Afternoon all.

Using JAWS 2018, Windows 10 and WLM, I was wondering if, with the new email
list, will I need to do anything in order to send messages to the new list,
or will they be automatically sent there. Thanks in advance.

Hi David,

It won't be necessary to unsubscribe from the old list, to the best of my
knowledge anyways. Did you get the confirmation email from the Groups.io
Jaws-Users List? Here is the new message post email address for the new
list, just in case.

I'm have been unsuccessful in subscribing? Thanks for any advice,

Even though I have participated on this particular list minimally as a
contributor, I also vote for integrating the list with the existing JAWS
for Windows Users Group on the Groups.io e-mail list/online forum. No
purpose is served by having multiple JAWS user groups. It's one thing, for
instance, to have specialist groups like the JAWS scripting group, but if
one is looking to bring end users together the idea should be reaching the
largest audience in a single place.

For anyone who's curious, send an e-mail message to the Help e-mail address
listed below. You can also visit the group homepage, as Groups.io is a
hybrid service that combines an e-mail interface and also has a web
interface, at: https://jfw.groups.io/g/main
The topics forum/archive can be viewed online by anyone at

   - Help: main+h...@jfw.groups.io

If you also happen to be a user of Windows 10 and a screen reader, consider
joining the group for just that demographic:

Personally, I'd love to see the JAWS for Windows, NVDA, and Windows 10 for
Screen Reader Users groups "fused." There is very little that goes on in
any one of them that doesn't have partial or total cross-over interest for
the other. In addition, Groups.io gives you an exquisite level of control
over just what e-mail messages you will get from any group of which you're
a member. See:

. The ALT+SHIFT+ARROW keystrokes to move the mouse pointer now only work

reorder notebook/section/page lists in OneNote.
. Added updated scripts provided by Corel for WordPerfect Office X9.
. Made additional changes requested by Foxit for their PhantomPDF software
including the ability for JAWS to begin reading automatically once the PDF
document
is loaded.
. Resolved issues with a JAWS repair not working as expected for some users.

Microsoft Office
list of 14 items
. Addressed reported issues with JAWS becoming sluggish while navigating
certain forms created in Word.
. Addressed issues with JAWS not properly announcing content controls in
unprotected Word documents such as forms or templates.
. JAWS now detects inline images in Word.
. Addressed an issue with JAWS not reading as expected when spell checking a
document in Word (build 9020 and later).
. In Word (build 9020 or later), when pressing the APPLICATIONS key on a
misspelled word and then choosing "See More", resolved an issue where JAWS
focus
was not moving to the correct pane.
. Addressed a reported issue in Word where you could not move past an
equation in a table using the TAB key.
. When F1 is pressed in Word to open Help, addressed a customer reported
issue where you could not read the help content using the ARROW keys as
expected.
. Resolved an issue with Outlook closing unexpectedly when opening certain

. Resolved an issue with the JAWS tutor help messages for buttons in the
Outlook Preview Pane.
. Addressed an issue for a customer using the iManage FileSite plugin with
Outlook where JAWS was not reading items in certain folders.
. If an object on a PowerPoint slide contains SmartArt, pressing INSERT+F1
to display screen-sensitive help will now also include the full shape

issue where JAWS was not indicating that you were on a new slide.
. Resolved a reported issue with JAWS becoming sluggish while navigating a
particular spreadsheet in Excel.

autocomplete, and data validation lists were not working as expected with
speech or braille.

list of 13 items
. When using Navigation Quick Keys in Edge to move to various elements
including buttons, lists, and tables, resolved an issue where the Virtual
Cursor
was not always being placed at the beginning of the element as expected.
. When navigating by character in Edge and you encounter a button, JAWS now
indicates when you enter and leave the button element if it supports
navigation
by character.
. Improved navigating lists containing links in Edge.
. JAWS now correctly identifies Same Page and MailTo links in Firefox 60 and
later.
. Resolved issues with opening a context menu using the APPLICATIONS key or
Right Mouse Click not working as expected in Firefox 60.
. In Firefox, resolved an issue where it was not possible to activate a link
containing a heading.
. JAWS now supports the and HTML tags in ContentEditable
elements in Google Chrome. These tags can be used to indicate revisions in
an edit
field.
. JAWS now supports the HTML tag in Chrome which defines a scale or
measurement within a known range, or a fractional value.
. Added support for the ARIA-roledescription property in Firefox and Chrome.
. Addressed an issue with Internet Explorer reported by the Social Security
Administration where some radio button groups were being announced twice by
JAWS.
. Unlabeled forms are no longer included in region navigation using the R
and SHIFT+R Navigation Quick Keys. In addition, the start of end of
unlabeled
form regions is no longer announced as you navigate using the ARROW keys.
. The start and end announcements for document and application regions are
now off by default at all web verbosity levels. In addition, the start and
end
of frame elements is only announced by default when JAWS is set to High web
verbosity. To further customize what is spoken, open Settings Center, search
for "web verbosity", and then choose Configure Verbosity Levels. You can

Good morning all;

one of my client's decided to download and install the google chrome. he's
using jaws 17, and windows 7.

he reports, when he open's google chrome everything is fine, however, he's
trying to setup his homepage, thus, when going into the google chrome
settings, alt+f=file, then arrow's down to settings, when he presses enter,
the jaws goes silent.

has anyone experienced this? if so, is there a solution? perhaps jaws17
doesn't work well with the chrome latest version.

in advance, thanks for the help.

steps for getting your authorization code didn't work on my Windows 10
system, so you might have to call Freedom Scientific / VFO and they will
tell you your code. Their phone number is:

Code retrieval steps:
From: Gene Warner
Hi Everyone!

Ignore my previous question, I found it, and in doing so, may have found
a way for Adam to get his full authorization code, at least it worked
for me. This will only work on an already activated copy of JAWS.

Steps:

1. If you're running Jaws from the system tray, press the JAWS key + the J
key, for me it is Insert+J, to open the Jaws context menu.

2. Go to the help sub menu.

3. Go to the Update authorization option

4. You'll get a dialog with several buttons, click the Start
Authorization button.

5. In this dialog, choose manual activation, then click next.

6. In this next dialog there is a read only field with your locking
code, and two input fields, one has your entire authorization code, the
other is for your license code or serial number.

7. Copy the authorization code, then cancel out of the dialog.

Hi Jeff,

Check out the following, and how to permanently disable sticky keys is at

Do you want to turn on Sticky Keys?
Sticky Keys lets you use the SHIFT, CTRL, ALT, or Windows Logo keys by

In Windows 10 do the following to permanently disable sticky keys:
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Navigate to the Ease of Access Center, and press enter to open.
3. Tab several times to, Make the keyboard easier to use, link, and press

Re: [JAWS-Users] changing folders to list or detail view

2018-07-08 Thread Mike B.
Hi Ted,

Read this description of the View Menu keystrokes , and I think it'll answer
your question.
From: Brian Lee
You use CTRL with shift key and 8 you go into the content view. If you use
up and down arrow keys in this view you will only here the name of the file
and the right and left arrow keys will do nothing. You can read the current
line to get other header information. If you use CTRL with shift and 6 you
go into the details view. In the details view you hear one file at a time
but you can use the right arrow key to get more header information. One of
these views might be what you are wanting.

The numbers 1 through 8 go with the CTRL and shift keys to change views.
The numbers go in the order of the icons in the view menu as follows:

CTRL + SHIFT + 1 Extra Large icons,
CTRL + SHIFT + 2 Large Icons,
CTRL + SHIFT + 3 Medium Icons,
CTRL + SHIFT + 4 Small Icons,
CTRL + SHIFT + 5 List view,
CTRL + SHIFT + 6 Details view,
CTRL + SHIFT + 7 Tiles view,
CTRL + SHIFT + 8 Content view.
Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Creating a new folder

2018-07-06 Thread Mike B.
Hi Linda,

Try the following:
1. Make sure nothing is selected by pressing, control + spacebar, this is
very important.
2. Open your context menu by pressing the applications / context menu key
or shift + F10 arrow down to, New, and press enter.
3. Choose folder from there and press enter. Type the foldername and then
press enter again.
You should now have your new folder.

I have QuickBooks and I am having trouble with it. If someone can help me,

I am using Windows 10 and Office 365. the other thing I am trying to do,
which used to be easy, is create a new folder in Word. I have read the help
topics and just can't get the answer I need. It talks about "sliding your

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS volume and Eloquence

2018-07-04 Thread Mike B.
Howdy JM,

Try checking your Audio Ducking settings. I don't have my Widows 10
computer accessible to me at the moment, but I believe you need to go into
Settings Center, then press, control, shift , + D, to open the Settings
Center default all applications. I believe it's in the, User folder, and
it's listed as, Lower the volume of other programs while jaws is speaking.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS volume and Eloquence

Hey everyone.

I'm using Windows 10 and JAWS 18. I recently switched back to the Eloquence
synth more-or-less full-time after using Vocalizer for a year. I'm quite
happy, except that I find the synth is too loud, relative to other sounds on
my system. There are no controls for volume in my JAWS options, so I went
into Windows volume mixer and turned it way down, to around 20%, which seems
a level I am happy with. Only thing is, now something strange and slightly
annoying is happening. If I don't use the voice for a little while, as in,
maybe ten seconds or more, when it starts up again, it is quite quiet, and
then gradually increases in volume. It's a small thing but I would kind of
like the volume to remain at a consistent level. I've tried experimenting
with volume levels in Windows to get the perfect balance, but it is
surprisingly difficult. In general I don't want JAWS or system sounds to
overwhelm things like media players, but everything always seems just a
little too loud or too quiet, and of course there are other factors one
always has to consider as well, such as the relative volumes of disparate
media files, which I am ok with as I'm not a fan of auto-normalisation and
such. This thing with JAWS trying to boost its own volume is strange though.

Any thoughts from the group?

The following domains are currently blocking messages from this domain
refusing delivery. There are 3 at this time but my memory is only giving me
2 right off hand. I am sure Mike will come up with the third.

Never the less the point to this message subscribers using:

sbcglobal.net
or
bellsouth.net

are not receiving anything from this domain, both list traffic and also
personal correspondence.

If any of you out there can help by contacting any such list members and
explaining the problem we would appreciate it.

They in turn need to call their ISPs to find out what they can on that end.

We have lost a lot of good members over the years because of stuff like

Hi Orlando,

Personally I'm running Windows 7 & 10 with Jaws 16 thru J2018, had to make
this a Jaws thing, & Outlook Express. When I send out text messages from my
computers I receive them back as replies to my Outlook Express In-box. I
use a different email address for my iPhone than I do for my computers, but
I can access my iPhone emails from an identity / separate account I have set
up on all my computers. I know a lot of people that don't receive voice
mail, texts, & emails because of whatever cellular or internet hiccups, so
there's no way that I will risk not receiving something important because
all my messaging is controlled by someone elses server / the cloud.

Hi all. I realize this is somewhat off topic to Jaws.
Until Sprint stopped its Google Voice integration, I had all text
messages forwarded to my Gmail account and could reply to them as I
would any other email. For those of you who use carrier domain
addresses to email texts, how do you retrieve texted responses via
email? Do you email text messages and then retrieve replies on your phones?

Hi Michele,

Use your regular email client. Texting is the same as emailing except for
instead of putting an email address into the To, CC, or BCC field you put
the persons cell phone number at the carrier's domain. The carrier's domain
is the, @vtext.com, for Verizon as an example.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Lenovo and jaws

2018-06-11 Thread Mike B.
Hi David,

Below are 2 different FN key layouts for Lenovo laptops. It'll take a
little experimentation, but I'm sure one of these will be what you need.

#1:
These are the F key default functions. To get the normal F key functions
you need to have FN key locked, or use the FN key with the F keys. FN key +
Escape locks / unlocks the FN key.

F1 = Mute
F2 = Volume Down
F3 = Volume Up
F4 = Microphone Mute
F5 = Screen Brightness Down
F6 = Screen Brightness Up
F7 = External Display
F8 = WiFi On / Off
F9 = Gear Icon
F10 = Magnifying Glass
F11 & F12 = ?

#2:
f1: Mutes/unmutes the sound.

f2: Decreases the volume level.

f3: Increases the volume level.

f4: Closes the currently active window.

f5: Refreshes the desktop or the currently active window.

f6: Enables/disables the touchpad and the touchpad buttons.

f7: Enables/disables airplane mode. (Wireless)

f8: Switches the active program.

f9: Turns on/off the backlight of the display.

f10: Projects to a connected display.

f11: Decreases display brightness.

f12: Increases display brightness.

he'll have to pay full price for the SMA being he didn't buy the upgrade SMA

it'll be good for both J2018 & J2019. To be absolutely sure of his options

when I am installing trusted software, but certainly if it is a program that
is new to me.
Good luck and the computer's owner should report this to the better business
bureau. If the person is on any user lists like this one, not a bad idea to
post information about the scam.
Good luck to you both,

Hi Russ,

Yes your friend should be able to upgrade to J2018 with no problems, but,
he'll have to pay full price for the SMA being he didn't buy the upgrade SMA
prior to January 1 of this year. On the other hand, if he purchases the SMA
it'll be good for both J2018 & J2019. To be absolutely sure of his options

2018-06-08 Thread Mike B.
Hi Leonard,

If you're running Windows 10 & Jaws 2018 there's a feature called, Screen
Shade, which darkens the screen so others can't see it. This feature uses a
layered keystroke. The keystroke for the desktop layout is:
Insert / Jaws key & Spacebar, let-up then press, the Print Screen button.
This is a toggle keystroke, so it will turn the Screen Shade feature on &
off.

2018-06-07 Thread Mike B.
Hi Justin,

If your reply directly / privately to sender keystroke, Insert / Jaws key,
Shift, + R, isn't working here is a work around. If you are using Jaws you
can get the senders email address doing the
following:
1. With the email open, press, Alt + 1 on the number row, to make sure the
persons name is in the, From field.
2. If it's there press, Alt + 1, twice quickly. Pressing, Alt + 1 twice
quickly brings the focus to the, From, field.
3. Press, Control + A, to select all the text in the, From Field, or, Press
the home key to move the cursor to the beginning of the line,
press, shift + End key, that's the E N D key, to select the text from the
cursor to the end of the line, & copy this to the clipboard. i.e, example
below:

Mike B.

After copying the Name / email address, it does not have to be edited at
all. You do not need to remove the less or greater signs.
4. Now paste this into the, To, field of a new email or reply, go to the
message body, put in your message, & send as usual.

Second, again using WLM, I am having a frustrating issue. Whenever I am in

I am using JAWS 2018 and Windows 10 OS on a Dell laptop. Many thanks in

Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe To Remove Hardware Message, Possible Fix

2018-06-05 Thread Mike B.
Hi Sharon,

Well, I went to check my Windows 10computer, and I don't have that showing
any more either! LOL Beats the heck out of me where it went, but below are
the steps I used to make Jaws report the safe to remove message. I know the
steps below work in Windows 10 Pro, but I don't know if they'll work in
other versions of Windows 10. Thanks again to, Fernando, for the steps
below:

From: Fernando Gregoire
Hi Mike and all,

If the confirmation message appears on the screen but JAWS is not saying it,
perhaps it's helpful to know that in Windows 10 balloons was replaced with
toasts, which like notifications in the Action Center are handled by the
ShellExperienceHost process, too unstable like most UWP apps and areas,
unfortunately increasing.
JAWS 17 and newer have a verbosity setting concerning Windows 10
notifications, but it is not as accurate as balloon reading, which was being
developed since Windows XP.
If you have Windows 10 Pro, there's a group policy which allows to use
balloons instead of new toast notifications. Try the steps below:

1. Press WINDOWS+R, type the following and then press ENTER:

gpedit.msc

2. In the Tree view arrow down to, User Configuration, right arrow to open,
down arrow to, Administrative Templates, right arrow to open, down arrow to,
Start Menu and Taskbar.

3. When you reach Start Menu and Taskbar, tab to the list view. In the list
view, find the following policy:

Disable showing balloon notifications as toasts

4. Press ENTER to open the properties of this policy, tab to the group of
radio buttons and change from, Not Configured, to, Enabled, tab to, Okay,
and press enter.
5. When finished, restart the computer for this change to take effect.

By the way, File Explorer and other system and third-party apps which
previously shown balloons will do that exactly as in prior Windows versions,
including JAWS ability to simulate a left mouse click.

Hope it helps!
Fernando

Hi Again All,

Okay, by doing the following Jaws will report the safe to remove message,
although not consistently. I knew I had a note about this somewhere because
this also happens in Widows 7, and this is how I fixed it:
1. Windows key + I, to open Settings, Navigate to Personalization, and press
enter.
2. Go to, Taskbar, press enter, tab to, Notification Area, Select which
icons appear on the taskbar Link, and press enter.
3. Tab to, Windows host process (Rundll32) Button, press the spacebar to
check this option, and you should now hear Jaws report it's safe to
remove after pressing enter on a drive from the Safely Remove Hardware
icon.

Please let me know if the steps work for anyone else.

Press, Alt+ F, then press, T, to open Word options. You'll be in a list of

Re: [JAWS-Users] dropbox help

2018-06-04 Thread Mike B.
Hi Lenny,

This is how I would do it:
1. Zip the file and place it in the Dropbox folder.
2. Highlight the file, open the context menu using the applications key or
Shift + F10, arrow down to, Copy Dropbox Link, and press enter. This will
paste a Dropbox link to your clipboard.
3. Create a new email to whomever you're sending the file to, and paste the
Dropbox download link into the message body of the email, but you're not
through just yet! We want to change the Dropbox download link by changing 1
character. Below is an example of what we're going to do. In the link
below there's a, 0, at the end.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/94btj8w58bxdzx0/Windows%2010%20Current%20Version.txt?dl=0

What you want to do is change this, 0, to a, 1, like this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/94btj8w58bxdzx0/Windows%2010%20Current%20Version.txt?dl=1

Now when someone clicks on the download link they can choose to Run or Save
it by using their right arrow key to select the option and pressing enter on
the selected option. This way they don't have to download from the Dropbox
website and just download as they normally would.

Re: [JAWS-Users] how do i get jaws to quick announcing space marker and paragraph marker

2018-06-04 Thread Mike B.
Hi Andy,

Here are 2 ways of doing this:
#1:
Press, Alt+ F, then press, T, to open Word options. You'll be in a list of
categories. Arrow down once to
display. Then tab right and you'll eventually come across various formatting
options to
uncheck, including tabs, spaces, and then paragraph marks.

#2:
Press, Control, Shift, + 8, on the number row to toggle off the formatting.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers.

Hey, I thought I had this file from here once before also, but after looking
I moved it and don't remember where.

I spent all morning organizing and putting jaws related in folder, apple
related in a folder and so on and so on.. so if someone can help me with the
jaws keys to quit announcing space marker and paragraph marker I would
greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS Word Question

2018-05-30 Thread Mike B.
Hi Jerry,

Okay a couple of suggestions but, I don't know how well either will work.
1. With the document open open your context menu with applications key or
shift + F10, and turn off the detect table settings.
2. With the document open, open quick settings with the keystroke, Jaws key
+ V, and turn off the detect table settings.
3. Copy and paste the whole Word document into a text file. This will
remove all formatting, then you can copy & paste the file back into a new
Word document.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to get focus-40 Blue to stop panning

2018-05-30 Thread Mike B.
Hi John,

First I have to say that I don't use a Braille device but, if you go to the
Settings Center default all applications there is a Braille folder with a
Panning sub-folder, and maybe that's where you can set the settings for how
you want the device.
1. Press, Jaws key + 6, on the number row, to open the Settings Center then
press, control, shift, + D, to open the Settings Center default all
applications.
2. Arrow downto, Braille submenu and right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, General, right arrow to open.
4. Down arrow to, Panning, and right arrow to open.
That's as much as I can give you. Hope it helps.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers.

I've recently purchased a new focus-40 Braille display. I can get it to
start panning - automatically moving from one set of 40 characters to the
next - but I don't know how to get it to stop panning.

Pressing the two rockers I used to start panning does not make it stop.

Can anybody help?

The easily accessible documentation does not have this info in it; I haven't
loaded the user's manual on to my computer yet.

3. Click Power Options.
4. Click Choose what the power buttons do.
5. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Howdy Jerry,

Do you have Fast Start enabled? If this is enabled then when you shut your
computer down it doesn't really shut down, but it goes into a hibernated
state that allows the computer to wake-up & install updates, run security
scans, & whatever the Widows 10 system is supposed to do in this state.
These tasks are all scheduled and designed to do their thing when your
computer is not being used. But, if Fast Start is disabled it can't do
these scheduled tasks. So, in your case if Fast Start is not turned on in
can't wake-up to install the updates and you would have to do them manually.
If you have Fast Start enabled and the updates aren't being installed there
might be an error code message somewhere which explains why. if you do a
search using the error code number as your search criteria.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Hot Key

2018-05-28 Thread Mike B.
Hi Geoff & Cristóbal,

You can try assigning the shortcut keystroke from a different Jaws icon, and
I believe it will solve your disappearing keystroke problem. I assign my
pin to Taskbar shortcut from this Jaws icon and never have to mess with it
after a Jaws build update. Try the following:
1. Open the Start menu, navigate to the Programs folder and open it.
2. Use first letter navigation to the version of Jaws you want to assign the
shortcut keystroke to. Press the letter, J, until you reach JAWS2018, for
example.
3. With the preferred version of JAWS highlighted Press enter or right arrow
to open, up or down arrow to, JAWS, and this is the icon that you want to
use for creating the shortcut keystroke.
4. So, with the JAWS icon highlighted press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS
properties, or press the applications key or Shift + F10 to open the context
menu, and press enter on properties.
5. Assign your keystroke, tab to, Apply, press the spacebar, tab to, Okay,
and press Enter.

If you have Windows 10 Pro, there's a group policy which allow to use
balloons instead of new toast notifications.
Press WINDOWS+R, type the following and then press ENTER:
gpedit.msc
In the three view go to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Start
Menu and Taskbar.
When you reach Start Menu and Taskbar, tab to the list view.
In the list view, find the following policy:
Disable showing balloon notifications as toasts

Press ENTER to open properties of this policy, tab to the group of radio
buttons and change from Not Configured to Enabled, and press OK or ENTER.
When finished, restart the computer for this change to take effect.

By the way, File Explorer and other system and third-party apps which
previously shown balloons will do that exactly as in prior Windows versions,
including JAWS ability to simulate a left mouse click.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe To Remove Hardware Message

2018-05-26 Thread Mike B.
Hi Rebecca,

Thank you for your reply. Would you try the steps below to see if they'll
work for you?
Okay, by doing the following Jaws will report the safe to remove message,
although not consistently. I knew I had a note about this somewhere because
this also happens in Widows 7, and this is how I fixed it:
1. Windows key + I, to open Settings, Navigate to Personalization, and press
enter.
2. Go to, Taskbar, press enter, tab to, Notification Area, Select which
icons appear on the taskbar Link, and press enter.
3. Tab to, Windows host process (Rundll32) Button, press the spacebar to
check this option, and you should now hear Jaws report it's safe to

Hello Mike.
I'm running Windows 10, 1803, with JAWS 2018, May update.
I recently noticed that when I go to the system tray to remove a drive, I no
longer receive the message that it's safe to remove the drive.
Another friend called me yesterday with the same issue. I just assume that
it's safe. If I go back to the system tray before removing the drive, the
option to remove it shows as unavailable, as it should.
I don't know how to capture or replay those fleeting messages with JAWS. If
I virtualize the window, JAWS says there's no text. I haven't had a sighted
person look at the screen.
I can use the context menu on the drive, but again, I get no spoken message.
On another matter, has anyone else seen multiple copies of JAWS shown in the
system tray after JAWS was shut down and restarted? Shouldn't JAWS be
removed if it's shut down. This happens with both insert-f4 and
insert-windows-f4. Sometimes my save as menu won't work in Word. If I shut
JAWS down and bring it back, the menu reads as it should.
I much prefer running JAWS from the system tray, so that it won't be in the
alt-tab line up.
Sorry I don't have an answer for you, and maybe a lot of us, about
disappeared messages. Smile.
Rebecca

Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe To Remove Hardware Message

2018-05-26 Thread Mike B.
Hi Adrian,

Like you I want the extra confirmation, but although Jaws doesn't report the
message consistently any more the removal process is being completed. When
the removal process is completed the Safely Remove icon disappears from the
system tray unless you have more than 1 external drive running which I'm
prone to do. But, let's say you have 3 external drives running and their
drive letters are L, M, & N. You want to remove drive M, you open the
Safely Remove from the system tray, choose driveM, and press enter. Now,
Jaws doesn't report the drive is safe to remove, but if you look in,
Computer, driveM won't be showing which means it's safe to remove.

If you're only running 1 external drive, after you choose it from the Safely
Remove icon, and Jaws doesn't report it to be safe to remove, look in,
Computer, and if you don't see it in the drive list it's safe to remove.

Mike, just a thought. Before going to the system tray, do you close the
window displaying that drive's contents? Then does the confirmation show up
in the system tray?

A related point: My tech consultant says that removing an item, such as an
SD card, can be done safely so long as the window is closed. He'd say, then,
that even if you aren't getting that reassuring confirmation, you'll be
okay. Even so, I admit I take the extra precaution of getting system tray
confirmation.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the info. I did go to the area you were talking about and Jaws
2018 was checked. I seem to have got both my computers to startup on Jaws
2018 but I could not get Jaws 2018 to load with using the hotkey. Never had
this issue in my life. Always just went into the icon under properties and
put it the hotkey after installing the latest Jaws update. Well the guy from
FS told me to delete the hotkey then press enter. Then go back into
properties and go to hotkeys and press ctrl + alt + J then press enter. I
always just press J and it put everything in the hotkey field the ctrl + alt
+ J. So doing it his way worked on both my computers. So I don't know why it
did not work the way I use to do it for many years. I guess he taught an old
dog a new trick.

See if doing the steps below will get J2018 to start with the computer as
the default version of Jaws.
1. Open the control panel and navigate to the Ease of Access center and
press enter. If you press, Windows key + R, to open the Run dialogue and

2. In the Ease of Access Center, tab to, Use the computer without a display

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws saying misspelled in browsers

2018-05-22 Thread Mike B.
Hi Adrian & Josh,

To navigate Chrome Settings a little more quickly you can navigate by
heading after opening Settings.
1. Open Chrome, well duh LOL , press, Alt + F, for the file menu, and press,
S, to open Settings.
2. Now navigate by heading using the letter, H, and the headings you will
hear are, People, Appearance, Search Engine, Default Browser, & On Start-up.
For each heading down arrow line by line for the options of each heading.
Ignore the lines that say, Clickable, because when you down arrow one more
time you'll hear Jaws report the button that activates or deactivates the
options. If you hear, Button Pressed, that means the option is turned on,
and if Jaws only reports, Button, it's turned off.
3. If you press the letter, H, 1 more time after the, On Start-up, heading
you will hear Jaws announce, Advanced heading level2 button collapsed.
Press enter to expand the Advanced options and navigate the same way here as
explained above, by heading and up / down arrowing. Here are the headings
listed in order:

Josh,

I think I was mistaken about the quick settings menu item. There, spelling
options only enable you to select how spelling is reported, not whether to
report it at all.

Instead, the answer is in the Chrome menu. I don't really understand how it
works, but I can get you to the option:

Alt-f for file menu, then s for settings
Tab like a madman until you land on "Advanced."
Resume tabbing like a madman until you arrive at spelling options.

Yes I know about how to navigate quick settings. I haven’t used jaws in
about 10 years though, that was back when the state agency bought it for me.
But thanks to a nice combination of things, I am now able to buy it myself
without the help of a state agency. Which is very nice!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Recent Mode & Gmail, Step #3

2018-05-17 Thread Mike B.
Good Morning Again Dave,

The steps on the server do not tell someone how to set Gmail to receive a
copy of their own messages. The steps say how to set up Gmail for POP3, but
not how to get a copy of their own messages. As I said earlier, there are 2
schools of thought for someone to get a copy of their own messages sent to a
list. The first was to put, recent plus a colon in front of your email
address on the General tab in account properties, and the second was to put,
recent plus a colon, in front of your Account Name / email address on the
Server tab of account properties. People have had success using both ways,
but I guess the important thing to remember is that if one way does not
work, try the other! LOL

Hi David,

Yes they have, but I've read that putting, recent:, in front of your email

[JAWS-Users] Getting My Messages With Gmail, How I Did It

2018-05-17 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

Okay folks, in order for me to be able to receive my posts' sent to the
Jaws-Users list I had to do the following using Gmail with Outlook Express:

Open up the tools menu, then arrow down to accounts and press enter.

Once in the dialog box, highlight your Gmail account, and tab to the
properties button, and press the spacebar.

In the resulting dialog box, control+tab to the servers page, and tab down
to the, Account Name, edit field.

In the Account Name field, type the word recent with a colon before your
e-mail address.

So, if you're typing this information into your e-mail field, you would type
in:

recent:usern...@gmail.com

Tab down to the apply button, then shift+tab back to the ok button and press
the spacebar.

You'll land back on the accounts dialog box, at which point, you tab to the
close button, then press the spacebar again.

The next time you send and receive your messages, you'll receive each and
every message you ever sent via Gmail, so be prepared to get a flood of
e-mails once you do this.
Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Desktop Shortcuts That Will Open With A Specific Browser, How To

2018-05-16 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

The following was told to me by Rick Justice, and I just do a sorry job of
typing it up! This is done with Jaws 16 thru J2018 latest and Windows 7.

Note: If you have the file path of the browser already pasted into a text
file, and also the website's URL you're creating the shortcut for also
pasted into the same text file it makes doing the following much easier.
Otherwise you'll have to browse for the browser file path. The example I'm
going to use is with Chrome and the Jaws-Users website.

1. Go to the desktop and make sure that nothing is selected. Either press
F5 when on the desktop or hold down the control key and press the spacebar
to deselect anything that is already selected.

2. Press the, applications / context menu key, / right mouse click, to bring
up the context menu items.

3. Choose new from the menu and then choose create shortcut from the sub
menu.

4. A 2 stage dialogue opens. The default field says type a location. Paste
the Chrome file path right here.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"

Take notice of the quotation marks at the beginning and end of the file
path. At the end of the file path put a space with the spacebar to the
right of the ending quotation mark. Now put the website URL you want this
shortcut to open, but you, do not, need to put the, http:// orr www., you
only need to put everything after the, http:// or www., text. See example
below.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" jaws-users.com

5. Tab to the, Next, button and press the spacebar to open. This is where
you put in a name for this shortcut. After typing the desired name tab to,
Finish, & press enter.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Desktop Shortcuts With Firefox

2018-05-16 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

Okay, a long way of doing it, but here are steps for creating desktop URL
shortcuts. Note: If the shortcuts are made with Firefox, the shortcut will
only work if Firefox is your default browser. I'll post steps for shortcuts
that can be assigned to open with a particular browser at a later time.
There may be an easier way, but here is what I do to create a desktop icon
for a web page.

1. Open your browser to the desired website.

2. Press, Alt + D, to move to and highlight the address bar , or pressing,
F6, works as well.

3. Press, Control + C, to copy the URL to the clipboard.

4. Move to the desktop and make sure that nothing is selected. Either press
F5 when on the desktop or hold down the control key and press the spacebar
to deselect anything that is already selected.

5. Press the, applications / context menu key, / right mouse click, to bring
up the context menu items.

6. Choose new from the menu and then choose create shortcut from the sub
menu.

7. A 2 stage dialogue opens. The default field is address. Paste the
address from the desired web page into the address field and tab once to the
next button and press space bar.

8. A second page opens and the default field says 'type a name for the
shortcut.' Type in a recognizable name for the shortcut and tab to next and
press space bar.

9. A finish button should appear. Press space bar or enter on it and you
are done.

This is a bit convoluted, but it seems to work quite well.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Mike,
It appears that the only way to accomplish this is with drag and drop,
at least in this version of Firefox.
I found nothing in the program or a web search to show any provision for
saving a website shortcut to the Desktop.
You will have to use the method I described to you earlier.

Hi Adrian,

I'm sorry, but I failed to mention that I run the portable version of
Firefox ESR 52.8, and this doesn't appear in Start menu/ All Programs.
There's a way of creating a desktop shortcut with the version I'm running,
but it requires creating a new shortcut through the context menu with
nothing selected on the desktop. I'm definitely going to save these steps
in case I have to install Firefox to get the desired workability

Hi, Mike.

I also have Windows 7. This should work.

Press the Windows key and arrow up once to "all Programs."
Press enter, then when a list appears press the up arrow key once.
Then press f until Firefox appears.
On hearing Firefox verbalized, press the applications key.
Arrow up to "send to submenu," press enter again.
Then press the down arrow key until you hear "Desktop" and press enter yet
again.

I wonder if there's a semantics issue here. To uninstall is to completely
remove the program from the computer. to unload is to temporarily disable a
program until you're ready to bring it back. So yes, you do need to unload
JAWS 18 before loading JAWS 17.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Multiple JAWS versions

2018-05-14 Thread Mike B.
Hi Jerry,

No, you don't need to uninstall anything. Being that you said you have Jaws
17 showing in Programs of the control panel, David is trying to see if Jaws
17 is only showing or if it's installed.

If you open the start menu and open your Programs folder, arrow down to see
if Jaws 17 is there. If it's there, Jaws 17 is probably already installed.
To finde out for sure, this is what David is suggesting, open the Run
dialogue with the keystroke Windows key + R, and type in the following:

jaws 17

Now unload whatever version of Jaws you have running with the, Jaws key +
F4, keystroke and press enter. to shut that version down. Now press enter
again, and if you have Jaws 17 installed it should start.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS repair error message

2018-05-12 Thread Mike B.
Hi Sadam Ahmed,

I haven't been following this thread, but have you tried uninstalling this
version of Jaws & reinstalling from scratch? If you have tried this, and
were unsuccessful, have you tried a another downloaded installer?

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Adrian,

I have tried running the repair quite a number of times with the same
result.

Even tech support can't work it out.

Very strange.

Re: [JAWS-Users] re firefox 52.8 ESR 64 bit dropbox link

2018-05-12 Thread Mike B.
Hi Gary,

Here's a little tip on posting Dropbox download links for downloading.
Notice at the end of your Dropbox download uRL it says, =0? Well when
people click on a DB download link with, =0, at the end they have to
download the file from the Dropbox website. But, if you change the, 0, at
the end to a, 1, then people can then download as normal by right arrowing
to choose,Save, and pressing enter. Here's the link with the, 1, at the
end.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange Word Problem With Jaws

2018-05-12 Thread Mike B.
Hi Adrian & Mauricio,

Here's Marie's reply to both of your helpful tips.
From: Marie
Thanks so much! I was already in print view but the alt+w+1 did the trick. I
knew it had to be some kind of setting since it was only on the desktop.
I certainly appreciate having this fixed because it was very annoying.
Thanks again for all your help.

Hi,

I would try going to the View ribbon and choosing 1 page to be displayed.
The key sequence is Alt+W, followed by number row 1.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Strange Word Problem With Jaws

Hi All,

Asking for a friend:
From: Marie
I have a rather strange problem with Word 2016 but I had the same problem
with 2010. I'm running Win 10 1803 with J2018 latest, but get the same
result using NVDA as well. When I am in a document and am arrowing down it
will skip pages. It will go from page one to page three, then page five,
etc. It does not do this when doing a say all or if I am arrowing right or
reading word by word with the insert + right arrow. This only happens on my
desktop and not the laptop so I am pretty sure it is some odd setting that I
have accidently made. But I have gone over and over the options and can not
figure out what setting is causing this.
Before installing 2016, I uninstalled 2010 thinking the problem would not
persist but I was wrong. Does anyone have an idea what setting is causing
this & how I can fix it? Thank you all very much.
Marie
