The Info page for KR's seems to be down or is it just on my end? That is
too good of information to lose. Hopefully someone had it backed up. Thanks

Pete, you probably want at least a Sensenich 54x56 for a 3.0L, maybe a
54x58. We've been using a variant of the Sonex prop on the Corvair,
with more pitch. See enclosed photo for the model number of my
preferred 2.7L prop, the 54x54. I'd ask for a 54x58, personally. They
are expensive, but they are the best prop I've tried, and I've flown 15
or 20 different props on my KR2S. The best plan is to borrow one from
somebody for first flights, and then you'll know if it needs a little
more or less pitch, but my money's on the 54x58. I know you said 95 HP,
but that's at 3100 rpm, and you probably want a little more than that
for WOT straight and level flight. See enclosed photo for 54x54 model
number. William Wynne is a Sensenich dealer, and that may save $100 or
so.If I had one, I'd let you borrow it.

Pete asked-

>My engine is a 3.0 liter Corvair that dyno'd at 95 HP at 3100 RPM

>what other info do I need to supply to a prop manufacturer.

Give them the prop diameter and that will help the prop supplier zero in on the
pitch based on the individual prop builder's blade design and recommendations.
Prop diameter on KRs is fairly consistent given the required ground clearance
and the airframe geometry that sets the thrust line, but there are variations
between the original retract versions, the tri-gear, and the KRs with the
longer main landing gear legs.

When you actually order a prop they will of course need to know that the
Corvair turns the opposite of "normal" aircraft engines, and they'll also need
to know about the counterbore through the hub for the safety shaft, drive lugs
if your prop hub has them, and the bolt pattern.

2014-08-10 Thread G R Pickett
I have a Lyc 0-145, and you might be interested in the following, from my
manual:
Parts ARE available, from a guy in PA. There are other sources, but not
nearly as many as VW or even Corvair sources. Parts aren't cheap, but not
crazy expensive, either.
Rated at 75 HP, there are 3 models of 75 HP engines. Engine dry weights
vary from 155 to 167.5 lbs, depending upon what kind of magneto(s) are used.
Max RPM is 3100, economy cruise is 2700, and performance cruise is 2850.
Maybe it would use a prop similar to a VW, except it rotates clockwise.
I have seen manuals, in PDF form, on the internet, for around $25-50. Be
sure to get the Instructions, Parts Catalogue, and Service Bulletins.

The engine alone is worth way more than that. I don't know what a cowl tank
is but that can all be rebuilt. The ease of re configuring the gear depends
on the existing gear. If you want something that you can do "without much
trouble" get a new airplane.

KR> "KR-info" performance update

2010-03-14 Thread Mark Langford
It's probably not common knowledge that I've been doing the rare updates to the
Rand Robinson website at www.fly-kr.com for many years, updating it whenever
Jeannette has come out with her equally rare price increases. Mark Jones
pointed out to me the other day that the Gathering info on that website pointed
to the "upcoming 2007 Gathering", so it's been a while. Given the news that RR
no longer has a telephone number or a fax line, I've updated that website to
point to Steve's business, which is sanctioned and encouraged by Jeannette
Rand.

I'm on the fence whether that website should even continue on, but it would
seem useful as a pointer to KRnet, the Gathering website, and NVaero, so I plan
to add it to the list of KR websites that I maintain. I don't plan to do much
with it other than maintain it as a pointer though. One thing I changed on
that website that's always been an irritant to me is add a disclaimer under the
performance figures that all those numbers are not achievable by the same
airplane, and I added a pointer to the "real" peformance data on KRnet.

That reminded me that I'd also like to update the KR-info page on the KRnet
site that lists the performance of various KR/engine/prop combinations. It's
been a while since I've updated it, and by now there are more KRs in the air
and the builders have had time to gather some valid performance data. Feel
free to send that info to me in the order that's shown at
http://www.krnet.org/kr-info.html , or if you have Excel, open
http://www.krnet.org/kr-info.xls, edit it locally with your information, and
send it back to me for incorporation (that's easiest for me). I'll give y'all
a week or so to trickle the info in and then I'll update and post it.

Thanks,

Mark Langford

2009-05-18 Thread Teate, Stephen
Hello Ray,

You have gotten some excellent responses to your questions. I will add my
comments as I should complete my finish sanding on my top skins tonight.

Jeff Scott is exactly right about the mixing. I got my resin from AS and they
have a sheet on their web site that will give all kinds of mix ratios and batch
sizes. You will more than likely be mixing all kinds of batch sizes so this
really came in handy. I also used a 60 CC and 12 CC syringes for my resin and
MEK quantities. You can get them from any Vet or online. I also used an eye
dropper for the small batches.

Also what Phil said about the helpers is another excellent point. I actually
did the two bottom skins and ribs myself but it would have been easier with
another helper. But for the top skins I had both of my parents and my wife
helping me due to the amount of flox you have to put down. I had everything
laid out, prepped, and the skins premarked so everyone would know where to put
the flox. I had also done some pre batches so knew what temperatures and pot
life I could expect.

One big point here, be sure that when you do your dry test fit of your skins to
the spars that you tape down the leading and trailing edges and rub your hands
over the top surface cord wise to be sure you don't end up with a ridge line at
your spars. I thought I did this but when I pulled the clamps and tape off I
had a gorgeous set of wings that had a ridge you couldn't see but you could
feel. Obviously a span wise ridge is unacceptable so I got to fill and sand
some more!

With the left skin laid out and marked, everyone briefed on what to do and
especially that if they got an itch in the next hour, it doesn't get scratched
under any circumstances. I mixed up the first batch and gave it to my Mom to
put on the skin. Next batch was for Dad to put on the ribs. Next one was for my
wife to get on the spars and I mixed one to help anyone who needed it.
Everything was going great until I went to check on my Mom. She was almost
finished and I decided to add a little more flox to an area where she started.
It had already started to crust over! I quickly informed everyone to reverse
course and scrape it all off as fast as they could. We got it all off but of
course I had to reprep everything before we could try again. This is where the
ratio chart came in handy. I started mixing my batches so that I would have a
lot more time and didn't have any other problems.

I started saving small plastic water bottles to use to mix my resin in. I cut
the top off so that the bottom was about 4 inches tall. I kept my large batches
to 4 oz. I measured 4 oz. of water and poured it into a bottle and used a
sharpie to mark a fill line. I then marked the other bottles. When doing a
large layup like the top skin I would fill several bottles with resin to the
fill line and not add the catalyst until needed. I think I used ten to twelve
bottles for each skin but I would fill up a couple of extras just in case so I
wouldn't be trying to mix up some under pressure.

Sorry for the length, but I have been working on these for a couple of months
so it is pretty fresh in my mind. If you would like anymore info on my
experience you can e-mail me off net at ste...@compositecooling.com.

Hello All,
Am about to start work on my Dan Diehl wing skins.  Spars and ribs are done.
Ready to mount to the fuselage.  Have the video re: setting the dihedrahl and
think I can follow it.
Question #1. When I ordered everything it came with some flox to stiffenup the
mixture when I start using it.  When I check the video it looks like it has
been mixed to a consistency of peanut butter (not free flowing).  So what is
the formula?  MEK to resin is 2%.  How much flox?
Question # 2.  Can I use a little less hardener?  2% sets up fairly quickly.
If I dropped it to 1.5% would that buy me more application time but not weaken
the final product?

Any advice on anything even remotely connected will be appreciated.  Any tricks
or tips that could make the job easier/better?

Intention is to place the bottom skins only.  Then will set the aluminum fuel
tanks, run wires for lights, set up tie downs etc.
Top skins and final ribs will be in the future (hopefully near future).
Thanks for the response.

My aluminum tanks are sitting on two 1" x 1" pieces of aluminum angle that
is bolted between the front and rear spars. I placed some 1/8" rubber
stripping on the aluminum angle to prevent any possible rubbing or friction
between the tanks and the aluminum angle. Once the tanks were seated, I
poured two part liquid foam between the tanks and the spars and allowed that
area to completely fill. This holds the tanks firmly in place yet allows for
any flex in the wing. On the top and bottom of the tanks, I epoxied
polyurethane foam in place and then proceeded to shape the airfoil once all
the foam was placed in the wing. By doing this you have totally encased the
tank in the wing with foam. These tanks now have 250 flight hours with
absolutely no leaks or problems.

I picked up a project that came with new in box Diehl skins.

I am in almost in the same position as Ray and I am struggling with the
following questions.

When placing Al tanks (AKA Mark Jones & Dana Overall) how are the tanks
supported relative to the spars? Bonding small Al angle pieces seams
appropriate but is anyone also strapping them in some how???

 Next :

Wing ribs? What about (using the Dan Diehl skins) wing ribs over the area
of the tank? I desire to make a longer skinnier tank similar to what Dan
recommends in the his installation instructions (for the wet wing version)
but wonder about the skins ability to retain its shape while flying without
oil canning. I can make ribs and then hollow out the center and install
over the tank and bond but is this necessary?

I am thinking about making "stiff" wing ribs for each end of the tank to
"lock" it in place laterally within the wing. I have a KR experience CD and
in that CD Mark L. is demonstrating how he was fabricating his wing tank
"skins" he mentioned that due to the stiffness in that area he was NOT using
ribs and apparently Dan was in the audience as Mark asked about his wing
skins and Dan (off camera) indicated that with his skins he did use ribs. I
understand that ribs or something like them perform multiple functions in a
wet wing including baffling. BUT are they necessary for wing skin
structural support?

It is almost warm enough here in CT now to get resin to set up. Likely next
week it will be too hot and the stuff will go off while I am still mixing
it. Nice place, but building in a drafty unheated barn makes for a short
airframe construction season.

AS for the mix, I will not comment, as I'm not sure of you V/Ester resin you

Ray,

The catalyst mix (MEKP) is variable and should be varied depending on the
temperature and the amount of promoter in your resin. Since you buy the resin
already promoted, you don't know how much is in it, so you have to do some test
batches to find the set time. Do some tests with your Vinylester resin and the
MEKP to find the ideal working time for the resin at the temperatures you're
working in. Keep in mind that it is exothermic, so larger batches will set
much faster than small batches. Slowing down the cure time a bit isn't going
to hurt the strength of the Vinylester resin.

As for actual mix of resin to Flox, just keep adding flox until you get the
consistency of peanut butter. Again, do a couple of small test batches to see
how it works before doing the actual deed. It's simple and you'll learn
quickly.

Good luck,

I'm pretty sure I used an oil impregnated bronze bushing there, as in most
places I have a bellcrank of any kind. I think the spacing was 2.5", maybe
2.75, maybe 3", I forget, but it's the same in both places. I'll try to
remember to measure them next time I'm close to them. The front bellcrank
is a little tall so that new holes can be drilled in it to change the ratio
between it and the stick, but I haven't felt the need to do that.

It's at the same address as the html file, just replace the .html with a

I would think there would be a lot more credibility if the plane was already
flying, and all the blanks were filled in with real flight tested
information. There's still a possiblity of errors or outright mistruths,
but I'll bet most of these are about as accurate as the owners know how to
make them. Testing errors are a real possibiliy, especially if indicated
airspeed is relied on for the speed numbers, but it should be a helpful tool
with engine size and prop selection.

of a "fly-off". I'd like to know if my 170mph is really faster than
Mark L.'s 165mph and if Mark Jone's 1100fpm climb is really greater
than my 800-900 fpm climb. This would not be a "my KR is better
than yours" event but something to take a bit of the speculation
of system errors, etc. from the mix.

Should be both fun and entertaining.

Sounds like a plan. What ever happened to the spot landing contest? I
remember when Marty would drop a roll of toilet paper and see how many
times he could cut it. We could do a fastest climb to say 5000'. A
fastest high speed pass would be fun too.

Is there any chance that someone may know someone with a radar gun that can
clock the speed of a passing KR? Perhaps we could invite a local LE type to
partake in the fun. If my airspeed is not accurate, the speed that I tell
you is not comparable to any other KR with a different airspeed system.

My max speed is TAS confirmed within 1 knot (assuming I can read my ASI that
close) by a four direction average GPS ground speed. Measurements were
taken after a few minutes stabilization at a density altitude of about 4000

Vs is IAS.

Hello Net
In the past I have talked about developing a database for KR information. An
actual database was too much for my skill level and I gave up on it. Over the
past week or so I have been playing with a simple spreadsheet that contains KR
data and web links. I have entered a few examples into the sheet as an aid in
developing a finished product. The sheet is finished and is hosted at
http://www.kr-2.aviation-mechanics.com/krinfo.htm
In earlier discussions I was asked if the data sheet that I developed would
contain aircraft under construction. I have elected to not include them here.
The KR net has listings of builders and their web pages. I want this data
sheet to include information about aircraft that completed and flying. My hope
is that visitors to the site will be able glean from the info answers to some
common questions such as how fast, what type prop or gear, and others. You
might be able to estimate what engine size and prop combination will yield what
static and cruise RPM and much more. My plan is to cut and past information
that is sent to me. If you wish to have your plane listed, send me an off net
post. With over 1000 flying KR, this info could prove to be of great value to
both owners and builders alike.

like they come from KR netters. DO NOT OPEN them. Your
computer can get infected simply by opening the
e-mail, you don't have to open an attachement. Never
open anything from anyone you don't know.
Use a good virus protection and keep it up-dated.
Good luck,
Frank
