RE: [kicad-users] module editor bug ? Edit pad - bug found !
Answer to myself . Found the bug, and bug it is ! In order to edit pads in the module editor on a selected components, the concerned layers in PCBnew must be active. in PCBnew, I had unticked the copper layer because I was working on the component layer and then I couldnt edit standard pads with copper on both side, but only smd pads on component layer ! and then the resulting irregularly octagonal peg has been rammed into a Windows round hole (the authors of the last such package I used were so proud of this feature they made it part of their marketing). After a day of using such a package I'm generally absolutely furious, which does nothing for the quality of my work. I'm producing boards far more professionally with kicad than I ever did with a commercial product, and that is almost entirely down to the kicad UI. It isn't perfect, but at least it largely follows current practice. Footprints I can fix easily; fixing the UI is rather more difficult. Since you're clearly upset by the existing library, have you considered donating your own library to the kicad project? Regards, Robert. Stephrac74 wrote: Ive got these libs thanks. Youre right Cristian The writing arrangement on silkscreen is mandatory when finalizing the PCB. But the component outlines on silkscreen which covers pads cant be arranged from PCBnew. Robert, I would be interested in your pics. You can drop it directly by mail : stephra...@wanadoo.fr For DXF import Ive read your post on the topic, explaining your method. It seems it works for you but you have to recognize that the method is painful. Ive just imported DXF and 3D STEP models in Altium in few clicks. Thats definitely a nice feature. Youre right saying you need to have the money for getting and maintaining a software. Its acceptable as long as the software makes you saving at least the equivalent money ! Im becoming a self employed man and I would not hesitate to let my company paying 1k$ if I was sure to gain time with the software. I will spend 1-2 days for Altium evaluation and decide with which one I will continue the project. Coming back on Kicad, I guess I would keep it for a professional use if it could have at least the DXF import and a better lib management tool. The silkscreen consistency issue is painful at beginning but project after project it becomes easier as your own lib starts to be wide enough to cover your usual applications. I will definitely keep it for my amateur use. For N1IST, I had also experienced the silkscreen issue with a PCB manufacturer who didnt spent time to correct it. So I would say that sometime it works, .. sometime not ! The net result is that the total time I've spent on this is perhaps minutes. I don't bother editing a footprint just because the text isn't as I like it unless I know I'm going to be placing a lot of that particular footprint, the reason being that I usually end up moving and editing component texts on the board itself anyway in order to squeeze them into the (usually very limited) available space. If you like I can send you a photo of one of my kicad boards and you can decide for yourself if it looks professional enough. I've just completed a design for a customer using their mechanical drawing originally created in AutoCAD, and posted a description (in English) of how to do it on this list. [kicad-users] libs silkscreens unusable
Hi group, Ive noticed that most of the library components have unusable silkscreens. Most of the time, the lib silkscreen shows the component itself with pads and so on instead of a simple square or so, and the silkscreen often covers the pads which is amazing ! This is not usable for PCB industrialization. Ive decided to dont use anymore the Kicad libs and to redesign all my needed components ! This is a major issue according to me and a major waste of time I have no time anymore to change the software. Regarding the different limitations Im facing for a professional use, Im starting having regrets to have chosen Kicad L This is a fantastic software, and free, but the 2% of missing details makes this software not usable for professional use according to me and requires a lot more time even for an amateur use than an other software. RE: [kicad-users] Bill of Material : how to group all values in 1 line ?
Good answer Andy, That’s a way, not so useful, but which works at least. In order to not mix references with same value but different type (power or voltage as you said) the best is to specify it in the value field. Usually, I write somewhere that all the values are for instance 1%-100ppm-0.125W except specific mention, Then I just add for a particular resistance or capacitor the specific information (47 – 1W or 100u – 100V) Again, a missing feature which makes the difference with a professional product. I hope it will be improved… Best Stephane De : kicad-users@yahoogroups.com [mailto:kicad-us...@yahoogroups.com] De la part de Andy Eskelson Envoyé : lundi 18 janvier 2010 19:31 À : kicad-users@yahoogroups.com Objet : Re: [kicad-users] Bill of Material : how to group all values in 1 line ? You will find that the format you suggest will not import very easily into excel, it gets very messy. The problem is that you don't know how many of the components such as C1, C2 and so on there will be on any line. So the totals would not appear in the same col. (That might not matter to you) If you only want a total of each value such as 100nF 6 off then you can get that directly via excel from the standard lst file. Use excels pivot table function. First import the lst file into a worksheet, you should end up with two cols, ref and value Click on the first cell start the pivot table wizard, it should pick up the limits of the imported data click finish (let the wizard do the work) On the pivot table worksheet (will automatically pop up) drop ref into col fields drop val into row fields drop ref into data fields That will produce a grid with the totals at the end if you don't want to see the data and just get the totals drop rep into the page fields as well, and 6that will hide the data You can do quite a lot with the formatting and such like so it's worth having a play and working through the tutorials on pivot tables . There is of course a problem... You really need to include the footprint data as well, because the default output does not tell you what type of cap or resistor it is. You might have 47 ohm 1/8 watt Resistors, and a couple of 47 ohm 10 watt jobs in the project, likewise for caps, you may have 10V working, 50V and so on. For purchasing you need to know this. You may find that it's better to process the stuff file generated by Cvpcb to extract the additional data. You could also process the cmp file created by pcbnew. In either case it's prob a task better suited to access or a bit of programming than excel. Some components (most?) in library have their power pins invisible and attached to a net (VCC or VDD for instance) Is there an other solution than making the modification on each component to put the power pins visible in order to wire some components on my switched +5V and some other on my permanent +5V ? Thanks Patrick, If Iwe well understood, your method is : 1. On the existing project add a subsheet and copy the blocs you want to this new sheet 2. Exit the existing project and copy the subsheet file to the new project directory 3. Open this sheet and then copy the blocs to your new project Is that right ? I just create the new subsheet at the top, which will create a blank schematic page, exit kicad, and then copy the preexisting stuff over the new sheet. It's really quite simple; Kicad doesn't have any hidden files -- with the .sch files, what you see is what you get. [kicad-users] To Jean-Pierre Charras : Microwaves tools suggestion
Hi the list, Hi Jean-Pierre, Im trying to use Kicad for my microwaves designs. This is good you have already implemented some usefull tools for this application. However Ive some improvement suggestions Im sure that all the people designing microwaves PCB would enjoy. 1. Microstrip tool : drawing microstrip is really needed now : tracks with square endings (could be made with pads for the endings), 90° angles with external angle cut : Just set the track width (which depends on the impedance expected and PCB Er) 2. The ability to draw shapes like rectangles on the copper layers and to assign them to a net in order to design PCB inductances and capacitors As there is already a stub tool which are usually implemented on microstrips, WE NEED the microstrips tool ;-) Hoping to see a such function soon as I still dont know at the moment how to do an angle on my microstrip ! Congratulations for Kicad. This is a great software. Regards Stephane (France)

Hi Stefane, All PCB packages, including KiCAD would normally generate tracks with rounded ends, because that's how Gerber files are usually generated. If you _really_ need a square end - or as near a square end as possible, you should have two options: 1. Make your critical transmission line with a copper zone fill, and specify very narrow primitive tracks, or 2. Add a flash aperture to your Gerber apertures table that corresponds exactly to your wanted track end, or the entire transmission line feature, provided it is rectangular. If you normally generate embedded aperture Gerber files, i.e. RS274X, which is recommended, 2. will normally not be an option in most PCB packages. Alternatively, many post-layout CAM editing packages have the ability to add this feature. Check out CAM350, for example (I am only familiar with this one - there are many others). If you are not using Gerber output, but postscript instead, the track ends will probably be square anyway. A few things to try... No change : 1. I’ve still some warnings (green arrow) that arenot always on the same pin (sometimes when I redo, it moves toanother one) 2. The PWR_FLAG generate an ERC error on the +5V and the IC power pins are still unconnected. Any idea ? Please download the latest build and try it again. It is getting very close to being released and it is very stable.
