Soon after I started bobbin lace I saw, in Nyplattya Pitsia (double dots on
the 'a's) by Eeva-Liisa Kortelahti, a diagram of the lace pillow and the
sheet by which bobbins can be moved. The 10 or so pairs of a beginner
don't require much 'moving' so I just mentally filed it away as a curiosity.
Over the years I have noted that lacemakers are often people who are
involved in other crafts which makes sense to me. Some are involved in cake
decorating which is similar in the sense that you can make something very
pretty
using tools (lots of tools) and techniques that require skill.
I've just added a scan of my hackle pliers on the webpage of arachne lace:

The first batch (which Ilske described as torture devices!!) are the ones that

Sorry for the delay in replying - a friend here in Northfield died last week

So, I am just about catching up.

Hi Jay !
What you're describing (the picture, that is...) is probably one of the lovely
Christina pillows. The center of this pillow is stationary, and the apron
rotates around it. Because they are quite expensive, I have also thought of
ways to make my own. So I'm quite interested in how

Hi Alice
I notice when making leaves that that is when any of my threads will
misbehave, more than with other elements. I should think it *is* the
excess contorting put on the particular weaver bobbin - you could try
altering your technique, or simply switching bobbins from time to time. Or

Quite expensive is rather an understatement.the basic Christina pillow
would cost about $1,000 Australian (about $760 American dollars or 400
English pounds). The circular insertion for use instead of the roller
is extra.
