number of useful command line tools, like "takeown", which is much faster and easier way of taking ownership of key system files rather than messing around with the not-totally-friendly security properties dialog box. I always say to everyone that if you can find a quick command line way to do things, it's usually more efficient. But it sounds like you know this already and I don't need to say anything. Haha. Command line is not that popular you know, That's why I prefer not talking about it myself, if it is not a must use case. Although a batch script to do the whole task for more convenient set of hotkeys, could be a good idea. Even if it requires more digging. I believe its worth it.
