Re: [lace] Arachne Anniversary-history
Hi, Devon and fellow listmembers I just tuned into this thread. I joined Arachne sometime during its first year. I remember when someone downloaded the membership list from 'the major', and found we had reached a membership of 400! Most impressive, at the time. For a number of years, a member made anniversary bobbins and shuttles. Eventually it became too much of a burden and someone arranged for a bobbin maker not on the list (different one each year) to do the job. As the century close approached, we discussed doing a millenium lace exhibit. It never got going. But Arachne '98 did. That was a face-to-face convention that Pat Hallam and Margaret (I'm blanking on her last name) were willing to put together. We met at the U of Nottingham, had classes (like IOLI convention), a few vendors (different ones each evening), a tour of lace activity in the city (a remember the machine-knitted lace factory very well), and nightly raffles. Another thing we did was try to raise funds for Luton museum to refurbish their famous Lace Dealer's Pattern Book. We held a raffle among ourselves. As I remember, they didn't need our contribution by the time we'd put it all together and I don't remember what the money went to. Maybe just a donation to the museum? Someone else may chime in on this. We discussed whether we should be called arachnids (I absolutely refuse to be thought of as a spider!!), or arachneans. There was also a thread back then about how many of us were in science or math, although I don't remember gaming or coding coming up much. Back then I was a constant contributor to the discussions. But life has gotten too hectic lately--I admit I often delete many of the Arachne messages and I rarely talk on the list any more, but thought I should put my 2 cents in on this one. I feel like an old fogey sitting in my rocking chair reminiscing about the "good old days" and chewing my gums. Robin P. Re: [lace] Happy Anniversary
Well, I have been with Arachne since the 1st year! Not sure which month because it was a painful year (fell off a ladder 25 feet to a cement floor in Dec 1995) I discovered bobbin lacemaking as an activity early in 1996 and was searching for a resource. Ran into Arachne, probably pretty close after its inception! So many people back then that are still loyal Arachne members! Yes, a glorious Anniversary! I am still loyal as all get out though not as active as then! Still reading posts and occasionally piping up! Thanks for the anniversary heads up David! [lace] My AOL message failed to get past Arachne's panix block this morning
As usual, I sent a lot of gmail users bcc's this morning in connection with the wonderful weaving story from The New York Times.  The main message, addressed to lace@arachne.com , failed to be delivered.  Sent the rejection notice to Avital.  Am sure she is as frustrated as I am. Only the people who are on my bcc list got the message, and only Nancy responded to me.  Therefore, I asked her (as a personal favor) to please forward my memo from her e-mail address to you all.  Somehow, not all of The Times address got picked up for you.  Others have since chimed in, and I am happy you have had the opportunity to see the gold silk shirt that is 1,000 years old and estimated to sell at Sotheby's London for $700,000.  It is delicious.  https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/04/12/style/thousand-year-old-shirt- sothebys.html  This is a test to see if tonight's memo from my AOL account gets through to Arachne subscribers almost 12 hours later.  Not being sent again to my private list who got bcc's this morning.  It is possible the server for Arachne was not in service this morning, due to a power outage or some other reason.  That has happened before.  Members have been discussing our long history today.  Liz has been very generous in providing a server to us.  Perhaps we should consider how we can update dinosaur-era computer programming ?  Do we have a volunteer programmer and someone with a server to share that we could transition to, and could our existing files be kept intact ?  Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. HI, I have no idea when I joined or how I joined, but I do know this that my early effort to study bobbins were a very collegiate approach with Arachne members. I have always remembered your willing help and contributions. There is no doubt as to the value I put on my membership of this enthusiastic group. Thank you all very much. [lace] Arachne Anniversary
I joined Arachne in late 1995 and made lots of friends throughout the world.  I even visited their homes in Canada, Denmark, New Zealand and the UK.  It is nice to put faces to names and is something we always do at our Arachne get togethers at the IOLI convention.  I believe the first one was in Maryland where I met Tamara.  We organized it in a local restaurant and I think we had 12 or 13 present. Restaurants are too small for us now and too hard to find in another part of the country. Now we have had more than 30 attendees some years and as we have a free raffle where people bring whatever they want to share,  we quite often have enough prizes for everyone to take a reminder home. I have not heard from any local Arachne for the San Antonio get together. Has anyone else got news for us about a meeting time and place? I love the information that we can share and have taken part in the Christmas Exchange for many years, trying to come up with a new pattern each year.  Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] How did Arachne start?
I remember when I first discovered Arachne, exploring "lace" through an internet searcher as Yahoo, it was back in 2000. I miss those years of my first steps in lacemaking and the excitement of contacting lacemakers of all over the world in a group that took the bobbin lace from a formal point of view. A group always willing to help and share their knowledge. Right now I come to mind lacemakers like Bev Walker, Miriam Gidron, Jeri Ames, Helen Ulrich, Lorelley Halley, Lorri Ferguson, Adele Shaak, Shirley Trigelles, Alice "in Oregon", Jean Leader, Pat Hallam, Tamara Duvall, Liz Reynolds, and so many others... I think remember that was Liz who launched, and has been keepìng on all these years the server "Majordomo", correct me if I'm wrong Thank you for letting us stay in touch all this time, and Avital for moderating us. It is true that other social media as Instagram, and especially Facebook, has caused us to disperse, especially for the advantage that represents to share visually laces and techniques by pictures and videos , however it is also true that many of us are still here. A very especial thought for all the Arachneans who are no longer here. Kind regards and a Happy Anniversary for all of us! [lace] point ground honeycomb? in Mechlin
I am looking at a piece in our collection. It says it is early 19th century Belgian lace, Mechlin. The background is Mechlin, but the Mechlin ground is widely spaced, like a 19th century Mechlin. One curious thing is that there is a ground that at first looks like honeycomb. But, in fact, it is more like two zig-zag chains (pin chains?) connected where they come close by a single cross, rather than by a downright pin chain. I can send photos. Has anyone seen this? Does it signify anything? Devon Sent from Mail for Windows 10 - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I got involved with Arachne in the mid 90's, pretty close to it's arrival on the internet and it has been a vital part of my life for all these decades. I'm a tatter and needlelacer and I can say I learned a lot about those lace types here. I have made friends throughout the world too. On one trip to Europe (wedding related) I asked about lace things in Berlin, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark. In both cities I was invited to a lacemaker's home and had the most enjoyable evening--both vying for being the most memorable part of my trip.  I can only hope that at some point, something I said was appreciated a little bit to start to pay back for the huge amount of information and friendship I have received from this list!!! I was at an Arachne gathering at the Salt Lake City IOLI Convention and I realized that many of the younger members were computer gamers and some of the older members seem to have been part of the Dungeons and Dragons crowd. I found myself wondering if the founding of Arachne had occurred because lacemaking appeals to women with mathematical, scientific and coding experience, and those women who were very computer knowledgeable started an internet list about lacemaking as a result. Re: [lace] Arachne Anniversary
I whole heartedly agree with everything Alice has said about Arachne, especially Liz and Avital. I have made many friends around the globe through this list as my husband makes aluminium bobbins though not on such a large scale as he did before. I was introduced to Arachne (after our son, who was in University at the time and knew all about the internet and hence managed to tell his two old folk what it was all about) by a friend who joined in the first year, 1995. Lorraine contacted me and said that there was a lady in Finland who wanted to know how to care for our aluminium bobbins. Well that was a shock to both my DH and myself as we had no idea our bobbins had travelled so far. Apparently the lady won them in a raffle. So, keep up the good work of the longest list on e-mail on the internet with regard to lacemaking in particular. I read most days but don't always comment. I particularly enjoy Jeri's research articles which are full of good sense especially in the archival parts. I wonder if Tamara is still a member? And it was nice to see David C mention Stormy Lee a while ago. May we last for a long time yet. [lace] Arachne Anniversary
I found Arachne just after it's first anniversary so I'm not quite a charter member but it was soon after I started making lace. The discussions gave me lots of good information and helped my lacemaking. Then the group decided they wanted a conference so Arachne 98 was born. Thanks to Pat and Margaret, we had 60 people from all over the world meet in Nottingham for a week of fun and classes, including attending one of England's large lace fairs. This sounded so interesting that I decided to attend. It was my first trip off my continent. A group of us met at the Victoria and Albert museum in London before the conference. I think there were a couple dozen or more. We attended a lace talk, and surprised the presenter. She was used to only 2 or 3 people at a time. I even met a lacemaker who lives 30 miles from me who has since become a good friend. The Arachne conversations have covered an enormous range of topics. The archives has much information for the person who wants to search a bit -- from picots to tallies to Russian fillings, etc. We have had up to 3000 members at times. I haven't seen a count for several years so I don't know how many we are right now. In the beginning, there was only one list. To separate the lace topics from the other things, the Lace-Chat list was started. All non-lace topics were to be directed there (recipes, grandkids, vacations). Each person can sign up for either or both lists. We had Secret Pals for six-month intervals. A non-identified gift was sent once a month with the sender's name revealed in the last gift. We also had the occasional ornament or bookmark exchange. Once we had a hanky (lace-edged, of course) exchange. That was in '98 because I exchanged mine in Nottingham instead of mailing it. We all generally got along very well, but about twice a year someone would say something that upset someone else, and there would be a short fuss. Liz, our list owner, does not have time to monitor all that is said, so we got Avital to be the Moderator, to step in when someone got testy. Most conversations are on topic and positive. I think we may be one of the longest continuously active lists on the internet. Arachne has stimulated my lace interests and given me friends all around the world. It has led me to Europe twice, with a third trip in the planning. Happy Anniversary to Arachne -- and may it continue a long time. Thank you, Liz Reynolds.
