I’m usually a very consciencious guy and very formatted with processes for
RD. This comes from big companies where I worked.

However, now I’m working alone and that’s not easy to find a second eyes

However with time we can achieve the “good at first time”

As I was in a hurry for this project, I’ve made some short circuits in the

I would be please to see your process too Robert.

Answer to myself…. Found the bug, and bug it is !

In order to edit pads in the module editor on a selected components, the
concerned layers in PCBnew must be active.

in PCBnew, I had unticked the copper layer because I was working on the
component layer and then I couldn’t edit standard pads with copper on both
side, but only smd pads on component layer !

Ticking again all the layers solved the issue.

Wow…

One more making me upset !

I’ve modified a LCD module in order to put the same pin number on fixing
points as the GND pin. Thus, the fixing points are connected to GND.

But then impossible to refill the zones on my PCB : Fatal error causing
PCBnew to close each time I try to refill after having changed the module by
the modified one…. (Memory could not be read at address xxx)

That sucks !

Does someone faced this situation ?

Hi group,

I’m adding GND copper zones on both sides of my PCB and I want to add a lot
of via to make connection between sides. This is a RF PCB.

I can add via in the GND zone, no problem.

But If I delete the zone to make some modifications and then refill the
zones, then all the via added are now considered as unconnected instead of
connected to GND

Do you know how to add a lot of via connected to GND that allows to delete
and refill the zone ?

 and then
the resulting irregularly octagonal peg has been rammed into a Windows
round hole (the authors of the last such package I used were so proud of
this feature they made it part of their marketing). After a day of
using such a package I'm generally absolutely furious, which does
nothing for the quality of my work. I'm producing boards far more
professionally with kicad than I ever did with a commercial product, and
that is almost entirely down to the kicad UI. It isn't perfect, but at
least it largely follows current practice. Footprints I can fix
easily; fixing the UI is rather more difficult.

Since you're clearly upset by the existing library, have you considered
donating your own library to the kicad project?

 this one is correct :

So what I’m doing now is to pick up the component I need from these libs,
and then duplicate it into a own lib and modify it !

I’ve spent all the day doing that and I’ve not finished ! This is a
nightmare ;-)

You’re right Cristian

The writing arrangement on silkscreen is mandatory when finalizing the PCB.
But the component outlines on silkscreen which covers pads can’t be arranged
from PCBnew. You have to modify the component. Depending on the number of
different components you have, the process may be long as I’m experiencing.

For me, having a few silk screen arrangement iterations once all electric
routing is finished is mandatory. I take care on a per pad basis not to have
any writing on pads. And also avoid having writing over vias, which makes
the printing unreadable. And no matter how good the libraries are, you will
always have to manually take care that the writing does not get over vias,
or over he pads of adjacent components.

For DXF import I’ve read your post on the topic, explaining your method. It
seems it works for you but you have to recognize that the method is painful.
I’ve just imported DXF and 3D STEP models in Altium in few clicks. That’s
definitely a nice feature.

You’re right saying you need to have the money for getting and maintaining
a software. It’s acceptable as long as the software makes you saving at
least the equivalent money ! I’m becoming a self employed man and I would
not hesitate to let my company paying 1k$ if I was sure to gain time with
the software. I will spend 1-2 days for Altium evaluation and decide with
which one I will continue the project.

Coming back on Kicad, I guess I would keep it for a professional use if it
could have at least the DXF import and a better lib management tool. The
silkscreen consistency issue is painful at beginning but project after
project it becomes easier as your own lib starts to be wide enough to cover
your usual applications. I will definitely keep it for my amateur use.

For N1IST, I had also experienced the silkscreen issue with a PCB
manufacturer who didn’t spent time to correct it. So I would say that
sometime it works, .. sometime not !

Stephane,

I've not bothered to go through the entire library of footprints, I just
edit them on demand. The net result is that the total time I've spent
on this is perhaps minutes. I don't bother editing a footprint just
because the text isn't as I like it unless I know I'm going to be
placing a lot of that particular footprint, the reason being that I
usually end up moving and editing component texts on the board itself
anyway in order to squeeze them into the (usually very limited)
available space. If you like I can send you a photo of one of my kicad
boards and you can decide for yourself if it looks professional enough.

I've just completed a design for a customer using their mechanical
drawing originally created in AutoCAD, and posted a description (in
English) of how to do it on this list.

Altium does seem to have a good reputation, but of course you need to
have the money for it - and the inevitable upgrades. Like anything
else you pays your money and you takes your choice.

Regards,

Robert.

RE: [kicad-users] Bill of Material : how to group all values in 1 line ?

2010-01-18 Thread Stephrac74
Good answer Andy,

That’s a way, not so useful, but which works at least.

In order to not mix references with same value but different type (power or
voltage as you said) the best is to specify it in the value field.

Usually, I write somewhere that all the values are for instance
1%-100ppm-0.125W except specific mention, Then I just add for a particular
resistance or capacitor the specific information (47 – 1W or 100u – 100V)

Again, a missing feature which makes the difference with a professional
product.

I hope it will be improved…

You will find that the format you suggest will not import very easily
into excel, it gets very messy. The problem is that you don't know how
many of the components such as C1, C2 and so on there will be on any
line. So the totals would not appear in the same col. (That might not
matter to you)

If you only want a total of each value such as 100nF 6 off then you can
get that directly via excel from the standard lst file. Use excels pivot
table function.

First import the lst file into a worksheet, you should end up with two
cols, ref and value

Click on the first cell
start the pivot table wizard, it should pick up the limits of the
imported data

click finish (let the wizard do the work)
On the pivot table worksheet (will automatically pop up)
drop ref into col fields
drop val into row fields
drop ref into data fields

That will produce a grid with the totals at the end

if you don't want to see the data and just get the totals
drop rep into the page fields as well, and 6that will hide the data

You can do quite a lot with the formatting and such like so it's worth
having a play and working through the tutorials on pivot tables .

There is of course a problem... You really need to include the footprint
data as well, because the default output does not tell you what type of
cap or resistor it is. You might have 47 ohm 1/8 watt Resistors, and a
couple of 47 ohm 10 watt jobs in the project, likewise for caps, you may
have 10V working, 50V and so on. For purchasing you need to know this.

You may find that it's better to process the stuff file generated by
Cvpcb to extract the additional data. You could also process the cmp file
created by pcbnew.

In either case it's prob a task better suited to access or a bit of
programming than excel.

[kicad-users] Bill of Material : how to group all values in 1 line ?

2010-01-17 Thread Stephrac74
Hi all,

I’d like to generate the bill of material with the following format :

ValueReferencesQuantity

100nF C1,C2,C8,C10 4

47Kohms R1, R2, R3 3

Instead of having 1 line per reference like :

100nF C1

100nF C2

100 nf C8

That would be easier to import the BOM and use it directly in excel for
purchasing.

Is there any way to do ? I don’t find the correct configuration

[kicad-users] Tool for library management

2010-01-12 Thread Stephrac74
Hi there,

Do you know a tool in order to manage the libs easily under Windows ?

I’ve tested the Vermod, Mod2mod, Verlibr and Lib2lib which unfortunately are
in Portugese or so and do not accept the converted libs.

Until now in order to find a component or footprint, the only way I’ve
founded is to add manually the libs and to browse thru the lib editor or add
component tool…. That’s definitely not efficient !

Thanks

Stephane

RE: [kicad-users] Tool for library management

2010-01-12 Thread Stephrac74
Hi Andy,

Yes I’ve seen this method but regarding the number of components in lib, I
guess this method would not suit in my case… My aim is to pick up some
components I’m usually using from other libs and copy into my own lib. Thus I
would be able to organize my libs as I think they should be…

I’m really surprised that there isn’t any tool which ease the lib management
(display, copy, erase, …) That’s really a needed feature.

Have you found the pdf file of the standard module library, and seen the
suggested method of maintaining your own libs by creating a dummy board
layout (section 11.10 in the pcbnew help file)

I find that works better than trying to browse through things on screen
as it gives me a better idea as to sizes.

Dear Danilo,

I ask because I have in mind IC packages like QFN/DFN, and I feel that

I'm not trained for that, I don't have sophisticated soldering

I searched for it in their websites, but I didn't find anything,

Buses make the circuit diagram much more readable, and thus less prone to
mistakes.

Try reading a circuit with a dozen or more parallel tramlines and you
will soon discover how much easier they make things. :-)

4) Open new schematic _in_the_same_ eeschema instance where you saved block.

Thanks Patrick,

If I’we well understood, your method is :

1. On the existing project add a subsheet and copy the blocs you want
to this new sheet

2. Exit the existing project and copy the subsheet file to the new
project directory

3. Open this sheet and then copy the blocs to your new project

Is that right ?

Thanks

I just create the new subsheet at the top, which will create a blank
schematic page, exit kicad, and then copy the preexisting stuff over the new
sheet.

It's really quite simple; Kicad doesn't have any hidden files -- with the
.sch files, what you see is what you get.

Hi,
Parts with different package options generally have distinctly
different part numbers (usually the last few letters/numbers in the
part number). The data sheet normally lists these part numbers.
All you have to do is create a different module or symbols for each
part number.
It would be nice if Kicad supported part variants but it doesn't at
the moment.

[kicad-users] To Jean-Pierre Charras : Microwaves tools suggestion

2008-10-02 Thread Stephrac74
Hi the list,

Hi Jean-Pierre,

I’m trying to use Kicad for my microwaves designs. This is good you have
already implemented some usefull tools for this application.

However I’ve some improvement suggestions I’m sure that all the people
designing microwaves PCB would enjoy.

1. Microstrip tool : drawing microstrip is really needed now : tracks
with square endings (could be made with pads for the endings), 90° angles
with external angle cut : Just set the track width (which depends on the
impedance expected and PCB Er)

2. The ability to draw shapes like rectangles on the copper layers and
to assign them to a net in order to design PCB inductances and capacitors

As there is already a stub tool which are usually implemented on
microstrips, WE NEED the microstrips tool ;-)

Hoping to see a such function soon as I still don’t know at the moment how
to do an angle on my microstrip !

Congratulations for Kicad. This is a great software.

Great idea Remy. I’m going to try.

This may be an easy solution for track endings.

However I still need to find a solution for 90° angles. Until now I guess
the only solution is to « draw » the track with shapes and then to fill in
…

I’ll let you know

Hi,
Just an idea : you can place a 1pin component, and edit it as follow
: rectangular, Size X and Size Y according to your needs, select the
layer, netname, and set hole size to 0

Remy.

 Hi Stefane,

All PCB packages, including KiCAD would normally generate tracks with
rounded ends, because that's how Gerber files are usually generated.
If you _really_ need a square end - or as near a square end as
possible, you should have two options:

 1. Make your critical transmission line with a copper zone fill, and
specify very narrow primitive tracks, or

 2. Add a flash aperture to your Gerber apertures table that
corresponds exactly to your wanted track end, or the entire
transmission line feature, provided it is rectangular.

If you normally generate embedded aperture Gerber files, i.e. RS274X,
which is recommended, 2. will normally not be an option in most PCB
 packages.

Alternatively, many post-layout CAM editing packages have the ability
to add this feature. Check out CAM350, for example (I am only familiar
with this one - there are many others).

If you are not using Gerber output, but postscript instead, the track
ends will probably be square anyway.

 A few things to try...

I just thought of 3rd possibility: ask your PCB manufacturer to edit
the Gerbers for you (they will anyway, to suit their design rules!).
Trouble is then you lose control of the final output.

Hope this helps, rather than frustrates.
 Regards,
 Tony

Thanks Tony,

That helps for sure. I will investigate further the solutions you’ve raised

That’s definitely not easy to do in any case.

For simple circuit I believe drawing rectangles might be the solution. For
more complex design I ‘m just wondering how people doing that all the time
are doing…

Thanks

RE: [kicad-users] Re: How to save in JPG for instance ?

2008-08-10 Thread Stephrac74
I didn’t thought that it would be so complex.

I agree that JPG is a poor choice regarding PNG…

I believe that reading postscripts files and converti s the best way .

If anyone knows a soft for that….

I’m using Windows. There is a free tool called FastOneCapture which might
help but I’m really surprised that there is no other option ! I would
believe that including the schematic and PCB into a document is really
common but it seems not if I’m the first one to wonder how to do …

Might be a good improvement idea to submit…

However is someones has an idea before that….

Best

Sorry, but it seems that .ps files generated by the last version of
kicad are not readable by ghostscript. It was possible with older
versions of kicad!
Don't know if it's a bug.

Remy

Since PCBNew doesn't export in common graphic formats, you will have
to trace *.ps files (postscript files), and then change the file type
with a software that is able read .ps files and export to PNG (or gif
 or tif) format.
For example, xnview with ghostscript, but other image viewers probably
 can do that.

 Remy.

[kicad-users] ERC errors on schematic and power supply questions

2008-06-23 Thread Stephrac74
Hi group,

I’m new user of Kicad. I’ve to say that I’ve used plenty of CAD software and
this one looks really good… I’m playing with it since 2 months and there are
two points I can’t find the solution.

Two words about myself : I’m a french electronic engineer, I’m now leading
project in the industry but I’m also hamradio and I’m designing a lot for
this hobby.

Currently I’m designing a digital milliwattmeter.

I believe I will be often on this group for the following weeks….

Now, here are my questions

1. When I perform the ERC test on my schematic there are always some
pins marked as error whereas it seems correct. If I redo the wiring then the
error might disapear but appear somewhere else !

2. Some parts in lib have their VCC/GND pins invisible but they are
not automatically connected to my power supply even if I’ve labelled my +5V
as VCC and as VDD… What is the trick ? This is the same for parts I’ve
designed with power supply input set as ‘power supply input’

Many thanks for your support

Stephane

I’ve downloaded and installed this version.

No change :

1. I’ve still some warnings (green arrow) that arenot always on the same
pin (sometimes when I redo, it moves toanother one)

2. The PWR_FLAG generate an ERC error on the +5V and the IC power pins
are still unconnected.

Any idea ?

Please download the latest build and try it again.
It is getting very close to being released and it is very stable.
