I am a brand new user of Kicad impressed from the very short time that has been
necessary to start working.

I am going to use in a project two ICs produced by Texas Instruments, that
gently has on its website the possibility to download their footprints in three
formats:

** Cadence Allegro v13.6+

** Mentor Boardstation v8.7+

** Mentor PADS-PowerPCB v3.5+

Could anybody suggest me a tool capable to convert one of this formats in the
one used by Kicad ?

Thank you very much,

Valerio.

pcb-fpw is open source, so it would be possible to modify add it to the kicad
 suite .. seems to be

 written in java-bloat..

No, it's buggy plain C with GTK :P

It actually contains a lot of hardwired size, too:P

The separate names for a cap and resistor 0805 package is silly

Actually it isn't... a ceramic cap has round plating, a chip resistor is an
attached foil... I presume the mechanical properties are different (indeed the
pads are different, too)

The M,N,and L are for most, Nominal and least -- describes most compromises
 folks would run into..

You forgot Proportional for THT, too... and the Nominal one is good for 90% of
the production projects, IMHO...

One thing to point out is these case sizes originate in metric - the imperial
 notation is approximate.

*Most* case size originate in metric:D

R: [kicad-users] Fwd: more than one library importing at a time

2009-08-10 Thread Carlo Garberi
You can use this empiric rule (used in industry, generally, but also
suggested into many books):

- Voltage Insulation: 10 volt x mil [ex: 200 volt = 20 mils]

- Current, track dimension: the same for a air-wire, about 3A/mm or 3A/100mils
for long tracks [1 inch] up to 6A/mm or 6A/100mils for a short track; this
for a FR4 (or similar) 35 micron Cu (standard, normally used, board). This
condition only for a continuous flux current (ac or dc), the worse case.
More current for a more thickness of Cu or for a better duty-cycle.

Excuse me for my English.

Dear SIR,

Any one can let me know the pcb track size according to the
voltage and current rating increases. For example if it is a 5v dc supply is
passing through a track then what will be the track size and same also for
current.

Re: [kicad-users] pcbnew: Problem with grid and module center while moving

2009-08-02 Thread Carlo Garberi

certe cose.

Most components are already set out to a 50 grid, when you
change

the grid, the m will move the reference point to the nearest grid

point. so leave your grid at 50 and this will not happen. However if

you find this a real problem make a copy of the module and casll it

something else, select the entire module, and move it so that one of the

pads is centered on the blue cross. The system should then place that pad

on a grid point.

2009-08-01 Thread Carlo Garberi
alcuna.

[kicad-users] A bug (?) and a request.

2009-07-16 Thread Carlo Garberi

frequente?

Grazie, saluti

[kicad-users] Zone problem

2009-02-27 Thread Carlo Garberi

Ho fatto 2 pcb con Kicad, in modo regolare, in tempi diversi, con Kicad v.

circuito (insulation or clearance).

Qualcuno puo' aiutarmi?

Grazie.

[kicad-users] Problemi sulla / Issues for 20090107-unstable r1532

2009-02-01 Thread Carlo Garberi
Note that this message is written in 2 languages: ITALIAN and ENGLISH.
Messaggio in ITALIANO e INGLESE.

--- ITALIAN TEXT ---

Kicad ver. 20090107-unstable r1532:

I rilievi a seguire sono stati fatti su 2 macchine:
[A]: pentium-3 933MHz, con Win2000-Pro
[B]: celeron 466MHz, con Win XP
Il confronto e' eseguito fra Kicad ver. r1532 e Kicad ver.

- PcbNew: NON compaiono i difetti rilevati in EEschema.

Grazie.

Saluti,
 Carlo, I2GOQ e Alessandro, IW2NHL

--- ENGLISH TEXT ---

Kicad ver. 20090107-unstable r1532:

Hardware used for the following test:
[A]: pentium-3 933MHz, with Win2000-Pro
[B]: celeron 466MHz, with Win XP
The comparison was done among Kicad ver. r1532 and Kicad ver. 25c, using the
same schemas, the same .pro file, the same libraries loaded.

- EEschema: clicking on empty space in the schema, about 50% of CPU is used for
some seconds.
The same operation, with r25c lasts a fraction of second both on [A] and [B].

- EEschema: double-clicking on a device in the schema to view or change the
properties:
on [A] you wait for about 5...6 secs
on [B] you wait for about 20...25 secs before the command is executed.
During the wait (measured with a watch), both on [A] and on [B] you can move
the mouse pointer (arrow), but the work pointer (cross) remains frozen on the
click point.

- PcbNew: described bugs for EEschema are NOT present.

- EEschema-Libedit and PcbNew-ModuleEditor: copying an element (line or other)
or a block of the device being edited freezes the PC, after that the part has
been copied, dragged and dropped on the page. Task-Manager shows an abnormal
use of the system memory with swap on HD; the only way to quit is killing the
process. This happens both on [A] and [B]. This has been tested with several
schemas, also removing one by one all loaded libraries up to having only one
loaded, independently on which library it was.

Can you reproduce this behaviour?

Thanks.

[kicad-users] 2 questions

2008-11-05 Thread Carlo Garberi

Two questions:

1- In EEschema, the Power_pins On/Off have to be forced at any schema begin:
but when I have to re-design a schema, the command Power_pins On/Off is always
Off. May be I use the power pins in schema to connect a filter or other. When I
re-read an old schema, the Power pins are off; the schema is incomplete. Why? I
think the command has to be tied to schema, not other.
Once more: in Libedit, there's not a control to visualize the power pins.
You have to return to Eeschema, set On , return in libedit.C'e' pas bon!
2- an optimum in Eeschema: I can read the datasheets from the schema.
But...: why this setting sometimes reset itself ? I need to set yet the device
in libedit, to renew the utility.
And: where the program write this setting?
 not in the device (library)
 not into the cache library
 not in the schema
 not
Where is it?
Why this precious utility reset itself?

ok, this one is the 3th:
very good the grid at 0.1 mil. In Libedit, however, the zoom is too big: I have
some problem to design particular devices.
For a new edition?

Viva Kicad !!!

and excuse me for my temptative english!

R: [kicad-users] textPCB Properties

2008-06-01 Thread Carlo Garberi
The same by eeschema: the last lt;lt;good versiongt;gt; is from
25-Jan-2008.
nbsp;Next version: r984, r995, r1040, r1068, r1100, tested, have the same
problem. When I set a dimension for a text, a number, un instance, a ref, etc,
the dimension go to 0.000.
First time I think this a problem only by Win 2000-pro, but also in Xp it is
present; it depends, may be, from a setting or from a Win Xp upgrade. The
problem was not present, on my computer at office, until I had an automatic
upgrade from IT, the 20th-My-2008.
It is a BIG problem: please HELP, if someone can it!
thank to you!

I am not able to change the text size using the textPCB properties.

SizeX and SizeY always revert to the default value of 0.0050 no matter

what values I input. I am using the Add text button to create the

text. And if I try to change a text label already created its size will

revert to the default value as soon as I close the textPCB properties

as soonnas I close the dialog.

Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?

[kicad-users] Two projects merged after recovering from an error.

2008-03-21 Thread Carlo Garberi
Two projects merged after recovering from an error.

I was working on Project1/Board1 when, deleting a net, Kicad gived me an error
and sked me if I wanted to loose the file or not.
I answered no and it tried to recover the file.
It end up with Project2/Board2 loaded (a project I used days ago) and the
circuits on Board1 and Board2 merged inside Board2.

At this point I closed everything without saving to avoid messing up Board2.

Now loading Board2 shows no problem and loading Board1 shows the content up to
the last save I did before the error occurred.

Anyone else ever found a similar bug?
Should I post a new bug to the developers?

Thanks, best regards.
   Carlo

2007-12-28 Thread Carlo Garberi
Hi.
Please excuse me, but:

you write... Check Files section. You can find there few utilities, also for
 conversion ...
where is the FILES Section ? what is the file section? I'm using the Win's
version of Kicad.

Is it the same program as kicad, or not? some time I think you're telling of
other program !

thank's

 Hello,
I saw indeed in files section that there are some protel (pcad) to
kicad converters... Altium designer can export to theses formats, but I
must use Altium designer all the same to do this !
I prefer directly import altium designer format in Kicad, rather than
to do altium designer format- protel format - kicad format !
