This piece of information stems I believe from Liz Bartlett's book 'Lace
Villages'. How reliable this information is I wouldn't like to say. Its
supposedly the villages of Potterspury and Paulerspury, Northamptonshire
around 1891. The said diary in the book mentions Mr Harrison - is this the

point ground by Catherine Channer, first published in 1928, which has very
details illustrations. Margaret Maidment also produced one 'Bobbin Lace
Work' in the 1930's I think. Also the Eunice Arnolds

by Kay Staniland and Santina Levey published, I believe, in 1983.
The book says that even then the lace flounce was too fragile to mount for

Can I add that it originally came from the book 'Lark Rise to Candleford' by
Flora Thompson and was set in the 1870's and 80's in the north-east corner
of Oxfordshire.
From the chapter called 'Survivals' - Queenie at her lace-making was a

though I could find no thistles the same general design layout is found in

About 26 years ago I stumbled upon lace at a meeting of the 'Young Wives'
where the speaker was a local teacher of lacemaking - she came, I saw and I
was conquered!! The next day the very helpful speaker loaned me pillow and

Possibly the length of the leash is also reflected in the way each of us

May I make one small point regarding the 'Channer' mat. As far as is known
Miss Channer designed but did not work it, the example shown in old
photographs was worked by Mrs Dixon of Clapham, Bedford, at one of the
classes of the Bedford Technical Institute c1926.

I'm not keen on the Brok threads so much prefer the Tanne 80 option.
I shall be using it for a floral Beds motif - adapted by Anita Wilkinson
from one of the old units prickings - so adding an extra pair here or there
shouldn't be a problem.
