Re: [Langcom] Nys wikipedia

2018-02-09 Thread Oliver Stegen
So this remains a contentious issue. IIRC, previous discussion tried to
come up with a plan for specialized wikis in heritage languages. Does a
community where the majority (or even *every* community member) no
longer speaks the original language have a right to preserve it in WMF
projects? I would like to see this happen, and nys:wp looks like a great
prototype and pilot to me. Hundreds of Aboriginal, First Nation and
Native American languages might follow suit. This also is part of the
"sum of human knowledge" even if (for sociolinguistic and/or privacy
reasons) it is not possible to compose continuous texts in those
languages any longer.

While I can't read/understand zh (and thus cannot say anything about the

be fine with approval.

Chinese Wikiversity is the largest test within Beta Wikiversity, with

seven independent Wikiversity projects. Additionally, the interface
translation is effectively complete in both zh-hans and zh-hant.

Where there is a question here is on community activity. The truth is
that LangCom should have approved this project around the end of 2014.
From late 2012 through the end of 2014, this test project met the
activity requirement just about every single month.  From then until
late in 2017, activity was consistent, but not quite as high, with
most months not quite seeing enough activity for approval.

Since late 2017, there has been a great deal of activity, most of
which comes from anonymous users. Now, I understand that we normally
don't count in "anonymous" when looking for regular activity. But
given the magnitude of the activity, the past periods of activity, the
fact that even without the anonymous contributions there is almost
enough activity to allow approval—and most of all, the confounding
factor of the Great Firewall—I'm actually inclined to consider
approving this.

Please share your thoughts.

 Hoi,
Including abridged has two issues.. It is English and it is not a
Wikipedia. So there must be another name for the project. The notion of
removing the abridged is not applicable. When there is sufficient traction
to have a Wikipedia in the specific language, it will be a Wikipedia and it

And more importantly, can this be made into a policy? Deletion of a wiki is

Re: [Langcom] deleted wiki -> deleted Wikidata sitelinks?

2018-02-09 Thread MarcoAurelio
Sounds sensible to me. If the wiki do not exist anymore, there is no point
in keeping links to nonexistent projects. But how would you remove them?
Doing so by hand would be tedious. Maintenance script or bot would be
better. Regards, M.

[Langcom] deleted wiki -> deleted Wikidata sitelinks?

2018-02-09 Thread Amir E. Aharoni
Hi,

So now the Moldovan Wikipedia (mo) is deleted (
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_closing_projects/Deletion_of_Moldovan_Wikipedia_2
).

But there are still a few sitelinks on Wikidata to this wiki, e.g.:
* https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5296
* https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q21197
* https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q217

There may be more.

I guess that they should be deleted. All the labels of items and properties
in this language should also be removed. It must be made impossible to add
new ones. The raionale is that the language code is not valid.

I proposed this here, but didn't get any replies yet:
https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Delete_a_wiki

Does everybody in the Langcom agree? If nobody objects, I'll make a
technical proposal in Phabricator in a week.
